The gods of the world—from Greek to Norse to Hindu mythology—gather every one thousand years to make one important decision: whether or not to wipe out mankind. Repulsed by humanity's selfishness, the council unanimously votes to destroy all humans. But before the decree is enacted, Brunhilde, one of the 13 Valkyries of Valhalla, interrupts the meeting to give mankind a chance at survival. Brunhilde proposes the idea of enacting Ragnarök, an event in which the strongest 13 mortal warriors fight against 13 gods in one-on-one matches. Although the trial is ridiculed by the gods, the demigod takes advantage of their pride and forces them into an agreement. However, Brunhilde herself must recruit the mightiest heroes throughout humanity's thousand-year history and guide them to victory before they meet their untimely demise. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

I have read the manga previously so already had some expecations for what an extreme action type of show this could become. What i saw was the same powerpoint presentation as Promised Neverland s2 or House Husband. The fights where beyond subpar which was unexpected for, as i said, a literal FIGHTING ANIME. The backstories of the characters are kinda fun but shouldnt have even been the main focus of the show. I want to disregard it but they literally made it like 80% of an episode. the other 20% are 10 fps GIFs they stuck together. Overall this is a 2 because your main experienceand excitement has been robbed for ez netflix cash grab
No spoiler review! This is my first review so don't get mad at me. I think people hype this anime so much to the point where it didn't matter if it was good or bad, people will still be disappointed. In my opinion, it is a very good anime, I usually don't like slow-paced fights but for some reason, this anime did it so well that I enjoyed it and wanted to see more about each character. Also, I love the interactions between the characters fighting and how each fight is full of emotions, and the soundtracks perfectly match with what you’re watching. I really love that thisshow takes the time to tell you a bit about each character, so you can empathize with them and is not just a God and human fighting. I find it fantastic that each fight has a plot weight since humanity is fighting to survive. That made me enjoy every fight and because of that, the outcome of each fight is crucial so you don’t get bored. The story is good, the art is great, the sound is fantastic, the characters are my favorite thing from the show (especially Adam), and it is pretty enjoyable. 8.9/10 If you like well-written characters, good animation, nice fights, and awesome soundtracks. I encourage you to watch "Record of Ragnarok".
[No Spoilers] If I'm going to be honest... I'm disappointed. I heard quite a few good things about this manga before the anime came out and now I doubt manga readers will be happy with the quality of this anime. This anime simply doesn't hold up to others like Baki or Kengen Ashura which fill the same category but remain better in everyway, now lets get into why. (1/10 scale) Story: 4 The story of Record of Ragnarok is not very deep at all. The story is about 13 Valkyries and 13 of histories strongest humans teaming up to beat the gods in a tournament to savehumanity. The story is basic but since most fighting anime like this have basic stories I gave its a higher score then it would get otherwise. Art: 3 It looks like a slideshow... The actual characters and certain moments look pretty cool but overall the animation is sloppy and trash, giving it a 3 for art. Sound: 3 Nothing stood out to me. The punches didn't have a lot of sound and the impact was lackluster. Only gets a 3 because a lot of anime do this poorly. Character: 2 Awful. After watching the first 12 episodes none of the characters left an impact. All the characters treat this massive death battle like a chill game of football or they comedically overreact, only 1 character showed real emotion and it lasted for no more then 10 seconds before going back to normal. Easily the worst part of this show for me. Enjoyment: 3.5 A more reasonable rating would be a 2-3 but I'll give it a 3.5 since I watched all of it and it passed the time. I only watched it since I just came out and I only finished it by skipping past a lot of flashbacks and through some episodes. I will forget about it in a week. Overall: 3 Should you watch it? No. The only person I would recommend this to is someone whos favorite anime is Baki, and I still worry it might be a waste of time. Record of Ragnarok is easily the most disappointing anime for me this season. Shame.
