With a dignified veteran's body and a long white beard, summoner mage Dunbalf was one of the strongest player characters in the virtual reality online multiplayer roleplaying game Ark Earth Online, even heralded as a one-man army. Together with the "Nine Wise Mages" and King Solomon, they formed the mage player Kingdom of Alcait. But one day, Dunbalf and the other Nine Wise Mages suddenly go missing, leaving no trace behind. In an effort to spend his expiring credits, Dunbalf had purchased a cosmetic kit and tinkered with his character; however, he accidentally fell asleep during the customization process. Upon waking up, Dunbalf not only notices that the world of Ark Earth Online has become more realistic, but also discovers that he has turned into a cute girl! After reaching Alcait, he learns it has been 30 years since he supposedly disappeared. Now tasked with finding the other missing mages by King Solomon, the avid role player proclaims his new identity as Mira—the Pupil of the Wise Man Dunbalf—and ventures forth to prove his legacy. TLDR I watched this since it was there in Muse Asia, and I had never thought id ever have a more enjoyable time watching YT ads than anime. Bad CGI is forgivable but the laughable amount of still frames, the same soundtrack being used everywhere even though it does not even fit, convoluted storytelling with several boring infodumps that only get MORE convoluted and stupid as the show progresses. everything about this show is lazy. The only plus I could see is MC having a pretty nice wardrobe and looking anywhere from slightly adorable, to the borderline-hentai-manga-loli type of cute in her numerous outfits. Full review:- Ifeel bad for people who are using subscription services since this is clearly not what they signed up for. The new feeling of my internet bandwidth being “wasted” emerged when I watched this and I got it for FREE on YT . It's hard to even quantify and remain unbiased because this “show” hardy even passes to be called an ACTUAL ANIME. you will have a hard time finding any actual 2D animation other than generic mouth movement with faces that remain expressionless most of the time. There is no reason to even bother to call it a video at times, any ATTEMPT at an action scene is always either a CGI mess (which is almost on berserk 2016 level) or absolute STILL frames with a lot of cringe background shouting that is just pictures FFS XD. A seasoned anime trash watcher can call this bullshit out in the first ep XD. The whole of the first episode is spent describing the game and why MC is good and OP with boring dialogue, annoying CGI battles with carbon copy D&D Monsters, wherever CG is not possible minimal or no animation with still frames are fed right in. The rest of the half episode you witness ZERO dialogue whatsoever, I wonder if they simply forgot to record. Generic Loli walks round sniffs flowers, panties grass, and pissing. I SHIT NOT that's what she does for the rest of the episodes and even her eyes arent drawn XD. If for some magical reason you decide to continue…… The show has Info dumps that get so god dang boring, you keep moving in circles, it feels like doing side quests in a fuckin RPG, the MC basically gets ordered round to find this guy then that guy then this guy, and on and on it goes, that is the only excuse the show uses to drive the plot forward, IF this is how the manga or LN also progresses, I have no clue why it is even remotely popular. Plot:- (4/10) NO just No, one would probably find a more compelling story on a free Japanese V novel. VA, Sound, and OST (4/10) The same loli intro scene from episode 1 OST keeps playing loops even if the scene totally does not match. Standard RPG type ED and OP which are good but forgettable after the first hearing, not to mention the stupid as fuck walking simulator ED scene which totally kills its replayability chances. The MC VA is pretty good at the character archetype she trynna plays the rest are as generic as they come. Animation and art (3/10) ALL the Budget is spent lewding the loli which too is pretty low quality by today's standard. Character (2/10) At least their names are funny IG. Watch the first episode, LAUGH. DROP. Forget. the end. Don't suffer as I did.
