When mundane office worker Kiyoshi Adachi turns 30 years old, he discovers that he has gained the ability to read minds due simply to remaining a virgin for his entire life. The caveat, however, is that he must make physical contact with a person to know what they are thinking about. Adachi believes there is no real use for this power until he accidentally hears the thoughts of his coworker, Yuuichi Kurosawa. Charismatic and dependable, Kurosawa is the star of Adachi's team at work, earning praise and admiration from everyone at the office. But deep within, Kurosawa harbors an intense one-sided crush for the gloomy Adachi—a fact that Adachi only learns because of his ability, and knowledge he tries to respectfully disregard. As Kurosawa treats Adachi with kindness and affection he has never experienced before, Adachi finds it increasingly difficult to ignore his coworker's genuine advances. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

This Anime has made me realise, how great it is to be in love. I like how the beginning shows the viewer, the difficulties when you like the same gender. But that didn't stop Adachi. As far as he tried to deny Kurosawa's genuine feelings, in the end he couldn't. The anime conveys their feelings in such a lovely way, you get butterflies from just watching!!! Even the little substory is as realistic as it can be. The way the characters act makes my heart melt. If you need to watch a heart-warming romance anime, that potrays same gender love in their own, joyful way, this anime isfor you! <3
If this premise was slapped on to a straight romance, it would do INSANE numbers here, since mature office romances have been taking off. But na, it's gay and people's interest wanes. It's basically My New Boss is Goofy if they actually leaned on the gay subtext and developed it into a full fledged romance. This anime really belongs in the BL elites, having NO red flags, dubious situations with consent, or weird power dynamics between the characters, which in BL are rooted in gender roles they slap onto the femenine and dominant guy. Both of them have their strengths and weaknesses and constantly leaninto each other to solve the conflicting situations they're put in. We don't have long drawn out arguments or misunderstandings, and they're very assertive in how they deal with them. There's only one main con, but I'm willing to overlook it, and it's that sometimes the animation/drawings are a bit inconsistent, but it's BL so it probably didn't have much budget. But thanks to the stellar voice acting and overall sound design and ambiance, it's still a very immersive experience and I don't think it takes away from my personal enjoyment. Overall, this is one of my favorite romance anime in general, and one of the few ones that gets a satisfactory ending. Very rarely do we get to see anime couples beyond their confession and first kiss, and we get a bunch of their interactions and conflicts past those events. It's just very cute with a healthy dynamic. A feels-good watch and I'll never forget how gushy I felt every week while this aired, just squealing in excitement from all the developments and heartwarming moments. I'd say definitely give this anime a shot if you want a goofy but cute take on the office romance trope.
I watched this show while it was airing weekly and when I tell you this show had me INSANE (in the best way possible) I mean that absolutely unironically. Genuinely had me quaking in my boots. I usually don't have any problems with waiting for episodes weekly but waiting a week for a new episode of THIS show to come out was absolutely torture in it's purest form. While I've seen quite a bit of BL anime by now, this particular series stood out to me as something truly special. A lot of anime with gay couples as the main focus are notorious for eitherhaving really uncomfortable power dynamics bordering on noncon territory, or a ridiculous amount of over the top drama and endless misunderstandings that don't get cleared up until 4 episodes later. Cherry Magic doesn't fall victim to these pitfalls, and instead presents a mostly realistic (if you ignore the whole mind reading aspect, at least) and properly paced love story that doesn't feel forced like a lot of BL series. The main couple especially is a lot of fun; Adachi and Kurosawa have this very endearing kind of chemistry that's super entertaining to watch. The side couple, Tsuge and Minato, are also very charming, and although they aren't the main focus of the story, they still get a considerable amount of screentime for their relationship to feel natural and well-developed. My one and only gripe with the series is that the animation isn't the best. It's pretty wonky often and the characters tend to look offmodel in certain scenes, especially when drawn from further away, but the series does know exactly when to use their budget. While the iffy animation was noticable at times, it wasn't distracting enough for me to take away from the enjoyment I got out of this series. All in all it was just so good to finally have an anime adaptation of a completely unproblematic BL. It's a breath of fresh air in the genre and an absolute must-watch if you're a fan of LGBT series!
