It was on a rainy spring day that Chobi became a young woman's pet cat. Though he immediately fell in love with the beautiful and kind person who took him in, he can never hope to fully understand the complex world of humans. Over the course of their first year living in the same apartment, Chobi and his new owner live in their own separate worlds—standing alone yet close together. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

She and Her Cat is told from the perspective of Chobi; a cat that was recently adopted by She, an unnamed girl. Chobi is quite a philosophical little cat but his observations don't go past of what a regular cat might think. He notes how the girl cries, but does not wonder why, only that She is perfect and must not be at fault. He notes that She leaves during the day, but does not wonder where, only that the scent of the outside world comes through the door each time. He just knows that they are together, and that's all that there needs tobe. Being that there is no color in She and Her Cat adds to the OVA rather than ruins it. This could've happened because of the popular belief that cats see in black and white (they really see in color), but it really makes this 5 minute story stand out that much more. There are many freeze frames in the OVA, with the most animation coming from the background images, but this makes the story more involved and focused on and therefore it seems to fit the mood. As with the simple, but highly detailed animation comes the sound. Chobi's voice is constant in this OVA; he gives his side of his conversations and tells everything from a narrative point of view other times. There are a few other sounds such as sound effects, but the soft background songs in it are great and soothing. There are just three characters in this: Chobi, She, and Mimi, the cat that Chobi dates in the summer. The unamed girl She is shown as a lonely person who's only true friend in life is Chobi. While Mimi, on the other hand, is a cute kitten who wants to marry Chobi. Chobi disagrees; he thinks it is a false promise due to her just being a kitten and that he loves the more 'adult' woman instead. Overall, She and Her Cat was delightful. Very rarely can you tell a great story in just 5 minutes, but Makoto Shinkai pulled it off very well for being his first project. While maybe a little rushed, it was still a wholesome work of art. It's short, it's sweet (yet dark on some levels), and it has just a bit of innocence everyone needs once and awhile. And even if you think you won't like She and Her Cat, just try watching it once. 5 minutes is all you need.
This OVA, though barely five minutes long, has more emotional depth and impact than many longer anime. The animation is, simply put, incredible. Beautifully drawn black and white scenes that are contrasted against detailed backgrounds - this could even remind someone of an old live-action film (as improbable as that sounds, just watch it yourself). Everything looks incredibly realistic except for the cat, but it was purposefully drawn in a simplistic way to put emphasis on its persona and plight. There was very little music that I can remember but I liked the cat's calm, quiet, maybe even melancholy, voice. Although the main character is acat, he speaks like a wise scholar. The story...well, there's actually none, but that hardly matters since the fluid, interesting narration was the meat and bones of this OVA and more than made up for its lack of plot. She and Her Cat is about a cat's romantic love for its owner and how it sees life. Sounds a bit boring to you? You'll be surprised and impressed at how much thought Makoto Shinkai put into this. The cat's remarkable intelligence and subtle narration actually made me contemplate about my own life, and all the mistakes I made throughout it. For such a short piece, is nothing short of astounding. There are only two characters here: a cat and its owner. You'll learn an impressive amount of information about these two, even though this anime is so short. I was actually able to relate to, and feel sympathetic for, the cat's wistful love for his owner, and his heartbreaking desire to have a lover that was more like her. For everyone who has ever loved someone who was unattainable, this will definitely strike home. As for the cat's owner, you'll learn through the touching monologue why the cat loves her so. Overall, an excellent use of 5 minutes. You will not be disappointed in the slightest. If only a third of all anime series were as profound as this...

Story There doesn't seem to be a story beyond 'I am a cat. This is my opinion of the world.' That by itself makes for a philosophical short with an interesting take on life. Anyone who's owned a cat has wondered what goes on between those ears, and I believe that if cats could talk they'd agree with everything that this cat does. Art The art in this OVA is rather interesting - it's done in a black-and-white, simplistic, somewhat grainy manner. Despite the fact that the human is very realistically done and the cats are simplified and 'chibi', it still maintains an intriguingly real appearance. Sound Perhaps I ambiased, but I had a hard time with the sound. Although it is nicely done, the sound effects and music are much louder than the vocals and detract from the overall enjoyment. Character Although you never quite become bonded close enough to the human of the series to feel for her, you do bond very quickly with the cat and his quirky philosophy. Although the cat feels somewhat flat, anyone who has dealt with a cat will quickly recognize the "I'm so smart" face they try to put on. Overall this is a very enjoyable, and quick watch for someone looking to have a 'Five-Minute Philosophy Break', or who is just looking for a quirky anime.
