It started as a sociological experiment. Six different people were brainwashed to think that they were a family and then put in arbitrary situations to see how they would react; however, when a taping of the families conducts is sold in a desperate attempt to make a little capital, it instantly becomes a success. Now the family is a first rated show and their every move is broadcasted around the world without them knowing it. But when a clogged toilet sets off a chain of events that ultimately frees the family from the room they are confined in the broadcasters, not willing to lose their source of income, set out to hunt down and recapture every member of the Eternal family. The overall design and animation was superb (just what you would expect from the director of Magnetic Rose and Beyond - 2 of my favorite short animated films). The 'story' was meant to unfold in an abstract fashion, but it was so disjointed and incoherent that it became annoying at times. It's definitely worth watching if you're into surreal images and experimental animation - but don't go in expecting much in the way of character development or plot (although it does make sense in its own unconventional way).
I didn't know what to expect going into this but I found it oddly enjoyable. It's like "The Truman Show" but also has a hint of "The Matrix" which is really interesting as this predates both. The characters were crazy but oddly enjoyable and it has a buch of really random scenes in it. The artwork was really surreal and while definitely not for everybody I'd say it's worth checking out if you're remotely interested as it's only 28 minutes. Also a little off topic but the final boss theme "Grace and Glory" in "Jet Set Radio" samples the ending song in this, I wasn't expecting that,it was really cool.
As someone who just watched this at 2am in 2020 my immediate reaction was. "Reminds me of early Imaishi works (Dead Leaves comes to mind) but with the same lonely feelings of a world of alienation as Kaiba" probably one of the strangest comparisons I know. I didn't get much from any of the characters other then the father. But the art, music and even premise were able to hold it up for me. My conflicting feeling is this though. If they lengthened it to about an hour (like Dead Leaves lol) i think the characters would have been done a favor and would have hadtime to be expressed more and not feel so bizarrely empty. I'd hesitate to call them Cliche but at the same time I could really only tell you one thing about each other then the Father. But at the same time in that short 30 minutes the plot/premise carried me all the way through and I really liked that. All in all I think that 5. whatever score is a bit undeserving. Give it a try it's only 27 minutes
this little chunk of stuff was so full of masterful storytelling on multiple levels. really interesting music/sound design, the animation was simple and well done, the characters were great (so great that its sad there isnt more of them than this 30 minute short) to be able to build up a world with that many characters and also tell a story where somewhat drastic changes happen, and to push all of it into 30 minutes, i just think that takes a lot of talent. also its funny. they play with the pacing a lot. the toilet flushing every few minutes in the beginning was a delightfor me 🤣🤣 very stimmy. it starts quickly and rolls over itself quickly but if you stick with it itll reward you with more flow later. the animation reminded me of... Tekkonkinkreet in some ways, or No. 5 (manga), or... yknow, its that kind of irreverent avant garde-y skratchy style. if you like that, you'll love this.