A good way to judge the quality of a show is seeing how many characters or plot points you can name off the top of your head. The fact that the only character I remember is Mira, and I don’t remember any plot points except the utter abomination of the first episode speaks volumes about how forgettable this series was to me. The first episode of any series is an extremely important one, you hit it, the watcher will be hooked, but if you miss it, the watcher will either leave, or continue with less enthusiasm. I would be someone in that latter category. I wasso put off by the back half of the first episode that the sour taste it left lingered on throughout the rest of the show, but even if I overlooked the first episode, there’s not much to praise about the show. The jokes don’t land, the characters are bland, the world is boring, and there isn’t much to be excited about. My grading criteria: Story: /25 Art: /10 Music: /10 Characters: /20 Enjoyment /15 Thematic Execution /20 STORY: 3.8/25 Now we’ve seen this formula before, someone gets reincarnated as an overpowered character in a game, but in this case, Danblf, which is definitely not a lazy renaming of Gandalf, one of the nine wise men, becomes a little girl named Mira, who inherits most of Danblf’s abilities and shines in the world she lives in, solving any and all problems the world throws at her. There isn’t much to the story at all, and its fundamental problem is introducing all these plot points up, like the Soul Howl, the nine wise men, the Chimera Clausen, plus a lot of other filler, and not really resolving much of it well. Otherwise, there are no details I remember from the story at all, as the finer bits and pieces are just too forgettable. ART: 1/10 Deplorable use of CGI, and poorly executed action scenes really detracted from the immersion. Most of the action scenes took place in stills, which really isn’t all that interesting. MUSIC: 6.3/10 Brownie points for music because I’m a sucker for any anime music to give it a bad score. Pretty generic music for a fantasy. CHARACTERS: 3.5/25 The characters besides Mira really added nothing to the story, King Solomon was just there to spout random facts about the world. For the rest of the characters, let me spout some names for you: Luminaria, Zeph, Tact, Fricka, Leticia, Emera, Asval, Frone. Could you tell me who was who in this story without looking it up? Probably not, and that goes to show how interesting they were. Out of those characters I listed, you might remember who Fricka is, yes, that glasses girl whose only gag was being overly obsessed with Mira. Speaking of gags, the comedy was just so mind-numbingly bad that the main character’s only comedic bit was that she apparently needs to pee a lot (don’t we all?), which was just so… off to me. The only half decent character was Mariana, Danblf’s aide, because there was that emotional moment between Mira and Mariana that was probably the only good part of the show. ENJOYMENT: 2.7/15 I checked out pretty early here, but I got through it. THEMATIC EXECUTION: 5.5/20 A typical power fantasy theme that at points were pleasant, but it was mostly boring. The world-building was dealt with using too much dialogue, a case of telling instead of showing, and that really didn’t help building the fantasy theme up. OVERALL: 22.8/100 I’m sure most of you are just going to criticize the animation, and use that as your main complaint, but there is basically nothing good about this show besides that even. It is generic, boring, and just not funny. Just a forgettable show with not much going for it. However, except for the animation, there’s not much honestly that is inherently “wrong” with it, it’s just not an enjoyable experience overall, it was a project adapted so awkwardly I don’t really have much to say, except that there are a whole lot more better isekai out there.
Why am I even reviewing this? I have to say that this is a prime example of one of the worst shows I have ever seen to this day, and I purposely watch shows that are the lowest rated on MAL from time to time. First I’ll go over the one redeeming factor for this entire show. The main character is cute, and they make a point to force the story to dress her up in as many ways as they can in a short timeframe. Outside of that, I cannot think of a single thing that someone would really enjoy about it. If you like powerfantasies then this might work out, but you also require other perspectives to enjoy it too: 1. Ignoring terrible cgi and horrible fights that reuse nameless monsters 2. Don’t mind lack of characterization and 1-dimensional stock characters everywhere 3. Watching the epitome of “We know the Isekai genre is doing great right now so let’s make another terrible one about literally anything” If you want to watch a power fantasy isekai with a cute character, just go watch Sword Art Online. I recognized this show was bad in the first episode, but nothing could prepare me for how much worse it could get.