It's an anime made to show incredible fights. Its story is different, although it doesn't present any kind of complexity, it's direct and it does what it promises. The art and animation are decent, although they slack from time to time, it also has moments where they get amazing. As far as sound is concerned, it's very good, a fantastic opening and the atmosphere that is achieved in certain scenes is of a high level. The characters are interesting and endearing, since they start from existing characters and make small changes to them can achieve a great construction, although, of course, they lack originality. Adamis by far the best character it has, the philosophy he has is very well represented, and he is, even without being created from scratch, a very unique and particular character. It's enjoyable depending on what you expect to see, the constant flashbacks and some scenes cut the continuity of the fight, so it can often be tedious to watch. In general, it is an anime that is not surprising, although it's at the level of any average anime, I consider that it didn't measure up to the manga. I expected the fights to be a visual delight but it was certainly disappointing.
It's now 2022 and while many things change, my shitty anime taste apparently remains the same. I am honestly baffled why so many people have this on their lists for worst anime of 2021. It's honest to God not that bad. I was consistently entertained for 12 episodes and binged the entire show in 2 days. Record of Ragnarok takes place in a world in which all the gods of all the various mythologies are real and Zeus from Greek mythology is the father of all gods and is also the God from the Abrahamic religions. The gods decide that humanity needs to be wiped outbecause the gods are capricious assholes, which is certainly accurate to Greek mythology. However, a Valkyrie from Norse mythology says that mankind should be given a fighting chance and arranges a tournament in which 13 gods fight against 13 of the strongest humans chosen from throughout history. Whoever reaches 7 wins first is declared the winner and if humanity wins then they get to live another 1000 years. The plot is inspired by classic shonen tournament arcs and this show is filled to the brim with big dumb macho moments and "so stupid it's awesome" bullshit. It definitely takes a lot of inspiration from Baki, early Jojo, and Fist of the North Star. However, it also takes inspiration from rage fueled geek arguments online about which god would beat which in a fight. So, Ragnarök is basically like Baki the Grappler meets the Youtube show Death Battle. Allow me to give you an example of how stupid this show is. The second fight is a boxing match between Adam from the Old Testament and Zeus! Zeus hulks out and then decides to use Za Warudo for...some reason. However, Adam catches him with the cross counter from Ashita no Joe while wearing a brass knuckle made from the soul of a valkyrie. Everyone thinks Zeus is dead, but then he pops back up and says "This isn't even my final form!" Then he grows weird facial hair so he looks like Dr Eggman/Robotnik for absolutely no reason. That's the kind of anime we're dealing with. The sad part is that despite how unbelievably stupid this anime is, it would have a Godlike MAL rating if the manga readers got their wish and it had been adapted by Madhouse or Ufotable. If everything was the same and it looked just slightly better, the series would get positive ratings and then the same whiners in the Gogoanime comments saying "This is so stupid! Why is Adam boxing Zeus?!" would either mysteriously shut up or start defending the show as secretly brilliant. After all, if a show has good ratings then it MUST be good right? I will fully admit that the CGI doesn't look that great and can look really janky at times. However, to an animation purist like me who hates CGI anime anyways, this doesn't look THAT much worse than Beastars or Houseki no Kuni to me. Ragnarok and Houseki certainly look a lot closer to each other than either look to Gunsmith Cats. What Ragnarok really reminds me of though is Netflix Baki, which makes sense since this is indeed a Netflix anime. I've covered the fact the animation is kind of bad, but another reason people complained is the pacing. The fights all take 4 episodes and there are flashbacks! So what? That's what shonen anime used to be like! Not everything has to be Demon Slayer and have every fight be 15 minutes of non-stop sakuga. My first anime was DBZ, where Goku fights Freeza for 19 straight episodes! The previous 8 episodes were the rest of the cast fighting Freeza. So, they spend 27 consecutive episodes fighting this one bad guy and nothing else. Every single one of those episodes is pretty poorly animated and filled to the brim with still shots and filler dialogue, so only a few impressive blows land each episode. There are constant scaling errors where Freeza's height is never consistent. They forget half the time that Freeza fully regenerated his tail in is final form and he'll have his stubby tail again at random intervals. At one point, Krillin flies into the air while wearing his Saiyan battle armor and then he just poofs directly into his red turtle school gi, because one animation team went to lunch and the director forgot to tell the new animators what they were drawing. NONE of