Shen Yuan has read enough xianxia novels to know that the protagonist will somehow cultivate the demonic path, take revenge on his scumbag master, and gain a massive harem along the way. So when he unexpectedly transmigrates into the world of Proud Immortal Demon Way, he knows exactly how the story is going to proceed. However, he does not get to play the role of the protagonist, but instead he becomes the scumbag master destined to suffer a humiliating defeat. Shen Yuan, now known as cultivation master Shen Qingqiu, makes it his mission to change his fate so that he does not fall to his disciple, Luo Binghe, the protagonist of the novel. Trying to break away from the cruel personality of the original Shen Qingqiu seems impossible as any uncharacteristic behavior is blocked by a monitoring system meant to keep him from derailing the plot. Shen Yuan must find a way to befriend Luo Binghe so that he has no reason to seek revenge on his teacher in the future. But with the set series of tragedies meant to befall the protagonist at the hands of Shen Qingqiu, this teacher has his work cut out for him. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

I couldn't remember a story that has impacted me the way Scumbag System has in the last few years. In many ways, the story hits really close to home because they deal thematically with many issues that I've been grappling with for a huge portion of my life: 1) On Predestination: the central premise of the novel is really about a person who finds himself transmigrated into the main antagonist role of the story and hence, has to find SOME way to change his life path in order to avoid a horrific death. One of the major themes that the story raises is the concept ofpredestination, ie is it even possible to change one's fate, especially when it's literally written out explicitly for you? There is also the presence of an omniscient System that doles out punishments and severe consequences for appearing too OOC, out of character and this severely limits what the character can behave. The antagonist can only circumvent his fate by making decisions that's already circumscribed by a higher power and it raises the larger question: how much agency do we have over our destiny? Is it possible to change your fate, especially when the System is stacked against your favour, and there are limits to how much you can change? 2) The Impact of Everyday Kindness: In Scum Villain, we see how small, random acts of kindness can have a culminative, butterfly effect that does not just influence other people's lives for the better; it also changes the course of destiny for everyone around you. Due to the transmigrated antagonist's acts of kindness, secondary characters who were supposed to die found themselves alive and played a crucial role in the antagonist's own survival. Side female characters who were supposed to be harem members in the original plotline for the protagonist grew to have backbones, distinct and independent personalities that extend beyond just being a romantic/sexual interest. The protagonist became gay. Kindness can make people gay. 3) On Egotism and Knowing Better: this really hits close to home. One of the biggest problems that the transmigrated antagonist displayed is that as someone who knew the entire plot of the original story, he assumes he knows the characterisation of each character and their motivations. In the first half of the story: he makes very accurate assumptions about how each character behaves but the main tragedy and the root of all the dysfunction that happens in the second half of the novel was because he makes many assumptions about the protagonist that's eventually revealed to be untrue. Because he thinks he knows better, he talks to the protagonist as though he is the central authority, without ever considering the feelings of the protagonist, or how his decisions may trigger feelings of trauma and neglect. Because he thinks he can predict what is going to happen, he treats every character as chess pieces without realising that they are 3-dimensional characters and so, very often do not act in accordance to what the original plot was. The main tragedy of the entire story, which the antagonist realised to immense guilt and regret at the end of the novel, is that by trying to prevent the protagonist from becoming evil, he was so focused on his plan to change the plotline, and he was so sure in his assumptions of who the characters were, that he embarked in a series of actions that misunderstood and mischaracterised the protagonist in traumatic ways that reproduced the cycle of neglect and abuse which he's trying so hard to avoid. Ultimately, he was responsible for protagonist's path to darkness because his egotism in thinking that he knew better blinds him to the ways in which he's actually hurting the person he loved the most. Yes, the relationship is extremely dysfunctional, but through that relationship, it brought out some very important messages about how easy it can be to hurt other people, and how a presumption that you know best can screw people up, especially when the other person is that emotionally reliant on you. The tragedy lies in the fact that he realised this too late.
