Yuuri Mito is a typical, normal Japanese teenager. He goes to school, works on people's motorcycles and performs exorcisms. Okay, that last part's a little bit unusual, but his family lives in a shrine and they do that sort of thing. Still, you would think he'd know enough to be careful with an ancient relic he finds in the woods, especially when a mysterious goddess appears and tells him to leave it alone. Unfortunately, despite Mito's best efforts, the seal gets broken anyway and a number of dangerous "tayuti" that it held in stasis get loose. This is bad. Mito also ends up with a beautiful goddess girl who decides that she's going to marry him. This might not be so bad. if he wasn't already caught up in the middle of a war between the entities he's released. The flesh may be weak but the spirit's more than willing to compensate.

Tayutama is a cute little action romance that won’t dazzle you with complicated characters and plot but still manages to be an enjoyable watch. I should say first off if you don’t like your anime with a healthy serving of moe and ultra cute artwork, then you can just stop reading now and not even bother with this series. I liken it to eating cotton candy, while it appeared filling when you stuck it in your mouth in the end it’s not very filling. But it tastes good! The overall plot is the weakest link in Tayutama. The series starts withspirits known as Tayutai, being released accidently into the world along with three very powerful evil spirits and the reborn goddess Kikurami who becomes known to the world as Mashiro. The male lead Yuuri's family runs the shrine dedicated to this goddess and is the descendant of the person who helped seal the three evil spirits with the goddess many centuries before. While I did find the initial premise to be interesting it doesn’t do a very good job in explaining them or any of the other developments that unfold as the series progresses. Way too often things are left unknown or lightly touched on as it moves from episode to episode. You start off expecting this great battle between the three and Mashiro and Yuuri but it never really materializes. It’s not terribly original and it has plot elements that frankly have been done to death in anime. But it doesn’t unfold the way most of those series do in regards to the romantic elements and that alone allowed me to enjoy it quite a lot.
The characters are solid but unspectacular. Mashiro is very cute and moe and is a likeable character. While she does manage to grow some as a character over the course of the series she really doesn’t get a lot of background depth and pretty much manages to stay within the male fantasy of the perfect obedient wife roll. Yuuri is typical of the male lead in anime, not terribly exciting and a bit of a self righteous personality who is a bit to moral in his values to be a real person. Honestly the first guy (of any age really) who would turn down the opportunity to sleep with a girl when she is basically throwing herself at you, is going to be the first. This is one of the strange things about Japan I just don’t get. They have all these bizarre perverse fetishes and echii and yet portray these guys as pillars of morality in an immoral world. It’s pretty tiring. The most interesting character and the one who makes the most growth over the series is Ameri. While her basic archetype has been done many times over as the tsundere best friend who can’t admit her true feelings for the lead, she comes across as sympathetic and a bit tragic. The rest of the supporting characters and the antagonists are pretty uninspired as a whole. We learn very little about them, particularly the pasts and motivations of the villains. What we do find out is very simplistic and disappointing.
The animation was quite well done and the magic combat is very exciting and fun to watch. Character designs are going to be hit or miss with people. I found them to be very cute but others are going to think they are "too cutesy". I can see both points of view. Artistically it reminds me a lot of the art from Shuffle!. The music is definitely the highlight of the program. Both OP/EN songs fit the tone of the series are were very fun to listen to. The cast is made up of largely unknown and relatively new seiyuu. I found this to be very refreshing as it was nice to hear some new voices for a change and their performances were all very good.
In the end, I just don’t understand someone who really hates this series. It was a pleasant little romance adventure story that ended sweetly and kept my attention. Is it an all time classic? Hell no, but it was a fun and entertaining adventure. You could do a lot worse than this.