that mattered! We still thought DBZ was cool as shit because it had 1 or 2 super hype moments each episode and that's what Ragnarok delivers! I know I'm going full "old man" but how spoiled are younger fans when they complain about a 4 episode fight with limited animation and a couple flashbacks? It's as if people are so butthurt this didn't get a Madhouse adaptation that now they're complaining that a shonen fighting anime is a shonen fighting anime. The last reason people hate this anime is because it offended a lot of people. Why is that a bad thing? Mushoku offending the shit out of SJWs is legitimately half the reason for its popularity. While Moshuku actually made a brilliant strategic move in today's divided political climate, Ragnarok is a stupid show made by idiots. So of course, they offended the wrong people. Ragnarok for some reason absolutely shits on the Hindu pantheon and presents them as younger, sub-servient gods to the Greek pantheon. This is REALLY stupid for a number of reasons. Firstly, the Gods of the Vedas are the oldest recorded versions of the gods spread by Indo-European speaking peoples. While the oldest recorded evidence of Zeus dates to 800 BC, his Hindu counterpart Indra is over 700 years older. Zeus is basically just a rip-off of Indra who also for some reason happens to be a rapist and really into golden showers and swan sex. Secondly, Hinduism is an actual living religion practiced seriously by hundreds of millions of people. Nobody is still worshipping Zeus! Lastly, South Asian anime fans by 2025 will outnumber both Japanese anime fans and white anime fans. The only thing dumber than randomly insulting all the Indian fans, would be to insult the Chinese market and make the Chinese hero Lu Bu into a complete jobber who lands 1 blow before getting buried. Then immediately follow that up by having a C tier Japanese hero who gaijin haven't even heard of easily whoop his god opponent's ass. That's of course exactly what Ragnarok does...because this is a stupid show made by fucking idiots. I can understand people getting a little offended by Ragnarok, but to get too offended you have to take it seriously. I'm sure somebody got offended by Adam and Eve, stated in Ragnarok to be the ancestors of all Mankind, having blonde hair and blue eyes. After all, blue eyes are a very recent mutation dating back only 7,000 years while modern humans are 300,000 years old. Then you remember, Adam is fighting Zeus in a boxing match using magical knuckle dusters. This anime is WAY too stupid to get offended by. Should you watch Ragnarok? Hell yes! I lost count of the amount of times I either laughed my ass off or pumped my fist in excitement. This was an absolute blast for 12 idiotic episodes! Next year it's coming back and Hercules is fighting Jack the Ripper. You read that last sentence correctly. That's actually going to happen and I'm going to watch it the day it drops!
When AOT came out with horrid titan animation everyone said "it's fine because it's mappa" but when another studio comes out with something that isn't even bad and definitely stands above average it's going to be thrown into garbage can. I'm really feed up with current anime industry and what they produce but Shuumatsu no Walküre is a really good anime, watched it all at once and had fun watching it and all i can hope for is second season to see Jack the Ripper fight. There's just no more than that, watch it and don't forget that this anime is entirely a tournament arc.
Yeah, in all humanity history there is only chinese and japanese warriors. Very logical. The stories of characters were not good. And there is not even a proper fighting animation. I felt like watching a slideshow. When they're fighting they just show the spectators. Character appearances are very bad. Maybe there should be comedy in genres. I don't recommend this anime. It's just a waste of time. I was expecting more from this. I didn't read manga but i think it is definitely better than anime. I'm very disappointed. I think netflix shouldn't make an anime. They're just using a bad CGI or making bad animations.
Speaking from the perspective of someone who's been following AND loving the manga, this anime is a pathetic excuse of an adaptation. The pacing of the story is awful, it goes too slow, spending too much screentime on the reactions and comments of less important and sometimes irrelevant side characters. I suppose the studio did so in the hopes that showing their reactions could somewhat build the tension of the anime till the climaxes of the fights. In vain, of course. Their handling of the tension is shoddy since it all falls to nothing when the anime watchers patiently sit through boring side commentary, backstoriesand empty characters to be insulted with the most laziest fight scenes I have ever seen. How bout we just watch a powerpoint presentation? I'm willing to bet some talented Youtuber out there could do a better job with a fan animation. There was absolutely no impact felt when I watched the fight scenes. This was lazy work by the studio behind the anime. Honestly, with this amazing cast with top notch voice actors, this anime is an absolute waste. All in all, a complete letdown. Side note: read the manga. It's honestly good, and the fight scenes are clear cut, fast-paced and action-packed. Unlike this sorry adaptation.
