Delinquent Juu Juuzawa is a lone wolf who does not see much use in befriending people. So when a girl named Ame Ochibana claims they are linked together from their previous lives, he is highly skeptical and doesn't want anything to do with her. Even stranger is that her fondest wish is to be his servant. Thinking that Ame must be delusional, he tries to distance himself from her. But when a classmate is murdered, Juu instead decides to keep her close, believing the strange girl to be the culprit. However, her intelligence and skill begin to prove invaluable as the two begin working together to solve the murder. Denpa-teki na Kanojo weaves together a story of love, loss, and devotion, showing that allies can be found in the most unlikely of places. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Let me start off by first saying this OVA should've been a full series, Watching this anime made me realize why I first started watching anime in the first place. Maybe it's just me but the ever repeating cycle of School based animes with boring leads and stereotypical archetype females became quite dull; that being said Denpa Teki na Kanojo is a breath of fresh air that left me hungering for more. In my eyes their are several reasons why i will watch an anime through and through -A. Well written story with no plot holes, B. Great Cast of characters that you reallylike and C. Great Director and Staff who have proven themselves before. This anime has all 3, but the biggest reason I believe this anime succeeds is the characters. Juuzawa made this anime for me, I loved his character (then again i like delinquents and/or characters that don't give a crap) FINALLY! I MEAN FINALLY! a character in a school setting anime that isn't a pushover that does anything the girls tell him to do. Ochibana complemented Juuzawa perfectly, The reasoning for her attachment to him is a bit quaint but truth be told that doesn't matter. Im not gonna mention parts of the story because this is a 2 episode OVA, any mentioning of the story for an OVA this short feels like a spoiler. Director Kanbe, Mamoru did a great job with this one, the voice actors match all the characters spot on, and the dark yet upbeat feel of this anime makes for a great watch. It's a shame that an anime as good as this couldn't get a full season considering the crap that Japan spews out. I would've given it a perfect 10 but considering how short the OVA is I can only give it a 9
I came into this after reading all the good reviews and high MAL score so i thought this would be a good anime to watch with my friends. I was right but so wrong and we had some of the best laughs yet. Character motivations are ambiguous at best with our two protagonists putting themselves on the line in unrealistic and unreasonable circumstances. We get to know next to nothing about out generic yandere clingy female and ambitiousless male lead. We get to feel nothing for the charecters who are lost in the hopless edgyness of this anime. Now, there is no problem with edginess. Elfen Lied,Higurashi or Shingeki do it well, but this is because they set up a convincing scenario where the gore is justifiable to the message. Denpa Teki makes it just seem so crass and immature. This is in part due to how one dimensional all the charecters are, but also due to how weak the stories are and convoluted the stories are. Seriously, how can anyone not laugh at the end of OVA 1. it's as if the writter came along and said "we aren't quite being crazy enough so let's just do a complete as pull in the name of gore". Or how about the shear stupidity of the end of OVA 2. What about the constant spoon feeding? I could honestly put these charecters and story on a Mars of Destruction Tier. The only saving grace is the art which is well done, but overemphasizing on things which have no value to the plot such as the reacuring statue in OVA 1. You guys wonder why it wasn't a full anime... well it's obvious to if you look hard enough.
Throw some nice ambient, some great op/ed themes, very nice art, an interesting and somewhat original story, mix them together... It usually doesn't always end up well. Because integrity is needed. Well, this anime, two episodes OVA, has very nice sounds and ambiance music, touching ed themes, an art that is catchy (even by today's standards) and a story that is very, very intriguing. Firstly, it is not a shounen where high school kids go for their so-called romance. It is not an 'bleeding-edge' science-fiction either. It is something that can, though unlikely, happen in daily life. This makes it better, because characters are not so deep withsome great resolve or aim, which would make them shallow otherwise. However, they fit in, they feel real. Therefore, it has integrity. Secondly, although the story is not a masterpiece, it is not a usual slice of life either. The way it is presented, yes, looks and feels like a slice of life, but the core is not. I would think it would dissolve integrity and introduce plot holes, but it is quite the contrary. Starting with serial killers just like Mirai Nikki, it resolves rather modest and satisfying. Not a sharp taste, a soft taste indeed. Talking more about it will spoil, so I will just stop here. Finally, the art deserves an applause. Animations are great, scenery is great, facial expressions are particularly great. It is not stylistic, which makes it better for the overall presentation. Voice acting, on the other hand, could be a little better. Maybe they should've seen the facial expressions first, then voice it, but still, not an earsore. I rate the sound 10 because it is not overwhelming. You do not realize it's there until you pay attention (developer ear here) and it just drags you into immersion. Overall, don't waste your time with moe and shounen; watch this, enjoy, and up your standards. 2 episodes will be enough to feel satisfied. That's what makes this a gem.