I love myself a bit of 'opposites attract' so naturally I was quite drawn to this. If you're into that sort of thing then Cherry Magic is totally worth your time. The back of the manga literally says something like 'Clean-cut hottie x Virgin with self-esteem issues.' How much more 'opposites attract' can you get?! Also, the side ship follows the same formula: Cute younger, extroverted dancer with bleached hair x introverted, older, tall, dark-haired, glasses-wearing author?! Yes, please :>. Also, from what I've read of the manga so far, IMO this is a pretty good faithful adaptation with some thoughtful, well-placed anime-only additions. Overall, the entire cast and premise are fun to be with. A great watch for all fujoshi, fundanshi, and fujins alike! I also really appreciate a good story about finding love a little later in life. Workplace romances in anime generally aren't the best, so this felt like a breath of fresh air. A big theme in the latter half of this show is communication in building a relationship, and it's generally executed well. Of course, it wouldn't be anime without a few instances of grown adults communicating like teenagers, but overall, I liked it, and there wasn't anything that severely messed with my viewing experience. Overall, the premise is interesting and well-explored! Animation has its highs and lows (trust me when I say this. The highs are SUPER high, but the lows are disappointing). A lot of the budget was clearly spent on the beginning of the series and the important scenes involving Adachi and Kurosawa. Sometimes the characters can look a little stiff and facial proportions can be inconsistent, but it didn't take anything away from the series for me as I was pretty invested. It did hinder my enjoyment but ONLY A LITTLE! Also the art style is very nice and appealing! I love their lashes lol. I've never written a review, but I just had to because this series has been such a great run! Hearing the first note of that intro every week has brought me so much joy. Disappointed that there will likely be no season 2, but hey! That's what the manga's for, right?! Overall, a good series; the first half is a bit better than the second if you ask me, but that's for you to decide... Thank you to the studio for bringing this series to anime. :> hope all the hardworking people who gave us this's pillows are nice and cool for forever and ever.
The main character, Adachi gained the ability to read minds on his 30th birthday due to still being a virgin (it sounds weird, but it's actually good just give it a chance) and when he bumps into his coworker, Kurosawa, he hears all the things he has been thinking about him and his feelings for him are revealed, of course Kurosawa doesn't figure out about his powers till later in the anime. There's another side couple Tsuge and Minato, Tsuge is a romance author and Minato is a dancer looking to go pro but working part-time with a delivery company and that's how they meet. They bond over the fact that Tsuge took in a lost cat Minato had been previously seeing on the streets. Their romance does pick up but not much is overall shown so don't get too invested in the two, seeing a spinoff with these two would honestly be great to see kinda like Sasaki and Miyano did with Hirano and Kagiura. Cherry Magic was overall pretty good, it's very wholesome and goofy at the same time since Adachi can hear alllllll of Kurosawa's thoughts and I mean all. In the beginning, the pacing is a bit slow, but things gradually pick up fast, especially in the last 2 episodes, things go by very, very fast, but honestly I think it was very well written. I would definitely recommend it overall especially if you are just getting into the romance/BL aspect of anime. It has a very happy ending where everyone is happy. The only reason I gave it a 9 instead of a 10 was because I wish we got to see more of Tsuge and Minato and I wish it was just a little longer, 12 episodes are always nice, but the end went by so fast I wish we got to see more of their relationship after the ending.
This is a beautiful BL romance anime with a happily ever after. There are no bad episodes and the characters are well rounded. I usually dislike the ‘dumb hardworking FL’ trope and thought I would hate it in this as well even though the lead is Male. I have to say I am pleasantly surprised that they develop the character so well - starts out being under confident, but realises true potential because of his partner and becomes a better person - emotionally and in his career. It’s beautifully put together. The only reason to not rate it a perfect 10 is because of theanimation. It feels a bit clunky and isn’t smooth. Otherwise, beautiful story through and through. Highly recommend watching it if you’re interested in romance HEA genre.
I don't usually write reviews for things I love but this show touched me. It did romance so perfectly that I have to let it out. It has wonderful pacing and shows a realistic and beautiful romance, conflicts and all. For such a silly premise the writers did a wonderful job. The couple are really fun to root for. I laughed, smiled and cried with the characters. It showed the joy of falling in love, portrayed in such a realistic and beautiful way that I yearned for that experience again myself. I loved how about half of the anime was them being together, very much anice change of pace from most romance animes. Plus, oh my goodness they were able to put sexual intimacy in it in a way that felt like a real extension of love rather than fan service. I feel like that is rare nowadays, despite being so much better in my opinion. The conflicts aren't upsetting and don't last long, making this show very easy to watch. They don't rely on the miscommunication trope to advance the plot, which is refreshing. Plus, they avoided anything nonconsensual which unfortunately I've found is all too common in wlw and mlm animes. I am pissed off that is not the bare minimum but it's such a relief to see. Also, it isn't queerbaiting. This shit is very much gay and clear about it. I'd encourage anyone looking for a comfy romance to give this a watch, it's awesome <3
ngl i was super excited for this anime & while i think the anime is a solid 7-7/5 out of 10, I feel like my expectations were super high and was not really met. Having said that, I still enjoyed the lovey-dovey couples & i have to say the 2ndlove story that was happening as far more interesting to me - it had a diverse dynamic that I would have loved to be invested in more. All in all, the ending was suuuppper cute & wholesome & I love that - that really is what has me squealing & loved that this is a fullcomplete show in 12 eps - i don't remember the last time we had that lol. overall a 100% recommend.