The show where the "old man transforms into a loli" story plot becomes a reality, and all that nuttiness...amounts to nothing. Tuesdays in the Winter 2022 season are allocated to gender-bender Isekai (well, except for Tensai Ouji) shows, and having 2 series go head-to-head against each other and airing one after the next, was a real treat: Fantasy Bishoujo a.k.a FabiNiku vs. Kenja no Deshi wo Nanoru Kenja a.k.a She Professed Herself Pupil of the Wise Man. While FabiNiku ultimately won the battle being the better executed show, Kenja no Deshi lost the war badly by being a somewhat worse adaptation of the source material, andit's not for lack of trying consider the staff behind this. The story in a nutshell, is that if you take the SAO narrative, pureed it in a similar fashion to this season's Shikkakumon no Saikyou Kenja a.k.a The Strongest Sage with the Weakest Crest, gave it a makeover similar to Leadale no Daichi nite a.k.a In the Land of Leadale, and mash them all to make this show. And for one, you might think that novelist Hirotsugu Ryuusen took notes and copied ideas from similar series to make it his own, only 2 out of 3 "inspirational" works made it here (SAO and Leadale) since those works came before Kenja no Deshi started its publication in Syosetu in April 2012. This source is easily a decade old, and it seems that an anime adaptation of this was really in no hurry to come out...until now, and somehow it flopped even harder than the source material which is decent to say the least. With the world's setting done, let's introduce the characters...or rather, the only one character that really matters. The MC is Danblf Gandagore (a pun on names derived from Lord of the Rings's Gandalf and Harry Potter's Dumbledore), one of the 9 Wise Men of the kingdom in a yet-similar SAO rip-off VRMMORPG. He is respected as the strongest Wise Man magical sorcerer hero, helping out a similar friend: Solomon, whom like Danblf, is a player and king whom created the in-game kingdom together with the Wise Man. For some strange programming reason, Danblf uses a cash item in his inventory, only to be transformed into a silver-haired, blue-eyes-blue, cute and petite girl, that to add some nonchalance to it, the retainment of his powers. Obviously, anyone whom has relations to the original Danblf will instantly recognize the OP powers, so she has no choice but to profess herself as the pupil of the Wise Man while taking on an alias name: Mira (which is a derivative of the the real-world player's family name, which means mirror). All that is fine and all, but the series really has one overbearing "fanservice" in common: and that's the peeing scenes. In a strange twist, for all the work that Danblf has built during his time, in every crevice there exists a toilet that Mira can use, or even doing the deed outdoors. Like, why is this a thing? Sad to say that I can not give two flying fishes about the other characters, they're just very basic and work as what would be expected of them to do. Any work that Studio A-CAT tries to do, there is but only one word that rhymes with all of the production: mediocrity. It's safe to say that quality was never the word when it comes to the studio's mission and vision, because it just looks like crap that's indicted because of the crappy CGI and a hefty amount of still shots. Director Keitarou Motonaga can be a chad when he does things right, but as an in-house studio director, this really is the lowest of the bottom of efforts given as the show is butchered of its source content right from the get-go, that it feels like the show is literally D.O.A. I kinda wished the music segment can hold up, but it's the same story with the rest of the anime. Don't get me wrong, Asaka CAN create good songs (as evidenced from series like Yuru Camp), it's just that for this show, while "Ready Set Go!!" is a good song I'd like to listen to more on its own, there's just this feeling that the back of my mind, isn't the same Asaka-like quality that I've come to expect. Idol group Erabareshi has been around for more than a decade, though their roles in anime are less than desired, and it's no wonder that it feels like a throwback when they did the ED for Hajimete no Gal back in Summer 2017, like damn. They're very forgettable, as well as the totally lazy ED visuals of just a simplistic PowerPoint-like video. I never doubted that works done by studios with bad reputations will be avoided by most people, and Kenja no Deshi happens to be that anime whom got the boot to working people whom didn't care about the source material at all, making significant changes that only degrade the anime to be the inferior version. Take my word that there's absolutely nothing unique about Kenja no Deshi, it's just tropes copy-pasted, spliced and re-hashed again and again. But I guess you can say that if you like being baited or catfished by a loli, then by all means, enjoy this "Isekai" for what it's worth.
I'm not sure why there are so many abysmal reviews here on MAL. I thought it was a wholesome enjoyable little series. Fun to watch and easily bingeable. I do wish they'd made somewhat of a bigger deal about everyone being trapped in the isekai world, not being to log out, what's surely happened to their bodies in 30 years, and so on. Those facts are utterly glossed over and all but ignored. And I don't really like that. That aside, it was an enjoyable watch. Though expect somewhat more of a wholesome entertaining experience like Bofuri rather than something hardcore and super serious like Overlord. I canunderstand why some people complain, as not a whole lot happens if you're looking for X and Y major plot points and resolutions and such. It's somewhat more of an adventure, and still very much still working on the primary task having not really made much progress as of yet. Sort of like you might expect in a 200 episode shōnen but of course this is only 12 episodes so they haven't gotten all that far into it. They've only really just begun unraveling some of the mysteries, and barely brushing the surface of some others. The main character's absolutely adorable by the way. Maybe not quite Bofuri adorable, but still pretty darn cute.