If you are a fan of things like deeper character development, rational thinking, realistic characters and mystery watch something else. Denpa Teki na Kanojo tries to be a showcase of crazy people, but achieves barely anything else ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Cons *Denpa Teki na Kanojo tries very hard to make it's characters seem insane, but doesn't give them a proper buildup which leads to their condition feeling forced. *It is filled with spontaneous plot developments that ruin the atmosphere (i.e. pulling information out of seemingly thin air or conveniently running into a corpse.) *The characters are often plagued with a lack of common sense abnormal even for the horror genera.* The mystery was weak, it was too predictable at times and too unpredictable at others (can't explain more without spoilers) * Tries to be episodic, but with only 2 episodes it feels lacking. Pros *Lots of crazy characters ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The art and sound were average. Nothing special but nothing bad either. If you want to watch an anime about crazy people give this a shot, but don't expect anything else.
I just happen to have stumbled upon this beautiful 2 episode OVA to waste a well deserved 2.5 hrs, I'm glad I found this! First off let me say this isn't your typical anime show and should have been a series or at least I hope they do so in the near future. I like how the story started, then meeting this freakish dark aura looking girl who happens to follow the protagonist around saying he and she are bonded for generations in the previous life(weirdo right?) oh did I mention their insane killings, murders, character change, huge unexpected turns? Wait!! wait!!! you'll have towatch it for yourself. I'm sure you'll enjoy it ... Just my two cents
This is a spoiler free review. Story-10 Since the show only has 2 double episodes i really thought that pacing would be bad here, it was sooo not! Edge of the seat story that will have you guessing. This is a really good thriller. Art-8 Doesn't really have that gloss of a high budget anime. It looks almost great but just lacking in areas, still very good art work and animation is superb. Sound-9Cant complain. Sets the tone very nicely for the atmosphere of this anime. Character-10 I loved the characters, the main characters have enough depth and comedic moments, they are such opposites so they have unique reasons as to why they are great. Enjoyment-10 I love murder mystery's and thrillers. And this anime is all about that. Overall-9 When I put the first episode on I wasn't expecting much but it really took me for a ride. The show was compelling from start to finish. The major disappointment i have is that it wasn't longer!(being anal) But don't worry, the pacing is very good that i just want more, I think the length is great for the show really and no complaints for me. If you like Murder Mysteries or anything with nice characters and story; really check this out!
As it was stated in another review; this Anime/Ova showed me why I originally loved to watch Anime/Ova's. The most common Anime you will watch is usually a different story with a cliche ending, although I still enjoy these Anime's; it feels as if I am watching the same Anime with different characters. Denpa Teki Na Kanojo gives you that thrill you would want in an Anime; once you think you've figured out the ending, there will be a twist that you didn't expect.
