In their last year of middle school, the five band members of CRYCHIC went their separate ways after an unpleasant disbandment. Each wrestling with their own regrets, the girls enrolled in different high schools, hoping never to hear from one another again. Meanwhile, Anon Chihaya transfers to Haneoka Girls' Academy in the middle of the school year. As most students play in a band as a hobby, Anon desires to fit in and spends her first days trying to recruit members for her own band, envisioning herself as the group's vocalist. She befriends Tomori Takamatsu, a shy girl who seems interested but hesitant about joining. As it turns out, Tomori used to be part of CRYCHIC, an experience that has scarred her deeply. Through Tomori, Anon meets Taki Shiina and Soyo Nagasaki, both former members of the same band. Although Taki detests the idea of playing with Anon, Soyo is delighted to help her out. Now with Soyo by her side, Anon's dream of forming a band is within reach—if only she could find a few more members. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

*BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!!* has its characters start at the lowest point imaginable – a band having broken up, friendships fractured, and feelings hurt. Togawa Saki rubbed salt on a wound so quickly and ruthlessly that any chance at repairing things reads as nonexistent. Considering how much the franchise up to this point has relied on its sense of communal fun, it seems like the most-antithetical, experimental, and sure-to-fail approach that could have been taken. To be sure, the franchise has never been afraid to dip its toe into the more-dramatic aspects of its universe; the two-part *Episode of Roselia* film series and the arcsfrom seasons two and three certainly showed that. But to start at the absolute bottom and with that melancholic overhang? It’s making a sincere ask of its audience by doing so. And it’s not the only gamble it took, either. After 2022’s *BanG Dream! Poppin’ Dream* film, the animated franchise as we knew it was over. For three seasons, many specials and MVs, and that most-recent outing, the series had well and truly run its course. The final performance seemed to encapsulate everything that the series had been blooming at that point in time, relying upon both its fun music and its fun characters to create something that meant smiles and “kira-kira-doki-doki” were never in short supply. But what was also present was the finality of it all; the performance within the context of that film clearly indicated that if things were to continue onward, it would not be in the same way. A change was needed to inject some life into a franchise that, while not old or long overstaying its welcome, had to create something new. You can only rely on the same seven bands up to a certain point. Even though only one band is featured in the course of *BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!!*, it’s really a story of two separate(?) bands. Left in the wake of CRYCHIC’s breakup, the cast is left socially and spiritually adrift, made all the easier by them attending three different schools. The breakup haunts the characters like a ghost, dogging them and their motivations nearly every step of the way. Some of the lingering relationships, such as the one between Takamatsu Tomori and Shiina Taki, are more stable than others, while Nagasaki Soyo cannot seem to stop trying to talk to Saki, the breaker of CRYCHIC. Kaname Raana is disparagingly referred to as a “stray cat” by Taki, coming and going to RiNG whenever she feels like shredding on her guitar. And all the while, a new girl named Chihaya Anon enrolls at one of the schools and wants to form a band of her own, not realizing the emotional tempest she’s wandered into and how it will clash with the emotional baggage she has brought herself. Everyone presented has their own reasons for wanting to form the band, yet the result is that *BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!!* allows all its main characters to assume the antagonist role—either directly or indirectly—at some point or another, with their own fixations and motivations steering the ship. Bossiness, assuming too many responsibilities, and a sense that the band is boring are recurring and longstanding. These are not situations that are resolved via quick gags or in one-episode spans; temporary respites or patchwork solutions might stop the bleeding, but the lingering wound remains. Abandonment and being effectively “lost in the wilderness” stains all the CRYCHIC members, Anon, and Raana, whether that came in the form of it being imposed on them or them carrying that weight long after the fact. It creates a deliberately infused disharmony, with everyone operating on separate wavelengths that only happen to align with each other every once in a while. It’s not until the final few episodes that the familiar mold of *BanG Dream!* starts to manifest, but the shape and color therein are distinctly *MyGO!!!!!’s* own, never to be confused with any of the prior bands or seasons. As such, its sense of communal atmosphere is also wholly unique to itself. Most surprisingly in this respect however is its humor; the jokes (both one-off and running) throughout, while not on the same wavelength as the previous installments, still are unmistakably *BanG Dream!*-esque. However, they also utilize the inherent disharmony I alluded to before as one of the central ingredients to making the drama work as well. Of note here is Raana; since she functions as the show’s wild card in terms of personality, she’s more or less off in her own world, moving wherever her whims take her. That comedic chaotic energy acts as a rather effective bridge to lead into *BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!!’s* more dramatic moments. The comedy therefore acts as an orientation for the next phase of the drama, or a simple little indulgence for a moment. It’s not a crutch, but a part of its integrated whole. In that spirit, it’s the most experimental that the franchise has been in this respect, which makes even its not-really-that-funny gags feel funnier than they might have been otherwise. I used the word “experimental” before when describing both the show’s comedy and drama. In using that word though, I don’t want to be misunderstood. This is not anime arthouse, but in the context of the rest of the franchise, it certainly feels experimental. *BanG Dream! It’s MyGO!!!!!* made the effort to avoid stagnancy, and in so doing, breathed new life into the franchise. It dared to bring the dramatic to the fore, to have its characters argue while musically sucking and getting on each other’s nerves, and SANZIGEN made its 2D and 3D animations smoother than ever. It did all of that while not betraying the franchise’s communal spirit. It asserted its right to exist by having it come together, and ranks as one of the more structurally-cohesive installments *BanG Dream!* has had yet. They won’t be lost forever.
'BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!!' expands on the format already established by the first three seasons of the anime while bringing with it amazing visuals and brilliant characters, all delivered with excellent emotional moments and writing. there are few things that can compare to losing a friend. the hole in your life they tear open by leaving, the gap in days where they used to be and the reminders of memories you made staring you all in the face. maybe it was a wrong turn you took that drove them away, perhaps it was something you said or maybe your paths were never meant to cross inthe first place. the spring sunlight paints over the memories, and leaves a gallery in your mind of the moments lost to time. this is exactly what the show feels like, a showcase of tomori's memories that stretches out into melancholy vistas that will put tears in your eyes and make you reflect on your own life, on the people you have lost and can never go back to. tomori herself is a particular favorite of mine for everything done with her character. she's a hurt girl with everything to lose, nothing but her words to guide her in an uncertain world where everything feels dangerous because she's terrified of being hurt again. hina yomiya's voice provides incredible depth to her character, making tomori's most emotional scenes feel real in a way i do not have words for. soyo is also a standout, her lowest moments coinciding with tomori's and her overall deceptive nature were both compelling points to her character that were executed perfectly, specifically the scene with saki. this anime takes these emotions and weaves them into a story about learning to move on and let go while entangling each passing moment with gorgeous visuals that will leave you stunned. it's truly amazing how much sanzigen can squeeze out of these models, the raw emotion and visual complexity that's able to be achieved here really impressed me especially in comparison to some of their other projects (bandori s2 specifically). it goes without saying that this show is definitely not perfect. off the top of my head i can think of at least three episodes that are entirely unnecessary and i would actually recommend people just watch the first twelve episodes, thirteen really felt unnecessary and disconnected from the main plot. the ending here is actually nonexistent as well, which is fine for those who play the mobile game but must be jarring for those who do not. rana's character, while having a few good moments is entirely unnecessary, clearly there to fill out a fifth character position. i still love her though, as i do all of the main cast. all in all, the release of this anime was a breath of fresh air breathed into the bandori franchise, bringing emotional storytelling to the forefront that makes for a well rounded experience, all things considered. i'm incredibly pleased with the direction of the series and how competent it seems to be when writing its characters and fleshing them out, and excited for the future of bandori's forays into anime.
I really wanted to love this. Ends up more in the "like" column. Overall, this is a step in the right direction for music anime. Yes this does a few innovative things... for a Bang Dream show. It has deep, complicated characters and relationships... for a Bang Dream show. It has fairly strong music... for a Bang Dream show. The plot itself is not terribly complex, which is not a problem if you have strong performances. Sadly, the voice acting is not up to snuff. When you realize that Bang Dream was conceived as a money machine first andeverything else a distant second, the seams in the product really start to show. Sure there's some appeal to having your anime characters jump out into real life and play an actual concert... but the anime suffers for it. Anon is the "leader" trying to form a group, but is lacking in charisma. Tomori is the group's emotional core, but her performance fails to capture the emotional depth to suggest she could generate the lyrics she writes. A lot of the positives and negatives cancel out. +1 for great concert animation - 1 for really crap animation otherwise +1 for Bang Dream fan service -1 for yuri bait (Bang Dream is notorious for this) +1 for real teenage problems -1 for poorly acted teenage problems Watch Bocchi the Rock instead. Watch this if you absolutely must have another music anime in your life. Otherwise, don't settle for scraps.