Generic. That's a word your going to see a lot in this review because that perfectly describes it. Going into the season this was honestly one of my most anticipated shows. I had discovered this show when I had just finished reading “The boy who cried wolf tells a lie today also”(which to this date is one of my favorite manga) which got me a bit interested in the Gender Bender genre. The premise for this show sounded intriguing and I was excited to see what it had to offer. As you might have guessed I was disappointed with the result. The show makes littleto no attempt to take advantage of its Gender Bender gimmick. It's mainly used to help hide the MC’s identity which he didn’t have to be gender-bent to do anyways. Other than that it's just used for some bad fanservice scenes. Added to the fact that it’s really just complete generic. Art:3 If you didn’t know already this show uses CGI. It's not good CGI like some other shows have either. It’s just really bad CGI. It's clunky and looks super awkward for the most part. Even without the CGI, the art in this show is just so bland. It does nothing to try and catch your eye. The character designs are also bland. None of them are really bad but none of them are good either. Sound:5 For the most part, there was either an awkward silence or just are really generic music track playing. Nothing was really memorable at all. The voice acting was fine but not really anything special. The Op and Ed were pretty nice tho. But in the end, they aren’t anything special either. Just overall very generic Characters:3 I usually find my main source of enjoyment in anime to be the characters. A good cast of characters can bring a show up from a 6 to a 9 to me. This show just didn’t have it. The only characters that I even remembered besides the MC were the MC’s maid and this weird girl who was a pervert to the MC and was in like 2 episodes. The characters are just so generic so they ended up being super forgettable. I know I have been using the word generic a lot but there really is no better way to describe the characters and really the show as a whole. Story:4 There is no story. If there was a story I just failed to notice it. The majority of the show just consisted of the MC doing various miscellaneous tasks. Then showing other people his op skills which was almost always some sort of CGI monster. I'm honestly fine if a show is like this. This season's “In the Land of Leadale” pretty much did the exact same thing. But that show had lots of other things that made me interested and enjoy the show. This one simply did not. Enjoyment:6 It was sometimes entertaining to watch. But honestly watching any other anime you usually give me more enjoyment. There were some nice scenes but it was usually outweighed by the show having a whole bunch of nothing to offer. I honestly don’t really mind shows that are generic too much. Normally a show like this would be around a 6 for me. What was really disappointing is that this show could have been so much more. I think the perfect way to show what the show could have done is to compare it to fellow winter 2022 shows “Life with an Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout” and “In the Land of Leadale” which are fellow gender bender and VR MMORPG Isekai respectively. I honestly don’t think either of these two anime are all that amazing. But they play their respective roles so much better than this show does. Starting with “Life with an Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout”. This show is generic in every possible aspect except with the Genderbender aspect. Unlike this show, it takes full advantage of it. Almost every joke in Fantasy Knockout is based on the gender-bent character. Sometimes it does get old but it has likable characters and great production values to back it up. Something that this show lacks completely. Even the way they travel is affected by the gender-bend. The majority of the obstacles and enemies they face are only there because of one of the gender-bent dude. By doing all this the show ends up transforming from something generic to something completely unique. Going to the VR MMORPG aspect side. “In the Land of Leadale” also does a much better job than this show. Like this show, the VR MMORPG is used as the source of the MC’s op powers but it's also used to introduce the protagonist's children. Her children serve as the main focus in the earlier episodes and there are lots of wholesome interactions with them. They also have something that this show lacks: Personality. It gave me reasons to care about the show. It also was pretty easy to understand what Leadale was about and what it was trying to be. On the other hand, I am honestly not sure what this show was trying to do. I haven’t read the light novel but I’m sure that it's much better than the anime. Defiantly in the art aspect just by looking at some of the illustrations. If you for some reason still have interest in this show just read the light novel instead. Other than that just watch “Life with an Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout” or “In the Land of Leadale” instead. Overall 5/10 Don’t waste your time on this.
This is a forgettable but fun anime. It's like Land of Leadale with the VRMMO setting and overpowered protagonist who develops a close network on this game they're trapped in. The plot is largely irrelevant but it's simple, fun trash that I highly recommend for those who like relaxing shows, or something simple while your tired and laying on the sofa because you don't have the energy for anything else. No prizes for guessing which category I was in. If you like mid-tier Isekai that's designed to be simple relaxing fun with no romance nonsense or edgelord garbage then this is for you. Bofuri is thetop-tier example for this kind of show, and while this isn't up to that standard it is fun and I really enjoyed all the characters you meet along the journey. There really isn't a lot more to say than it's simple, low energy fun.
In original manga story from first chapter, I really like this title like getting hype when this one got adaptation. Who knows that the first episode it's true might some people will drop it off because almost about half-quarter is just no conversation, only "he" going home with "his" new body. To be a fair reviewer, I've straight ahead and decide to watch through until it's finish aired. The next about half, I see this have dropping to 5 score for a bit. Keeping try to positive and I finished it. It's just get only one point up, honestly as fan of this work is quitebit off expectation. Many going missing such skipped story making many hole thorough the series, when I can smile my self for reading the manga, here I got just "pathetic grin(?)" like how this one turned this. The intensity of action scene it really loss, they just deciding use many stop motion. Not to blame for using CG, but even CG it didn't mean for make robotic move and can't do the more natural one. The overall visual in 2D art is quite good, so maybe this problem is went to human skill or studio management. Better luck next time! The sound quality from VA is general standard quality no problem here, the sound effect have bit miss, but I feel so sorry for the OST either OP or the ED. The arrangement somehow try to make feel happy but once again the movie visual didn't catch up the quality so people get pissed off, the basic concept of MV plot is contribute make the OP and ED mush likely to skip. The character they did it well, but pity for someone who write and plan the story of this show make them didn't introduced properly. Many anime that have colossal cast have a good, manage to make side even minor have nice appeal but this miss many. For the development let's take the Mira and Solomon, it didn't change much. It hurts too push expectation and last episode event SoL anime like Gold Mosaic have small conflict that make your bit worried, this anime didn't have any sensation nor even make your go "Badump!" Really flat sensation. Going for packing up for summary, the another anime Leadale that I think it will be downer turned out to be better than this. If this will be a season 2, I want this taken to another studio that capable to make it. The summoner with many things is like going to big scale war, just like Mira (MC) title "he" has. Not easy to create one scene with that lot of stuff on screen and unfortunately this go flip off because lack core plan production and poorly executed. Wise word for me, you go better read the manga, not for prohibiting you to watch, but I didn't responsible if you mad or yelling at this animation work.