Story: 10/10 The story is outstanding for a two episode OVA. The storyline and the *SPOILERideaofhappypointsSPOILER* are original. The pacing was great, the plot wasn't given away too much at the beginning nor the end. Information and the plot were given away bit by bit along the two episodes. I especially liked the effects in the anime. For example, when the image of the very same statue pops up at regular intervals. Another example is when only words, letters and maybe a character or two shows up against a black background behind them. But it's not just the words, letters and characters on the blackbackgrounds, it's also the CONTENT in the words, letters and backgrounds. As I'm terrible at explaining, I'll just have to do with another example. "It has reached him..." So WHAT has reached him? Who knows? The "..." also means that something will bound to happen sometime. This adds the feeling of mystery and darkness into the anime. Art: 7/10 I absolutely love the backgrounds. The backgrounds were drawn well and were extremely detailed and physically attractive. The animations were also clearly planned and well thought. For example, in the sky in the majority of the scenes, the clouds moves slowly along like it would be in real life (yes, I've even noticed that), but in most anime, the clouds would just be static. This adds to the effects of reality. However, the character designs were a bit off to me. Sometimes, the eyes were too high and the hair & clothes were too plain and simple which contrasted with the beautiful backgrounds and pulled down the overall mark for the art (especially Juu). I would have gave the art section a 10/10 if the character art were more decent. Also, the Characters' thoughts and feelings were clearly portrayed. You can easily perceive how the character is feeling by their facial expression. Sound: 9/10 The background music brings out the atmosphere and gives you the type of outcome you would expect in the anime. For example, you wouldn't expect fluffy fairies and recipies for cupcakes would you? Another good point is that the background music stops and enters at the correct moment. This includes when the setting is in a normal, everyday classroom and usual conversations. However, I find that the school is a bit too quiet to be a school. It's peculiar to find a school with only a few people who were actually talking. I expect a school to be much busier than that. The voice actors have also done an excellent job, the emotions, thoughts and feelings were portrayed clearly through their voices. Their voices were also neither too high pitched or too low. Character: 10/10 The characters' personalities are realistic and can be related to people in reality. There aren't any Mary Sues/Gary Stus appearing in the anime. I can see a decent amount of thought put into character development. They're fairly realistic and not the over-exaggerated stereotypical -dere character. At first glance, it seems that Juu's personality is the only one which is properly developed. If you find that the other characters' personalities are a bit too 'plain', don't forget that the anime is mainly in Juu's perspective. It's impossible for you to see deeply into other people's personalities. Enjoyment: 10/10 It could be just me. I personally really enjoyed this anime. I especially liked the background music(or it could be just me or the fact that I just like creepy/depressing music). In my opinion, this is amongst one of the best thriller anime I've watched so far. Overall: 10/10 Overall, I personally believe that Denpa Teki na Kanojo is an outstanding anime for a two episode OVA. It's clearly well thought out and portrays reality. The strong points are character development and the story(and my enjoyment)
Although the beginning was a bit confusing, I really got to like it after I watched it a bit. At first I was worried that it would quickly turn into one of those boring, fantasy, typical anime- nuh uh. Not with this anime. The story, in my opinion, was great. The plot was actually unique for once, like, REALLY unique. It merges horror+tragedy with highschool and romance well, but it has a bit of comedy too. Not sure how it all fits, but they work dat stuff like no other. I think if you liked anything like Mirai Nikki, you'll love this. The art couldbe a little better. . . The characters DO do what they should do, but they don't like .. .have enough force in it sometimes. And when I watch anime or read manga, I like to have it drawn a certain way. . . all I can say is I don't like the drawing style very much either. However, it's not BAD, so yeah. The sound was pretty much perfect in my ears- the talking, the aggressive voices, the screams, the little extra sounds. The soft music really gets me into the zone too. As far as character development goes, this OVA has one of the best ones I've ever seen. . . in both anime and manga. The only thing that would beat it is Code Geass, Mirai Nikki, and and a handful of other anime/mangas. Even though theres about 90 minutes of this OVA in total, the characters are introduced in a way thats not too complicated but still gets you to know and understand the characters thoroughly. I think it was fairly enjoyable, and anybody who likes a little romance with some horror and mystery would like this. But be prepared and bring your mature-brains when you watch this. . . *you're hearing this from a middle schooler. Ahh, how sad.* Overall, I would've given it a 9/10. I absolutely loved the story and sound, and the characters were pretty nice- however, the art was kind of the downfall for me, personally.