This is a review from a guy who never watched or played BanG Dream before, a pure and honest review on MyGO!!!!! In short: Great anime in terms of script writing and camera usage, one of the best anime in 2023, super popular in Asian comminity. I’ll try to keep this neutral and no spoiler. ~What is 'MyGO!!!!!'? MyGO!!!!! is an original anime from a girl band series called "BanG Dream ''. And MyGO!!!!! is one of the newest bands in 2023. However, the show does nothing about the old series. There's only a couple of easter eggs for old fans, and none of them will affect newcomers to enjoy the show. Hence, MyGO!!!!! at the same time is also a 2.5 dimension project, which means voice actors will also hold a live concert. For more information you might check out their official website or watch live clips on their official youtube channel. ~What is MyGO!!!!! about? A story about 5 young girls gathering together and playing music, like Bocchi the Rock but with a more realistic element in the show. The details, camera language and script writing skill in this show is peak. The first half of the show feel like watching the first half of Steins;Gate, kinda boring and having a slightly negative feeling to the main characters. However, starting from episode 5-6, things started to get moving. After watching all 13 episodes, I will say, all the characters' actions are fully logical and loyal to their character settings. No unnecessary breaking character for the plot or any other reason. And I believe there’s no loopholes throughout the whole story, apart from things going to be mentioned in AveMujica. ~Which type of people will enjoy MyGO!!!!! People who are looking forward to enjoy a well-written drama/ complicated relationship/ school or band theme. If you are here just seeking some “cute girls doing cute things”, you might have to consider watching Lycoris Recoil/ Bocchi/ Tensei Oujo to Tensai Reijou no Mahou Kakumei instead of MyGO!!!!!. Which is because even though there’s “cute girls doing cute things” in MyGO!!!!!, most of the time is quite “stressful” when you see characters dealing with that complicated relationship. Also, from what I’ve heard, people who like Shoujo☆Kageki Revue Starlight will also like this show. ~Personal thought An anime starts off with all the debuffs you can imagine, such as “3D, original, girl’s band, etc”. From nobody cares to being the top anime in 2023, it became super popular among the Japanese, Taiwanese, Chinese community. MyGO!!!!! give back the joy and faith to the audience on “original anime”. In the past 2 years, Lycoris Recoil and Witch from Mercury was great from the start. Unfortunately, I am truly not satisfied with how they script the last few episodes. Is it too much to ask to tell a good story within 12 episodes? And my answer is “no”, this anime just gives me the perfect answer sheet I’ve been looking for. Hate to say this but at first I wasn’t liking this show very much, the voice acting was a bit off (most of them are new voice actor), and 3D anime… And now, I like this show just how much I love Steins;Gate. I can’t stop looking for fan work or official things to fulfill the emptiness after finishing the whole series. And yes, now I simp for their voice actors, I watch their official podcast on Youtube and follow their social media, and admire their hard work. So, if you do find interest in this show after reading this, watch it and let’s hype for AveMujica anime in January 2025 together.
This episode just gave shape and a clear explanation to the entire anime with that ending, why Sakiko is the most toxic character in the anime and her problems, if it weren't for her none of this anime would have developed. This anime is objectively speaking the best product ever released in the anime musical genre in history, not only the discography and improvement in visual quality speak very well of it but also the complexity of its characters and how they solved their problems by adapting to a great scheme of personalities, just as it happens in real life. Even the transition episodes weregreat, since they provided adequate continuity and gave shape to the plot that was being discussed at the time. music: 9/10 animation quality:8/10 characters:9/10 plot: 10/10 finals: 10/10 average:9/10 my personal rating: 10/10
I’m not the kind of person that needs to pretend that everything they like is a masterpiece, somethings I like are good, but not perfect, others I have no problems admitting are just plain garbage. But Mygo? The fact that this anime doesn’t even get half the recognition it deserves drives me INSANE no anime has hit me since day one quite like this. Every single scene comes together like a beautiful tapestry, every line of dialogue, every symbolism, every camera angle, it’s woven so expertly, that I’m in pure awe that many of the decisions made weren’t pre-planned at all. The characters? So raw andreal, they’re messy, but not in the over theatrical way, they’re all just figuring out how to be teenagers, how to be human, and they can’t even call each other proper friends, but they understand each other. The mystery? (Because I fully consider this a mystery) incredible, I’m still geeking out about it, everytime I try to understand it it’s like I’m falling through the rabbit hole (in a good way), it’s not convoluted at all, and every piece of the puzzle just fits in a way that makes me want to bash my head against the wall and gift all of them therapy for Christmas. The music? I cried like a baby twice and plan to do more. It makes such incredibly creative directing choices, it doesn’t feel the need to explain everything through dialogues or monologues but just lets the story speak for itself, it’s, like, SUCH a funny show.I want to put everyone in a labyrinth an analyze their actions like a mad scientist Considering how popular female lead band anime has become thanks to shows like bocchi, and with this year’s girls band cry, I have no idea how this hasn’t reached the top, maybe it’s because it’s attached to a pre-existing IP, but I feel like if it was another more popular genre, or if it had an audience of western male anime fans, it would get the 10 ir rightfully deserves It all feels so natural and real, I’ve known these girls throughout all my life, and I loved them, and I hated them, and I was each and every one of these girls at one point, these girls know me and I know them. These girls hold me by the hand and tell me it’s ok to be lost, that I can go one, and I believe them.