I kind of disagree with the disappointment of the other reviewers. I followed this thing religiously and it beat out, for me, every other spring 2009 anime I tried. Here's why: it's a moé supernatural romance comedy with a main female lead with fox ears THAT IS ACTUALLY GOOD. And very good it is. Okay, I'll admit, it has some clichés, but they are overshadowed by the expert handling of some of them. What really gets me is that it balances the moé factor with some really deep moments. The art itself is nice and moé, just the way I like it. The characterdesigns are varied and for the most part very, very memorable. Obviously, since Yuuri is the male protagonist in an anime based on a visual novel, he'll be a bit plain, but that's to be expected.
The biggest part of why I liked Tayutama so much was the skillful use of silence and suspense in two-person exchanges. These scenes were orchestrated beautifully. If it weren't for these, though, I may have given Tayutama a 7 or 8, because really, there are some things that could have been improved.
Tayutama is a refreshing anime, if you can call it that. Not overly ecchi, not overly headache-inducing, and it gives you a nice uplifting feeling that might or might not have you considering Shinto just so that you can maybe get a foxgirl out of it.
If anything, watch it for Mashiro's moé factor and Nue's comic relief I guess. It's a nice ride regardless.

Okay, let me start by saying that when I found this anime, I was quite thrilled by some recommendations, and, in fact, even some of my friends liked this. Then I watched it. Ewh. Story: 4 Pretty much mediocre story about usual guy finding an unusual girl with him having childhood girlfriend who loves him. Can this get any more generic? Art: 5 The artwork was okay, not too fancy, not too bad, pretty much usual artwork. Sound: 6 Probably the best aspect of this anime was its soundtrack. Sometimes the uplifing melodies were making you relax, sometimes awkward themes were actually making you feel uncomfortable about the situation, and atsome point somewhat ambient piece was very well used near the final scene.

Despite the fact that this anime had a very good potential, and I actually watched it because I thought something terrible will happen in the end, because Ameri was at times even feeling suicidal, nothing of interest has ever happened. And this main guy... Argh, he's acting so stupid at the times.

The only thing which kept me in this anime was storyline and character development of Ameri, but like I said, the ending has crushed my every hope for anything interesting to happen.

If you want some good plot, don't even think about watching this. If you want some good character involvement with each other or any character development, I'd rather not recommend you this. If you want something with good artwork, this anime does not offer anything like that. But if you like generic and mediocre harems, then this one is just for you.

*Sigh* Another "what could have been" anime. So much potential only to be wasted and forgotten among the many anime's that have failed to stand out and place themselves on a well deserved throne. Not only did it fail to grasp my interest, but it also failed to distinguish itself from other anime's that have succeeded in doing everything Tayutama didn't. Well executed story, plot, and character development. Here are my reasons: STORY: 5 Hardly a story at all. This anime has been wavering from a 4 (BAD) to a 6 (FINE). Almost all of the episodes are consumed about Mashiro and Yuuri fighting the three "strongest". Wellactually it's nothing more but talk about schooling, crap we don't care about, and more crap. Then the parts where he "trains" to begin his destined battle with them. But guess what? When the fights actually come your left thinking "That's fucking it? I've wasted a good 24 minutes just to see a fight scene that only lasted about 3? And the conclusion is (This is a HUGE spoiler) dıɥspuǝıɹℲ!!! WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT?" *Epic Troll Face*

The music sounded similar to Inuyasha's. I know that much for sure. Which isn't bad but it didn't really give it its own music that it could call its own. When I noticed Satoshi Hino (voice for Yuji in Shakugan no Shana and Saito for Zero no Tsukaima) was in this waste of space anime and was performing the voice for our main faggot I thought "Oh Joy! A damn good voice actor is in here so Tayutama must be good enough to be considered awesome and unique right?" WRONG HERP A DERP! Though his skills continue to succeed him, his talent for giving characters life obviously didn't do shit to this dull ass trash. "Hey! I've seen this character before! Kind of reminds me of Saito from Zero no Tsukaima! I wonder WHY???" At least that's what I thought when I heard him. I definitively disliked Mashiro's voice when she was turned into a squeaker. For some reason when she talked like that I wanted to strangle her. She reminded me of all the kids on COD who think their tough shit but are abused at school and home. Then there was Ameri. God she sounded like a dying cat sometimes! She annoyed the shit out of me but looking at her design it suited her just fine.