Easiest way to explain this should would be if expection bar was low as it possible could be , like its on the fucking ground , Denpa-teki na Kanojo sees this, gives a smirky look and proceeds to start digging tunnel underneath the bar. Denpa-teki na Kanojo is one of hollowest work of anime i have ever watched to the point that i was pretty sure this was a troll show made deliberately to be absolute trash and i feel like idiot for falling for low level bait. moving on , this show is listed as mystery thriller, school although it should say"complete dumpster trash". Listen show then cast consists of 4 characters and 2 are protagonists and one is killed, its doesnt take collective deducing power of L, Sherlock and every detective in existence to guess who murder might fucking be. thriller , well yes if in about 40 minutes of watching there are bout 2 frames showing dead bodies counts as thriller . So you not going to be getting any juvenile violence to entertain you. ah yes school . Well school part is just excuse to have characters be high schoolers and so that sho can go "booooh look at this high schoolers being guilty and making yandere faces booohh so scaaary' I'll be frank unless your 6 or your definition of horror includes shitily edited ghost videos from 2010 youtube, this show is one of laziest works of fiction you will come across and I advise to go watch something else like Shiki
Story (3/10) - poor "Denpa-Teki Na Kanojo" is about crazy girls, crazy girls that don't make any sense. Obviously, the main reason for their poor development is the small number of episodes. But, if they made a movie instead of an OVA, maybe they could develop something more believable. If you decide to add reason behind a Yandere character's actions, at least make them sound somewhat believable, otherwise just stick to their pure craziness and don't try to create empathy for those characters. The psycho-girls in this Anime, as I already said, make no sense. They're focusing too much on shocking and graphic scenes - obviously, the only way to portray a messed up characters - and then, from nowhere, they begin to show how those psychos actually victims while sticking to the shock factors that make absolutely no sense. Art (6/10) - Fair Some characters look okay, some worse. I personally don't like the eyes art-style, it makes some characters look bad. Sound (5/10) - Mediocre I assume it's a low-budget Anime, so there's no OP and the sounds are generic. Characters (4/10) - Decent I pretty much summarized everything while reviewing the story. The only thing I can add is that the characters had a potential, it feels like they could be interesting characters if they were developed correctly. Enjoyment (5/10) - Mediocre Nothing interesting, yet not too boring - good to kill time. Overall (5/10) Maybe instead of misleading people with the title they actually should have made a sci-fi.
One of the characters in this out-of-the-ordinary masterpiece describes this anime very well. For those of you familiar with the term "tsundere", prepare for yet another stereotypical storyline where the spiky hardshelled teen has a difficult love life, learns the meaning of happiness, and solves crimes with his generic emo friend. But the difference here is, that the walls that usually separate what is acceptable in a program and what is not don't exist. So the psycho rapist WILL have his way with his sister, people who deserve it WILL die and not come back again, and your heartstrings WILL be pulled at watching it. The bottom lineis, although the setup and plotlines are at times extremely predictable, it's a deeply engrossing experience. Fans of "School Days" will love this.
Well I didn't really had my hopes up at start. And after 3 minutes of watching I decided to end it. I recently watched ecchi anime so it is hard to concentrate with this depressing psychological anime. But I checked the rating for this and it had a 8.14 so I gave it another shot. And hell I was surprised this anime is amazing. Story: There are 2 episodes, with two different stories who stand aside from each other (except for the characters). The first episode is about a serial killer, I have to say that it is pretty obvious who the killer is, but there is aamazing twist halfway the series. A deep emotional plot that goes back to the beginning of the anime. It is simply amazing how you can feel hatred pity and some weird enjoyment over the passing events. The first episode leaves us with a lot of philosophy questions about justice? or about the joy of killing and the emotions victims have. It is all very dark and scary but at the same time you feel closer to each and everyone in the anime. It is a weird but a wonderful experience. The second episode is different, it's about pranks that people have to endure. They are mostly not that harmful like prank calls, stealing clothes etc. But it goes far more deeper and it becomes far more darker at the time we see the culprit. This second episode is all about happiness and it is incredible, it goes so deep that we go back to the beginning at what happiness is. There is a beautiful philosophy about happiness and I'd love to discuss it with people here some day, but I won't spoil it in here. So if you like to discuss the philosophy of this anime after you've watched it feel free to do so :) I liked the second episode better since even after it is all finished and explained there is yet another twist and the ending leaves us with yet another philosophy statement. Simply amazing. Characters: All those characters we see in this anime are kinda weird, you wonder in what kind of city this man lives. But the main character is a decent guy, he is lonely yet cool, he is the kind of person who fights a lot but also thinks a lot. Well the whole guy is nice to watch. And his knight (a girl who claims to be his knight in a previous life) is adorable and yet a bit creepy. She is intelligent although we don't get to learn much about her. Witch kinda bugged me but overall this anime was amazing, it was sometimes very easy to spot the culprit etc. But they give so much more stuff to think about and there are so many twists that that isn't a weak point of the anime. But a very strong point. Verdict: I loved this small ride of 2 episodes. I wish they made more. This dark psychological approach of the story is just brilliant. And I personally love anime that make me think ones they are over. So please enjoy this anime and watch it yourself. If you like philosophy or just a good old ''who is the culprit'' then you should watch this anime. Truly amazing. Cheers Lucid
