There are eleven girls that consist the C-class Ongaku Shoujo idol unit under Pine Records. Despite generating red sales marks and not being very popular, Producer Ikebashi and the members are trying their very best to up their levels. Nevertheless, Ikebashi suggests recruiting a new member for Ongaku Shoujo; someone who can act as a catalyst for the success of the group. Thus, an audition was opened, leading to the soon-to-be legendary group's meeting to a girl named Hanako.

First I have seen many different idol aime's and this one threw me for a curve. Right off the bat some of the characters have opposing characters to their look. Something you don't see everyday. The music like most idol shows was catchy and fun but they have variety not the same song all 12 eps. as for the performances i don't like the 3d dancing very much but the music made me forget about that animation for the most part. You definitely see all the characters grow in some way very typical focus on one character each ep but continue the many theme. Despitethe have people have for this show I really enjoyed it and plan to watch the movie. I also hope for a season 2.

I have seen my fair share of music related shows now and since music has a big part in my life, I feel pretty passionate about shows that tackle the idea. Here is another idol anime. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. I love Love Live but I know not everything is going to live up to that. What I didn't expect was for an idol show to fall so below the standard that I felt necessary to rant about it (check the episode 12 discussion). This is why Music Girls was one of the worst shows I have ever seen. A little bit of backgroundfirst... Ongaku Shouju started in 2015 with a 25 minute movie that was part of a bigger project (you should watch some of the other movies associated with it that are absolutely fantastic). One of those characters carry over and it throws in a nice reference, but overall doesn't really contribute much. I would much more recommend the movie, but even that didn't blow me away, just thought I'd put that information out there.
As far as this show goes, I saw many problems with it that just killed the show in a genre I love so much and usually give preferential treatment to. The most main of our main characters is Hanako, a girl with professional musicians as parents. She happens to notice this group of idols in the airport in the first episode as they put on a show. Although she has a slightly different idea of an idol, she still loves it. She decides she wants to help the group. What can she do to help you ask? Well the first episode leaves you with a very promising start and let me tell you why. She was an amazing dancer. She picked up what the group did after just one run. Sick, she has talent. Her parents are musicians, so she must be able to sing, right? Wrong. Her singing is awful and rather embarrassing. That, however, doesn't make the show bad. I would have LOVED to see her grow as a musician to help this group. So that's where the first episode leaves off. i'm invested, let's see her put in those hours. That wasn't it chief. Episode 2 essentially has her give up that dream and just sit on the sidelines as the manager for (almost) the entire rest of the show. Remember that for later. Also, Hanako's parents just kind of abandon her when they are on a trip in a foreign country. Umm, yeah, wtf. -10 points for bad parenting skills.
As far as characters overall, they weren't the worst I've seen by far. There were in fact some rather interesting and lovable characters (as to be expected from idol anime). They even have a cute lobster. Who doesn't love a cute lobster? Most of these characters get episodes with them getting over their own struggles, some more than others, and they weren't awful. There was actually one episode that made me tear up a little but that doesn't really make up for a garbage show. So characters, not awful, but not overly amazing either.
The art and animation was very subpar for an idol show. A lot of scenes looked really lazy and some looked pretty poorly drawn. Inconsistencies with main characters looking like background characters really turned me off from a visual standpoint. There just isn't much to say about this subject except very underwhelming.
For an idol show, the music throughout wasn't great. I have an entire section of my profile just for idol music and not a singular song from this show even came close to making it. The OST in the show was very forgettable on top of that. They created a show about music, and couldn't even deliver the music. That's saying something.
My enjoyment was affected by everything I wrote so far and my enjoyment score probably would have been a 1 if it weren't for that one episode that got me in the feels as it hit a subject a little closer to home. I'm ashamed but I can't deny it so it gets that. GGs.
Oh, you thought I was done talking about the story. Nah, I just needed a breather before I got too heated. It's a 1/10 for a reason. To wrap everything I have written about above has quadruped in awful quality in the last episode. A huge plot hole that was in the last episode is what caused me to rant about ep. 12 in that related discussion post. Read that for my full thoughts but I will keep it brief here and spoiler free since this part is at the end of the series. Essentially, episode 12 is just a land mine for a bad episode. One thing after another goes off in a pathetic attempt to close out the series. I have no idea how they were on time for the last episode, but it is very apparent that they did not put a lot of effort into it. It was incredibly hard to watch. The ending doesn't really make any sense at all and leaves an even more rotten taste in my mouth about the series as a whole despite just being one episode. I would have never thought that one episode could dish out such an effect, yet here we are.
Verdict: I would ABSOLUTELY NOT recommend this show to anyone ever. If you are thinking about watching this show after reading this, you are a masochist beyond myself and are just looking for a show to crap on.

