In the molecular biology department of a major university, Komada and Koshigaya do more than just teach. They are also investigating demon viruses, which cause people to morph into grotesque creatures with a craving for human flesh. While conducting their research, the pair encounter Sayaka Murakami, the granddaughter of a famous fortune teller. Feeling compelled to help her find her missing grandfather, Komada and Koshigaya learn that a group of thugs is pursuing Sayaka. To make matters more sinister, these perpetrators seem to have a connection to the demon viruses. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

I'm surprised no one has written a review for this yet, as I found it quite a pleasant surprise. Japan has given us some very interesting stories about zombies and demons in the past (the most famous probably being Resident Evil) and this movie is no exception. Biohunter uses the age old plot device of a virus which leaves the infected with some rather nasty side effects. The show begins by illustrating a woman and her lover, both devoured by the disease. In the case of the young woman, she loses her sanity (and her good looks) while her lover is quite literally lunch. Itis a fairly horrific scene, one that really sets the tone for the finale. A lot of movies involving zombies and/or demons choose to depict the former as humans without any sense of self control but don't explore the concept any farther than cannibalism. Biohunter definitely has its fair share of cannibalism, but takes it even further. The opening scene shows a couple making love only to have the moment disrupted by the 'hunger' of the infected, which sets the tone for the entire movie. The lead character, who has an advanced immune system allowing him to maintain a degree of control over the demonic virus, is a complete gentleman, becoming the opposite when the virus takes over. What appears to be the main theme of the movie - the lead characters seeking out a psychic at his granddaughter's request - is more of a suplot, with the main character's battle against the disease taking centre stage. This man does not trust himself to engage in relationships with the opposite sex, lest his demonic side raise its head and hurt them. The main villain of the movie is a man who has let his demonic side run amok and control him. He is shown as a complete lecher, devouring young women despite his gentlemanly exterior. This theme of predatory human beings who destroy the opposite sex when they reveal their true self is true of the difficulties facing real relationships - how many people in the real world worry that showing their partner who they really are will change their perception? Furthermore, how many people worry that their partner is just using them? Art-wise, this show is very old, though a lot of detail is given to indivuidual faces and features. Unlike many shows, whose character designs do not vary much beyond 'ugly or attractive', the characters of Biohunter actually have individual ones. The main weakness of this show is the same as its strength: character development. There are at least four possible main characters of this show and none of them get any particularly decent character development. The movie is open ended and does not give you any kind of conclusion - many of the questions raised within the film remain unanswered without any kind of resolution. You never find out the origin of the Demon virus, whether it is preventable, how it is transmitted etc. I found this really disappointing and felt the movie deserved another hour to explore these concepts. 7/10
Right from the beginning, it's nothing I would be amazed of, although I don't think it deserves a score this small. In order to find some hidden gem, I came across this piece. Unfortunately, it wasn't a gem as I originally thought. It was more of a conglomeration of fast pacing and a leaky script. Maybe to mention that it was made by Madhouse, so it wasn't that bad, because Madhouse is generally known for spawning a masterpiece next to a masterpiece. But there is no space to relativize it here. No wonder. This show was less than an hour long so they couldn't crama coherent plot into such a short time slot. The main characters are two scientists who we don't really know anything about. We don't know how they got the job they do and what the show is all about. We don't know their backgrounds, so we miss a lot of context. The only thing we know is that one of them caught the demon virus, which is the main theme of the whole show. For some selfless reason, he manages to keep him at bay and suppress it to an extent. A girl who is irrelevant to the plot gets in our way, and if she dies, no one will notice, even through that she looks like a main character. She is hounded by mafia for some reason, maybe because her grandfather knows the truth about their godfather and they want to get rid of them. And the godfather will eventually be the main boss - in both senses. In essence, there are 2 parallel paths that are not connected to each other in any way, but the screenwriters set it up so that our main and infected hero gets involved in a rift with the mafia, in order to end up fighting. I didn't even mention that the side jobs of the two characters, normally university teachers, was getting rid of infected people. And yet no one has given us any indication of the origin of the virus. That to find a cure method was possible because one of them was infected and wanted to get rid of the burden. If it was any longer, it would definitely be a very interesting show. Like this, it's just a segment that starts from somewhere in the middle. Sure, the animation was nice for the time. The theme and processing would suit the quality of Madhouse, so a huge plus and extra points. I wouldn't judge it as trash, but it won't win everyone's heart. Anyway, give it a shot.
