Two advanced civilizations, the Paranoids (a race of alien humanoids) and the Solenoids (who are all women) are waging a war that has gone on for centuries. When the Solenoid fleet leaves a battle to defend an experimentally terraformed world from the Paranoids, one damaged Solenoid ship, the Star Leaf, is separated from the fleet.
Only seven women remain alive on the ship: Eluza, the captain, Rabby, the solid more or less main character, Lufy, the brash pilot, Catty, the mysterious science officer, Pony, the pink-haired ditzy tech, Patty, a solid crew member, and Remy, the cute one.
After narrowly escaping the battle, the crew of the Star Leaf decides to continue with their orders and rendezvous at planet Chaos to defend it. It turns out, however, that their ship is the subject of a Paranoid experiment. In the end, it is up to the remaining crew Star Leaf to defend the artificial paradise of Chaos from the Paranoid fleet and the plans of the Solenoid leaders.

~Mr. Panda's VCR of Doom: #2~ Gall Force (likely a language perversion of "Girl Force"), details the ending stage of a great war between two races. Without going as far as spoiling certain parts of the work, Gall Force seems to be a conceptual ancestor to the 21st century work Vandread--essentially pitting an all female race of beings against a (presumably) all male species of aliens. The story has one of the more interesting Sci-Fi twists I've seen out of the 80s. To a certain degree, you can see it coming (if you've got a good Sci-Fi imagination that is). However, it adds aninteresting dynamic regardless. The main focus of the story involves a team from the female race carrying out provisions of a secret project. Really straightforward and--let's face it--dull to most people familiar with the genre. Gall Force's strength is in its presentation. The space battles are rather well done, and the artwork on environment and characters is on par with just about any anime out of the period. And again, the plot twists near the end give it extra points in my book.
It does contain a few plot holes. However, ever since Terminator came out, plot holes in Sci-Fi are acceptable. So if you're tempted to ask how an all-female species reproduces, or why if certain forces are in cahoots they don't try to stop killing eachother... Just use your imagination or ignore it.
The music (a department I generally expect little of) was surprisingly good. Music matched the scene quite well in almost all instances. This makes certain sections of the movie that might otherwise be boring easier to sit through. I wish to note specially portions where character development is lacking. This is the largest failure of Gall Force. I found it impossible to have any sympathy with anyone but the main character (well, until the later movies at least). This would often be a very large turn-off for me, but in addition to being slightly more forgiving of Sci-Fi in this matter, the other aspects make-up for it.
The first Gall Force feature really serves best as the gateway to the other parts of the Gall Force metaseries. As a stand-alone though it makes for a decent selection for Sci-Fi movie night. The first movie really is a love it or hate it kind of deal. Non-SciFi fans will probably find it hard to get into. If you do like it, pursuing the rest of the Gall Force metaseries is highly recommended on my part. Availability of Gall Force is questionable, but a brief internet search should provide you with what you need if you are not the flea market type that picks-up VHS copies of anime.

For a start I have to paraphrase “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover”. I judged it that way all these years so I ended always postponing my visualization of Gall Force. I have to say that I regret not having watched it earlier. -------Little Spoilers on the beginning of the story bellow---------- In the middle of a space war, our all female team on their spaceship unite themselves to run away from what looked like a lost war, by doing that, they gained some unexpected members on their crew, females of course. But they were unable to escape safely, they were pursued by their enemies, analien race, in their attempt and that led to some confronts later on.

Well, the premise wasn’t anything extraordinary, in fact the premise and the cover image made my interest decrease, “an all girl force fighting in some galaxy…”, in fact it was quite lame and it got me away of Gall Force all these years, but fortunately this was one of those cases when “there’s more than meets the eye”.
The characters weren’t nothing extraordinary too as I had expected, except the lead one, which we assume it is the lead, that was pretty dependable and actually developed into a great character.
The story and the plot twists that it led were the strong points of the film, perhaps some twists weren’t well explained and detailed and there were a lot of background story to be told, but the fact how the story ran away from it’s initial course and done in an interesting way leading us to a completely unexpected and pretty cool ending makes for all the flaws of the anime.
Ah, I’m a sucker to those types of endings, I loved it.
The animation was pretty nice and proper for a ’86 OVA, the music fitted well. Some characters really annoyed me, but the great lead made for it.
It’s a pretty good recommendation for a mid to late 80s sci-fi anime title. You’ll not regret it.

Gall Force First 3 OAVs Well! One thing is sure, Kenichi Sonoda is a Master in regards to Science Fiction This anime from the late 80's is sure a Piece of Art, both in its animation and plot itself Pure science fiction, with a bittersweet taste to it, it might have inspired even those who created Babylon 5 or the lastest Battlestar Galactica series, as some of the ideas and concepts seen on those series are easily seen on these first 3 OAVs. Sad and yet with hope for the characters, it makes a nice critic to our own aggressive ways and the stupidity of war, where no one reallywins.
The last OVA, having a sad end to both warring races still sends a message for the future, and it had a something that Galactica failed to possess, a reason d'étre, a true validation to all the sacrifices and suffering the characters went throgh
Another thing is the time frames. On this series, making the action happen hundreds of thousands of years in the past is right and logically done, where Galactica did it just for effect, actually loosing the very attempted wish to create a dramatic and yet acceptable situation.
Kenichi Sonoda knows his stuff, and this is a sure Classic to be in anyone's anime collection, or science fiction collection even if you do not like animes.