very disappointed in this i had high expectations for this anime but they all crumbled down, so why do i find this anime disappointing? first of the animation in this show very poor, there is hardly any animation used in this show, just still images, with shaky cam effect to make it look like there is a semblance of animation, now i'm not the type of person who thinks an anime is bad just because it lacked animation, but for a fighting anime like this, i really would have liked better animation than what we got speaking of animations lets talk about theartstyle, for its lack of animations i will say the art style is very good for the most part, it is very detailed which does make it harder to animate the sound of this show is also very good, but they do tend to repeat the same tracks over and over a little too much i must say though the voice actors did a very good job, they where probably the best thing about this anime, the pacing of this show is really bad, the show is supposed to be non stop action but its constantly interrupted by on lookers, explaining to us the minute of details, its supposed to be show and don't tell, but this anime just shoves the entire dictionary down your throat when ever a character makes a single move i highly suggest you read the manga because this anime doesn't really do it justice, the manga is absolutely amazing, it had better animation
Never have I witnessed something that sets out with a single-minded focus on one thing and fails so utterly spectacularly at it. The only purpose of this story is to show off cool fights. This fighting anime has some of the most boring and uninteresting fights I have ever seen in an anime. You also get the feeling they tried to rip off the Marvel comedy trope that has been very popular in media lately. However it is often simply awkward, out of place, and ruins the atmosphere of the scene. Many characters are repeatedly built up and the show tries to make you care forthem only to then give them to most pathetic, undeserved, and lazy deaths. Do not waste your time with this trash.
Before reading this, know that this opinion is coming from somebody who has read the manga, and I believe that my opinion will vastly differ from someone who has never read the manga. This is probably the most disappointing anime I have seen this year. The biggest problem with this anime is that the manga was too good, to the point where I had unreasonably high expectations. Story: 3/10 Overall, the story follows that of the manga. However, the pacing was an issue, some of the iconic scenes in the manga didn't make it into the anime. Instead, focus on that annoying little valkyrie panicking over everylittle thing took priority even though it was clearly unnecessary. The same for the guy sounding the horn, nobody gives a shit about him. Gets a bit boring seeing predictable reactions after a while. In the manga, it was a counstant fight -> flashback -> counter -> flashback -> counter...but in the anime there were so many annoying little interruptions that the tension/energy of the show is just gone. Flashbacks of the fights were also dragged out slightly longer than necessary whereas the actual fight scenes were erased and felt like they were over slightly quicker than in the manga. Art: 1/10 This is one of my biggest frustrations. The manga had amazing, beautiful art. For example Lu Bu vs Thor final clash, the anime just didn't do the manga justice. Plenty of the fights had this weird powerpoint-type "animation" where it's just feels like stop-motion of a bunch of images. It was terrible. Especially for an action scene. For example the part where Thor was doing the spin after catching the hammer he's thrown, the anime had to show that spin in two different cuts (of two half-spins) whereas normally it should be expected that he does an entire spin. What the hell was that? Sometimes the character's voice can be heard and their faces are right in front of the viewers, but the mouth does not move. The finale of the fight between Zeus and Adam, most of it was just spectator reactions because for some reason they couldn't put in any fighting animations. Even the few exchange of blows were just a volley of animated colored-strikes instead of their actual arms/fists. Just read the manga and see for yourself, how the "animation" did it dirty. Words cannot describe how atrocious this "animation" is. Absolutely unacceptable. To put it into perspective, remember seven deadly sins, escanor vs meliodas fight, and how everyone agreed that the animation was kinda bad? This is worse. Way worse. Sound: 5/10 This is probably the only redeeming factor of this anime. The soundtracks are decent enough, and the voice acting is good. Nothing stands out, but nothing to complain about either. This is the one thing where perhaps I can overlook since the manga has no sounds for me to compare it to in the first place. I don't have much to say. Character: 5/10 Again, over-exaggeration of reactions of minor characters and onlookers. Instead, some of the more iconic scenes which portrays certain characters attitude towards the showdown are missing. For example, in the manga Zeus the old man was showing off his arrogance by strangling his pet dragon in front of the crowd when announcing the fight, this part was removed from the anime even though would have explained quite a lot. Or the scene where Loki approaches Heracles when he was going up the stairs and he explains that he is actually against ending mankind, and will always be an ally to justice. These are important character developments, especially for one of the fighters. It should not be left out and it should not just jump straight to the fight. But because that fight was left as a cliffhanger, I will give them the benefit of the doubt that they will cover that next season. Though for that to happen, some episode recap will have to be done, which is already annoying enough as is in this season. Still, most of the first 3 main characters were displayed good enough, but I just felt like more could have been done. Enjoyment: 4/10 Not enjoyable at all. It was quite a letdown. Completely destroyed my expectations of how good the anime could have been. Partially due to the manga. Overall: 2/10 Please just read the manga. I do not even recommend watching this anime. You will get way better art, more coherent story, better pacing, better understanding of the characters, and overall just a more pleasant time.
