The Carnival Moment is a time when several narratives from Type-Moon's famous works intersect. It happens every decade in an entirely new dimension, and those who have never run into each other can meet. And what's more, all individuals involved gain the opportunity to fulfill any of their wishes! However, they will have to come a long way, as they will need to partake in contests. In Carnival Phantasm, various characters are put into situations that ridicule their own worlds. Nevertheless, they all have the same objective: to win the contests by any means necessary! As a gigantic Type-Moon fan, I recognize that this review may be a bit biased. Indeed, if you aren't familiar with any of the characters in Fate stay/night or Tsukihime, or the universe both stories take place in (aptly named the "Nasuverse" by fans after the author, Kinoko Nasu), then don't expect to enjoy it nearly as much as I did. On the other hand, if you are familiar with anything Type-Moon, then prepare for the best parody series in recent memory. In short, your knowledge of Type-Moon lore is directly proportional to the amount of enjoyment you will get out of this series. And for me, it's a perfect 10. As I understand, this anime is based off the Take-Moon manga created by Eri Takanashi, whom you may know best as the creator of the relatively popular series Kannagi. If you've been introduced to Kannagi and its offbeat brand of humor, then you might know what to expect...or do you? The fact is, Carnival Phantasm's humor is way more polished and wacky than Kannagi, and that's coming from someone who considers himself a fan of both. It's clear just by viewing one episode that Takanashi is passionate about the Nasuverse, bringing in even the most obscure relics and fan favorites such as Neco-Arc Chaos, Sion, and Caren. Even the denizens of Melty Blood are present! Going into all the individual segments, easter eggs, and recurring gags would make this a very, very long review, so I'll just leave all those for you to watch for yourself. But some of my personal favorite segments are the Grail-kun, Afterschool Alleyway Alliance, The 5th Seihai Grand Prix, Berserker's First Errand, and of course the omnipresent Seihai-kun. The Badump! Date Plan segment gets an honorable mention simply for being exactly what it sounds like: the protagonists of Fate and Tsukihime trying to create their own respective harems. If you know why that might pose many, many problems and you can realize how absolutely, ridiculously absurd that would be, then this series is definitely for you. Things even get serious in typical Nasu fashion with the episode "Final Dead Lancer". At its core, it is nothing more than a love letter to the Type-Moon universe, and I wouldn't ask for anything more. Carnival Phantasm is beautifully animated and has one of the catchiest OPs in recent memory. The ED pales in comparison, but still serves as a nice dramatis personae to the Nasuverse. The Tiger Dojo segments are the stuff of legend--you won't believe how good they are till you see them. You won't find any mollusks or postmodern, unconventional, often maddening writing styles in this series, but this is without a doubt the best and most hilarious take on the Nasuverse since "Platonic Magician H" or "Kaleido Prism Illya". I highly recommend it to anyone. SEA-SON FOUR! SEA-SON FOUR!
Carnival Phantasm - THE GREATEST THING EVER CREATED BY THE HUMAN RACE Story- This don't need no story, its basically a whole bunch of comedic skits, so the presence of story is neither needed nor wanted Art - It is an ONA so art isn't really gonna be that good considering the budget ONA's get, but the use of simplistic art favors the humor, in fact it wouldn't have been as good if the art was high budget. Sound - Best Opening ever made, in all of creation. Characters - All the Type Moon Characters, made brilliantly hilarious. Best Type Moon Fan service ever Enjoyment - This represents that maximumamount of enjoyment a human being can ever have. Overall - You need to have watched and be familiar with the other Type Moon Anime: Fate, Tsukihime. But if you liked those.... this will be a better present then anything anyone has given you...... Even a car. If you haven't watched it, and you've seen other type moon anime, watch it now. It is pretty much the best comedy you can get.
This is perhaps the best fanservice anime I've seen to date. You may think...Fanservice? But how can it be fanservice if there are no well endowed, scantily clad female characters in there? Well lets just say that's the beauty of this show. Carnival Phantasm is literally servicing the loyal Type-Moon fans that have been following their works over the last 12 years. With that being said, this show is not for everyone. If you do not have an extensive knowledge of Nasuverse from playing Tsukihime, Fate/Stay Night(The anime for these two sucked therefore you have to play the games), Fate/Hollow Ataraxia (Fate/Zero novels optional withthe anime as a worthy substitute) and Melty Blood, you will not get even a fraction of enjoyment out of this show as opposed to the viewers who have played through all these games. Carnival Phantasm utilizes a ton of inside jokes that, like I mentioned before, will not make sense if you have not played the games listed above. The show also assumes that you are familiar with all the characters and takes on a rather slice of life approach with little connections between episodes. The animation may seem ordinary but it is certainly refreshing to see the Tsukihime cast no longer suffering from the "male face syndrome" and the Fate cast being relieved from the "same face disorder". Even though this anime is niche, it serves its purpose well and does exactly what it was intended to do: satisfying Type-Moon fans. For that reason, Carnival Phantasm definitely deserves a nine out of ten from me.
