A mysterious device crashes on planet Earth, causing a wildfire near where Gohan Son, Kuririn, Bulma, and Oolong are camping. Unable to fully save the forest, they decide to use the Dragon Balls to restore it to its previous condition. A few days later, a group of unknown warriors plant a seed where the mysterious device had crashed, sprouting a colossal tree that destroys the forest and neighboring cities in the process. North Kaio contacts Gokuu Son and tells him that this tree is the "Shinseiju"—a tree that absorbs all the nutrients in the planet and leaves it a barren wasteland, all the while growing a mighty fruit capable of providing incredible power to anyone who eats it. After learning of this, Gokuu and his friends try destroying the tree before it is too late, but that may prove to be more difficult than they had previously imagined. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Another Dragon Ball Z movie, another improvement on the ones I've watched before. This makes 4 in a row!!! This one is especially surprisingly - it turned out to be quite a good action anime overall, and not just compared to the other movies of the franchise. As far as fighting anime go, it's certainly not quite as the same level as the Street Fighter 2 animated movie, but still it's pretty good. The action is quite absorbing for once, consisting of more than just ultra fast punching sequences, and the story is actually slightly more sophisticated than the usual "here's a new boss, nowgo get him, Goku" format that I've come to expect from the Dragon Ball Z movies. Unfortunately, given the incompetence of the story board of the franchise, it also means there are more plot holes - you would think it's impossible to have plot holes in a plot that's as thin as this, but they somehow managed it. The ease with which the Eternal Dragon is summoned seems like a bit of a cheat - if they can summon him that easily and get it to grant any wish, surely they can just used it to solve any problem? It's funny how they used it to solve one small problem in their path rather than the root of their problems. Also, the ending... it's kinda hard to be any more specific since it would count as a spoiler, so lets just say the way it ends is pretty ridiculous.
On my quest to watch and review all the Dragon Ball Z films, I'd been feeling pretty good about their quality after watching Dead Zone and The World's Strongest, wondering if they weren't as bad as I thought they'd be. Tree of Might ground that idea to a halt and made me a lot more worried about the quality I'll be expecting in the near future - since this seems to be one of the better regarded ones. Tree of Might features the coming of Turles, a Saiyan warrior who bares a near exact resemblance to our hero Goku, and his planting of a 'Tree ofMight' that'll drain all of the nutrients from the Earth to create a fruit that'll give him the power to rival the universe. Overall, the premise is solid - The Tree of Might's depiction is pretty unnerving, and the scenes of it slowing creeping across and draining the world are pretty tense to watch. I enjoyed the first fifteen minutes or so of the film, since it's rare we get to see our heroes at this point in Dragon Ball Z in a more relaxed setting - the camping trip at the start, and the hunt for the Dragon Balls that follow is a really fun concept. I think there was a little too much of Goku hanging out with his new dragon friend, but it played out pretty well once the fight against Turles started up. Sadly, whilst the first two films had fairly original (if basic) plots, Tree of Might just feels like a new take on the Saiyan Saga, but without literally any of the good parts of it. Saiyan comes to Earth? Check. Powerful leader with weaker goon(s)? Check. Plan to use the Earth for their own gain? Check. The issue is, that literally not one thing outside of their usage of the Tree of Might is remotely as dramatic or interesting as ANYTHING that happens in the Saiyan saga. Whilst I was pretty positive with the last couple of antagonists in the form of Garlic Jr. and Doctor Wheelo, sadly Turles is as massive downgrade from the them. There is literally nothing unique about him, outside of his resemblance of Goku, which is only a part of the character design for shock value; it's literally only brought up twice. He's just overpowering strong for the sake of strong - no one in the film holds a candle to him, even Goku, and it just makes the fights boring to watch as he swats them out of the sky over and over again. The major fights are... okay, at the very best, which isn't a very good thing when this is Dragon Ball Z. Literally no one does anything of use in the entire film outside of Goku - there was literally no reason for Krillan, Tienshen or Yamcha to join in the fight, as I didn't think they land a useful strike all film. Piccolo is marginally useful, and Gohan has the one caveat of having a transformation during the film, which looks spectacular and is probably the highlight of the film. Though, what I feel is the biggest issue of the film is that Goku's victory against Turles feels utterly unearned - he barely scratches Turles before he's tterly defeated, and pretty much snatches a victory for himself and the Earth out of nowhere. And I know this is a thing that happens frequently in Dragon Ball Z, but this one feels so much worse then the others since Turles is basically unharmed. The fights are worth watching for one viewing, but overall none of them stick out in my memory. On a more positive note, this film looks and sounds fantastic - The Tree of Might serves as a fantastic arena for the battles in the film. I'm not as good as noticing great songs in anime, but even I could pick out the pretty uplifting and hype-worthy tracks that played out in the final moments of the film. Animation overall is okay, reaching a highpoint during Gohan's transformation, but overall it didn't have anything that really sticked out overall. It's typical movie quality, but it feels like at this point they weren't quite putting as much effort as the first couple of movies. I think Tree of Might is good enough to warrant one watch through, but even for Dragon Ball Z fans I feel this ones a slog - with a wasted premise, average fights, and awful usage of just about every character, Dragon Ball Z's third outing to the cinema is a much weaker affair then the others, leading me to question the good things I'd heard about it prior to my watch, and hopefully not an indication of the future films quality. But, I digress - it has it's moments, but it's easily one of the weaker entries in Dragon Ball overall that I've ever seen.
Well it's a Dragon Ball Z movie. We have cute young Gohan and a little purple dragon. I really enjoyed some of the cuter scenes. The fight scenes are decent, but less exciting than most of the other movies. Plot line is good, it mostly focuses on Gohan and Goku. We do get to see the other characters, Chi-chi, Piccolo, Krillin, the little pig thing, King Kai, and some others. It's a pretty short movie and could easily be watched by someone who has never even seen Dragon Ball Z before without confusion. The art style is typical of the older Dragon Ball Z episodes andmovies.