The most surprising thing about MyGO is how it even came to existence. If you told me the same people who did all the Sanzigen Bandori shows were doing a full drama-focused entry, I'd have avoided it based on that alone. The series does not have a good track record for its forced drama moments, and the first Roselia movie was practically a lesson on how NOT to do a drama-focused show. My main problems were that how superficial and self-congratulatory the drama is depicted in these shows, where everyone is overly nice and forward-looking, and everyone has that "corporate-friendly/marketable" personality which means no onecan truly be a terrible person. Then somehow MyGO happened. From the get go you have Anon, who may seem like a genki type like Kasumi and the like, but has her own depths and personality (you know, character flaws and all, like a real character) and personal motivation so she's not just another bland archetype. It's like this for everyone in the cast, even the most seemingly well-adjusted character has some personal issues of their own. What works is how the show handles its drama, where everything isn't solved amicably or with a cry and a hug. Even at the end of the show you do get the sense that nothing is truly completely resolved, but everyone is just gonna try to move on regardless. Honestly the closest comparison I can think of (esp when it comes to Bushiroad shows), would be Revue Starlight. Except here, the conflict isn't immediately resolved and forgotten, but you have a character undergo a permanent change in personality, and the conflict everyone went through is still a sticking point in everyone's lives, not readily forgotten. Soyo's line at the end still lingers in my mind. But what truly surprised me was the amount of effort went into scene composition and audio mixing. Prior to this, Bandori had some of the blandest cinematography in a show, which is fine for a CGDCT show, but really hurts it when it's trying to have a Serious Drama Moment. Morfonication tried doing some creative shots every now and then, but the serious moments fell flat because of mediocre audio mixing. This isn't the case for MyGO, where you can tell a lot of work was put into finetuning how the scenes are presented, from the subdued lighting, to the framing of scenes (eg how the angle the piano room is shot in gradually tilts as the show goes on), to how the ambient noise subtly increases in volume during awkward moments, it really makes for a masterful presentation you would not expect from BanG Dream. For instance, compare Shiro's scene in Morfonication to Anon's scene in episode 5 where they are in a similar situation, and see the difference in how both scenes are handled. MyGO is mesmerizing. It's a show where people aren't just walking archetypes, and a show where the emotions really run raw. It's uneasy, uncomfortable, but at the same time, refreshing and grounded. At the end of the day, everyone is flawed and lost, but at least we can all be lost together. 9/10
When I finished watching this show, I have to shout: "Wow!! That's how you should do drama in anime!!!". What I'll be writing here is purely my thoughts on the show. Before you read it, I'm assured you there is no spoilers and you don't need to know and watch any previous installments of the BanG Dream! Franchise to watch It's MYGO!!! And I'm a big fan of CGDCT anime along with idol/ music anime overall, so what I think is good might be a little bit bias. The series kicks off with a more gloomy and somber tone than most idol shows! CRYCHIC, a girls bandbroke up without knowing the reasons, it left all its member pain, trauma and broken hearts. This took a surprising turn cause' BanG Dream! is mostly known as an anime with a really fun, bright story blending with some melodrama. The story starts when transfer student Chihaya Anon wants to start a high school band and her journey to unknowingly gather all the members of CRYCHIC. She just doesn't know how much of a bumpy road she's gonna walk on. As with all great slice of life, It's MyGO!!!! is a heavily character driven anime. And this anime has a really strong, colorful and grounded cast. All the characters, while still showing some signs of common tropes are all fleshed out, acting with realistic motives. I love the way they agonize through their mistakes and the way they deal with their trauma, it's really relatable and interesting. For characters, i give 10/10. The music is top-notch!!! BanG Dream! always has great music but I personally enjoy the music of this installment the most!! A lot of real passionate, melancholic and raw soundtracks in this show. I'm sure any of you who's tired of the usual anime songs will love the music of this show. Overall, It's MyGO!!! is not just a great idol anime! It's also a wonderful coming-of-age, a dramatic showing of pains, fears, losses, acceptance and love!
If there is a ranking list for the most underrated anime in history, this is top 1. People would easily overlook MyGO because 1) it's part of the Bang Dream universe 2) it's the cliche "cute high school anime girls do bands" genre 3) it's 2.5D. They are making a fatal mistake. MyGO has an insanely well-written story packed with unexpected plot twists, expressive details, and subtle emotions that very few anime, even beyond the cliche music genre, could handle. I was never a Bang Dream fan or ever a "girl band" fan, but now I have bought MyGO albums just because of this animealone. A flawless rollercoaster experience. I can't say anything about the other Bang Dream shows but MyGO is a standalone masterpiece. With all that being said, its final score depends on Ave Mujica, so fingers crossed.
The story of MyGO is one of the best in the Bang Dream series. The way they set things up and then made them pay off was amazing. They didn't leave any loose ends, even the small stuff. The camera work in the show was great. It helped us understand what the characters were feeling and set the mood for scenes. They also used the full versions of songs during live performances, which was a nice touch. The attention to detail in replicating Tokyo locations and musical equipment was incredible. You could even identify the gear used by the characters, which is awesome if you're a musicand gear enthusiast. MyGO consistently had good writing, and it wasn't afraid to show intense and emotional scenes. And if you're a cat lover, you'll be happy because the series has a character who's like a cat :3 Overall, MyGO is a show worth watching and appreciating.