So, you take a violent juggernaut franchise that started out as a visual novel with H-rated content aka Fate/Stay, and less popular franchises of the same universe (with Tsukihime being the one of the bunch with the most screentime), and turn their violent asses into a comedy that celebrates every corner of the Type-Moon universe... FUCKING BRILLIANT!!! *I don't know how the hell one can spoil a gag-based comedy series like this, but this series found a way to make people do that. Spoilers for Carnival Phantasm* (Given how this is a comedy that involves nothing but gags and no real overarching plot and the characters are merelyexaggerated versions of their game counterparts, those sections won't be present here. Just have fun with this shit; we both know that's what this anime wants us to do. However, just because I can...) STORY + CHARACTERS: FUCK THAT SHIT!!! So, Carnival Phantasm is an adaptation of the manga "Take Moon" which took all of these franchises on a comedy ride in the first place. However, this was made for the 10th anniversary of Type-Moon (aka, the Nasuverse), the mega-hit gaming universe that spawned the flagship Fate franchise and other, lesser known works, like Tsukihime and Melty Blood. These are the main 3 that get representation (sorry, Kara no Kyoukai fans), and we got 12 episodes that spanned 3 seasons: 4 episodes per season. Keeping this in mind, it would be a crime if they didn't invoke reference overload. I mean, there are at least 1,000 references to Fate/ alone, whether it be to a character trait, or even a spinoff (like Fate/Kaleid). The 5th Holy Grail Wars here are the most hilarious Wars in human history, and they played it up to no end. I love that in every season finale, one major show comes to an end. With season 1, the After school Alleyway Alliance (comprising of 3 the main females from Melty Blood (a sequel to Tsukihime): Sion, Satauki, and Riesbyfe) broke up. With season 2, the magical girl series, White Moon Princess Phantas-moon finished with only the unfulfilled promise of a sequel to bait us with. With season 3, comes the end of Carnival Phantasm itself (at least until the Haruchika, Illya-jou, and EX Season specials). Taiga's corner is always a nice thing to comeback to, mainly for Taiga's antics. Hell, in the very first episode, she f*cks over the studio's budget and is rendered colorless and in storyboard as punishment in the next episode. You gotta love gags that carry over. Speaking of... Lancer dies; a lot. He is the Kenny of Carnival Phantasm (hell, episode 11 makes a reference to killing Kenny from South Park). Thanks to his E-rank luck, he dies 9 times throughout episodes 1-10 (one every episode; if there's a contradiction you spot, I'll get to that) with episode 11 making him try to dodge each and every death. He thinks he dodges ever one, except there's on in episode 2 we didn't see. Do you remember the gag where Miyako tai-quan blasts a volleyball into the rocket Shirou and Neco Arc were fixing? Turns out, that was another death for Lancer: the only one he was unable to overcome. Still, at least it ends with him raising his fist through his grave like a badass. My favorite skits were: The 5th Great Clash of the Magicians: The Holy Grail War Baddump Melty Blood Xtream Beach Volleyball, Berserker's First Errand, A Wise Man's Gift, 5th Holy Grail War Grand Prix, Final Dead Lancer, and Baddump Date Super Plan, with the latter being a hilarious take on the "date-em all/pick all the routes" thing people do (including School Days...the anime) that gets built up in the end of season 1, and finally (and gloriously) executed in the series finale. In fact, the reference overload in each of these skits left me rolling much longer than I care to admit, and this is from the Fate/ references alone. With the amount of Tsukihime and Melty Blood references, this has become the pinnacle of self-indulgence for any franchise, and will make the ultimate anime viewing experience for the most seasoned of fans of the Nasuverse, with the only thing that could trump it being one in which every single franchise (including every single continuation, reboot, remake, alternate version, and spinoff) of the Nasuverse is heavily referenced and featured. The finale (even after Baddump Date Super Plan) is a truly bittersweet goodbye, as now everyone from the Nasuverse is here for cameos (including Shiki and Fate/Zero, and excluding Fate/ spinoffs), as if to say "goodbye, and we want a season 4"...wait. Scratch that. That's exactly what they said. Thank you for that, Lerche. ART: 8/10 Yup, you heard me right. This wasn't done by Studio Ufotable (Fate/Zero, UBW, Heaven's Feel trilogy, and all Fate game OPs after being appointed for the franchise), Stufio Silver Link (Fate/Kaleid series) or God forbid, DEEN (Fate/Stay Night and the UBW film). Nope. This was done by Studio Lerche, which would later be known for animated Assassination Classroom. All in all, they did a brilliant job here. As for the art, while it doesn't hold a candle with Ufotable's work on the