In the last few years, we've seen more and more idol anime being produced. I'm a big fan of this genre, so I was looking forward to Ongaku Shoujo, but I'll admit it did fall a little short of my expectations. Story: Compared with other idol anime I've seen, such as AKB0048 and the Love Live! series, the story felt forgettable to me. Like with LL, there is an end goal for the group (headlining an arena show with 10,000 fans), but in some of the middle episodes this was referred to so sparingly that I forgot it was actually a plot point. When thegoal is reached in the ending episodes, I also feel like the way this happened was executed in quite a rushed way. However, a lot of this can be attributed to the Slice of Life elements of the series, so if you're familiar with this from others like it, or not, your mileage may vary.
Art: The art style for the show is standard for the genre; MC's are cute, with multicoloured hair, and are CGI-ified for song sequences. Again, this is something that you'll feel differently about depending on your experience with the genre, but personally, I felt some characters really stood out. Sasame Mitsukuri has a design that catches your eye. The CGI, however, is jerky and conspicuous at some points.
Sound: songs were catchy, with the OP being especially bouncy. The voice actors, too, largely fit their roles, though apart from Sasame I can't think of anyone who sounded particularly distinctive.
Character: if you're looking for in-depth analysis of all 11 girls, you won't get it here. Hanako is your run-of-the-mill girl who falls into the idol world, though her position as mostly a staffer instead of a group member does make a welcome change. However, the size of the cast does mean many of the Music Girls' members were inevitably shunted from storylines.
Enjoyment: I moderately enjoyed this series - and I think the key to that was that I wasn't expecting anything groundbreaking. Idol series turn off a lot of people due to their similarity, and it's for that reason that Ongaku Shoujo won't win many converts. However, if you're a fan of cute idols doing cute things that sometimes involve choreographed dance sequences, this may be a show you want to take a look at.

If you wanted to see this show because of Ongaku Shoujo circle... forget it. Just forget it. This one is a regular idol anime and nothing other than that. Watch the "movie" version instead, it's much better, shorter, and contains a semblance of Taishi works. If you came here because you expected an idol anime... I guess it's ok? Can't complain about art, can't complain about music if you can handle the regular jpop. The storyline is just as bad as everywhere else in this genre. Honestly, the show itself is rather boring. I highly recommend the original Ongaku Shoujo circle all of this originated from, however.Myself, I'd never expect to like electronic rock/pop/progressive trance. This one is really good though.