Its a very ironical series. Basically it starts through mocking generic Chinese harem novel through protagonist point of view. So I thought it was going to do something unique. But later on, to my regret I found out the part they were mocking was not towards poorly done generic story but mock was going towards the harem genre. So the series itself turned out to be a poorly written generic Chinese Yaoi series baited as a harem series. But still its decent enough for atleast one time watch. Story- (5/10) Story is about protagonist transmigrated into a Chinese harem fantasy story as its antagonist and He isbasically trying to prevent his death flags from happening in that story. Premise would have sound interesting if I had not watched anime with same story premise before. Yes, I know of two anime which has same story outline (1 chinese - There's a Pit in My Senior Martial Brother's Brain and 1 japanese - My Next Life as a Villainess). Atleast execution of story is not so bad, but still its generic. Art - (6/10) Compared to other chinese anime, the CGI is better than average. Though don't expect too much. Sound - (6/10) It is more or less like every chinese anime. OP was average. Character - (4/10) Other than protagonist and his disciple (who is actually the instoryworld protagonist), every other character is bad. Maybe it is purposefully done like that to show that Chinese harem story is trash, but still that makes this story less enjoyable. Especially all the female character except for one were worst that rubbish. Even that one female character is only slightly better. Though Protagonist and his disciple dynamics were good Enjoyment - (5/10) It was somewhat enjoyable, Atleast not boring enough to drop it. One things I expected from a Chinese anime is to have good action. While action was present, I was not very good even from Chinese anime. There was one scene which particularly annoyed me was a fight between 2 female character. Instead of fight, that turned out to be some sort of weird dance where basically another character is explaining it as some sort of hyper movement fight which eyes cant see. Yes, it basically a joke towards action in chinese harem series. Overall - (6/10) Even for a yaoi series, there are better Chinese anime out there than this one. But if u can look past the mocking nature where it ironically fell flat and it baited nature, then its not a bad series to watch either
This is great!!! I had so much fun watching it. The team really put their hearts into this, and you can tell in every single scene. It is fun, it is heartwarming, and I'd even say unforgettable. I will treasure my experience watching this forever. You can tell at once that the team is deeply familiar with the novel, the characters, and even the fandom. When I first heard about this novel getting a donghua, I was skeptical about whether it'd be able to replicate the same atmosphere the novel has (hilarious with a touch (or a lot) of sadness at certain moments), but theysurprised me! This did not only meet but even surpassed my expectations. I love the style, the characterization, the voice acting, the songs, the pace, everything! I definitely recommend it!
As a fan of the book, I absolutely LOVED this donghua. They didn't stray much from the novel and the makers did their best to make this as entertaining as possible! I love SQQ and the donghua just made me love him even more. Somewhere while watching, I felt like the quality of the animation deteriorated a little after episode 7, but keeping that aside, everything seemed close to perfect in my opinion. The ending of the season was abrupt, and the bonus scene towards the end had me frustrated, but as long as there's a season 2, fans will be fine... mostly... Luo Binghe iskinda pitiful..? And Shen QingQiu is just plain hilarious at times! It's definitely worth a watch! I can't wait for season 2!
This show is a parody of over-the-top Chinese harem novels/shows. The premise is a typical Isekai set up but, rather than being excited about that, the main character is upset because the novel he gets sucked into has flat characters, terrible world building, and is overall just super cliche and ridiculous. He's given the task of fixing the plot of the story as part of his transmigration. However, he ends up inhabiting the body of the main villain and, as a result, is way more concerned with surviving the villain's terrible fate at the end of the book, that he is with improving the storyin any meaningful way. What ensues is a bunch of wonderful nonsense. The really strong parody elements might not be for everyone, but as someone who's a big fan of this genre, I found all the ways the author poked at it to be super hilarious. One minute the main character is trying to act like the super cool villain he's supposed to be embodying, and the next moment he's having a meltdown because another villain won't stop monologuing and he is o v e r it haha. In general, these first eleven episodes are super fun and super charming. it might not be for everyone but it's a great quick thing to binge if you're looking for something fairly light hearted. Final note is that there is the start of a BL/Shounen-ai romance lightly implied throughout this first season. However, due to Chinese censorship, I'm guessing that it's unlikely the relationship will ever be explicitly stated or explored.