This OVA belongs to the psychological anime genre, and is a good series to start with this genre and later watch other series more complex. Despite the fact that is really simple, it doesn't make it worse. The realistic tone, along the anime stereotypes like the past lives or the alien secret conspiracy, just exist in the head of the characters, but the aftermath is real, with real people being murdered. A series that show us, without showing more fantasy than people's delusion, that the fantasy can affect reality in dangerous ways. The visual aspects of the story are just ok enough, but thescreenplay and the characters are what makes the series so appealing, specially the mean duo, Juu and Ame, a problematic but kind-hearted boy with the feet on the ground and a sinester-looking but adorable girl with the head in the clouds.
Even though it makes a bold entrance suggesting a rough ride, it manages to come of a light thriller with a nice selection of interesting characters. The pace is good and the story is presented with very good timings. The plot turns at moments where its "just right" which makes watching this OVA very entertaining. I don't want to downplay the mature content and it may leave scars to younger viewers but i found it not as dark as it could have gotten, and being aimed at a mature audience the plot seemed a little bit too easy. If you are a seasoned thriller/crime vieweryou will know what i mean. But then we have the overall good presentation and sound, a nice atmosphere and just 2 hours to wrap things up. I would say it has been pulled off alright. The only thing i didn't understand was why they decided to do the two and only episodes with different stories. If they knew they only can do a small OVA why bother trying to suggest an ongoing show with returning characters? Well, i wouldn't mind this as a show, but leaving things like this might come off as fast exit, while there was really no need to rush things. The beginning was brilliant and could have been easily extended. Overall: It's a perfect "movie" for a mild summer night. Good flow and not too heavy of a theme. Wouldn't mind to see this again.
This review is mostly going to explain some of the importance of the psychology in this production, because you can already read usual reviews of this show, just in case this will not suffice as a review, I will make a small one at the bottom. I hope this review will not spoil the surprises found in this OVA, I will not mention any characters or events, but the psychology of the series, if you do not want to read it, please skip to "--- Psychology END ---" at the bottom. --- Psychology --- Denpa teki na Kanojo does an amazing job in my opinion on creating charactersthat can be psychologically manipulated (Namely, the antagonists.) The character that does the manipulating- it's questionable how she does it, but with that aside - is very good at what she does, the writing is very smart. Mainly in episode two, where the protagonist manipulates the antagonist by using the antagonist's mentality of reality as a measure to change the antagonist's perception of her own reality, instead of common law, or common sense that many shows try to force down the antagonist's throats. That was something I have not seen in a production, or at least so obviously pointed out, in such a way. As the show points out very well, people who are psychotic, do not have common sense, or the same type of common sense that most people have (Obviously), but to understand enough one others psychology to the point of using it to manipulate, is not pointed out in productions like this very often (In my opinion). The direction of this production helps enhance the mood of these psychotic, and psychological scenes. To conclude, this OVA is a thriller, but much more psychological than even your average psychological thriller. --- Psychology: End --- Story: It is more psychological than your average psychological thriller, and very well written. Anymore and it would be a spoiler. Art: The art is better than what everyone is saying it is in my opinion. It fits the production well enough. But that's not saying too much. For and OVA, usually the production quality would be extremely high, due the amount of time they have to produce each episode. The facial expression are good enough, and you can tell how a character is feeling when it is silent, but there could have been more detail. Sound: I actually liked the music in the production, it enhanced the direction and cinematography. But it's not really great listening music, unless you like slightly creepy atmospheric music. Also most of the production has no music at all, which fits the show very well. The seiyuu do a very good job on they're respective characters, and never sound like they are out of character. The SFX were done well enough. Character: Now this is where it gets good. This is the reason why you should watch the show. I'll let you experience it, instead of explaining it. Besides, I have an essay talking about the character anyway at the top of this review, so anymore would be redundant. Enjoyment: I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this show. I decided to watch it because I saw it was getting good reviews. It's very short, so I thought it would be a nice thing to watch. I don't usually like thrillers, especially very dark ones, but this one surprised me with its psychology. You will enjoy this show if you like psychological series. Overall: Denpa teki na Kanojo is a very well written psychological thriller. If you are interested, watch it whenever you can. The pacing is great, and you never feel like you're waiting for something to happen.