She and Her Cat is the first film from director Makoto Shinkai (5 Centimeters Per Second, Garden of Words). At just under 5 minutes, there’s no plot to speak of, just the musings of Chobi the cat as the seasons pass and his bond with his owner grows. Chobi is a pretty deep cat, dwelling on topics such as love, existence, the limits of his perspective, and his unshakeable faith in the girl’s goodness. He reminded me of Henri the Existential Cat. Shinkai’s concept is clever, and for anyone who has ever owned a cat, it can be touching. As a cat lover, though, I expecteda more moving and realistic story. It’s cute to show how a cat can be completely infatuated with its owner, but Chobi’s affection is blind love rather than earned respect. Cats are deeper than Chobi. They’re aloof, calculating creatures that basically ran Egypt for centuries. If they love you, it’s because they have deemed you worthy, and it’s for their benefit, not yours. Chobi’s fascination with his owner is sweet, but it didn’t remind me of any cat I had ever met. The soundtrack is just a single piano theme that spans the entire film, but it’s beautiful, and Tenmon does a great job of showing off his talent. The animation is a unique and stunning monochrome that shows the world as it might appear from Chobi’s perspective. And Chobi, despite some naysayers, is adorable. Aside from the musical help from Tenmon, everything is made with love by Shinkai, who even voices Chobi (and does a great job). Unfortunately there’s no official dub and the dialogue moves quickly, making it hard to pay attention to the animation, but you can find a decent fandub here. She and Her Cat is a charming little film, and at 4 minutes you really have no excuse not to watch. It’s a great start to an illustrious career, and it’s refreshing to see Shinkai putting forth an original idea.
"She and Her Cat" is a short 5 min OVA featuring a cat talking about his owner. It was okay... but to be frank, I'd be pretty surprised if a 5 minute anime can be much better or much worse than simply "okay". The animation of this short clip seems to clash in places - the drawing style of the cat sticks out like a sore thumb in comparison to everything else. Also the relationship between the cat and the girl (as described by the cat to his "girlfriend") feels a little freaky to me. What does stand out for this anime is the melancholyatmosphere it manages to create in such a short space of time, but sadly, there's only so much you can do in 5 minutes. As a result I found "She and Her Cat" to be a cute little anime that is ultimately very forgettable. That's not to say it's a bad anime - I wouldn't diss it or anything, but I honestly find it impossible to get the same amount of enjoyment out of a 5 min OVA that I can from a season long series, just like I can't derive the same amount of pleasure from a poem than I can from novel. Call me uncultured if you want, but I'm just not really a poem kind of person, and "She and Her Cat" is definitely a poem type anime.
Story- A simple yet sweet storyline. At first, it would seem kind of dull but the way the main character describes the world around him makes it all better. It doesnt waste time on unimportant matters and it is, in the best way possible, calming. Art- Extremely well drawn characters. Each one of them was shown as they personality reflects. Black and white blended the mood and the scenery in am amazing way. Its as if everything was thought out meticulously. Sound- No extra bit of sound was added to any scene. As the screen moves, so does the sound echoing the action. Character- Extremely simple. The cat reflected its way ofbeing drawn. The girl was described in a way that seemed admirable. Enjoyment- I tend dislike most black and white shows but this one was better than a lot of great animes i have seen. Overall- Great show. It was a little on the short side but it was worth the search for it. Simple story, detailed art, geat sound, and realistic characters. This is something worth going out of your way to look and it doesnt take that long to finish.
"Their Standing Points." Kanojo to Kanojo no Neko. A short, cramped, minimalistic tale compacted in a 5min OVA. A lovely, unique, emotion-packed tale expressed at its best in a 5min OVA. Everything always has two points of view. Every point of view has a different interpretation. The everyday life of the Girl and her Cat. The everyday life of Chobi -the Cat- and its owner.Shinkai builds this short movie -this long poem- with the same elements old-school cinema were made. Before all the advances in CGI and other technologies, when few scenes and no dialogue were needed in order to make children happy and adults believe in fantasy again. First the introduction scene, the introduction of the characters, then followed by a monologue of one character conducing the narrative as the scenes keep changing. With a calm and relaxed pace, a whole story is told within 4:57 minutes. The artwork reminds some nostalgic home-made productions from the times of the first portable cameras that were still black/white, however, you can notice it's perfectly drawn and detailed, as expected from Shinkai. This plus an endearing background music by Tenmon only confirms that the focus is the story itself, without other interferences nor distractions. Great books doesn't need tons of volumes to be good. It's often said that sequences ruin the movies. The same way, Shinkai doesn't need more than five minutes to tell a story. In a review, I'm supposed to present the series, do a little analysis but not spoil anything. When we're talking about an OVA like this one, I must be honest and say that I won't be filling lines that goes nowhere and will simply state: Watch it. It is worth it. No, I'm not being vague. If you watch it and don't get it, watch it again. If you do it and still don't get it, you're probably too young for Shinkai's movies. Kanojo to Kanojo no Neko is a piece of philosophy after all. Packed with antagonism and metaphors just like this review.
