A comedy anime about gender dynamics that goes nowhere. This anime started out interesting, a fairly new concept introduced to the new romcom anime genre. All characters are quirky, other than the boring male lead. While each episode is dedicated to exploring the relationships growing between the three female characters and male characters, their relationships do not go further and hit a ceiling. Of three relationships, the one between Kohaku and Hagi is the most insufferable, Hagi is a terribly pathetic written character and his awkwardness is neither funny nor enticing, it’s for the most part, aggravating. I dislike it anytime he’s on screen. Asagisgolden retriever energy is very funny and his relationship with Fuji is both hilarious and wholesome. Suo is also a very enticing female lead and is the most charismatic person in this anime, however her goal to win over the male lead Tokiwa is very unrewarding because Tokiwa is a very bland lead and says nothing but generic things. This anime had a lot of potential, however it fails to deliver anything rewarding. I don’t hate it, but I can’t say I can recommend it either. Watch at your own risk.
this a a romance comedy where three guys go to a college mixer and find not three girls but three girl cross-dressed as handsome men as the three girls work at a drag bar that employs female staff to cross dress to wait on a mainly female customer base. the three guys and the three cross dressed girl get along and the three guys find themselves at the drag bar often. there is no drama for the most part no love triangles or anything like that the three couples if you can call them that as none seem to be officially dating are Sou the crossdressing princethat goes to college dress as a man as she often work right after school and is given the school prince treatment by a group of female fans is paired up with Tokiwa you average college student Kohaku placed the arrogant type when cross dress is pair up with Hagi another average college student finally the cross dress Fuji that a male kuudere and drag bar bartender/ B.L. manga author is paired up the adorkable and innocence Asagi in short if you like romantic comedies with ensemble cast or multiple couples than maybe this is worth a watch note the female characters spend 80% of the time cross dressed so it that too close to Yaoi for you maybe give this one a pass
I liked the idea of this show, at least what I thought the idea was: a romance where the girls are tomboys. Tomboys rule and aren't usually very well represented, so I thought it could be fun. Instead what I got was a bunch of tropes and repeated jokes for 12 episodes straight, but now they're "crossdressing themed". This show accentuates by a lot the problems I have with anime not accepting gay people in our society as something normal. There are ENTIRE EPISODES dedicated to Hagi (this show's most annoying character) just worried if he's gay because he's attracted to a women who cross dresses. He'ssuch a good example of how anime thinks how funny a dude being gay is. Besides all that this is just one more painfully generic show that does not even try to explore characters besides seeing them in slice of life, and for a slice of life show, there are a whole lot better you can do. Also the show has a non-ending, literally just stops in the middle, and I have my doubts about the existence of a season 2
The initial premise of this anime promised a lot, and the promises were kept. There are 3 delightfully different pairings, so there is something for everyone, with vastly different pacing. The mystery about the true identity of the female main characters was cleared pretty quickly, but that wasn't all that bad. Sure, some moments or characters from this show can be annoying at times, but rhat doesn't make them less endearing. The show makes great use of miscommunication and misunderstandings for comedic purposes and clears them up pretty quickly, which avoids the oh so typical frustration from many RomComs. The ending of this season left things pretty open, and offersa great starting point for a season 2, and I really hope that there will be a second season
So I recently finished this anime and I have to say it started out strong! I watched it week to week and then eventually it fell off because the story just didnt really go anywhere. Now is it a week to week watch? No. But I could see this anime being a fun binge watch if you are looking for something with extremely low stakes with not much character progression. Now I will admit the romance elements between the 3 main male and female characters is cute but it doesn't really progress much in the anime other than light teasing. Its simple and that's goodenough for me! It had a very interesting premise about gender roles that was also very unique. It wasn't forceful nor cliche which I have to give it props for. I would have loved to see them speed run some of these episodes as it was extremely slow and I hear it is that way in the manga as well so here's to hoping the MCs EVER get together! It was an average rom com BL? That you could watch in your free time but if you decided to skip it I wouldn't blame you either!
While most of the anime was enjoyable, the story unique, and more or less fun to watch, one of the protagonists is absolutely frustrating. His indecisiveness and how he deals with his problems are downright childish. While the other 2 male protagonists seem to grow, however painfully slow, into their relationships, Hagi behaves like a child on the playground, not facing his emotions and playing this roundabout game in his head. It was extremely frustrating to watch and even less to understand his decisions and/or character motivations. I hate how he was written and it takes away from the entire feelgood element of the anime. This wasgoing to be an 8/10 until the last episode made me have an extreme distaste for Hagi's limp-wristed character.
