If you're looking for a horror anime, Sekai no Yami Zukan is not the one you're looking for. It's more like a documentary than a thriller. Am I literally the only one who gets that? According to Anime News Network (and MAL before they changed it) "The anime seeks to evoke the retro atmosphere of pulp horror stories that were popular in the 60s and 70s in magazines". It is not made to make you feel scared. It's made to inform you about the horror stories from 40 years ago. Now I'm not exactly a fan of them, but from the little I know, it is apretty accurate representation. If you watch it, you should definitely keep that in mind.
I really enjoyed the different art style in every episode. It made me look forward to the next one every week. About the voice acting, I admit that it could have been better, but my guess is that it was a bit forced on purpose. I'd say it matches the acting in retro horror movies.
Please do not listen to the bad reviews. They probably haven't read that it is purposely not scary. If you are a fan of retro horror stories, this could be quite enjoyable. But again, do not watch it if you are looking for a thriller anime.

I actually enjoyed this anime. Though I would not call it the best anime ever, it was nice just for a quick little binge of 70's horror. So if you're looking for a good scare, this is not necessarily for you. However if you're looking for something creepypasta-ish, then you're in the right place. There is no real connecting force with these stories, they are just kinda random, which I think is what puts a lot of people off this anime. So that's just a small warning I guess. The stories themselves are pretty predictable, but that's oldie horror for ya. Some are a bit tooquick with their pacing in my opinion, but, then again, the episodes are very short.
There's nothing really to say about the characters, the episodes are too short to get attached to them, but I guess if you're a really sympathetic person or something, maybe you will? I just didn't until the last episode kinda.
The only episode I found "scary" was episode seven. However, the only reason why I thought it was terrifying is because the story was about a clown, needless to say, I'm terrified of clowns.
My least favorite story had to be episode twelve, which was about a mad scientist who turned people into "human fish". I just found it extremely rushed and terribly put together, the voice acting was a joke, and the artwork did not go well with a few scenes.
I loved how there was different art styles because some went better with that certain story. For example there was an episode, I cannot recall which one it was exactly, where it was in a world where humans turned into robots, (you know how I said it was 70's style horror, case and point) the art style was more geometric than the semi-realistic, cartoonish, and realistic art styles used in other episodes. I understand how changing art styles can be a turnoff to some people, but I think it was kinda cool in this case.
In conclusion, I think if you like old, classic, short, horror stories, then I think you should give this a shot. The episodes are only 3-5 minutes long, so you could easily watch every episode in a day.

Story Each episode tells a different story. For me in that aspect is interesting because I never knew what to expect. The stories were not complex or very long because the episodes are in average 3-4 minutes long but they are in no way confusing or predictable. Also, even though the episodes are really short, I never got the feeling that anything was rushed. It was fairly entertaining. Art The art is not the usual one so I guess plenty of people just drop out the show because of it. However, since every episode was different I was always expecting to see something that surprised me. Ialso think the director was trying to achieve the supernatural and horror mood of these stories, and that can explain the animation.
I think if fit every story perfectly. So no complaints about that.
Sound
Characters voice actors were, as usual, really good at conveying the mood and emotions. Nothing bad to say about that. And the soundtracks were not impressive enough to make me look for them later but they suited every scene.
Characters
Since every episode had a different story and characters, it is not easy to focus on one specifically. I did not have the time to explore their personalities or development. Let me remember, once again, that each episode had 3-4 minutes, so even though things were not rushed, I can’t say much regarding the characters.
Enjoyment
You either like or hate it, that is how I see it. There is no middle ground here. Some people just hate the art style or the fact that they are short episodes, but I also like to see something different from what I usually watch. If you also fancy a change now and then, this anime is for you.
I don’t think I would rewatch it but I would recommend to some people who are not turned off by this type of show.
Overall, I can I enjoyed it.

First and foremost, I must mention that this is NOT meant to be an outright horror anime in the typical sense. Its presentation is almost storybook-esque, but with a more informative style to it. It's a ga-anime, which is extremely niche, but means you can expect a slideshow presentation instead of animation. There's still ambience and a little music, limited voice acting, but also a narrator. It can also be watched in bite-sized segments due to the fact the episodes are just over 4 minutes long, which benefits the show as the simplistic stories never feel like they overstay their welcome. Now, here's the kicker aboutthe show: it's MEANT to be hokey as all heck in honor of old horror flicks, and so you got a wide variety of extremely wacky scenarios played off as serious. The result is a somewhat fun little series that has some charm and got a couple chuckles out of me, personally. The art style varies widely episode to episode, and so do the stories. There's even a random episode featuring live action photographs, and an episode that contains drawings but also mixes in real eyes at one point for dramatic effect.
I think of the show as kind of like Goosebumps in that its level of spooks is campfire-like with artwork that'd not really fly for younger audiences in the west but be totally acceptable for the east. There's some sexualization depending on the episode, but never anything too raunchy. Think the sensuality of some of the women in distress in classic horror.
Despite my praise for this show, I do have to mention that beyond its unique presentation and premise, and my comparison to Goosebumps, it's got about a quarter of the charm of Goosebumps, and sits somewhere in the middle of what age group this series was targeting. It doesn't feel exclusively for younger audiences in Japan, but in a way, tone-wise feels like it was. That is, until you consider some of the nods to movies that would've definitely been for a much older audience that would've actually watched the older horror flicks.
I recommend giving the first 3 episodes a try, which is only about 12 minutes of your time to see if maybe this might be the series for you. Just remember, relax and don't take it too seriously. It's the kinda cheesy plot twists and nonsensical mess that I love, but I feel despite it being only "okay" in execution, I'll defend it due to its low ratings. My favorite is episode 5 for the art style and one heck of a stupid, beautiful twist, but the expressions of the clown in the live action one with the completely self-aware story is just icing on the cake.

Rate a 6 English subtitles Story Not sure of the exact origin of this show. I suspect it derives from old folk tales. Although none of them you except one or two of them you might not. The others are folk tales that you do know of like red riding hood but with a slight twist here and there. The message of the show is not make you run under the covers but to educate you on danger. Think of it this way if something goes wrong from an action you take you tend not to it again. Like touching fire for too long. If you do youwill be burned. Rather than learning these lessons first hand i applaud what we call horror films. For this is our free pass on life to learn these lessons. Sure it is not exactly first hand but it certainly can feel like it.
Ending was a real treat and a mystery. By ending i am referring to the drawing credits. You know the kind of trailer like setup that has bits and pieces here and there of the show? Without giving it away i would suggest paying particular close to the pictures. For i think they are an Easter egg for the future.
Art
Portrayed in a comic like fashion or a pop-up story book kind of fashion. While this story isn't exactly high in visual appearance it matches the mood perfectly. For again keep in mind the idea is to ease you into the message of danger horror is trying to teach you. So, don't be surprised if you run into still images or black and white situations. If that is bothersome to you i suggest watching some more episodes before giving up. For not all the episodes art is the same. Each episodes has a slight change or so.
Overall: While there was a moderate to little in terms of blood and gore this film was not only a fun watch but rare. Providing life learning lessons to along with haunting memories that you might not get anywhere else. For example, hitch hiking... what danger do you think lies in that? Some people might choose a side more than the other or others might be know-it-alls like my self and suggest it depends on the situation. While both are true to a point there is still room for other situations. In short knowing what you know might not help you with this show. In fact it might hurt you. Which is why i see it as fun. It proves that we humans while aware of danger act in dangerous fashion. Higher than what you would originally think.