Nasuverse, it didn't need to; it's a gag-based comedy, after all. Still, the OP is jam-packed with references and objects (including up to 50+ people and tons of confetti in a single moment for second on end), and I like that the frames right before seeing Lancer fly off into the miserable distance change every season while the frames right after change every episode. There are moments where the animation really gets creative and cool too, even if there are (luckily minuscule) some moment of bad CGI. Overall, especially with the facial expressions, OP, references, Studio Lerche did a pretty good job, especially for their VERY FIRST PROJECT! Damn, what a way to begin your studio's career! SOUND: 7/10 The OP, "Super Affection" by Minami Kuribayashi, Miyuki Hashimoto, Faylan, Aki Misato, yozuca*, and rino, is a real catchy and preppy OP that, coupled with the lively animations of the characters, and reference overload, really sells us in for whatever the hell we signed up for. The ED, "Fellows" by Masaaki Endoh, is an alright ED that shows what a family these character are, thanks to the art present here. Most of the OST is meh, but I do like the piano bit during the Sakura skits in episode 6, and the piece that plays at the end of Final Dead Lancer. Overall, it's an ok OST with a really fun OP and a decent ED to boot. Then again, comedy anime doesn't need a big, show-stealing OST, anyway. ENJOYMENT: 10/10 As stated previously, these goddamn skits were priceless and I could not stop laughing at points, especially in my favorite skits (as mentioned above). The half a million references were a riot (and some of the cameos were either heartwarming or invigorating), and the running gags (Lancer constantly dying and Sion constantly bullshitting about calculations) were just as hilarious. Even in episode 6, my least favorite episodes, there was still some really funny moments. It is the pinnacle of comedy anime for me, and I cannot help but coming back to this one. Also, I nod every time Neco Arc Bubbles does. The best part, once I become even more well-versed in the Nasuverse, I will only find this wonderland of comedy even more satisfying and gut-busting. Can't wait to get to that point. OVERALL: 9/10 RAW SCORE: 87/100 Honestly, I don't have much left to say. Lerche really made an impact with this as their first project. It is the current pinnacle of what reference-overload media is capable of. Funny story, this was my introduction into the Nasuverse, and I already loved it. Sure, you really need some knowledge of at least some of the series referenced here, but it can still be a riot for newcomers. It's at least a better starting point than Fate/Grand Order. Well, with all that said, I bid you adieu.
Anime Review No.12 Carnival Phantasm is the comedic parody of previous Type-Moon works that circle in 1 universe with the same character with far more different personality as the original and with different kind of art style. If you’re looking for serious Type-Moon works you are better off not choosing this anime but if you’re a type-moon fan looking for some cute fan service of your favorite characters you should not miss out this anime. This Overview doesn’t have any spoilers but just teaser on what you can expect to this anime once you started watching it. Plot (5/10) Average The anime is compose of randomstories from different Type-Moon works that is made just for entertainment and nothing more so don’t inspect too much for a serious plot and mature atmosphere like we always get in the Type-Moon franchise. Just enjoy the fun. The comedy is more on slap tick humor than smart ones so you don’t need to think hard here just to get the jokes but if you are Type-Moon fan who already have the reference I am sure you enjoy it more than what it is. Character (7/10) Good Personally I just watch this anime for the reason the girls here are more cuter and the other characters here are not serious about their roles and yes they are not serious to the point they make a joke about their actual roles in their own respective universes which is fun to watch. The studio made a good job to satisfy the fans wants especially what they did to the saber fans, Arcuied fans like me, Illya just got cuter here and other funny ways they make a parody of other characters iconic roles in their respective works. This anime is solely targeting type-moon fans but also can act’s on its own and can also attract non-type moon fans that are looking for decent comedies. Music (7/10) Good The opening is fun and clearly explains what kind of anime “carnival phantasm” is an enjoyable and funny anime and nothing more. The soundtrack for the background uses mostly the background music of the already establish titles for the dramatic parody and comedic appeal. The ending “fellows” is an ending that gives that nostalgia feels. It’s been more than a decade when the first visual novels of Type-Moon came out and a few years when the anime adaptation where made before “Carnival Phantasm” is made so I can say it’s smart selecting the song