I've watched the anime record of ragnarok 50 times on netflix, in my opinion this anime is good but not very good. Firstly, the story is anti-mainstream, where this anime tells a story about Gods fighting humans. Every 1000 years the Gods of each pantheon hold a conference to decide the fate of humanity. where in a conference the gods unanimously decided that humanity should be ended or destroyed. but at the last second before the verdict was approved, a Valkyrie intervened and put forward a bold proposal to let humans determine their fate by letting them fight the gods in a series of one-on-onebattles to see if they deserved to continue to exist, called ragnarok. Ragnarok is humanity's final struggle against the gods. The incident is described in paragraph 15 of article no. 62 in the Valhalla Constitution's Super Special Clause. This is a one-on-one battle between the gods and humanity. Afraid of losing their pride, the gods accepted this proposal. Thirteen gods would fight against thirteen human champions. The first side to achieve seven wins will determine the fate of humanity. The story is very interesting for many people including me so this anime story is very good. Second, regarding animation, we know that this anime is made by Netflix, which means that Netflix's reputation regarding the anime they make is quite bad. I know there are several anime made by Netflix that are good, but it cannot be denied that there are also bad ones, one of which is the anime Record of Ragnarok. The animation for Record of Ragnarok is very bad, like the animation using Power Point, this is very visible in the part of the god Zeus fighting Adam. This part makes my eyes hurt, even though Zeus and Adam's fight is the thing that many people, including me, are most looking forward to animating. In conclusion, this anime animation is bad. thirdly regarding characters, the characters in the anime Record of Ragnarok are very good, although there are many controversial ones, one of which is the character of Lord Shiva which does not match the mythology which made the Indian government ban the broadcast of the anime Record of Ragnarok in India. fourthly, regarding the soundtrack, I don't have much to say about the soundtrack in this anime, because the soundtrack in this anime is very good. You can hear it on YouTube where it is so popular that the Zues Entrance soundtrack and Shiva theme soundtrack reach millions of viewers.
Wow. This show is shite. I'm sorry. It's really really poor. I also want to make this clear too, though I will not post the review until I have finished it, I started writing it 5 minutes into episode 4 and finished it by the end. It is complete trash and will explain why Story is all sorts of crap. Zeus and Odin, in the same story?! Who the f**k did the research for this. Shiva? F**king Shiva?! The introduction to the story starts abruptly, sadly, it doesn't finish as such. Within minutes, with no context, a tournament starts between Gods and Mortals. Despite itsabrupt introduction, this should be great. Guess what though, you never will so I'll tell you, it's not good at all. It's cheesy but not in a funny way, it's dramatic but not in an exciting way and is essentially everything that anime gets the piss taken out of for. The narrator is also dog shit. Makes me long to hear Dimple's voice just so I don't end it all whenever he chirps in. Now then, animation. Imagine JoJo, but it's shit, not funny and misses the mark with everything it tries. Once you've done that, you have something that is a little better than Record of Ragnarok. That's pretty much it to be honest. Character design is really awful. Everything about it is awful. How they interact, how they look, awful. The fight sequences are also very stale however!, they do contain the animations only redeeming feature. When the action is 'super super intense', it chooses a hand drawn style that is hard not to like. Music, basic and uninteresting. Sadly nothing else to say. Incase you haven't sensed this yet, wouldn't recommend. Probably needs throwing into the ocean if I'm to be honest. ....Sorry, as I write, Adam.....ADAM! has just stepped on the arena floor for the humans with OF COURSE no frigging clothes on cheered on by Michael Angelo and Mozart in the crowd..... I'm done, this review is getting posted. F**king bullshit show