Dragon Ball Z Movie 3: The Tree of Might is the first Dragon Ball movie where invaders from space appear to destroy or take over the world. In this case they want to plant a tree that absorbs the power of the planet. One of the aliens happened to be a Saiyan named Turles that resembles Goku and unironically has in the Japanese version the same voice actress. That can at first be considered stupid knowing that only 4 Saiyans survived but considering that even Toriyama ignores that rule to introduce more Saiyans to the main plot and these movies are alternative storylines that can't fitto the main continuity, this can be ignored. The tree of might feels like a believable threat since like real trees it takes nutrient from the ground but far more than the planet can provide for every living organism thus leading to the devastation of the host planet. The movies has good foreshadowing of what is to come in its beginning act which shows the importance to value nature before the real conflict even begins. Thus when Turles wants to take the live from the planet, it gives the feeling of something important being lost. The film also succeeds on making the environment and its inhabitants important in battle since the more the planet decays, the more the feeling of loss comes closer for the good guys. The movie also does a good job justifying the power of its antagonists and the cost. In this case the Tree of Might which drains the life force of the planet and bear fruits that give the users that consume it immense power from the planet. And considering the destruction it causes, it feels believable the power it provides unlike many other villains who are: Born strong, trained hard or transform to get stronger. Since the invaders have done it several times, they are one of few Dragon Ball villains in general that have justification for their immense power. Turles is a good villain and feels like a real Saiyan as he is obsessed with power and strength willing to sacrifice an entire planet and its inhabitants just to increase his might. He also shows that while he likes fighting, he won't stray away attacking from behind or using other dirty tactics to win. Even going as far as using the main characters as weapons to beat one another. Icarus or Hire Dragon is a cute dragon child that befriends Gohan. And their relationship plays a role in this movie where they help each other out in difficult situations. The movie did also a good job using the unused Z Fighters in this movie well like Tien, Yamcha and Chaotzu who alongside Krillin fight against Turles' henchmen. Even against an opponent they can't win, they still used their remaining power to hold off the last villain showing bravery and guts just to allow Goku to prepare his finishing move. Goku also feels like an amazing character where he puts the safety over his son over immediately saving the planet. The criticism about this movie is obviously with Turles looking like Goku and there won't be an explanation why that is the case except Toei trying to cash in on the popularity of Goku by making an Evil Counterpart of him that looks like him. In giving a hint what if Goku never hit his head and remained evil. That won't be the last time we see a Goku lookalike and it will get tiring. In the French version Turles is related to Goku. In the case like this, it would have been better if they showed a backstory for Turles like what planet he was sent or how it molded him to the destructive being he is. Or something so we can see a parallel how Turles experienced the world compared to Goku. But that doesn't make him less of a good villain. Obviously like many Z movies there is the use of power from someone else to put the finishing blow, but in this film it was done a more creative way because how the movie played with expectation of the viewer. Lastly the typical cliches such as Piccolo arriving to save Gohan. In conclusion, the tree of might is an excellent Dragon Ball movie using the environment well to show the state of the battle and the contrast between Turles and Goku even if not done in a way it warrants the need to have him look like an Evil Goku. And obviously using all the important Z Fighters at the time in the movie showing the importance to stop the threat unlike in something like Dragon Ball Super Broly where only Goku and Vegeta fight while everyone else is minding their own business.
Dude this one sucks so much, where did all the fun in the last two movies go? Once again, they essentially just redid the plot of Dead Zone and pasted in some new villains, but this time, the fighting is really boring (despite the entire Z Warrior cast helping out) and the villain is just an OC recolor of Goku. Maybe if they played around with some duality stuff or whatever it might be vaguely exciting, but this is just plain dumb. The cute dragon and Gohan being adorable as usual nearly saves the movie, but sadly when half of each of these movies isa fight scene, the fights gotta be good. Speaking of the cute dragon, the dragon is important enough that it appears again prominently in a few later Dragon Ball Z stories, and I believe it's even mentioned briefly in a later Dragon Ball Kai episode (the one where Great Sayiaman has to beat up a circus owner who stole a dinosaur, I think). ONCE AGAIN despite this, the movie is completely counter to continuity and fits nowhere in the timeline. It's even more baffling this time because of how much emphasis is put on it later on.
You probably know DBZ films aren't 'canon' (non-canon = anime original, events of this movie doesn't happen in manga or LN), and people view them in very different opinions. Some people like these movies, others hate them. I like the Tree of Might, there are things that I dislike, which are dragging this movie down. However, in comparison to other DBZ movies, I think these negatives are mostly minor. So, let's get into the review. My Positives: 1, Art style and music are basically DBZ, looks good and sounds good as well. 2, The idea of a tree that devours the planet ecosystem to have a special power-enhancingfruit is quite interesting. 3, Turles: I like Turles, he isn't anything special, but I think the movie has managed to make him look like a decently entertaining character. 4, End fight: Fight has an excellent finishing of Turles with his tree of might. My Negatives: 1, Turles: Lower class Saiyans often looks the same. Nope, you're just lazy :D. I don't mind Turles being Goku lookalike. I like the concept. I like it more than Goku Black, but saying lots of lower-class Saiyans looks the same as Goku is lazy. 2, Initial sequence: I'd have lowered its length to 5 minutes max and invested more time into Turles Now Tree of Might has more positives and negatives to talk about, but these are the biggest ones for me. I don't want to write a long essay. It's not a groundbreaking movie, but I found Tree of Might to be quite good. To finish it off, I give it 7/10. I think this movie is worth watching at least once. I won't mind rewatching it.