Now this is where it really matters. How well you "bond" with the characters and how well you "deal" with the loss of one of them. Sadly, I didn't "bond" with any of them. They weren't really given much character to where you could feel a connection with them. Which is what many anime's actually succeed in. "Why should I give a crap if ______ dies?" Or "Why won't he/she just die already!" Or maybe you "NOOOO!! Don't die on me you piece of shit! If you die I'm going to go buttfuck somebody in the ass! Regardless of gender! Do you want that?! *Starts crying* Please don't die! I love you! My life is meaningless if I can't see your fictional face everyday! DAMN YOU JC STAFF!!!" Consequently, none of this occurred when I watched Tayutama. I didn't give a crap if Yuuri popped Mashiro's cherry or vice versa. And I didn't give a crap what happened to any of the other characters either. Mashiro continuously rambling about how she wants coexistence with humans and Tayutai. Ameri being a total pussy for not confronting Yuuri and conversing her feelings to him which are COMPLETELY OBVIOUS BY THE WAY. And then the oblivious dumbshit we all know as Yuuri. I could say so much about him and compare him with many other idiotic characters (I'm looking at you Taketo Akutagawa) but I'm tired of stating the obvious. You'll notice how much you hate the guy after (If really) you finish Tayutama.

The lack of character development dismayed me and the continuous rant of the last "strongest" stating how living with humans is absurd just annoyed me.
They really could have done so much more. At the last episode, at the last part, you can see the potential of an EPIC NEW STORY LINE waiting to be told and redeem its predecessor. They could have given Mashiro more background. They could have shut Ameri's fucking trap and tell her to go smoke a joint. As she is so annoying always talking about being normal and not having to deal with the supernatural. Then they have the audacity to say in the last episode that her "visualization powers" are amazing. When we have no insight whatsoever of what the fuck they are talking about. What power? SHE HAD A POWER? When? Why? NONE of that is answered. You know what else they could have done? *SPOILER KIND OF* ˙no-noH ɥʇıʍ ,,ǝuo ǝɯɐɔǝq,, pıɐs oɹıɥsɐW sɐ puɐ ɹǝʍod ɐ ʇoƃ ǝɥs uǝɥʍ ǝɯ pǝnƃıɹʇuı ʎllɐɔıʇɔɐɹd ʇı 'ʇɥƃıɹ s,ʇɐɥ┴ ˙no-noH ʎq pǝʇɟıƃ sɐʍ ǝɥs ʇɐɥʇ ɹǝʍod s,ɐuıɯn⅄ pǝʌloʌƎ (This "arc" is what saved this anime from being rated bad. And if you want to read the spoiler just Google upside down text and copy and paste it there.) Regrettably, none of this was addressed and properly executed in Tayutama. But there was only one thing that left me half-assed satisfied. I've noticed "fuck" was said x3! Well, it was apparently said in the subs I've read. :D

I thoroughly scanned each episode to make sure I didn't miss anything surprising or exciting. No luck. Just the same bullshit of characters that I have already seen but have been done much better than them. If I were you I would ignore it and move on to better anime's that would really knock you off your seat that is drenched with white stains everywhere. If you are a furry that is hungry for some fur then go watch Wagaya no Oinari-sama. And even if your not, that one is DAMN good. Although there is no romance involved in that one. There are so many choices other than Tayutama that would make you feel you've had enough of moe or whatever the crap your looking for. But if your persistent enough to watch a mediocre anime that will only leave you wanting more then go for it.

What can I say? It does well with sticking to the story. I didn't feel like there was any "filler" crap thrown in (but I might be wrong). I was really rooting for Ameri to possibly do more in terms of her feelings, but it always wound up with her getting hurt and Mashiro getting all the glory. The ending was truly sad though, which is funny since it had me on the verge of tears even though the moments leading up to it I was wishing for what happened, to happen. All in all it was a good story but it didn't have the sortof "harem" feeling that I wanted. It was more of a love triangle, with a bunch of emoness thrown in.