Well, here's an anime that has caused some contention, but it's easy to see why. Our protagonist is gender-switched into becoming a loli, it's a comedy so much of the humour can be hit or miss, the main character is overpowered (to be fair, all player characters are overpowered) it's a 'trapped in a game' / isekai type What I like about this anime is that it has 'personality' there are a lot of anime that are generic, and don't do enough to try and stand out. This takes it's concepts, it's ideas, understands that they are dumb, but then runs with them. It doesn't try to besmart, it doesn't try to take itself seriously, and as such you can have fun watching this. I will say, if I have one big issue with this, then it's the CGI, I assume it was a cost saving thing to have all the monsters as CG, I mean, there are plenty of places where you can tell it saved it's budget, and that possibly allowed them to lift the overall quality of the series. But the CGI is just outright bad, and it's so predominant in the series. So while the rest of it looks visually appealing and half way decent, the CG stuff just looks like someone has then come in and been sick all over it. Next I want to address the premise of the series, as it does seem to confuse a few people. We have a kid who plays games with his friend (Solomon) who roleplays as a mage, he designed his mage to look as a mage 'should' which is essentially a cross between Merlin and Gandalf, (which is why people seem to be under the impression that he's actually an old man) But that is just the game character he designed, and roleplays as. He was messing around with a cosmetics tool, fell asleep, and now he's a loli. But because he's so used to roleplaying that other character and not being a girl, his behaviours are the way they were before, and he doesn't know how to be a girl. Mira/Dunbalf is overpowered, but so are the other 'former players' it used to be a video game, so all player characters are overpowered compared to NPCs Finally, It's a comedy, so it's supposed to be silly, it's supposed to be dumb, and it's supposed to be over the top. I don't care if it's a good or bad adaptation, I will only judge this as the series presented to me. It's not perfect, it's not without issues, that's why it doesn't get higher than a 7/10, but it is fun, and aside from the bad CGI, it's well made.
So I watched five episodes and wrote this review. Now I've seen all of it and while I at first I thought that writing a review after only seeing five episodes that perhaps it was a bit early to make a review of the series I have retained most of the old one. Why is that, you ask? Well... -- Story & Writing The premise is pretty good and has the quality of being the kind of premise you can do quite a lot with. Not much is actually done with it, however. The writing is cookie cutter and bland with a bunch of the usual tropes. Notenough to be off putting, but also not enough to be engaging. Most of the time we either see characters talking about things that don't really further the plot or build upon relationships in any interesting way or we see the main character using powerful magic and techniques to quickly take out bad guys. Most of what is happening seem more like low level side quests, stuff someone would do when playing a game just to clean up some side quests they missed since the game was patched. And having an OP main character takes away a lot of the suspension and drama, leaving very little stuff left for a good story. Even the main battle at the end is kinda blasé with only a single moment where there is actual danger. It quickly passes though and then the MC just pulls out her ultimate attack and it's over. The premise that the MC has been turned into a girl is really only used for a few very low effort jokes and a handful of near-ecchi scenes. -- Characters & Setting The characters are pretty one-dimensional and forgettable. A lot of the time that should have been spent on developing the story is spent on character interaction, but the relationships don't really seem to evolve or deepen much. I get the feeling that there is a lot of potential in the characters and the world, but so far the show doesn't really use the good things it has going for it. It's as if the creators worked hard on making an interesting world and some template characters and then went to lunch and let the unpaid interns write the rest. Some characters work a bit better, but then again they're side characters that don't get a lot to do. -- Animation & Style Nothing to fault here, but also nothing of note. It's good enough, but nothing to remember. I quickly found myself forgetting about it, with one exception. At times there is some obvious 3D rendering being done and the clash between that style and the usual one is weird. For the most part the visuals are uninspired general fantasy stuff that could be inserted into any generic fantasy anime. It lacks identity, but it's servicable. Some summons and other magic are kinda nice, but that's as far as I'll go. -- Music & Sound Like the animation the sound and music department is also generic and forgettable. The opening and closing themes do what they should, but not one bit more. Not much to add more than that. -- Conclusion Episodes 1-5 could have been shortened down to one, same for episodes 4-10. This is pretty impressive for a show about being in a game where noone actually really develops or grows. The pacing is all over the place and as soon as something seems to become interesting the tension is relieved within a minute. Many scenes are complettely needless as then neither further the story nor build characters very well. This isn't a bad anime by any means, but it fails to make me feel anything and I have the feeling I'll forget about it pretty quickly. If you like isekai anime with an OP main character than this is OK I suppose, but I think you need to be a fan of the genre to really enjoy it. After watching all 12 episodes I have decided I'll keep my rating at "average".