Yes, yes, this anime does have its fluffy, lovey-dovey couples, no problematic content, whatever. Not that it needs to be barren of problematic content to be considered a good story. Anyways, I personally enjoyed this anime for a few reasons, but it's not without its problems. Let's just put it up front that I'd give 10 stars for one particular supporting character who was an absolute riot throughout the series. They're the very embodiment of 'don't judge a book by its cover', which makes every interaction with Adachi absolutely hilarious to watch. So there's your comedy. One part of the story that might not have beendiscussed in other reviews is how the anime slowly takes the concept of mind-reading and flips it on its head. Cherry Magic slowly deconstructs this super-power, revealing its pitfalls through the eyes of the characters. Honestly, if it had been just the beginning, this anime would have received a much lower rating from me, but I really like the problems that came along with the second half. It was a unique take on a hackneyed cliche. That's not to say this anime is without its problems. We're given one couple in the beginning of the series, but somehow end up with two by the end. It's a very 'Junjou Romantica' approach, but unlike Junjou Romantica, which gives each of the three couples similar amounts of screen time (more or less), it's more like a 3:1 ratio between the first couple and the second. The transitions between the couples takes a hit, too, and while the main couple gets away with it by the skin of its teeth, the side couple takes a hit for it. Its much easier to forget Tsuge and Minato than Adachi and Kurosawa. Tsuge has been both Adachi's support as well as the lead of his own romance, but Minato leaves much to be desired. There's also a lot of cringeworthy moments in the anime, both having to do with mind-reading powers and just the natural 'non-normie' charm of Tsuge and Adachi. And then there's the animation, which, along with the telepathic scenes, was the most cringeworthy part of it all. For every significant thought the characters have, the viewers are unfortunate enough to have to sit through 15-30 seconds of stilled frames as we listen to whatever character think whatever life-changing thought they're having and how it impacts Adachi (or Tsuge). If this happened every so often it wouldn't be a problem, but it happens every. Single. Episode. It's awkward, and it takes the enjoyment away. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks so. It's with these praises and complaints in mind that I can't fully recommend it, but still say that I enjoyed it very much. There's no such thing as a 'perfect' anime, sure, but the problems really do weigh a lot on the viewers enjoyment of the anime, and should definitely be taken into consideration when deciding whether to watch it.
This is literally the happiest anime I've watched in a long time, I'm still shocked at how the last episode ended (I really wasn't expecting it to have such a happy ending). The anime is fluffy, the moments when Adachi reads Kurosawa's thoughts are always give me secondhand embarrassment, but it's with Adachi's power that the anime manages to show the part of failed communication and how insecure he feels. Despite talking so well about the subjects it addresses, it's a very simple story in itself, with a plot that I can't even tell if it really is a plot, the development focuses only onAdachi and his "boring" appearance is very romanticized (in quotes because he's always drawn beautifully).
Recommend watching this when life is hard and you feel too old to experience life. The fluff and un-promblematic misunderstandings are the perfect medicine. It doesn't give anything new to the genre but EVERYONE IS OF AGE?? YEY! Highly recommend watching with the dub while drawing or doing crafts. The dub is peak funny and you don't need much brain power. Animation is sometimes pretty and sometimes peak anime poop/crack material, if you make edits please please please make one of this. I found this anime via one YT edit which really sparked my interest on the dub. Also I feel like the voices match better in thedub one? Crazy.
A sweet love story with a small supernatural twist. I expected more supernatural elements with Cherry Magic, but it's really just the mind reading. Everything else about the anime is slice-of-life, which I personally enjoy--there's something fun about average life events with little magic embellishments. Adachi is relatable with the way he uses his powers. I also really like that it was shown how his powers have disadvantages. Kurosawa is an interesting character himself purely based on the fact that the two different sides of him are shown so well. I almost wish Adachi read his mind more often! The side pairing is decent toothough there isn't as much magic in their relationship. I appreciate that there were no uses of the stereotypical BL tropes and that the relationships were treated with respect. The ending is so sweet it actually caught me off guard; I wasn't expecting it! There is a fujoshi character but she's respectful (so much as she can be) and clearly meant as a viewer-insert / joke character. She doesn't hog any screentime nor does she cause any issues or meddle where she shouldn't. Ultimately, Cherry Magic is a sweet romance anime with minor magical elements. I'd recommend this to anyone who is looking for a BL story with adult characters and doesn't mind a little fantasy.