Characters, settings, themes, and voice actors in this series will remind you of other anime. The main character is a slightly more manly version of Keiichi Morrisato from Aa! Megami-sama, he even works on motorcycles for fun and lives in a shrine. Early on he meets a character who looks like a female Inu-yasha, but plays a similar role to Belldandy from Aa! Megami-sama. Another character looks and behaves somewhat like Jingoku Shoujo. There is a character with a likeness to No-Face from Spirited Away, a school that is reminiscent of the school in Hayete no Gotoku (and a distinctive voice actor from thatseries) and the list goes on. I'm pretty sure Lupin III makes a cameo too.
The thing is, I liked all of those anime that influenced this, and quite frankly this one isn't too bad either! If something is poorly replicated, we call it a ripoff. If something is replicated in a way that we like, we call it a tribute or homage.
At first I was a little put off by the likenesses to some of these other anime, but then I got to thinking: sometimes I would like to see what one character would be like in another situation, and that's basically what this anime is. No one character is exactly the same, but there are a lot of similarities, and to be honest it is kind of fun to try to pick them out.
The biggest down side for me is that some of the humor is over-done but also I found myself laughing from time to time, and interested in the story and action. It's only 12 episodes so I say, give it a chance. If it doesn't grab you, skip it. If you like it, tell me what other references to anime you see!

Quickly after watching a few episodes of this anime it reminded me a lot of Omamori Himari. Mashiro with her feline like characteristics, and the fact that she sticks to Yuuri like glue. It is almost the same thing. The feeling that I got from this anime was very light hearted. It had just the right amount of comedy and love situations that balanced everything out. The only thing that I have to say about the artwork was that I thought that Nue in her Tayutai form was kind of weird. i know that she is the weakest ofthe "three strongest" and that she wanted to look big and scary because of that fact, but she just seemed so out of place. To me it felt as if she was an outsider. If you look at all the other little Tayutai, that to me was the image of what they should look like. Since that is what they look like in the first episode.
Other than that, good artwork.
I really like the opening song. A very light hearted song that sets the mood for what you are about to watch. I liked the song to the point that I went an downloaded it. It took me surprisingly long to find a working link, but I think it was worth it in the end.
The variety of characters is decent and changes are made throughout the anime to make the anime more balanced. A fair amount of attention is given to each character so you can understand what is going on. I will admit that I did not know that Hou-ou was based upon a legend. Before when I heard that name I thought of the legendary pokemon Ho-Oh. (I guess you really can learn something new everyday)
Well all that I have to say is that even though the anime is interesting I did often find myself doing other things. (Like looking for the opening song, or watching the latest ep of a different anime that I am watching. ^_^) It's not an anime that will have you glued to your seat. I would suggest to take this anime slowly. Don't watch a lot at once or you might find yourself bored, well at least that's what I did. It might not be the same for you, but hey I am not you.

Tayutama as a whole is your general harem anime, with some twists, and originality thrown in. Whats nice about this show is that its not very complicated which means if you like the harem scenarios you can solely watch and enjoy that aspect of the show. story - 6 its a harem, contained the same cliches as other harems. If one day some beautiful girl suddenly appear in front of you and told you, you have the power to fix the evil released into the world, would you do it?? Well then if you like a simple, cutesy romantic comedy then I recommend this one for you. Here is your typical romantic comedy anime, where you have a average high school boy encounters a sudden appearance of a goddess who came out of nowhere and changed his life. This is a typical harem romantic comedy, there isn't much to say about this piece. We have of course the main lead, Yuuri, like all male characters inharem, all his stats are average, nothing special expect his lineage and he live in a shrine.
Also we have Mashiro, the goddess who randomly shows up, who has the composed, elegent obedient wife. Who does everything with courtesy to other.
Mifuyu, the girl with the most pride and don't really like to rely on others
and of course the classic stock character Ameri, the tsundere childhood friend who isn't true to her feelings
The story is very simplistic, the leads encounters, a brief summary of what need to be done, and we're off. This piece lacks depth and contrast, but i guess that wasn't the main theme of the anime. I think the producers aim what the art work because many of the characters were drawn very cute and nicely, its amazing and some are a hit and miss, (has strong point occasionally). The villains are set halfway between known as evil but turns out to be good. They have no evil intent only a little discomfort of being around humans.
If you are a person who likes romantic comedy and wanted something casual but yet random then this is for you. You won't get hooked but you would like to continue watching. It's a very pleasant anime to watch and sometimes it has it funny points. I couldn't really come to hate this anime but it is a nice change of pace. Give it a try, the artwork is pretty cutely drawn!