Originally published on Anime Viking: http://animeviking.wordpress.com/ ---------- Told entirely from a cat’s perspective, She and Her Cat remains one of Shinkai’s more interesting ideas to this date. But similar to Tooi Sekai, She and Her Cat is more of an experiment than a proper story. It is more about how it is told than exactly what is told. Despite dropping a few subtle, yet too vague for speculation, clues at something larger than what we witness, it is clear that this is not important to She and Her Cat. The way it is conveyed, on the other hand, is smart. As I mentioned, everything is from a cat’s perspective, which lends itself well to creating sort of a melancholic atmosphere. This, along with the equally melancholic music and visuals, helps draw you in for a neat, if not too special, little ride.
To begin with, I have to say that I found this on a recommendation. I am by no means a cat person, or an animal person at that, but since it was so short, I decided to give it a try. Honestly, this is less of a typical anime but more of a quiet retrospective work to watch a few minutes before bedtime or what you're feeling down and worthless. Trust me, especially if you have a pet, this will cheer you up. Since it's only a few minutes long, I won't go too in depth about the content so I won't spoil it, butit's simply a cat's thoughts about his owner. There's something simple and beautiful about it. I've seen some people complain about the art, but in all honesty, I found the black and white simplicity to be quite pretty, along with the almost stop-motiony animation. Since I watched a fandub after not being able to find a sub or an official dub, the sound really wasn't my favorite part of it all, but I am willing to give it the benefit of the doubt since it wasn't the original work. I managed to look at non-english subs and I found the original Japanese to be quite soothing to listen to, almost like ASMR. The characters are a little ambiguous, and I liked that about it. It could almost be about anyone, anywhere. It was simple and beautiful. Overall, though I did enjoy it, as person who isn't really a pet person, I didn't get all feelzy like many others did over it. It was just simply a thought process for me. I would recommend this if: you own a pet, you like cats, you own a cat, you like short (really short) anime, you get feelz over fluffballs, you are feeling down and need something to make you feel better I would NOT recommend this if: you are looking for something super philosophical or deep, you're not a pet/animal person, you hate cats Have a great day everyone!
my rating: 4/10 The OVA was okay. If you're not into poetry, this isn't worth your time. The story is told from a cat's perspective, who spends most of the film talking about his day-to-day activities. His words have a poetic tone filled with imagery. Some people might like that, but if you (like me) are not into poetry, I doubt you will enjoy this OVA. Some have described this show as "philosophical", which is true to an extent. But don't expect anything deep; it's just a cat pondering life for a few minutes as he watches his owner. Some other reviews have said that there's a"twist" midway, but it's not much more than a shift in tone. As for the visuals, it's all in greyscale, and most of the shots are just random bits of scenery. Most of the OVA is spent panning over those drawings, with not much animation actually happening. They scenery is really well-drawn and quite detailed. The human also drawn fairly well, but nothing special. They style she's drawn in looks typical of the early 2000s. But the one thing that threw me off was how they drew the cat. He looks very cartoonish, unlike everything else in the film. I actually laughed when I saw him. It's funny how derpy he looks compared to the serious tone of the visuals and narration. And I don't think humour was the intention. Overall, I can't say that the film was particularly bad or anything, and I only rate it slightly below average because I don't find poetry very entertaining. But I also don't see any strong reason to recommend this to anyone. If you're into poetry, I'm sure there's better stuff out there. If you're into art house and/or philosophy, don't expect much depth from an OVA that's not even 5 minutes long. And if you're not into any of that, this will just feel boring. The only good use of this OVA I can think of is to show what "art house" or "kino" is like (to someone who doesnt know), without wasting too much of their time.