How can you not love this joyous piece of work? The animation may be lacking, but that didn’t take away from the pure joy I felt watching this series. I absolutely love how it has a shoujo-like feel—warm, bubbly, and overwhelmingly heartwarming. It’s so refreshing not to be reminded by a BL of how terrible homophobia can be. While I’m not saying that no one should ever depict homophobia in BL (in fact, some of my favorite manga depict the impact homophobia can have on lgbtq+ individuals), I’m happy that, for once, we get a simple happy romance story, just like straight people do all thetime. It’s also so nice to see two men realizing that communication is crucial to building a closer, more authentic connection. Some of y’all need that reminder. If you didn’t enjoy this series, you’re lying and homophobic !
I'll be very quick, as honestly, there isn't a lot to say here... Do you like BL? Great! Does the title intrigue you or make you laugh? Good! If the plot and ideas interest you, then you'll get what it says on the box! Don't expect anything incredible, but in the world of BL, this is nice! The biggest takeaways from this specific BL production are: A) Characters are not mocked for their perceived "shortcomings," B) Consent is respected Beyond that, this isn't anything overly special, but it's a quaint little story about two adult men forming a romantic relationship. And that's basically all thereis. At times, the background art is gorgeous. And, at times, the character animation is off-model and quite rough. The first half is strong, although there's not near enough characterization or romance between the two leads to really justify any fanfare. And the ending is rushed. VERY rushed. Still, all-in-all, it's cute, inoffensive, and a wonderful step in the right direction for BL stories!
I'm male, watched it with my sister who loves Yaoi and Shounen ai. She said it is one of the best yaoi/shounen ai series out here, she really liked it and she watched almost every Yaoi anime in existence and read almost every Yaoi manga. What do I find good about it myself? Well, it's funny, I laughed in some episodes. Also, it has good emotional tension and not bad story writing overall. I liked the side story more than the main story, in my opinion, it's better, but I'm not the casual Yaoi watcher. In some parts, it was really hard to watch as aman, but my sister laughed her ass off at my reactions, so it was funny even for me.
This was one of my favorite anime of its cour. The protagonists were both so relatable. They had their own anxieties and hopes. Adachi's journey towards acceptance rang very true to life even with the magical ability to read minds. I really liked that it was not easy but it was not overly melodramatic either. I think that I would have rated this anime even higher except the secondary couple needed so much work. Their story felt like a kind of after thought and it needed a bit more fleshing out to be satisfying. I wish the effort that went into the main couple hadalso gone into the secondary couple to iron out the hiccups. If you enjoy work place romance, and some slice of life nonsense with a sprinkle of fantasy, then you will enjoy this anime. If you aren't into slash and don't have the patience for a weaker secondary couple then you might not.
Overall very cute anime, wouldn't say it does anything to stand out though, even with its interesting and funny set-up. Characters are fine, but only a couple of them feel like they have any depth whatsoever, the main character and his friend are the only ones that you feel more attached to through the story. Soundtrack is not memorable, some episodes use it well and enhance scenes with simple tracks, while other episodes have a loop going for way too long creating a feeling of staleness to these moments. The actual problem with this show is its inconsistency, some episodes have really good animation with good pacing andstoryboarding, but the next one could have some monstrosities which take you out of the story completely and these episodes feel actually bad to watch. Can be a fun watch for fans of the genre, just don't get demotivated with how some episodes go.
It feels like a cliché, looks like a cliché, but its cuteness and interesting characters make it unique. This anime is the romance you need when you need mental and emotional healing. I can't say it's life-changing, but some stuff that the characters say and do definitely helped me change my life (weird where you can get determination from, uh). After so many BLs out there that always have some problematic stuff or take weird turns, this one will keep you entertained while giving you an emotional experience. Both couples get their happy ending, which is satisfactory to watch. My only problem with it is that the art stylelooks kind of weird, like the characters have some exaggerated features. But it definitely doesn't change how good the experience is.
Watch literally anything else or just read the manga, because this adaptation provides nothing and the original can't be worse. This anime is so mediocre and empty that there's not even ridiculous offensiveness to laugh at, it's just bad. If you remove all the tired (and slightly creepy) cliches, which half the time don't contribute ANYTHING to the story (like the random fujoshi), there's nothing but a slideshow. The whole thing feels and looks like baby's first fanfic edit of a manga. The story itself is uninspired and most of the show drags its feet while simultaneously pulling relationship milestones out of nowhere. The main charactershave more chemistry with random side characters until the very final episodes where they go from 10 to a 100. The focus on the secondary couple is also inconsistent and just gets cut off by the show ending without a proper resolution, as the final episode montages the main couples future. Every episode there is random "personal turmoil" making the MCs spiral dramatically only to be resolved within a minute and the way the relationships develop makes a romance between the viewer and their bed seem more plausible and fleshed out. This is also one of the worst works of animation I've seen. Most of the show is just still panning frames and similar budget techniques without any love for the medium while the character models have no consistency even between scenes. The designs also suffer from the weird stylisation the genre is filled with. The VA is also nothing but anime tropes, which sound 10x worse in English, some voice choices being laughably different.