Rate a 5 Seen via English dubbed Story/art Not original. Similar to a couple older shows like ghost busters for example. Even though the question one would have are answered it fails to make the viewer captive. perhaps, it is due to the unrealistic approach the art has. Don't get me wrong the art is done nicely just not nerve raking. If you have seen any of the Saw movies you know what i mean. Those movies use very realistic effects and i get can't help but getting scared. Here i felt the need to yawn. Sound No complaints nor compliments. Character background was covered but i would of have like toknown the main characters before they ran this night business of theirs. Enjoyment Scifi horror is basically what this is. If you were a fan of angel the t.v. show you might like this.
Another ancient japan animation that brought back a mixed feeling. A sex in the first 2 mins was insane. The ecchi elements on this show surprisingly very enjoyable, for me. However, the gore element that added after the whole temptation scenes created an instant dissapointment. I mean, the fuck was that? Now i should really called this show as messed up by mixing up my hatred and joy into one scenes all at once. Should i really called this as a joke? Nope. This show had a serious tone, even from its beginning. I noticed with a serious tone, they tried to portray was so underwhelming.Despite the fact that the introduction parts had a lack detail, about who, why, when, and where it all started. As well as its ending. I can't find any interest, even after they closed the curtain shows. Furthermore, the characteristic itself felt lacking too. Its like this 1 hour show was not enough to portray their characterization as much as possible. I feel like they just forced our two MC into a likeable person, that somehow bring me another awkward reaction. Since the beginning felt lacking, the end still lack its potential. If only, they could attach more story in front of this, and after those events, it sounds more better than this show. I hope you all understanding my nonsense phrase here lol. So, to keep it simple, i may give my judgement at a number to reduced any unnecessary explanations. Story : 6 The introduction about the whole DNA and virus as a reason felt okay. Its a fine theme to exploit the storyline. However, i noticed there was still undeniable nonsensical about what was goin on at the guy that could turned out to be monster and gain access to controlled it. Yeah, that shit gave my satisfaction decreased so fast. Because no explanations among it just resulting a nonsense at any certain level. Its impact their end development characterization that may a bit explain at the bottom level of these section. However, once i realize that this was just an ancient show, i think its still in an understandable level to pressure any unnecessary blamed. So, to keep my judgement simple, the storyline was okay. But still lack of explanations at any certain point, that i don't need to pointed out one by one. Clear? Thats it for me. 6 shall be enough to give a fair amount of respect to these kind of show. Art, animation, sounds, and any related technical issued, i gave them all at 6. Once again, its just based fully on my personal judgement that somehow biased from every people reaction. My first impression, and my experience over my old anime listed here. I said that these kind of show was really suit at the basic fine level for me. Characterization: 5 This is hard. If only they could explore more information about their duo MC. This show deserved more scores for me. And their character just not ended up being a dull characterization at the end of the show. However, since their story still lacking a certain amount of explanations, and their characterization just felt so forced, even until its final blow. I can't denied myself that their characterization just felt like unfinished. I give a 6 to simply respect the end credits of him that never be back to his humanity. Enjoyment : 8 Thanks to their ecchiness: an insane sex scenes at their first 2 mins; a good amount of gore and attached them at a nice placement; an enjoyable action scenes; and many section that i can't explain its detail (different from the others section that i already explain above). I simply give my enjoyment at 8 with their effort to make me enjoyed their wrecked train at this 1 hour show. Overall? I used my usual mean rate to closed everything that had done. So, a bio hunter, that may focus about hunting a bio aspect of their hunts, they just ended up with a romance nuance that never cleared its intentions at the end. Even they couldn't bring a clear conclusion about their hunt, making the show at a cliffhanger status that bring a storyline on the verge of the ambiguity. At the mean rate, i give this show at 6,25/10 as a total scores.