A romance that plays with perspectives. Goukon ni ittara was one of those animes that I didn't expect anything from but it ended up being one of my comfort anime of the season. The premise is more than interesting, the idea of playing with protagonists who do crossdressing is very fun to watch. It's interesting how they play with the perspective of third parties within the anime. The viewer has all the information and context that the three couples formed are between men and women, but for the world within the anime they are seeing three couples made up of only men. This lends itself tomisinterpretations, confusions or situations that end up being funny because of how the world reacts to a couple of boys. The anime handles three couples and initially this was a concern because I thought they weren't going to have enough space to develop them equally. I couldn't be more wrong and it's not only that it plays with perspectives, but it also plays with the pace of love development. Each couple has its own pace and if you're a fan of romance you can choose your favorite archetype and support that couple. We have the couple that develops at the speed of light, with an organic chemistry from the beginning that even feels natural that at some point one sleeps at the other's house. Another couple is the typical "more than friends, less than a couple", the one that lives in an ambiguous territory but still flirts with each other and advances at a firm and constant pace. Finally, for the fans of classic romance, we have the super dense and slow couple that develops at the speed of the production of the 2nd season of No Game No Life. This couple is one of those that would need 4 seasons, 2 movies and 8 OVAs to even hold hands. A negative aspect of the work would be the character/artistic design of the anime. They feel like simple designs, nothing detailed, despite the fact that the story wants to sell you the girls disguised as boys like Adonis, they really have nothing attractive. It is an anime that shines more for comedy than for the story. At some point you feel like the story is getting bogged down because it focuses too much time on one couple, you guessed it, the dense couple. There are episodes where you wish you could see the other couples progress, but the anime gets bogged down in trying to move the ones that are left behind forward. If you're in the mood to watch a little-known romantic comedy, this is your chance. The fact that it's not very famous makes it more enjoyable to watch since very few people can ruin the experience for you.
At first I believed that the 3 male protagonists would be fake protagonists to start the story, which I was really wrong about. I'm not used to watching anime with a crossdressing theme and I don't have a good experience with the last one I saw, but I decided to give this one a chance and it was worth giving it a chance. In the trio of protagonists, we have the leader, the virgin and the mule, and in the other trio, we have the leader, the lazy one and the disconnected one. The energy between the couples works well and there are several funnyand clueless moments, but the Hagi/Kohaku couple is too convoluted, which makes the rhythm of the anime break at times and ends up making you want to go into the anime and punch Hagi in the face. The animation is satisfactory and they use a lot of caricature, which is standard for comedy anime. If you have some free time to watch something a little out of the ordinary, it might be interesting to watch.
The female cast are a fun bunch who carry the show with their crossdressing characters however outside of Fuji, their actual selves that are hinted or slightly shown lack exploration or showcase and resort to just being the crossdressed character. Regarding the male cast, only Asagi is entertaining with his golden retriever personality. Tokiwa is your basic meh romcom protagonist with a basic personality. Hagi on the other hand had potential to be a voice for the feelings & struggle one could have in his romantic situation and while that occurs it's played off for laughs and is overshadowed and washed away by the use ofthe overreaction screaming gag that makes his scenes an annoyance more than anything else to the detriment of Kohaku his love interest. There are wholesome & solid moments with the cast but the romance aspect stagnates and it becomes a hang out anime rather than one about romance. I personally found the comedy best during the Chibi animation swap segments and that the standard animation lacked a lot of movement or variety. Overall it was fun & wholesome but ended up as a hang out anime that was carried by the FMC's and the crossdressing.
This was overall a fun show. It was a newer concept and it deals with tomboys (more or less) so what's there to hate. Story: The concept and plot are nothing groundbreaking but it's something new to the usual romcom norm so there's that to get your interest. It does a good job spreading the time between the 3 couples and doesn't really favor one more than the other even though you get mc/fmc vibes from two of them. One couple you'll wish they had more time and another less which you'll find out by watching. I will say it felt like it was dragging ondoing the same thing close to the end but they actually do have more progress so have patience. Sound: Nothing stands out but it fits the bill so no complaints Art: It's good and the mc's/fmc's are drawn well but it is more on the low-budget side with low animated movements and the background characters but they play it off well. Characters: Hagi really makes it hard to watch, especially near the end of the season, it goes back to that dragging on sensation where it is just repeating what they've been doing the last few episodes but they tie it up pretty well at the last episode. Suou and Tokiwa you wish were moving faster but this show is that slow romance type. Each character has a different trope which will make you like them or start getting annoyed asking yourself why are they like this. Enjoyment: If you like romance this is a show that you get you grinning but also make you want to slap em for being dumb or slow but it really is a hidden gem that I say give it a shot. Overall: Do give it a chance if you think it fits the bill. I don't believe it will get a second season so do keep that in mind but that is just mine opinion and I'd be happy to be wrong. Some parts are more like a 6-7/10 but overall I give it an 8, something you might come back to watch with someone else or if another season came out to re-watch. Sadly I don't expect this show to get a second season but it's a fun watch so I do recommend watching it if you like romcoms.