The anime is a slight disappointment. Then again it was done dirty for a quick cash grab by NETFLIX so yeah. To be fair, for the most part this anime holds true to the manga. The story, characters and generally events are the same. The only real problem was the animation. Record of Ragnarok being a fighting manga and anime deserved to at least have top tier fights but sadly it didn't. Why? I don't know. Even then I still managed to get hyped and look past that flaw. Thor vs Lu Bu was a solid 7/10, a bit lower than the manga but nottoo bad. Adam vs Zeus in the manga was pure perfection and 10/10 so sadly it fell down to about a 7.5/10. And honestly, the best fight so far was Poseidon vs Sasaki Kojiro which I rate as a 8/10. Not everything in this anime was just "mid" though. The music itself was amazing and easily a 10/10. The characters were really funny and enjoyable which is a solid 9/10. So overall even though animation was kind of bad I don't think this anime is as bad as others make it out to be. In the end I give it 7.5/10. I hope the ones who made this anime learn from their mistake and give it justice in season 2, if it happens.
No spoilers review I see a lot of people rating this anime with a 2/3. I mean, they are right in some point: this anime is not a masterpiece or something like that. However its one that its very enjoyable. The character building sometimes is not the best but you can really get excited with the storys of Adan and Kojiro. I know I did. Mostly with Kojiro, who, in my opnion, had the best fight so far in the anime. The animation is not bad at all for me but its not something like the demon slayer movie or Attack on Titan. I mean ¿you reallyexpect something like that here? Making animations like that are expensive as hell. A lot of people complained about it saying thay the animation is really basic and low. I would give it a 7 for it. Its not as bad as the Nanatsu no Taizai but its not something like AOT. Still, is NOT A BAD ANIMATION PEOPLE. I really liked this anime and I hope it gets a second season. People should relax a bit while making reviews
[ NON SPOILER REVIEW] Wouldn't recommend this anime to anyone tbh even if you are going to binge watch it like i did. So why is it that bad : The character design and animations are kinda whack the animation is not consistent but not horrible. Story was alright could've been more exciting if the pacing was better honestly and maybe replaced the last two fights with something else i felt they were poorI couldn't care less for most characters :( except for Aphrodite because you know :) XD but even her was kinda disappointing somehow !!!!! The fighting in this anime overall is disappointing to say the least it started off good but literally after the first fight it went downhill for me specially since i had high expectations in the second fight but was disappointed beyond belief and because the anime was only 12 episodes ofc it didn't contain all the matches ....... so the anime needed to be longer idk if there is a part 2 but i hope there isn't Overall the anime lacked excitement and creativity for mostly the second half of the anime (after the first two fights) ! and for its positives cool first fight and interesting participant list for the human side but the interest faded because most of the exciting names didn't fight but yeah idk about this one i thought it was disappointing and just poor.
Lest get straight to the point the show is totally mediocre. I am not a fan of history and i find it Dreary, but still i like to watch anime related to history as it puts a entertaining aspect to it. I have seen and read both anime and manga which is related to history and religion but this is the first one which was able to put me to sleep with the very first episode. It was like i was back in the stupid history classes in school. The starting was boring as hell, not enough backstory to the characters, the narration is dulland the animation is less than decent, only at certain times it can be called good. In the middle of the the series they try to go into the backstory a bit more but still too less details but the fight sequence was much better and in the final part they did a good job with one part of the back story but the did not put any effort to the other and the fight was boring. The music is not original I have heard similar soundtracks in several other anime (but most animators reuse same material repeatedly so no use crying about that). For crying out loud the humans are fighting gods, the battles should be more destructive. Its just another anime with a martial arts tournament. The only thing good about it was the effort the voice actors put into it. To conclude, this is another superhuman martial-art tournament anime lacking originality. I had high hopes for this anime after the trailer was released but it was a total waste of time.