In short, BanG Dream MyGO is absolutely outstanding. Not just a great BanG Dream anime, but a great anime in general. The show is a massive departure from the mess that made up the original anime trilogy. The plot has an actual sense of direction and cohesiveness, for one. For two, the writers have dropped the kira-kira doki-doki-ness, which I think is for the better. How more many generic wholesome music anime do we need? The story features heaps of internal and external conflict as the girls battle their pasts, themselves, and their fellow musicians. The drama never feels too heavy handed, yet has enough weightto make you feel invested. There's also plenty of "show don't tell" and foreshadowing to reward a rewatch or keen-eyed viewer. The animation is some of the best 3D I've ever seen. Episode 3 is completely in first person, literally putting you in the shoes of Tomori, MyGO's vocalist. Characters are plenty expressive, despite still having a somewhat "doll-like" appearance. But as a guitarist and bassist myself, the best part of the 3D animation (not only just in this anime) is smooth, accurate instrument playing. The voice actresses are phenomenal. Taki's "huh?!" will forever be burned into my brain. As for music, I'm personally not a fan of Tomori's airy voice, but the instrumentals are very strong (I love Soyo's growly basslines). Overall, I have the highest praise for the BanG Dream franchise taking this new direction. Now stop reading this and watch MyGO already; you don't need to slog through the original to enjoy it as much as I did.
I went into this thinking 'damn this gonna be boring asf lmao' but it's actually given me my second dose of autism arigathanks tomori-chan... First of all once again do not judge a book by its cover, I'd say the character designs are very VERY simple compared to other bandori characters especially when you could put MyGO!!!!! next to hello happy world and it'd look like they rocked up at the wrong kids party BUT THIS IS TO DECIEVE YOU MY FELLOW AUTISTICS DO NOT LOOK AWAY AND FOCUS ON THE BAND AIDS AND THE AQUARIUM TRUST ME In all honesty I think this is some ofthe best character writing bandori has ever done and I felt connections with all the characters YES EVEN SOYO I know twitter really hates mentally ill bitches but I'm not a soyo apologist I'm a soyo accepter let her be flawed she's so well written don't even PLAY with me mfs Anon is there ig #anonbigteethchihaya If you came for yuri stay for the yuri If you came for the music stay for the music If you came for the story stay for the story 9/10 very good only criticism is not enough girls kissing and tomori needs an episode to tell me about penguins I think can you use the budget for that cheers
10/10. I’ll review this as an anime enjoyer as well as a ex professional stage composer/producer/musician/roadman. Disclaimer, i will be more full nerd mode on analyzing the music. If you are not a music freak, maybe this anime will be somewhat tough to watch tho. I’ll start with the best part of the anime, the music. This anime is too good to be true. I’m a hardcore music enthusiast, not an elitist, i enjoy every genre i came across. From classical, rock, metal, folk, jpop/rock and all other genre and sub-genre that i can’t mention one by one because it would be too long. I judge music basedon the composition, for me theres 2 indicators of a great music. Balance composition instrumental wise in arrangements and the amount of effort that the song quality is made. Quality is not just based pure on how its sounds only. but i also rate on how i feel “how much effort” the composer put to compose the song. The songs from this anime has the most balanced vocal, percussion, guitar, bass balance sound wise. On par with Bocchi, as much as i love music and every instrument, i love bass the most on Jpop/rock because they brings out the full potential of the instrument. The reason i love hiroi kikuri’s SICK HACK. Before i dive into the bass culture in Jpop/rock, i was a person who think RHCP bass lines was hellish, everything changes after i was focusing on the funk, fusion jazzy style of bass lines in Jpop/rock. Jpop/rock’s bass line is harder than any other genre i’ve ever came across. Tool is hard, Dream Theater is also hard, but they are PROG sub genre are popular outside if Japan. But outside of japan an outsider usually only know 4 Genre of japanese music. Classic, Ballad, Pop and Rock. This anime not only incorporate Jpop/rock on the song choices, but surprisingly MIDWEST EMO, POST PUNK, some could also define SHOEGAZE. Usually i only hear classic, jazz, blues and particularly bunch of fusion in an anime with music theme. These few genres i didn’t even think to hear in an anime. But to be honest i was disappointed that the songs only came in 4/4, theres not much variety except for the genres, but because of the variety of genre that exist in this anime alone i don’t have the problem with the beat selection. The Anime, I will only say 1 spoiler and its not really a spoiler, but the build up from emo poetry into midwest emo into post-rock WAS AN ABSOLUTE CINEMA. a masterpiece like Bocchi’s improv in their first live! This anime is really well made, story wise, character writing animations. Good Job well done. Even though it utilize 3D CGI heavy, theres no sign of lazy animations. As far as i can see, theres few “human posture” that feels unhuman. Example, sometimes their arms hangs uncomfortably not very human like. Thats it. How the characters feeling is well incorporated with the build up and a bridging for the songs is masterfully done. The vocal’s imbalance shakes when its emotional is very realistic. The first rehearsal being not good and out of tune both the vocals and instruments is very well done. This is very realistic amateur band situation on handling first gigs. I thought i would hate this anime because of the heavy utilization of 3D CGI because i hate the recent adaptation of the Chainsaw Man and various anime that i scored with low numbers that heavily use 3D CGI when i’m a diehard fan of both of their manga. But i can pardon this one and can’t seem to hate this anime at all! this became one of my favorite. This as well with the sequel series is a masterpiece. This anime is its own masterpiece that incomparable with any other band themed anime. This isn’t a simple anime with light topics, ITS HEAVY AS FUCK. i came searching for CGDCT bocchi like theme but i end up loving this anime as much as i love bocchi, both music wise and story wise. the use of emo midwest post rock shoegaze was an absolute tasteful shit i’ve ever seen. I rate this 10/10, but i can’t rate this on par as Bocchi. Bocchi still number 1 and i can say this one is number 2 by a landslide even though they are both scored 10/10