This show caught my interest from some scenes I saw on Twitter, especially for its comedic side. The first episodes are really cool—the character introductions and plot are really well done. The boys attend a mixer, while the girls are dressed as boys because they work in a host club. Everything revolves around this, with plenty of jokes about it, and they’re honestly really funny (the "Prince at school" that fangirls try to identify, the super cute relationship between Asagi and Fuji, and how innocent he is). The plot is very "fluffy" and cute. The problem for me is one particular character: Hagi. His confusion about hisfeelings could have been interesting if it didn’t drag on for so long. His entire arc is about wondering whether he’s bi/gay because he likes a girl who dresses as a boy. Another issue is how slow the relationships progress (if they even progress at all???). There isn’t a single real confession in the entire anime, and no official couple, even though you can tell from the first episode who is meant to end up with whom. The anime could have been wholesome if these problems were fixed. Also, I think it would have been better for this type of anime to wait for the manga to be completed and adapt everything in one season. That way, the pacing would have been faster, avoiding getting stuck on a character’s story (one I don’t even like) and finally allowing some character development. We’re not even sure if there will be a season 2, since this first season adapted 6 out of 8 volumes. So IF there is a season 2, it will take a loooong time.
It's ok. I watched the English dub (I often watch english dubbed anime while I work) so it may have been different in the original VA work but I found Hagi to be so grating I put down the anime for extended period of time. It was genuinely difficult to finish the last two episodes due to his grating voice and one note, "Oh no, am I bi? Am I gay? Am I cheating?" character trait. Otherwise it's a very pleasant watch and occasionally funny, I love the other two romantic plots with Suou/Tokiwa and Fuji/Asagi. They don't really flounder much with the idea ofdating crossdressing women which I appreciate.
2024 has given us quite a few anime that I would consider to be fun, brain-rot. How I Attended an All-Guy's Mixer might not be as brain-rot as other shows like My Deer Friend Nokotan or ‘Tis Time for “Torture,” Princess, it's overall atmosphere is still goofy enough for me to consider it as such. While this anime doesn't do anything special or unique in terms of rom-coms, I still had a lot of fun watching this, which is important since we've gotten quite a few romance anime this year that absolutely bore me, and that's saying something since romance is one of my favoritegenres in anime. What makes How I Attended an All-Guy's Mixer fun to watch has to be all the goofy interactions and dynamics between all the characters. The six main characters - who are split between the male characters in Tokiwa, Hagi, and Asagi, and the cross-dressing girls with Suou, Kohaku, and Fuji - aren't that interesting of characters, especially when they fall into a lot of very common and tired rom-com tropes. However, these characters really make this show enjoyable when they're just hanging out and doing dumb shit for the sake of it. It's fun watching an airhead like Asagi misunderstand the context behind whatever unhinged shit Fuji is making him do. Hagi and Kohaku's fun and adorable romantic progression with one another breathes a ton of light-hearted charm to this series, and the typical shy interactions they have with one another made me feel at home with the genres this anime falls under. Unfortunately, I wasn't too impressed with Tokiwa and Suou's dynamic. To me, their relationship felt the most bland and generic out of the trio of couples that this anime offers. I'm struggling to even find the words to describe the dynamic between these two because they're unfortunately the most forgettable parts of the show. That's not to say that the writing behind these two are appalling, it's more so that if these two ever got a series revolving around just those characters, I'm not sure if I'd be invested in their narratives. You could attribute that to the fact that this show has six main characters and three couples to focus on, which forces the writing to constantly shift focus on a set of characters so they're not left in the dark. I personally didn't mind it, but I can see it being an issue for other people watching this anime. Overall, if you need a quick, easy, and fun comedy anime to turn your brain off to, How I Attended an All-Guy’s Mixer might be for you. I personally enjoy shorter anime like this every now and then, and it’s kinda the perfect type of anime to wind your long day down with.