A basically interesting storyline that is poorly executed. The anime begins by not explaining to the viewer what actually happened. In episode 1 he is the Wise Man and towards the end you only see the girl waking up in the grass and making her way ‘back’. One wonders whether he has been transferred into the world? But she doesn't seem to worry about it. There is also no ‘logging out’ and if you are in a VMMORPG, why do you have to sleep, drink/eat or go to the toilet at all. In the same way, the 30-year period raises questions. Is that 30 years rl or ig?What relevance does this time period have and why are the other sages shown as online but are not accessible? - Actually, no interesting questions are really answered. This is rounded off by the faulty animation. There are a few places where there is no animation but only sound. This means that the story continues even though nothing is shown, only to show animations again in the next scene. The categorisation of the enemies is also confusing. In an episode before, our sage single-handedly kills a full demon Rank Graf -3 and in the episode after that, a half-demon is supposed to be a much bigger threat and you want to prevent its ‘awakening’ to a full demon - Okey, weird story -- To summarise, there are worse storylines but the story is not really convincing either. For this reason, the rating shouldn't really surprise you. A sequel is not to be expected, the result of season 1 was not convincing enough for that.
Story (3): "A powerful magician after mysteriously disappearing becomes a cute magician, who is still powerful. Now she has to search for her missing companions all over the world." You see, this sounds like the short description of the anime, but in truth the story revolves around this narrative with vague arguments about what happens or what happened. Don't expect there to be any more plot development than this. Art (8): The design of the world, the characters and in general the visual aspects I liked a lot. Although there will come times when you will think that the plot really does not match thelevel of animation. Sound (7): The voice actors do it well, their roles are understood and the background music conveys the emotion of the situations. Characters (6): I can't say they're memorable or interesting but I can't say they're bad either. It should be noted at least that comedy rescues the personality of some, but makes others simply hateful. From my point of view, there is no development in any main or secondary character, being mostly flat but nice. Enjoyment (5): If you don't like typical isekai, you won't like this anime and although I watched it with a bit of anticipation, it ended up being monotonous. Visually pretty and relatively fun. General (6): The humor of this series is decent, without being anything from another world or having any expectation between chapters other than an "epic battle" that, due to the power of the protagonist, ends in one. Although the aesthetic is beautiful, it falls short of its script and is bland.
The player spent time and resources building one of the most powerful characters, based on his two favorite movie wizards, in a VRMMO that allows users to affect the world. He plays a very venerable and dignified summoner, and stays in character as much as possible. Just to use it before he losses it, he plays with an online vanity box and changes his avatar to a cute little girl. Then he falls asleep before he can change it back. The player wakes up to find he is his character with the new vanity changes and 30 years in the future(giant shock). The "game" is real; she can smell and taste food and even has to pee. Another shock is that the NPCs have developed personalities and complex lives that seem almost indistinguishable from players. She/he is fortunate that she retains the characters original powers and knows how to use them. She even has a few allies that enjoy the gender/age change. The fun part is watching her interact with allies old and new, mostly disguising her true identity. The reactions of people she deals with, and even her own faux pas, are priceless as she makes minor errors not used to being a girl. Or when she utilizes power and knowledge of magic far beyond that people believe a little girl could possibly wield.
I really wanted to like this show, I seriously did, it was however just plain bad. Animation quality was fairly low effort, lots of CG for the monaters and summoned beasts, overall it would be passable if other elements of the show had come together better. The scenerey and background art was often times very awkward and generic. There was never a moment in the show where I thought the art was particularly good. The character design and art were ok, fairly straightforward adaptations from the manga. Mira in particular has a character design that I still really love, though sometimes they would randomly give her adifferent hairstyle that didn't quite work with the design or seeked out of character or out of place. Overall passable but not outstanding. The music and sound design could hqve helped the animation awkwardness a lot, if it had been even decent. The sound design never seemed to match what one would expect from the summonings, amd the music choices and timings left even the high tention moments dull and unexciting. The characters and character development were awkward to non existent. It was never really shown how Mira was close to Solomon and Luminaria, and there were many other characters with implied relationships to Mira that were never developed. The most awkward part of this were many of her summoned creatures with personalities having minimal screentime and no backstory explaining their relationships with Mira. There were also far too many characters who only had an episode or two to be developed and then never really appeared again except briefly. The plot was all over the place too, far too many plot threads that never got developed along with a cimactic finale that came out of nowhere and had no explanation offered. Watching this anime made me wonder wether I had mis remembered the original work in a favorable way, certainly the original also had some of the glaring flaws plot wise, but it still could have been made into a decent show with somw effort. This is not to say that there were no good moments, but the overall incoherence was too much. Like I stated at the begining, this was painful to watch, I had more fun watching Arifureta, which I only started on a lark to laugh at bad Isekai anime. At least Arifureta was fun.