--- The review contains spoilers--- Bio Hunter is a Madhouse film from the mid 90s based off of a manga by Fujihiko Hosono. Madhouse has a bit of a mixed history with horror themed anime in general. They worked on Blade, which was okay. Death Parade, which was fantastic and Highschool of the Dead, which remains among the worst anime I've ever seen. So, this anime could end up anywhere on the spectrum. Story: We open with a couple having sex. She seems disinterested and just wants something to eat. Guys, if your partner responds like that, I'm sorry but you need to work on your technique. Maybe communicatea little and find out what they would like you to do. But this nameless dude is an asshole so he doesn't even think of that. Then her body breaks out into little faces and one of them rips his hand off. We cut to a Professor doing a lecture while one of his students writes flirty messages to him. He and one of his colleagues are called by a bunch of shady looking people and they find the girl from before chained up and covered in little faces. Which renders the opening sex scene entirely pointless. Because everything important about it is reiterated in this scene. It turns out the Professors are involved in fighting against the so-called "Demon's Virus" by using medicines and the infection suffered by one of them. Here's my first question, if they have medicines that can treat this then why does one of our protagonists have it? They never cover that in the film. They don't even give us a throwaway line about how "his is too advanced" or something. We can have an entirely pointless sex scene but we can't cover an important plot detail like that? Are you fucking kidding me? But the narrative issues don't end there. We have plenty of other things that just aren't cohesive. For example, we spot a group of thugs trying to capture a young girl so they can find out where her grandfather is and, not five minutes later, they run her car off the road in an attempt at killing her. So, if they need her for information why would they do that? And if they don't, then why bother her in the first place when all it does is draw attention to themselves? Did no one proof read this? Then we have the effort at connecting science with fortune telling. Now, there's a reason most writers use either magical elements or real science but not both because it's difficult to justify magic using science and most people can't pull it off. Bio Hunter is a primary example. Particularly when they meet the fortune teller and try to justify his craft as him "reading genomes" which is exceptionally stupid. Oh, and our infected scientist has the lamest possible way of detecting other infected. He tears up. You think he gets false positives if his mind wanders and he thinks about something sad? You think the Beast Wars episode Code Of Hero has just popped into his head and left him wondering whether he was tearing up because of that or because of the virus being present in someone else nearby? Characters: The characters in this are a bit shite just in general. Koshigaya is just kind of a twat. Komada is one of those super angsty characters who we never really see in another mode so it has no impact when he actually has some reason to be upset. He's not as bad as Shinji in that regard. He's a bit more subdued about it, but it's still terrible writing. The antagonist is just evil. Then we have Sayaka. I want to talk about her a bit because she is indefensibly vapid. This is a character who finds herself in a car that's going over a cliff, wakes up and never really questions why she and the other people are completely unharmed. Or why one of the guys doesn't have a shirt any more. Does she just assume that he was exposed to gamma radiation and transformed? Except instead of the Incredible Hulk he's the Incredible Disappointment. His parents were right the whole time. In all seriousness, this isn't something anyone, even a complete moron, would just accept. You were quite literally tossed off of a cliff in a car that's now a fiery wreck. This is something we need a lengthy scene addressing. You can scrap that pointless sex scene for it. Art: The film doesn't look good, frankly. A lot of the animation is just lazy, especially when it comes to conversational scenes. They can't even be bothered to put any real effort into syncing the lip movements, when they actually have them, to the dialogue. The action sequences aren't anything great either. They're just generally boring. 3x3 Eyes looks much more impressive and it started airing four years before this. And strong artwork is usually something that Madhouse works have, even when they're kind of shit, except for the aforementioned Highschool of the Dead which is overly focused on trying to arouse teenage boys and for this which isn't that bad but is very low effort. Sound: About the best thing I can say for the film is that they got some capable actors. I know that Seki Toshihiko can be good. I know that Inoue Kazuhiko can be good. I know that Minaguchi Yuko can be good. I've heard them all deliver strong performances. They don't in this. In this they just sound like they don't give a shit. Which I can't really blame them for. I don't think the greatest actors in the world could take this script and sound invested. Amano Masamichi's soundtrack isn't bad. It's just kind of mediocre. Which still makes it the strongest element of the film, sadly. Ho-yay: There isn't any. Which is fine because what little romance they try to develop is pretty awful. Final Thoughts: Bio Hunter is a really bad film The script is a mess. The characters are annoying. Even the artwork, animation and acting are weak. And it's not even executed in such a way that it's at least entertaining to watch just to poke fun at. Ultimately, I give it a 2/10 and I'm tempted to go lower but I don't think it's that horrible. I still can't recommend it to anyone.
I like that our hero has to literally fight his inner demon for control of his body, or else bad things are going to happen to good people. There's also a decent amount of tentacles, killing, monsters, nudity and action, but also a lot of yabbering about...I actually can't say what they were going on about as I seem to have tuned a lot of it out. I'm sure it was deep and thought provoking, but apparently I'm not that deep or thoughtful of a person...or they were repeating the same thing over and over. Yeah that's it. So action was good, talking bad. Cool lookingmonsters.