I watched it because I had nothing to do and as soon as the first episode started, I was already laughing out loud. I don't usually watch Chinese anime (mostly because of the animation and funny voices) but this one, by the end of the first episode, I was already hooked and was wanting for more. I think that this anime has a very unique story with entertaining characters, funny dialogues and scenes, and it is really refreshing to watch. The comedy is totally here and the way the main character expresses himself to all the arising situations is just totally on point. The artis good enough according to me, like I've seen worse and I think that the anime's art style has a pretty good level (the monsters are really ugly monsters though). Some 'fighting' scenes are really cool to watch while some are just hilarious to me based on the way it's animated. Though, to conclude, I enjoyed myself throughout the whole thing and I HIGHLY recommend it to everyone!!
Watched this on the strength of Mo Dau Zu Shi (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation or The Untamed) as it is by the author Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (MXTX). Story It's outstanding. The first episode had me in stitches. The protagonist, Shen Yuan is a normal guy who posts his opinion that he doesn't like how predictable and full of tropes a novel is, slamming the do gooder hero who defeats all villains and gets all the girls to join his "harem". Another poster rightly points out he's stupid because he's paid money to READ the whole novel (true) and he gets trolled and slammed on the internet, bad. Then, somehow it turns into an Isekai where he gets sucked into the world of the novel, waking up as Shen, Qingqiu, the main villain who is destined for a bad end. He does his best to try and change the ending of the story ... so he doesn't end up dying / suffering. Shenanigans and hilarity ensue. It's funny, desperate, touching ... the story is great. Art Scenery and characters started out beautiful but got less and less good as it went on. Around Episode 8 they ran out of budget (I believe) as the backgrounds ended up being blocky, and the creature designs were poor, like worse than video game quality bad, some looked like they belonged in 1980s arcade games, it was that bad. Perhaps if they had animated it the same way as Mo Dau Zu Shi it would have turned out better, but the CGI form is both a blessing and a curse. Could not score it higher even if I wanted to. Sound No issues here - both OP and ED are nice, as are the effects. It is not outstanding though. Character Protagonist (Shen, Qingqiu) and the "fake" main character of the book / game Luo Binghe are very well developed. Every one else seems like a pretty bad caricature. The biggest weakness is all the females (destined to be part of Luo Binghe's future harem) feel cookie cutter cut and paste, there is literally nothing differentiating them and they pretty much began to blend together. This was quite a disappointment as I'm sure they are much more fleshed out in the novel (which I have not read). Enjoyment It's hard not to enjoy this show. The story is really good, the protagonist of the show (and the "protagonist of the game / book" are both very likeable. The plot moves along the entire hero's journey. I liked it so much we binged this in 1 night. Overall Tropes are made fun of in a satisfying fashion. I would have enjoyed it more if it were longer, so here's waiting for season 2. Definitely would have scored this a lot higher if the animation quality had kept up with the story. Still, this was a fun, fun watch.
Just a short review for this one. TL;DR style. - This show has some janky modeling and rigging for the CG characters, and the faces are a little same-face-y. It also reruns scenes sometimes in a way that indicates they were padding. These are the major art flaws, but otherwise it's still quite nice, particularly for CG. - The creators clearly love the IP. This is something that's very very important to a show. There are a lot of little details they did a good job of putting in. - Again, no experience with the book, and I enjoyed it immensely. You may be disappointed if you read the novel and want that exact experience again. - The comedy is gold. This is like all the jokes from MDZS and TGCF, but on a constant stream. I was laughing pretty much the whole time.