Now this obviously isnt your typical anime, the story of a cat living with is owner is something im sure most companies wouldnt want to put there money behind. but this anime was actually very well executed. the story is told by chobi, a cat living with a single woman. chobi tells the story in a very simple yet intelligent way. this was what really attracted me. the idea of showing the world from a cats view was astonishingly well done. At first the story seems quite mediocre, but after about 1 min the story kicks in. keep in my that this is nothing on anepic scale. see it more as a modest love story between pet and master. as it unfolds there are twists in the story, which given its small time frame were done very well. and as the story reaches its end you come to appreciate for more and more The animation was also brilliant, being done in black and white made me feel as though i was watching a manga unfold, with its own sense of unique realism. chobi the cat looks like he has been drawn by a five year, (or me) lol. but he stands out from all the other pieces of art, which if that was the goal work perfectly. its short, precise, and well done. She and her cat wont dissappoint
“Other Worlds” and “She and her cat” are Makoto Shinkai’s first works and his starting points in the anime industry. In particular “Kanojo to Kanojo no Neko” (“She and her cat”) raise his popularity and made him reach first place in 12th DoGA CG-animation contest. This five minutes animation feature the relationship between a cat, Chobi and his owner, “She”. The story, told from the cat's perspective, cover a year of his life, from the moment of their encounter to the next spring. The beautiful writing of the short story let you enjoy every second of the five minutes. From the words of the cat you can understandhis feelings and immerse yourself in his story. In five minutes is almost impossible to define strong characters, but in this case we have “She”, Chobi’s owner, that through the cat’s word gets described and it’s not easy to forget, even if her name is a mystery. In general Chobi and “She” aren’t anonymous character you actually come to care about them. Mimi (Chobi’s cat girlfriend) is only a side character that helps with the flow of the story and its emotional impact. Just on a side note I think that Shinkai’s weakness are the characters and I find funny that the characters in “She and her cat” are better that the ones in some of his other movies. The animations and CGs are beautiful in their simplicity, also the choice of using black and white helps to create the right mood for the story. The music is nice; this soundtrack is Tenmon’s first piece for an anime. In the end I will recommend the vision of this OVA to everyone, if you haven’t seen it go and watch it immediately it’s only five minutes and you will never regret seeing it. And only one final word: "This world, I think we like it."
I’m not gonna lie. I did not expect that. This short is really something else. It’s well done visually (maybe except the cat, it bugs me that he’s so surreal) I really loved the mood and the lack of colour is perfect for this type of story in my opinion. It acts like that je ne sais quoi that everyone is looking for while creating something. For an animation that relies heavily on the narrator and still images, rather than more traditional animated characters, there is a really gut punching scene in there. Everything is shown in a very calm, very familiar way. The human in the story canbe anyone. You, Your friend, Your lover, someone You know, someone You care for and I think that’s it’s strength. You can associate with her. The whole story is told from the perspective of a cat that was found and adopted by a young woman. There isn’t any grand plot of saving the world or anything like that. Just a calm, everyday cosiness with just a little pinch of drama. I really didn’t expect to like it as much as I did. I think every fan of animation should watch this ASAP.
Kanojo to Kanojo no Neko is a very sweet story about how a cat views the world. It can definitely hit home for people who own cats themselves. Story: 5/10 It's simple and cute. The cat, Chobi, just describes what is going on around him, about how perfect his owner 'She' is, and just his general opinion of the world. It is done in a narrative manner. Though it works really well with the message it is trying to portray. Art: 7/10 The art style is very unique. It is purely black and white and dull; it is very simplistic but also extremely detailed at the same time. Itfits perfectly with the story and it would be ruined if there was more colours. Sort of feels like you're seeing the world through the cat's eyes, as they are unable to see bright colour. Sound: 5/10 There was a lovely piano melody playing in the background throughout, which was really atmospheric and brought the whole piece together. The sound effects were also very well detailed, very high quality!! Character: 6/10 The only notable characters are Chobi, his girlfriend and She. There is not a lot of development about all of the characters, not a lot is really said. Though this is a nice choice as a cat does not care for how people are, which is why he only sees the best in She, proclaiming that nothing is ever her fault. Enjoyment: 5/10 It was a nice little 5 minute OVA, definitely worth checking out if you have the time!! Overall: 5/10 Wasn't something I'd watch again, but it was very pretty and well made.