I'm going to attempt to give my impression with little to no spoilers, but I might slip-up a bit, so read with caution. In any case, I'm mainly concerned with the characters and plot. It would appear that Denpa-teki was attempting to be deep and meaningful, presenting a number of life questions through character dialogue. But rather than answer said questions in meaningful ways, like tying them into the plot in the form of lessons learned or something of that nature, they are instead replaced with some contrived world logic/ ideology with little basis in reality. What is presented are a few different psychopathscommitting crimes for superficial reasons. There's essentially one case with a single culprit or two for each episode. With this, the main characters attempt to resolve said crimes after seemingly being dragged into them. The resolution of conflicts in both episodes aren't very interesting, anticlimactic even, though at times the situations were ridiculous enough to get me to chuckle. With this in mind, I find a number of inconsistencies and illogical behavior in this show. There are a few scenes where it would make a great deal of sense to call the police, but with little explanation or reason, the characters decide to take things upon themselves. The police seem fairly useless in this show anyway, so I guess you can't blame them, though the main male does pretend to try and call at one point. You could say they were simply stubborn or felt a strong sense of justice, but there's little reason to believe the extremes displayed. Their actions are simply convenient for plot. There are also instances where they should have died, but are spared either by a hand wave, like uncanny luck or temporary emotional diarrhea on part of the culprits. I don't always have an issue with this if executed in an interesting or humorous manner, but Denpa-teki uses clumsy excuses. Character motivations are largely unexplained. Any attempt at exploring a character's backstory is very short and offers little in information. At most, it is shown that a few of the characters have met in the past and may have shared an emotional experience, but this is the extent of such scenes. For example, the main heroine's obsession with the male protagonist is never really explained, and it appears she's simply suffering from chuunibyou syndrome. The contents of her room, and even her sister, seem to imply this. She goes on about a connection to him from a previous life, but aside from a brief scene from her childhood in the second episode, this is the extent of it. For the most part, she stalks him a lot, and it's only in the second episode does an inkling of intuition actually lead her to him. The male protagonist is hinted at having some kind of troubled past, but this is hardly explored. It could be gathered that his parents are dead, but this is never made explicit. According to him, it's none of your business. Just accept that he's moody and troubled. His behavior is also a bit inconsistent toward the end. I was initially fond of him for his convincingly natural lack of restraint when angry, while also maintaining a sense of respect for those who deserved it. He could be described as the type who'd choose to fight, rather than flight or freeze. But by the second episode, for no real reason, he becomes fairly useless. There are a number of scenes where you'd expect him to jump into action, only to have him freeze in place instead. He does make up for this a couple of times, but there's little reason for the times when he doesn't. Aside from the fact that this was inconsistent with his character earlier on, it also fell out of line with his eagerness to pursue the crimes presented in the show. The last few scenes in episode two were the most irritating in this regard. The rest of the characters are either psychopaths with poor, unconvincing reasons for being so, or served nothing more than to aid the main characters. The art style is nothing special, and the animation is a bit awkward in a couple of scenes. I have an HD copy of both episodes, so I'm skeptical that it's due to poor file quality or corruption. Overall, this OVA was disappointing. While I seldom watch shows that dive deep into the human psyche, or address life's most challenging questions, I've watched enough of them to know this one fails to do either very well. Episode one was much better than two, and I feel it would have been fine on its own.