(Well...I finally got around to watch Scumbag System...) The story revolves around a normie guy, Shen Yuan, who gets transported into a harem xianxia novel. Not as the protagonist, but as the villain and former Master, Shen Qing Qiu. With the power of the SYSTEM, Sheng Qing Qiu must find a way to change the story and avoid his horrifying ending of the original novel. Now, at first glance, this synopsis sounds a bit familiar, don't you think? It reminds me of Overlord in a sense of the main character being transported into the world of the novel (Sheng Qing Qiu) or game (Ainz) and having toadjust to the world they find themselves trapped in. Although Sheng Qing Qiu is OP, being a cultivation master and all, the SYSTEM makes sure that he doesn't cheat, making sure that Sheng Qing Qiu's fight for survival as fairly as possible. Animation-wise, it was better than I thought. At first, I was skeptical of the 3D animations, it was actually quite impressive, and my first exposure to a fully 3D animated series. Story-wise, it's impressively satirical, usually with Sheng Qing Qiu pointing out common tropes and using his knowledge of the novel to his advantage. Overall, despite its somewhat short runtime, it turned out WAY better than I thought.
I still can't believe the only reason I finished this was because of the sanitary pad commerical yet here we are. I dropped this donghua many times because I couldn't get the hang of it but the pad commerical made me want to finish it. Cumplane is still the best ship please don't attack me. Shen Yuan is a clown and I love him so much it's definitely different compared to other Mo Xiang's novels or works but good comedy nonetheless. Was geniunely surprised when it got the contract to the adaptation because it's plot is, out there. Probably one of the weirder donghuas if I'mbeing honest.
I watched all episodes and I was laughing out loud and really enjoying the MC's dialogue with the system. The animation style could feel a little weird and off at the beginning, but it grew on me and I fell in love with it. My only qualms with this series are that I feel as though I don't get enough info in learning about several characters. I would have liked to see more interactions between other characters and the MC. But there really isn't much that I think is bad about this, except for how short it is and some pacing problems. Just give this ago and see if you'll enjoy it too.
I went to watch this with the lowest possible expectations. As a big fan of Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's works, I was originally very excited to see that her earliest novel was being adapted into an animation. I was later absolutely horrified to see that it would be in 3D. Unlike Mo Dao Zu Shi and Tian Guan Ci Fu, this series has a totally different style of animation that I find completely unappealing. HOWEVER... I watched all of this in a day and I loved it. Don't get me wrong, I hate the 3D animation still. It's jarring and incredibly hard to do right, (especially forlow budget television series,) but everything else was so good that I couldn't bring myself to dislike it. In contrast to her later works, Scum Villain is actually a parody of the historical Xianxia genre. It points out a lot of the tropes and cliches that are prevalent in these stories... And as someone that has recently just fallen into the ever-deepening pit of Xianxia... I really enjoyed it. The main character, Shen Qingqiu is really funny and likable. The voice acting for him, in particular, is very well done. Out of all three of MXTX's protagonists, I think he might just be my favourite. I can't help but wish this was 2D-animated, however. I guess I'll always have a bias. Nevertheless, it is easy to look past it when you come to realise how good of a show this is. Definitely give it a watch.
i dont really like to write reviews but since i fell in love with this donghua and this is my first time giving a 10/10 i should prob stated why. - i watched the two other donghua created by the same author and oml, this one is just the best of the bunch. - i had my doubt first because im not used to 3D animation. however, after seeing this i notice how idiotic i am for not seeing this sooner. the visuals are GREAT really breathtaking, which makes me enjoy this so much. and How, detailed down to the character's hair moved. - the characters especially SQQis really lovable, of how he could have this really respected and wise side outside but in the inside he is just screaming internally and complaining just about everything. i personally is a simp for that kind of duality. there are many scenes that make me ROFL and some give a nice chuckles - the story itself is easy to process, unlike mdzs which for me kinda confusing. the humor really lighten the mood totally recommend this to anyone who wants to try watching donghua for the first time
I am mxtx biased. Lovel their novels. The 3d donghua adaption of SVSSS was a a new experience? (first time, I think, watching a 3d animated series.) They changed a bit of the story in the adaption but still followed the main events of the novel, so that's good! I actually enjoyed the donghua but it was a bit awkwardly animated? like some of their movements and head nodding, stuff like that but it was fine, just funny to look at. Sad they ended season 1 on the important part but looking forward to season 2. I would say give it a try, it mightnot be everyone's favorite but it might be enjoyable for some. ..extra Everytime Luo BingHe said "Shizun"...fr was about to punch the screen, jk but stop🙂