Let's start with my overall impression: The anime is great, but it is not for everyone. The flaws are quite immediately obvious from the start. This is a 3D animated anime. For the most part it does not look good compared to most well-produced 2D anime. But credit's where it's due, as 3D animation goes, this is above average. The character expressions are done well, and the camera work is at times amazing, mainly during performance scenes. I can easily see many watchers turn away from this anime after the first episode or two. The strength of the anime starts to show from episode 3. The entireepisode tells the story about the previous band from Tomori's point of view. This is where I start to see the direction this anime is going. It is not a just a story about girls coming to form a band. It is also a story about dealing with the past. It is about conflicts happening due to personalities and motives. For me, the greatest strength of MyGO is character development. The band members are all flawed in their own ways, and their flaws lead to them making mistakes and hurting each other. Sometimes events take a sudden turn that may surprise you, but once you consider their personalities and motives, it makes perfect sense that the event happened the way it did. And because the events are mostly character-driven, the story feels organic and flows well. Pros: + excellent character development + character-driven story + the payoff is totally worth the long buildup + good use of 3D animation + music is good + stand-alone story does not require any knowledge about the Bang Dream franchise Cons: - 3D animation is done quite well, but it's still 3D animation - the first two episodes are probably the weakest - mixed feelings about VAs
A good band girl show with a unique entertaining female cast and some really good peaks with Sakiko and Tomori and the climax of the series in episode 10. My drawbacks would be that the visuals aren't for everyone, as the 3D bandori use isn't exactly beautiful, but the camera work in this season is at least unique every now and then. Secondly, the drama feels forced and overdramatic in the middle of the season. I didn't really like how it was written; it's not awful, just overblown at times. But yeah, bandori is evolving for sure as older bands are graduating, and I'm glad it'sgoing for something bold and unique in a new direction that pays off. I look forward to seeing more.
Being a long time fan of the Bandori franchise, I can honestly say that this anime completely subverted all of my expectations, in a very, very, VERY good way. Whilst the previous seasons of BanG Dream were of a happy-go-lucky style, this new, melodramatic instalment decides to express the unfiltered, raw emotions of bandmates who struggle to connect with each other, and their own selves. It's MyGO!!!!! tackles various issues associated with youth, such as the emotional trauma that followed a band's messy breakup, the communication difficulties between different characters, manipulation, the struggle for self identity, and more that I probably forgot to list. Asangsty as it all may sound, thankfully, the anime provides relief of the accumulated tension, letting them drop their facades and allow them to express their true emotions. Apart from the serious moments, the character interactions are always fun in this anime, and there's also something so raw and genuine about the way they decided to present each characters dialogue. Sure, each person may fall into one of the generic anime character tropes tropes, but yet, the scriptwriters and the seiyuus did a great job at making the interactions and dialogue sound so much more natural and less exaggerated. More about the animation, there is a noticeable step up in the CGI quality from the previous instalments. In the previous seasons, the characters looked a bit choppy and static. However, they've reduced the choppiness and and have made the characters look much more dynamic and expressive in terms of their actions and facial expressions. And of course, there was the cameo of A LOT of music brands and manufacturers. When it comes to music anime, it always puts a smile on my face when I see a music brand being represented, even if only in the background. The Bandori franchise has little shortage of that, and they have definitely upped the ante with It's MyGO!!!!!. Even in the first episode, you could clearly spot the Hartke amp and cab, and the Hughes & Kettner cab beside it. Even Vic Firth drumsticks were shown, which goes to show the level of detail they poured into this anime. Oh, and yes, Schecter and ESP are heavily used for the basses and guitars, with Schecter being much more in favour of the appearances. (I prefer Schecter anyways so it's a win for me at least). These few brands are definitely not the only ones shown, you'll have to watch each end credit and spot the mention of each brand to make note of most of them. The soundtrack was as exceptional as usual, with no qualms to be had. Nothing bad about the overall sound design too, the ambience was also very good. The raw audio of the guitar unplugged is always a nice touch. The only thing I would say that I found a bit off about the anime was a singular moment in episode 7. Now, this might be extreme nit-picking here, but around 19:55 into the episode, the levels of the audio monitoring didn't move in response to the music being played. This is the only thing that I found a bit strange, as you would have expected them to sync the audio monitoring levels to the actual music, especially knowing that they've already put a lot of detail into all the other small things. Other smaller nit-picks include the MIDI drum phrase at around 00:50 of the same episode, why use MIDI when you could just record the drums? They could have at least used a more realistic sounding VST. There is a similar incident in the anime where I can't remember the episode or timeframe, where a wind orchestra finished their piece. You could clearly hear the inauthenticity of the MIDI instruments. Again, they could have used slightly better VSTs or orchestral libraries, but that's just my composer side speaking. In truth, there was really nothing bad to say about it unless you're overly picky like I am. In short, I highly recommend it, especially if you like Bandori, or you don't mind the use of CGI, or you're a fan of melodramatic music anime, or you're just a music gearhead like me. If you fit into all the categories above, then it's an easy 10. 10/10, would watch again.