School bad boy Juu is approached by a small girl from another class, Ochibana Ame, who claims to be his faithful servant from a previous life. Is mentally ill, obsessed or telling the truth. One thing is sure is that she has a knack of knowing when Juu is in trouble. Together they solve serial killings and the sinister secret of the Happiness Club. Negative point first and it really lets the anime down and stops me giving it 10/10 and that is the art work. It is terrible and the show deserves better. All the characters are excellent. Juu and Ame work well together despite beingcompletely different, the bad guys are completely psychotic but the show tells you why they are the way they are so it isn't random, Ame's spunky sister Hikaru and Ame's bad ass friends Madoka and Yukihime. Both stories are well thought out and keep you hooked from the beginning Juu and Ame's relationship develops well over the 2 OVAs and at the end you'll probably think they have a romance more than a bond from a previous life. What makes it special is that Ame's eyes are covered for a long time by her long fringe so when we see her eyes for the first time it isn't just Juu's breath that is taken away. To finish on a negative note: THEY SHOULD HAVE MADE MORE THAN TWO!!!!
Denpa Teki is one of those shows where you finish and realize that you really want more. It's a two-episode action/thriller/mystery OVA with a hint of comedy but lots of dramatism (think Kara no Kyoukai-esque murders only without the magical powers/abilities). By the same author as Kurenai, this OVA covers novels 1 and 3 (out of a meager total of 3) of the light novel. The story is about a blonde punk (my first impression) who happens to gain an inseparable sidekick (think mysterious master/servant) in the form of a girl who can somehow sense when Juu is in danger (hense Denpa), and who pledgesto serve him unquestioningly. This was a very enjoyable, if not overly brief, endeavor and I would highly recommend giving it a try. Animation: The animation style is a bit unique in this series, and will definitely take a little getting used to. There are many scenes where you can tell they were on a budget, including randomly panning to a really freaky looking mannequin that will forever haunt your memories. There are also moments where the series loses a bit of sharpness, and a few camera angles that "save" the viewer from some of the more grueling discoveries. These aside, the animation is fairly well done. To start, there is vivid use of color the influence the mood of the situation. Furthermore, all the characters have unique styling; I particularly liked how they made use of Ame's hair throughout the series. The OVA does contain a decent amount of blood and some highly suggestive scenes, as well as a fair amount of action. The fights are a few levels below what you'd find in Kara no Kyoukai, but mostly because they're typically very short and don't make use of magical elements (and don't have the talent of Kalafina to back the animation). Sound: The series only has two EDs, one per episode, which vary from meh to fairly good. The BGM is very ambient-based and is used very effectively when present. It isn't anything as grand as Yuki Kajiura but has a unique feel due to it's use of percussion and a (traditional?) banjo/guitar. The VA list is quite impressive with many huge names voicing supporting characters. The mains aren't bad either. Juu is voiced by the human dude (similar personality) in Level E and Ame's VA has a quiet feel that matches her personality very well. Story: This OVA is a perfect example of how to do short pieces well. It provides decent background information while also telling a surprisingly intricate story, all while pushing through some really sharp plot twists to keep you on edge. It also does so without leaving the viewer in a WFT state, which so many short OVAs end up doing. This series is similar to Kara no Kyoukai because of the murder/mystery context, and discovering how twisted human nature can be. That being said, I hope the world is a bit more kind than the one depicted here as there are way too many people who are a bit unstable. I'm also a little confused at how Ame has friends who can easily break a deadbolt. There are a few plot holes and unnecessary sacrificial moments by Juu but all and all the story is well done, especially considering the length. Character: There isn't too much exploration here, given the focus on the story and plot line, which is one of the primary reasons why the viewer will probably want more once they finish watching. The Ame-Juu relationship is just starting when the show finishes and it just feels like there's so much more untapped potential in this series. Value: There are few shows that match the excitement and intrigue of this series that also fit into this length category. It truly is a very entertaining watch, and one that actually has re-watch value as well.