Alot of people said that this series have a bad CGI, generic plot and bad anime adaptation(compared with manga or LN). Frankly speaking I've found myself fell in love with this series. The plot doesn't feel generic to me unlike the other people, it's pretty interesting. Of course the plot is overlap with other anime series such as Log Horizon where the player entered inside the game world and experience the changes happened between the game and reality. The TS part also very appeal to me, of course I don't mind if the MC avatar stays the same but it would've been more pleasing to theeye to see a girl as the MC. Unlike Shoujo Senki, this series shows more fanservice and the plot is not that heavy to consume even though the plot is on a war world scale but it's very lightweight so I always watch it with a breeze. The MC personality is very humble and likeable, she's able to adept to the current world and improve her magic just like how her character suppose to be, a sage that have a great amount in knowledge. The summoned spirits are also very cool and cute especially Leticia and Pam. For the CGI, I see no problem with it, it's not that bad or that good either way. The CGI moves fine but very bad when they are cut so it feels more incomplete rather than bad in general. I don't know other adaptation on this series so I'll be skipping this topic.
If you have seen this studio's track record you will know the quality of this anime from the get go. It's not good. The premise of being in a game, throw it out because it doesn't matter that much anyways. Also throw out the fact the MC changed gender. It's at best a gimmick for 2-3 episodes. Supposedly, the first episode is the most important part of any show because this is the time where you get the most eyes and this anime fails hard at that. It is the worst first episode I've seen. The setup is way too fast, then there's this fight ofone bad CGI army and another bad CGI army then ends with a montage which seems like they ran out of budget. I will say, this gets better as it airs but a ton of people probably have checked out of this after that terrible first impression but it doesn't really reach "good". It's bogged down by the predictable fetch questing. Go to this guy and get something at this location. At least you get to see some okay-ish places. It's not beautiful but it's passable. Aside from the backgrounds, the 3DCG is pretty bad. It just sticks out like a sore thumb. Also, at some scenes, there's a lack of animation where I expect there should be some. I haven't talked about characters. To say the least, they're forgettable. The music is fine but misplaced at times. It ruins the atmosphere of a fight scene (first and last episodes suffer from this). This anime is probably one of the worst of the season with its subpar production values. It could have been decent if these things are fixed. If this is the quality that the studio is capable of, I think they should be relegated to a supporting studio until they get more experience. If you like the world here, you are better off buying the light novel or manga.
Seeing all of these negative reviews, I just want to defend this show a little bit. This won't be a full review, more just a bit of a suggestion for who might want to watch this show. The long story short is that you might as well watch the first episode. There is no need for a 3-episode test on this series. If you actually enjoy the first episode, then I think that guarantees that you'll like the show. If you don't, then I can't predict how much enjoyment you'll eke out of the show, but no point wasting your time on a "maybe", so Isay in that case you should skip this show. Now, with that litmus test out of the way, what can I actually say about the show itself? First off, it is clearly low budget. If you are offended by still frames and CGI, then avoid this series by all means. If you view those as trivial details that don't matter in case of a sufficiently brilliant story, then be warned that this isn't a brilliant story either. It's just a fun little fantasy show. It's a show for if you want to watch adventures, magic, and sorcery. It mostly fits the label of "generic", but "generic" is exactly what I wanted when I watched this show, and it delivered. It's fast-paced, fast enough that some viewers report confusion, but it was clear enough to me. It goes beyond the "generic" label quite often, one of those examples being that litmus test of a first episode that I mentioned. The specific manner in which it deviates is that it tries harder than usual to push the fun "playing a game" side of isekai. There's no melodramatic "the world's at stake" stuff going on here, and quite frequently there are diversions away from any attempt at a dramatic storyline. Fighting against impossible odds isn't something that happens, and such extremes are unbefitting for an anime like this anyways. Anyways, I'll throw in a couple of warnings. First is the preponderance of potty jokes. No idea what the author was thinking, only one of them made me laugh, but realistically speaking they are only a small portion of the series. More bothersome to lots of viewers will be the premise, where an old wizard is reincarnated as a young girl, and sexualized like most young female anime characters. The disconnect seems troubling, but there is a second level where the old wizard is just a character, and presumably the person playing him wasn't also a wise elder. Whether or not it's disturbing depends entirely on who the original player was, which is a subject that the anime doesn't dive into at all. What I enjoyed was a simple fantasy with all the usual tropes, plus a few moments where the tropes were expanded on. Not to beat a dead horse, but one of the best examples is the latter half of the first episode. I'm serious when I say that this will tell you whether or not you like the rest of the series!