Small, black-and-white, absolutely static, almost deprived of a plot, almost not having characters, but the deep, shrill, innovative, arthouse film. Simple graphics, correct words. Beautiful animated cartoon. The idea quite good, but I waited all the time for something. Any turn of a plot, unpredictability. The subject of loneliness is expressed here rather deeply. I would tell that this work for certain subcultural groups. For those someone is admired by similar tragic shots, sad words which flow the slow river. Everything is too predictable alone - beautiful expressions, smooth foreshortenings and surely a rain. But warmth blows from this film at the same time. Thiscat is the unique pleasure of the girl, her friend, happiness lump. The cat loves the hostess, it is enamoured exactly really of it . He meets her every evening and sees off for work every morning. And she... She hurries to he. The cat managed to make what many people can't - he shared with she this silence of the stiffened existence, divided with she loneliness cargo, thereby having given she a support, desire to come back home. The girl feels that there is such soul which considers the moments to a long-awaited meeting with shi. It is here - loneliness for two. Together alone :) The film is actual. It reminds us of eternal, monotonous, pressing loneliness. But everyone will understand it in own way. And it is fine! Remember, after all even when it seems that life is a continuous dullness, is the one to someone you are necessary!
I saw a post on Tumblr about this OVA and I thought the concept was really cute! So I watched it. It's short and sweet (only 5 minutes long) so you could give it a try and not really be wasting time. It's about a cat and it's owner. Although I highly doubt my cat has this much love for me, I thought it was very touching. I can't really complain too much, since it was short OVA, but the art left a little to be desired, as did the sound. Either way, try it. It's short and about a cat. What harm could it do?
"Kanojo to Kanojo no Neko" or "She and Her Cat: Their Standing Points" is one of good philosophical anime. It tells story about a cat and the owner life but from the cat points of view. In just 5 minutes it presented 5 phase of what happened in daily life of the owner and the cat. The cat (Chobi) dominate this anime by his mind telling and analyzing situations of what happened recently to his owner. Being voiced by Makoto Shinkai itself Chobi really stands out for 5 minutes long of this OVA, the voice's kind of plain but it's what makes you keep wonderingwith question and idea in your mind. In short, this anime is really an intriguing and philosophical. Romance is one of main topic of this anime, since it's just between the girl owner and the cat, they develop the relationship of owner-and-pet since they met. But like the title said, everything is being told by the Chobi points of view. A feel of realistic and emotional is being presented too since the cat minds is like very honest. The cat grew likes her and very fond of her at the state of telling she's the most beautiful girl and doesn't at fault at everything she did. That's what every pet'd think if the owner is good too. There's really nothing much to complain since the anime being presented by how it's must to be, it's psychological, drama, yet romance. The art seems pretty good by only looks with black-and-white character and background, the flow of the line for the art really intriguing. The sound, well nothing to comment since it's only Makoto's Voice, but i noticed a girl voice in the middle of story. It's the a little problem for me because if it's just Makoto's voice i'd be fine, but if there's another voice there should be a dialogue at least.. for explaining what happened. That's how it makes this anime being a little dull since it's just like reading manuscript by how it's presented. That's aside leave an interesting story and make the viewer to conclude it up to their idea. I do recommend this to everyone, especially who has a pet since it's only 5 minutes, it's better to watch it rather than daydreaming.

Another 'Shinkai awarding Shinkai's own nonstory book an anime adaptation' not because it deserves it but because nepotism of him being in charge of the animation studio. Only ~30 min total yet it still manages to be a waste of time. The cat itself looks cartoonishly out of place and barely does anything while being boringly portrayed as basically just a human mind in a cat's body. Plenty of the author larping as a cat to self-narrate everything by essentially reading out the audiobook as mostly nothing happens. What little does happen is just the most generic series of events almost any cat owner goes through overplayed through dumbmelodrama between noncharacters. The art/animation is boringly uninspired generic nonvisuals overdone with a high budget far more than this nonstory deserves. At least Shinkai managed to hold himself back to only 1 or so foot fetish shots by opening with a nudity tease centered solely on the bare legs and feet of 2 women for a prolonged amount of time. 1/10 (where 5/10 is average)
The anime is very wholesome, and the idea behind it is great. The cat even has a girlfriend, Mimi, and other charming details that add to its appeal. However, there's something that bothers me and kept me from giving it a higher rating. It doesn't seem realistic for a cat to think this much. Obviously, we can't know for sure, but it just doesn't sit right. Despite this, the concept and the philosophical thoughts attributed to the cat are well done. It's a small detail, but it’s hard to overlook. That said, considering it's a very short OVA, it’s worth watching if you come across it.(;^ω^) Especially ifyou're a cat lover!