I mean Hanako was a prodigy of having a Perfect Pitch to be able to understand Music's sounds thoroughly, but having a worst voice was actually funny but at the end of the series that she just instantly transform that she can actually sing after a feud/fight/argue (without getting hurt) in CG Mode was actually unrealistic and my expectations really drowned. I am so in love with these kinds of animation but the "how well you animate/executed the animation and the plot" was too cruel. This Anime was supposed to inspire the watchers not get disappointed, there are always seems to be more fan-service than actually fulfillingthe Music needs, no varieties of songs and redundant Scenes of singing and dancing (that backgrounds are the only change product) *Heartbroken*
After episode 3-5, I lost my curiosity and understanding about this because of many feelers and the pacing was too advanced (Love Live was more Fun to watch).
I was actually glad about this Anime as a music genre but it is only focused on them, their scandals (which is a good thing that every Idol needs to surpass any obstacles), and music was so lacking in every episodes. (That I almost dropped it halfway, but the OP, ED gave me hope.
The background story of every characters are somewhat satisfying to a degree.
The characters development was lacking in pace.
P.S. I have to admit this anime has potential but the Animators really create a spectacular epic finalé that is obscene in my taste.
I Love Music but this didn't really make it deep into my heart.
Do not be blind because of great(kawaii) artwork, its fictional but some of it are still based on feelings/memories/experiences/etc.

I enjoyed this anime up until the last three or so episodes. Essentially the cry-me-a-river Uori bit. Your voice goes out and suddenly you're the pity party of the century? Get the fuck over yourself. The whole on-stage fighting/making up thing was also annoying. I get that they were going for some raw emotion to bring the group together, but doing it in that particular setting is so unprofessional. If I were in that crowd, that could have been one of my favorite bands from when I was a teenager up on stage, and I'd still leave if they had some weird fight/non-fight thing happening onstage.
Plus, isn't the common theme among idols that you're supposed to always be smiling and making the best of every situation? I don't remember if that was specifically said in this anime, but I'm just going to assume that it was. Instead, the power goes out during one of your most important performances, the microphones still fucking work because plot, yet you're going to sit there sobbing while your staff member tries to save your career for you. Okay.
Also what was that godawful CGI transition? They got to the end of episode 12 and were like, "Oh shit, I thought we had 百万円 for this final episode, but turns out it was actually 万百 oops." Well, what can you expect from the studio that brought you Deen/stay night?
Otherwise I mostly enjoyed this series. Slow pacing and attempted character development are okay with me, even if it only makes half sense. It's when you go full none-of-this-is-even-remotely-reasonable that you lose me. Throughout the non-cringey parts of the series, I liked many of the songs, the art was pretty good, and I certainly didn't have to force myself through it.

This is a solid 5/10 anime. There's nothing truly horrible about it - but there's also nothing particularly great about it, either. STORY: 6 Well it's... average. Honestly, I only finished watching this yesterday, and it already escapes me! Okay, no, I do remember it - it's just the most lackluster attempt at a 'spin' on Idol anime. While I can appreciate that Hanako is for once a realistic 'fan' - unlike the many other 'fans' who become instant idol talents by some kind of osmosis - the fact is that the story isn't really about her at all, and therefore falls into the usual 'idols chasing fameand mostly failing until the last moment' category.
ART: 7
Okay so, for the most part, it's pretty standard. There's way, way too much fan service considering the majority of the time it's excessively moe and girl-oriented, but ignoring that, there's quite a few moments when the art pushes the show a little more than, well, any other element. The costumes for example are all wonderfully done, walking the thin line between being a group and showing off the character's personalities. Indeed, the character art in and of itself is great, with actually different body types besides the standard tiny children and big-boobed giraffes, which helps figure out who is who in a rather large cast.

It's an idol anime so, I expected a whole lot ... well, more. What little they do have is catchy , and definitely fits with the aesthetics of the show, but it's far from unique, and it all sounds the same after a while, especially when there's so many other shows doing it better. You could almost convince me the Op was from LoveLive - if only it had a bit more beat.
Character: 5.5
They tried, they really did. But if LoveLive with 9 members struggled to keep down the cliches, an 11-member cast - and that's just the main girls, not the adults or rivals - there really wasn't any chance to avoid it. Cliches are not inherently bad, after all, it helps us understand who is who from the cast pretty quickly. But much like the music, it also means they don't stand out much from any other similar shows.
Overall, it's not a bad show, and I'd certainly recommend it to anyone looking for a quick watch between better releases - but I'm not about to campaign for a sequel or a movie.