This is my first entry into Bang Dream but I am aware the mood is different from other series in the franchise. BanG Dream! It's MyGO!!!!! is simply amazing. The story is amazing and builds up appropriately keeping certain things secretive until it is time to address the issues. There is an crescendo of drama but with appropriate tension reliving moments up to the climax. Details are dropped at early times in the story to set the stage for further events. The main characters are all enjoyable. They feel internally logical and have great character arcs. My personal favorite is Soyo. She goes through a lotto end up the way she does at the end and none of it feels forced. Anon is an absolute saint and her interactions with everyone else is great. Minor characters that are important down the line are tastefully highlighted and add intrigue to the story. The music as a music anime is great and crucial to the story. I always like it when a music anime can have some beginner music practice fit in then some good sound tracks at the end. The animation is mediocre, as it is a 3DCG that is not GBC. Still despite being anime, I won't fault it so much because the rest of the show is super solid. It is worth giving a watch.
The first few episodes are quite amazing, but I think it drags on near the end, becoming a much more generic idol show. It's clear that the final few episodes are written just to get people interested in the new group, that (if you already know Bandori) just looks like Roselia 2.0. And, MyGo (the band) itself felt forced in the way it came together. Most of the characters don't feel like genuine friends, and it's treated like "once people get over their argument, they'll be besties!" which doesn't really make sense. The animation isn't bad, but I think it looks quite choppy at timeswhen they reduce the framerate to make it look 2D. The voice acting is pretty strong. I think people who liked Girls Band Cry or maybe Bocchi The Rock would like this, but I didn't, so I can only partially recommend it. Good luck
It seems that Japan has been taking the girls band/idol-ish subgenre a bit more seriously lately, so I wanted to check out some of those titles, starting with this entry of the vast BanG Dream multimedia franchise and all of their bands. Word online says that it’s different from other entries by being far more dramatic, but also falling into the exaggerated and overdramatic. Well, my opinion about it is fairly neutral, as it wasn’t what I was expecting in both a good and a bad sense. From the negative side, the tone wasn’t as serious as I expected it to be and the drama wasn’t asgood nor as well established as I was expecting, as there is no clear reasoning behind the disbanding of the former band until just a brief hint at the very end of the series. Thus the main conflict isn’t looked into enough in my opinion. From the positive side, reading about this show online, I expected it to be a lot more of a tearjerker that wants to manipulate your emotions with overdramatic reactions. Although it’s true that the characters tend to manipulate others and be somewhat toxic towards each other, the tone is not overdramatic nor melodramatic. Not that the plot is that good though, as the story is still fairly simple, the pacing rather slow and the band does progress fairly fast at the end especially considering all the issues it had, thus it is not that believable either. Another issue is that although the characters end up sticking together, it does not seem like they resolved the big issues between them, ending in a kind of a toxic working relationship if anything else. I wonder if that’s how the band was presented in the videogames, and what does it say about the real band that launched from this one lol. There are also references to other bands from the franchise and cameos of the ones that already had appearances in their own anime series, though I missed them at first because, well, this is the only series I watched from the franchise. I gotta say that every major band and character being nearby or having a direct connection with each other feels like a stretch though. The resolution is so-so, it is what it is, what you would expect from it, as the band stayed together, nothing special. It also confirmed a sequel series focused on another band from the franchise, and in turn focusing on the girl that broke the previous existing band I guess. They seem to have a gothic theatrical vibe in them, and although a bit pretentious, I did preferred them musically over MyGO!!!!!, and if the tone is like the one in here, I want to check it out when it comes out. The characters are also ok, they fit into a stereotype but are explored enough to explain their personalities with a half-decent result. I still think that they are very toxic towards each other to stay together, and their backdrop stories are way too simple to excuse any of their reactions, but having flawed characters with more than one dimension to their personalities does make them better than the competition. Other than that, despite their different stories, at the end of the day it all comes down to everyone wanting a place to belong, so the resolution of their character arcs do feel a bit samey and repetitive after a while. Just for the sake of writing some more both about them and in the review, I appreciate Komori being the shy, quiet and emotionally suppressed character moving from being the token girl to becoming a proactive character that learns to voice her thoughts and standing up to others and getting everyone