This might be the biggest surprise of an anime for a very long time. How I attended an All-Guy's Mixer is not the kind of anime you'd probably think it turns out to be. An extremely wholesome and surprise surprise, absolute zero drama in it. A very enjoyable and also funny anime to watch for you all who enjoy cute but also funny facial expressions and just slow college kind of life, with a little bit of alcohol mixed in. I went in blindly, thinking maybe like you, that this would be the typical rom-com with a stupid love-drama kind of like situations we've gotten toknow for the last decade when it comes to rom-coms. Those cringe series can go straight to the trash can 'cause this one has arised and has zero drama in it, and I absolutely loved this. The facial expressions, which happens very often, the smooth talks and hidden flirts here and there, you'll realize that suddenly the episode is over. One character has trouble settling his heart while one other is just the same and a third is, kind of like a child inside of a college student. Animation wise, I have no idea what you'd call this kind of animation. There are different facial expressions where they basically are missing a mouth or just kind of like having a plain "durr" kind of like face, and I loved it. Of course it's not a flash game animation but still smooth and rich and full of colour. Sound wise, I enjoyed both the opening and ending but also the characters voices were smooth with no irritating voice acting where it's high pitched and screams. There are some screams here though, but not loud ones and not the kind you'd cover your ears for. It's a male version of a "kyaaa" scream we can hear in some later episodes which makes this entire thing even more funnier than your regular rom-com. The opening is quite good but the ending though could get a little more work in. Overall, a very big surprise of an anime for me. Comedy wise and story wise, I truly enjoyed this series. As a person who enjoyes comedy anime with funny, cute facial expressions, this one has them all and I am very happy that I didn't skip this and I hope you won't either. Definetively a rewatch anime when there's nothing else going on and you have a lot of time and want to watch something you can smile to. Score wise, a solid 9/10 kind of like series which is funny, wholesome and somehow, yes, can even melt your heart a little bit. I for once, truly hope for more seasons of this series.
The development of the relationship between three couples, with the difference that the female characters work in a drag bar. The beginning of the anime is promising, but a change occurs during the story. It becomes less attractive, since there is no concrete conclusion, as if there were going to be a new season. The couples are well introduced and their intimacy occurs at different speeds. One is faster, very light and natural (I really liked it), Fuji and Asagi; in the second, the girl has more initiative and the boy is slower, but both accept each other's flirting well; Suo and Tokiwa; and thethird is a bit slow, almost stopping; the boy is boring and full of doubts that make it uncomfortable to watch; and the girl is a bit slow, but not like him, who goes into existential crises and unnecessary doubts, which is Kohaku and Hagi. I recommended it to a friend to watch before I saw the ending myself. Now that I know there is no set ending, I don't know if I would recommend it to anyone. But it's quick and entertaining for a while.
'How I Attended an All-Guy's Mixer' is an anime that I did not like, as I am not the target audience, but I can imagine it being so good and so funny to the right audience. § Overview Tokiwa gets invited by his female classmate, Suo, to a mixer. But when he and his two other friends get there, they are greeted by what seemed to be three handsome young men. Actually, the three 'guys' are actually Suo and her two female colleagues, crossdressing as guys. This is the start of an awkward romance. § Notes1. Some have dubbed this as the straightest gay anime and simultaneously the gayest straight anime. I don't blame them because the girls crossdressing as guys are so convincing that I felt so much discomfort at the outset, a level of discomfort that I did not have with 'Sempai no Otokonoko.' But once you're a few episodes in, the level of discomfort goes away. 2. Much of the humour involves these guys overreacting to what these girls dressed as guys do. Some will like it. I don't. Actually, I don't mind the cross-dressing. I'm neutral to Kohaku and Fuji, but I really like Suou. These girls carry the show, and arguably Suou is bearing the bulk of that weight. Dressed as a guy, Suou is so handsome and so charismatic that so many girls call her 'The Prince.' Chances are, if she is on screen, the scene would be good. Her character design is so distinctive that she resembles LeLouch vi Britannia. Thus, she is the main attraction. 3. Personally, I hate these boys. They are absolute chodes and are so much cringe. I can forgive this as comedy, and there are tons of examples where they tend to overreact. They are so insufferable. These chodes are the type of guys that a self-respecting man would strive not to become. 4. It's pretty much a slice of life. There's no overarching plot. Just these guys hanging out. There's some development in their relationship, but such development doesn't feel major. 5. Animation is pretty much average. 6. The OP and ED are a bit catchy. § Conclusion Don't mind my low score and mixed feelings. I'm not the target audience. It's a bit okay for a comedy. I love Suou but hate the chodes in this anime. NOTA BENE: A grade of 3 out of 10 means that I did not enjoy watching this anime despite being either well-regarded or at least popular, or perhaps I happened to rank them below my 4's.