Bio Hunter Right from the get-go I am enthralled into this anime. A couple is making love (no one is in the room with me) I'm thinking, "Alright, let's see where this is going." BOOM somebody dies. Now you've got my attention. The story line actually isn't very thought out, but the two main characters are detectives and stumble into a life-or-death case involving them now. At first they wanted to help this poor lady in distress, but then they become emotionally attached and can't just leave her alone. Background: A demon virus is on the loose and infecting people. These Infected devour other people in orderto survive, and look just like humans. It is only when the demon becomes hungry that the demon morphs the human body into a machine of slaughter. It also doesn't help that the victims are normally well-drawn out beautiful women. One thing to take note here is that although the main antagonists always just HAPPEN to appear and create chaos, there is a logical path to the story line and always a sense of tension ( what's going to happen next ). Story - 6 - Taken in it's purest form, the story line is equivalent of a great porno (18+). Art - 10 - Beautiful-drawn retro art style. Massive work put into this. Sound - 8 - Great sense of tension in the sound track. The music also matches the same era as the graphics. Characters - 5 - Not too much back story here, but enough to understand character's emotions. Overall - 8 - This score is given because the story is incredibly tense and satisfying. I even skipped breakfast just to finish this show. That's serious. Recommended - Great 58min skit. Totally worth the movie night, and because the men are shown shirtless at times, it would be a very provocative couple's movie.
Bio Hunter is a really fascinating tale of two biomolecular professors that try to unravel a mysterious retrovirus that is spreading through Japan. This virus has the ability to change its hosts into bloodthirsty monsters with increased strength and speed. One of the professors has been infected but his impeccable immune system has allowed him to remain in his human form and transform into his monster form. However, the professors are working against the clock as the virus spreads and the professor struggles with his monster side Story - The story is a really unique fusion of supernatural lore and science. It is really enjoyable tosee a plot give some molecular reasoning to viruses and to "predict someone's destiny" via their human genome. The concept has been done many times before and this story is really no different, however, it is enjoyable because of how the anime was produced with the high-quality sound design and characters. Sound/Music - the music was somewhat lacking or dated but that is due to the time the anime was created and not because of a lack of skill. However, a lot of the sound effects were really well edited and they were always used to enhance a scene. The gun noises and the creepy/eerie sound effects were the most notably well executed. The voice acting was also very well done, with all of the characters having fitting voices and conveying real emotions. Art- The anime was produced in the mid-90s so it definitely displayed the retro anime aesthetic that is really interesting and different. The 90s were known for producing anime with characters that were diverse in appearance. The characters had a lot of defining features. The landscapes in the anime were decently drawn. Overall - As someone who very much enjoys older anime and the seinen/gore genre, Bio Hunter was really satisfying. Madhouse is a solid production company, creating many other awesome action anime that i highly recommend (Trigun, Black Lagoon, Hellsing Ultimate, and DeathNote to name a few). They definitely know what they are doing and don't usually produce shit shows. The concept and style of the show are refreshing from the slew of new animes that design their characters to look the same.
Ok, to be honest I just was expecting a cheap-gore OVA like Genocyber. But I was given a very good story with a few gore scenes. Story: Not the most original story in the world (also I think it was inspired on Devilman only with a biological focus) but it was pretty good. The existence of demons explained from a scientist point of view. Hey, thats something that we dont get everyday. But thats just a combination of the ideas of mythological and biological monsters in one sotry. It doesnt make it original but still a good idea Characters: Too simple but it doesnt make thembad characters. Sometimes they look very unexpressive but thats because they show no fear about the monsters. And thats make sense. Why you should be scared about something that you are researching? About the developement of the characters, its not very good but I cant complain about it. We are talking about a story of 59 minutes, not 822 episodes, just as an example. Soundtrack: no comments. Just awful Technical work: Very good. Nothing to be surprised. We are talking about Madhouse studios. Recommended? 50/50. Just decent.
This kind of movie you watch when you don't really know what do you want to watch. You have a lot of different titles that you think are good and you are about to watch them, but can't really make yourself to. When you feel that way, you should watch something like this. Bio Hunter is exactly what you would expect from a movie with this score, rating, themes and synopsis. The story is not unique and neither are the characters, on technical level its fine for the time it was made in, it doesn't have some complex philosophical or psychological topics in it. It's justyour typical "B movie", but in the world of japanese animation and this is the best thing about it. No order that you have to follow to get the "right" experience, no different seasons or alternative adaptations, no time commitment to understand the complexity of characters or the world they are in and no discussions searching to understand what this whole thing is about. One hour and you either get what you expected or find a hidden gem. Don't get me wrong though, this movie doesn't stand out even for its time, nevertheless sometimes it takes something bland to make you appreciate something good.