Ah yes the first installment of the Gall Force franchise. I never heard about this series until recently when I was talking about Bubblegum Crisis in an obscure anime group. Which GF is no where near as good as Bubblegum Crisis so let's get that out of our way. But its not wonder this franchise never took off. I'll start with the pros though. Pros: Overall the animation itself is pretty good. Which is no surprise since the guy who does the illustrations did illustrations for the more popular Bubblegum Crisis and Gunsmith Cats. So I was impressed by a lot of the art and effects. Foran old anime that is approaching the age of 30 next year the sound department is pretty good. It's got those 1980s nostalgia soundtracks that is hard to forget. The sound effects are a bit dated but that just adds nostalgia.
The action is pretty continuous. Really exciting to watch. Some of the scenes kind of remind me of some action movie scenes. Note some of the scenes seem to have ripped off some Hollywood movies but I'll get into that later in this review.
Cons:
Characters are pretty bland. Like theres not much about them except for maybe Lufy and thats for only a limited time. I wish they could have more character development for them and more interesting aspects to these characters but must of them are your typical anime girls. Rumy is basically your typical loli but I'm not surprised since the guy who wrote this has a fetish for lolis. Yes he really does watch Anime Abandon's review.
This series is missing a few answers to a few questions like why? and how? The begining has no explanation as to whats happening at all. Its all the sudden women in space battles with explosions. There are many scenes in this anime that don't have any explanation. So this anime has a lot of unanswered questions.
I can only find the English dub for this sadly and I really wish I could find the subbed version cause the dub is so bad. The voices feel forced and some even feel emotionless. Were the voice actors having to be forced to dub this at the barrel of a gun cause that's what it sounds like. Some of the dubbed voices seem out of place with the characters as well.
This series also has seems to have ripped off classic scenes from big franchises. It rips of scenes from Star Trek, Star Wars, Rambo,Space Odyssey 2001, and even the Adam and Eve from the book of Genesis.
Overall with all the cons it's still a enjoyable anime. Good time cruncher and if your ever curious about the past and anime of the 80s this one may be of interest. You could say I liked this movie even with all of its flaws. It could even have a good laugh. Also if you watch this anime be prepared to see death cause it will surround you.

Excuse me, I'm Spanish and I don't usually write in English. If you want you can read my review in Spanish. One of the most popular and profitable franchises within the realm of the OVAs of the 80s was Gall Force, which for a lot of people is totally unknown due to its minor impact in the West. The origin of this multimedia franchise is in Star Front Gall Force, a 3D photonovela that appeared in the monthly Model Graphix magazine. Here were presented several of the characters that star in the film, which was produced and animated by the AIC and Artmic studios. Between themost prominent members of the staff are those responsible for Bubblegum Crisis (1987-1991) such as Katsuhito Akiyama or Kenichi Sonoda. Without reaching the splendor of the cyberpunk title, the quality of the animation is close to outstanding when the action erupts in the form of space battles.
Gall Force: Eternal Story (1986) is a war drama about the eternal conflict between two alien races. Despite the fact that this question has been addressed, to a greater or lesser extent, by several previous titles, among which Space Runaway Ideon (1980-1981) or Macross (1982-1983) stand out, what strikes me is the idea that both sides seek an agreement to avoid their mutual destruction. A peace agreement that would be carried out through the creation of a third alien race, which would be born thanks to the genetic combination of the two. From my point of view, this idea is sensational since among those destined to hate each other, the only one who can mediate between them is a third party who is both alien, but also aware of the conflict. An idea that reminds me of a later film like Wicked City (1987), although Kawajiri's film has a more interesting thematic and symbolic construction. What it does not have, however, is a failure that will be repeated cyclically in the following films.
Although I applaud such a solution I believe that this issue together with the war drama does not reach its highest point due to a series of inconveniences. In the first place, the action sometimes overshadows this theme due to the excessive attention it receives with long and abundant sequences of chases, space battles, etc. Second, the film's tone is inappropriate on multiple occasions, incapacitating the work to represent the seriousness of the conflict and explore the issues at stake. Comedy —generated above all by Rumy's comic relief— and eroticism —partial nudity, here and there— end up subtracting more than adding. Not extremely serious, but it clearly affects your presentation. Third, the background to the war is somewhat poor, with very little about the reasons that drive both sides to fight to the death.
Finally, the war drama is less effective than it should because the subjects of this misfortune are of no interest to the audience. Despite the attractive designs, the characterization of the characters is mediocre. They hardly define his character and personality correctly, except for Lufy. Among the group members, this tough and reckless aunt is distinguished by her personal background which reveals how hurt she is over the death of her former companions. In addition to this background, her personality caused friction in the group that, in turn, generated a strong dynamic. Unfortunately, Lufy is the first to fall so we run out of interesting characters. Perhaps she does not catch anyone by surprise that from now on many feel indifference to the fate of the rest of the crew. Although the aforementioned inconveniences do not completely detract from this historical title, had it not been present, we would speak of a remarkable or even excellent work.

Classic review as well for this one, an ALL female cast in this saga that spans from 1986 till 1996. First of all the animation u loved it or hate it (looking at the more older anime fans, 25+) to accept it , ot u are used to it, the story is interesting if u want to continue the whole story, and yes it has lots of big space battles, wich was a big thing in the 1980's anime, mainly by the macross influence. But the movie starts somewhat in the middle so there's not many leads to previous things that happened, and theyhave some faults here and there , but still quite ok nevertheless

OK may i just say for an anime from the 80's,the animation at times were better than must of the crumbs thatstudios feed us today.Especially scenes of space,battle scenes and special affects.Overall a good anime.
