This was recommend to me by a friend who said "OMG YOU HAVE TO SEE HAPPY WORLD!" Never have I felt so betrayed by a friend. There's nothing in this anime. You can see stuff like this but better in something like Ah! My Goddess or any ecchi series involving angels. Story: Poor. The "poor kid" is cursed with the worst life ever. The problem is it doesn't seem too bad. He just gets into alot of stupid accidents. He still has his entire family who seem in good health. It's kind of....comical the unhappiness and lack ofluck he has. But the problem is that it isn't presented well. Each episode as well is sort of self-contained. This works for something that's 24 episodes...look at Bebop...but for this it makes the entire thing seem inadequate. It feels incomplete, it has a beginning but no real end or sense of completion. Art: Inadequate. Terrible. It's done in a sort of cheap minimalistic style that makes the entire anime seem bland and monotone. It's colourful, but there's no feeling to anything. They also do this very annoying thing with hair and eyes. Whenever hair goes over the eyes it completely disappears. Some anime do this very well, but this one it feels hacked. Sound: The first time in a long time that I've ever noticed sound. And it's terrible. It suits the anime but only because it seems so incredibly superficial. The ending theme is a ripoff of a song off of Grease. Character: Characters are completely flat, no dimensions at all. The kid with this terrible curse is so annoying and he never really tries to do anything about it. The angel is just fanservice. I have no problem with fanservice...fanservice me all you want. But even this seemed cheap. Anytime her halo is ripped off she gets completely naked. She's able to "manipulate the light around her" so that she never has to wear clothes.....cheap. There's a monkey too....and if you watch this and wonder "wtf?" I wwondered the exact same thing. Enjoyment: I didn't enjoy this at all, I didn't laugh for most of the really cheap stuff that they did. This anime is very lacklustre, it's terribly thought out and proceeds far too slowly than the 3 episodes allow. An entire episode is spent on nearly a single event...an event that has absolutely no real significance. I don't recommend this anime to anyone, it's not even mindless fun.
Honestly, this OVA is an embarassment. Bad art coupled with a lame 3 episode arc from the early BORING days of the mangu do this franchise no justice. Do yourself a favor, read the manga, pretend you didnt watch this OVA or allow it to influence your opinion of Happy World! I should be reviewing the mangu. Heh. But, to sum up, don't judge the franchise based on this.
Happy world is a shy and somewhat unknown anime. When i first saw it on a listing i was drawn to the title. It seemed so bold for a name that i wanted to read more into it. The synopsis was not unappealing but i had to see for myself what exactly this had to offer me. Honestly in the ways of the synopsis it offers very little. It just deals with the main characters poor luck and a few slightly more original slice of life style episodes. The fact Elle is a angel is not really important to the series as she helps out atthe capacity of a normal kind bighearted person with the exception she generates good luck. I honestly dislike the main character cause hes just a punk. I mean hes mean to the people who are nice to him. I guess from the characters point of view he has never really had a good day so he is understandably grumpy. Later on in the ova you realize that even tho he is rough around the edges hes a generally warm guy under his hard shell. The art is simple and with a warm color pallet drawn in standard Pre-CGI animation. The backgrounds and scenery are not very memorable but i think the characters were had some pretty warm expressions. That's where i think i liked the art in this show is that when i saw there faces i really could sense feeling. The sound is generally up beat threw the whole experience except when a serious tone is taken. The best voice i give to Elle its just so sweet and pure sounding you cant help but think it would belong to a child angel. It is to bad the series was to short to get anywhere plot wise they really only scratched the tip of the iceberg i feel. If given more time it could have been much more interesting and well developed but sadly it was not the case. I think for what it was given it was a pretty sweet experience and i don't really have much complaints about it. So i am gonna give this a 5 for being Ok and a generally pleasant experience overall.