il leave you to watch the anime it was a very good anime to but it was missing something. an ending that made sense the characters are well thought out and the story needs more action. overall i give it an 8 out of 10 because it was colour full and has funny moments but if you looking for a romance you came to the wrong place every time the character does something nice it is brutally ruined as well as between each episode it felt like time jumps forward like a week this is not good because if something was happening the episode wouldend and pick-up in a completely differant spot.

Great story just the ending sucked to me. Its a story about a love triangle and to me the ending could have been better. I know some of these anime's end this way I personally don't like them. Over all a good anime to watch.

Tayutama: Kiss on My Deity is your average romance harem anime. I've seen enough of these to tell you that Tayutama isn't anything special, but you should definitely check it out if your a fan of the genre. Story: The story of Tayutama is not something new. Boy works at a shrine, boy attempts to seal away a group of magical beasts known as Tayutai, boy accidentally ends up releasing some of the most powerful Tayutai ever who plan to destroy everything, and a goddess appears to help him and claims she wants to marry him. Ok, maybe this isn't as unoriginal as Imade it sound, but it basically follows the general format for a harem anime. If your watching this hoping to see plenty of action and supernatural fights, well think again. It's true that there are a few fights in Tayutama, but this anime mostly focuses on plot development and story telling. This isn't necessarily a bad thing though, as this is one of the things that Tayutama accomplishes rather well. There may be a few points where you find yourself waiting for something exciting to happen, but most of the time you will be entertained enough.
Art:
The art style used in Tayutama is not the best I have ever seen, but it certainly isn't bad. The colors used are dull (compared to animes such as mashiroiro symphony and Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi) and don't stand out too much from each other, and most of the environments look similar to one another. The actual animation itself, however, is very fluid and sharp. Transitions were smooth, and I had no problem staying focused on what was happening.
Sound:
The instant I heard the opening song for Tayutama I instantly fell in love with it. The upbeat tone of the song fit well with the overall feeling of the anime itself. The ending theme was also very fitting. The songs used in the background throughout the anime were mostly chosen well, but there were a few points where I found myself asking "Why is this song playing?".
Characters:
This is where Tayutama failed to live up to my expectations. Each main character was given a 2-3 episode story arc to cover practically everything about themselves. After their arc was finished though, they were rarely ever mentioned again. They may have shown up in a few scenes every now and again, but mostly it just felt like the writers completely forgot about them. Character development was also a rare find in this anime. Most of the characters remained pretty much the same person as when the anime started. Not that this was always a bad thing, some of the characters had lovable personalities that I enjoyed, but it would have been nice if some of the characters had changed, if even just a little bit. Even with all of my complaining, I will say this though: all of the character models were unique and fit the characters personality well.
Enjoyment:
Despite all of the complaining I may have done, I rather enjoyed watching Tayutama. The plot was not as predictable as I thought it may have been, and surprised at more points than expected. There was enough comedy and romance to keep me entertained, but not enough to make this anime anything truly spectacular.
Overall:
I recommend this anime to anyone who is a fan of the harem/romance genre. For all others, I'm not sure if this anime is right for you, but you never know. It may just surprise you.

This harem anime is quite similar to Omamori Himari. I love the storyline and it had quite a few little surprises that I didn't see coming. I really love most of what this anime has to offer and considering it was made so long ago its still great. usually, I don't check out older animes because I prefer the way modern animes look more however this anime really made me start checking out older animes. I love these types of cute romantic animes as some of the scenes along with the music/setting really almost bring a tear to my eye each time. I love thecharacter design too. That being said I did sometimes find the mc a little bit frustrating at times however a good mc none the less. this anime is quite good and I really recommend it, if you're ever having one of the days where its raining or snowing and you just want to chill and warm up whilst watching a cozy type anime then I definitely recommend this one. Quite good, really entertaining, wish there were more episodes but overall I recommend. Very good Harem Anime