There are standouts in every season. Good shows that faithfully adapt their source material or deliver on a concept. On the other hand, there are bad shows, incoherent messes or poor adaptations that blatantly serve as an advertisement for their source material. Then there are shows like Kenja no Deshi wo Nanoru Kenja. Kenja no Deshi wo Nanoru Kenja (I will be referring to it as Double Kenja from now on) is neither a good or a bad show. Rather, it’s one of the many shows that air every season that barely leaves an impression and is forgotten as soon as it finishes airing. That isDouble Kenja’s biggest problem, it is neither good nor bad enough to stand out among an increasingly crowded field of mediocre shows, which makes reviewing it difficult. But one can try. Double Kenja stars Dunbalf, a player within a VRMMO with an old man avatar who is hailed as one of strongest players in the game alongside a group of players known as the Nine Wise Mages. The show properly begins when Dunbalf one day wakes up with a new cute girl avatar, only to discover that thirty years have passed, the VRMMO has somehow become “real” and that the Nine Wise Mages have disappeared. If you were expecting that the show would then explore how a VRMMO suddenly came to life and the psychological impact of thirty years in a game world, you clearly haven’t watched much isekai over the past five years. While Double Kenja technically doesn’t fall into the category of a traditional isekai it shares much of its tone, setting and overall style of the many cookie cutter isekai adaptations over the past five years. That includes the main character hardly caring about the fact that he’s now trapped in another world with no way back to his old life, the main character being overpowered, and a general sense of aimlessness. To give the show some credit, it at least doesn’t waste time engaging in tiresome harem antics like some many others in its genre. At this point I’d talk about what happens in the show itself, but considering I’ve already forgotten most of it, it speaks to how unengaging the whole experience of watching the show was. The overarching plot of the show revolves around Dunbalf, who takes on the name of Mira in her new form and explains her powerful abilities as being the pupil of Dunbalf, being tasked to hunt down the missing members of the Nine Wise Mages in order to ward off a impending threat to the kingdom. What follows are a series of average, forgettable vignettes with a number of side characters who fail to leave any impression. This overall lack of anything interesting happening plot wise is compounded by the mediocre art, animation and music, all of which fail to make up for the show’s plot failings. This show does stand out in having some of the worst CG in recent memory, with stiff models straight out of the early 2000s. Overall, this is a show not worth wasting time on. It’s neither good nor bad enough to stand out or be remembered, and will be destined to join the increasingly large pool of throwaway light novel adaptations that fill out each anime season.
Now before my review, I had no expectations in finishing this anime, I had in mind to drop it after watching the 3rd episode. When watching the first episode I was practically sure that I would drop this anime after not even watching the 3rd episode. Now let's talk about the story that will probably lead to all other important topics, the story is kinda generic in the scene, and you've probably seen this somehow, there's nothing big about the story itself, if you're trying to watch something original, you'll probably dislike it. Somehow I liked the anime, and why?! because of Mira/Dunbalf of course, the wholeanime is suposed to of course focus in one character itself, as it is the main character, I can say that clearly after watching the anime (I might be wrong, but that's what they actually mostly showed in the whole anime). Focusing in one character, making her very cute, which I can see they did pretty well about that, the key animation was great, now let's just not talk about the CGI there, which was kinda meh, and I personally dislike CGI in most of the cases. Now if I would summary this anime, it's everything focusing in Mira's adventures while she's doing quests, at the end stuff happens, but that just as a generic plot does to just do the big battle and 'happy end" or somewhat. Now if you like some of these topics, you probably will be interested in at least watching it until the end: Very cute main character, which changes clothes a lot, and each one clothes is very cute tho. The main character is very powerful and of course mostly surprise people after showing its true power (mostly people are doubt about its power due to the main character be a "little girl"). For me at least was kinda fun to watch Mira's adventures, and meeting new people, and getting along with them. The animation is good, the CGI is kinda not good in my opinion, but I dislike CGI so you may like it who knows. Mira's seiyuu did a great job in her voice, I was surprised after I found out she didn't voiced more characters. Now this is it, I kinda have a unpopular opinion here since everyone seems to dislike it, but as I said before I started watching it I had sure I was gonna drop it.