together. Best girl not only for being the best written character, but also the most mentally sane. Anon was interesting to follow for how selfish and self-centered she was, yet still tries to be a good person and find her own path alongside the others. She is the second most looked into character, being the co-protagonist and main perspective we follow in the first half of the series and all. Her drama, backdrop and character arc of realizing she is not as amazing and special as she used to think was somewhat interesting to see. The others are not as good, Taki isn’t as interesting as she seemed to be, her initial rude behaviour changing to a kind of overprotective and maternal attitude around Tomori didn’t feel organic to make her a character that well written. As for Sayo…well, seeing the typical nice and relaxed girl that wants for everyone to be on good terms and stick together snapping and ending up being the worst and most manipulative and toxic character was kind of awesome at first, but it all resulted in the slowest and most overdramatic episodes in the whole series. Plus down to it, doesn’t Anon already fill her role in the story with being a fake nice girl and all? And her past of feeling lonely and wanting somewhere to belong and stuff does not excuse her being a bitch, the others had that as well and didn’t do any of all that toxic shit. Seems kinda redundant to have this girl around, writing wise I mean, I know she HAS to be in there because she is the bassist. And Raana…what were they doing with this character man? She is just the token funny kinda random character that’s there just to make the tone a bit more lighthearted when things are becoming too serious or sad. She has no personality nor character arc whatsoever, and she even enters the band just because she wants, and also because she is the best musician of the bunch. The girls of the other band are just kinda there, coming off as bitches with first world problems than anything else, but some other friends and members they come to find at the end seem nice. There’s nothing else to say about them because they will get their own series next year. Visually, anime has come a long way to make CGI that doesn’t look like complete trash and make characters with enough facial expressions to not come off as robots, but is still not that good and the motions are a bit stiff. Luckily the backgrounds were very good, so it gets a bit of an extra point for that. The sound effects and music do their job just fine. I don’t find the themes impressive in the least, especially after listening to them outside of the anime, because I don’t fancy much talking in the middle of a song, and the lyrics come off as first world teen girl problems. But as background music for the anime and used narratively as forms of expression for the characters, they are fine, and that includes the opening and ending. As for the voice acting…I’m not entirely sure but I think the standard for this subgenre is making the bands themselves act, instead of hiring seiyuus that can sing, or better yet hiring seiyuus and replacing them in the musical parts. As a result, whenever the girls aren’t singing, they are very mediocre at best as far as acting goes. So yeah, there kind of is a story, conflict, dramatic pasts, hardships while forming an indie band from scratch and making it big. That alone, and not becoming a mess all things considered, are enough to consider it a bit more realistic and place it on top of other shows of its kind, which presents the same thing in a very unrealistic and idealized manner. But it is also nowhere near great for any particular reason. I’d like to add that after this series I went on to watch the other kind of dramatic entry in the franchise, the Roselia movies, so I will cover them shortly. Visuals and sound left the same impressions in me as this title, although I preferred the themes of that other band because MyGO!!!!! has a bit more typical jpop style, while Roselia leans more towards rock with a bit of gothic vibes in them, which I prefer by a lot. I still don’t like that there are many voices singing at the same time, as they feel like pop idol groups to me, and I don’t like them one bit, and the themes themselves aren’t as good on their own as they are for background music (I’m listening to their singles as I write this), but they’re overall fine. With that said, Komori is a far better singer than the one of Roselia, very noticeable on a a capella scene near the end of the first movie, if I remember correctly. The main issue about these movies is that they’re like two and a half hours long combined. They should either be longer or a proper series, as they are, the first one is very rushed, making events, character interactions and changes, drama, conflicts and the band progressing, to come and go very fast and not being believable and convincing, thus it deserves a below average score. By the second one, all of that was over, and it was shorter and just about the characters introspecting a bit and defining their goals and motivations before they make some new songs and get what they wanted at the end, so it was ok and better. The characters weren’t as interesting as the ones from MyGO!!!!! but they’re fine. So yeah, the first movie was bad, the second one wasn’t and improved the characters, making an overall watchable whole. I considered the two more serious and dramatic BanG Dream to be watchable and a step up from other similar titles that I could barely stand, if at all, and will try to watch Ave Mujica next year.