Record of Ragnarok Recap: The gods have decided to eradicate the human race at a gods conference and the majority decision is in favor; However, a demigod/Valkyrie steps in and offers an alternative method to test humanity. Ragnarok is a tournament between humans and gods where 13 of the most powerful humans fight against 13 of the most powerful gods where the faction that reaches 7 victories wins the bout. If the humans win, humanity will not be eradicated but if the gods win humanity will cease to exist. This is a last effort approach to save humanity from its downfall; Will humanity prevail or willthey lose in the process? Story & Characters: 4/10 The story is really basic and doesn't need any in depth theatrical analysis; Humanity is at a point of no return as they are thrusted in a deathmatch against gods. The idea isn't new and has been done before without the gods faction - In essence the plot is a tournament style storyline which uses suspense to drive the direction of the story. However, in my experience with the show I think they tried really hard to make every fight suspenseful - From ways such as flashbacks, cliffhanger episodes, special moves, not using their full powers etc. the story makes an effort to reuse however many features it has to keep the story suspenseful. It fails miserably because the format is so similar it gets repetitive after the first few battles and especially considering the battles are dragged out to accommodate all the suspense. The characters play into suspense and story direction; We see that the candidates of Ragnarok typically have an entourage of comrades that support them and usually have a long history with the candidate but in the end they are all superficially developed to be disposable which is seen after Lu Bu fights Thor or Adam fights Zeus. A lot of spectating god characters that get focused on also feel forcefully developed with them being involved with other god candidate backstories. The main downside of this show is how all these characters are used to give reaction facial expressions when something unexpected occurs during a battle; It's so overused that I feel 15-20 minutes out of 12 episodes are purely reaction shots. One of these aspects aren't bad on their own but when they all combine like in this show, it drags the entertainment and relevance of the show through the mud which is what I experienced watching. Art & Sound: 5/10 Never have I seen a series dedicated to pure manly fighting have no fighitng animation whatsoever. The entire show is full of panning slideshows of candidates moving forward and rarely any back to back fluid motion. If there is any, it's usually in CGI which doesn't make much sense considering the amount is like 1 minute of each episode. That and the fact that the art and colors didn't match up with a style feeling arbitrarily drawn ruined my visual experience of the show. The sound is subpar also, no suspenseful music that added a theme to the show and the character dialogue were obnoxious especially the Valkyrie assistant. Most of the reaction shots also had no dialogue and were filled with gasps or just swoosh sound effects which were really poorly planned out. Overall & Enjoyment: 4/10 This series went from a 6 in episode 1, to a 5 at episode 5 to a 4 at episode 12. I did enjoy a few aspects like Adam and Zeus fighting but the rest felt really repetitive and uninteresting. It took a while to finally pick this up again and I can safely say that this has got to be the most boring anime made in 2021. I've heard that this was meant to be a highly anticipated show considering the intense manga coverage but I think the budget was unreasonably low for this to flop as expected with Netlflix funded series.
Best word to describe this anime? Overhyped Second best word to describe this anime? painful (as in painful to watch) SPOILER WARNING Saw this on a op mc anime list youtube video I was watching. They said it wasn't really an op mc anime but it was about the op mc's of history. Arguably total BS. Like somehow Adam from adam and eve being some kind of super badass that can fight zeus (the supreme god of gods in this anime) on equal footing right up unto the very end where he knocks zeus on his ass and basically hospitalizes him while he's been long dead. Kinda op zombielike crap. They didn't really devote much time to the show in the video but I decided to give it a watch. NOT. WORTH. IT. I finished this anime just because the person who made the video said that the poseidon fight was supposed to be super badass. Definitely not, definitely extremely disappointing as a whole including the poseidon fight. Poseidon not only gets fileted easily at the end, he doesn't use any sort of aquatic power or anything like that literally AT ALL despite having the arena adjusted to be like 80% water. There was NO excuse for him to just get fileted without even throwing in like a wave nearly drowning the dude or some shark riding craziness or whatever. The same with zeus. The dudes are the god of lightning and god of the sea or whatever. Something like that, and yet you saw 0 water and 0 lightning powers. I'm not sure how it has a 6.6 on MAL but that just seems utterly ridiculous to me.