for reminded it’s fans how long that have been when Type-Moon ever started. Art (7/10) Good I give credit for the animation for it made all the characters from different universes to blend each other like they live in one universe without giving a damn and the art matches the comedic appeal for the reason the art work is more easy going with lighter colors making the atmosphere not serious than the original version being sharp and serious in atmosphere. The animation made the girls moe here so yeah this justify the “waifu” dreams of most type-moon fans and they just don’t look moe they act moe adding more comedic impact. Enjoyment (7/10) Good I was regale when I watched this series because I procure a lot of laughs and I am almost been devour by the “Moe service”. This show is worth to elicit to other non-type-moon fans for it have decent comedy and when I mean decent not too much ecchi scene but it those include a few but you find it funny than arousing which is good. Overall (6/10) A fine show for entertainment I adorn that this anime even existed for a Type-Moon fan like me I was in sheer joy when I was watching it. The anime gave me an enthralling experience and I hope you guys can feel the same once you watch this anime because you won’t even notice the time when you’re watching this. The anime is quick to finish for it only have less than 15 minutes per episode. I say if you’re looking for a decent comedy to pass the time why not try “carnival phantasm” even without the reference this show is enjoyable for the comedy.
Tsukihime was my 1st anime that made me start my anime addict life, the 2nd anime for me to watch right after Tsukihime was Fate Stay Night. I never knew they were under Type Moon until I checked MAL a few months later. After my cousin told me that they were going to make an anime with both of them put together, I was excited and eagerly waiting until it was released. A couple weeks before the start of the anime I thought that it was going to be filled with tons of fighting and character rivalry. Then my cousin sent the opening to the animeand it was all fun and light instead of dark. I felt a little disappointed, but actually relieved that no character had to die fighting each other. Story: huh? there is a story to this anime? nope there wasn't.....I think. It was a bunch of different random things happening in every episode switching between Tsukihime and Fate Stay Night. Art:10/10 I gave the art a 10/10 because I always enjoyed watching light cute anime styles. Sound: 10/10 Sound was great, from the voice actors to the effects used. Character: 10/10 I enjoyed all of them very much. From the wackiness from Assassin or Kohaku's mad scientist acting and Hisui's hypnotizing movements etc. The other characters that were added from the Melty Blood manga and games were there in the anime as well. Enjoyment 10/10 Everything funny and easy to understand because I have read the Tsukihime manga and watched Fate Stay Night anime. Now I have shown this anime to a friend of mine and I showed him the jokes that didn't require knowledge from either of those and he enjoyed it, but when they brought in a reference from one of them I had to explain it to him, but he just got more confused from me explaining it. Overall: 10/10 This anime was very enjoyable to me and one of my favorites of all time. To fully understand this anime you need to read Tsukihime, watch the Fate Stay Night animes and read the novels, and play the Melty Blood games a little. There were some characters that I were unknown to from me not reading the Fate Stay Night Novels.
Ah, the Nasuverse. What a horrible place filled with murder, rape, war, and suicide. God knows what was going on in the head of the person who thought up Carnival Phantasm. God knows what he was thinking when he decided to make a light hearted comedy featuring the nasuverse. I just want to say this one thing to the man who thought up Carnival Phantasm. You sir, are a genius. Now, to start off this review let's start with the story. The story.... is pretty much non existent. It's pretty much the characters of the Nasuverse, Fate/stay night and Tsukihime in particular, meeting and dicking around. They engage in cooking, volleyball, and Grand Prix. Now, If you have never played any of the Visual Novels in the nasuverse, chances are you won't get most of the jokes in Carnival Phantasm. Nearly all the jokes are inside jokes, meaning you have to have played a Nasuverse Visual Novel to get them. Each episodes are filled with Easter Eggs and cameos. In other words, this anime is pure non-sexual Fanservice. Although, there is some sexual fanservice here and there..... I, personally love the art in this anime. It's bright and cheerful. The opposite of what fans of the Nasuverse are used to. Sure, there are a few animation hiccups here and there, but most of the time it's perfect. The sound is top notch as well. The music is addictive, and the seiyuus fit their characters perfectly. And, trust me. You'll be replaying the opening over, and over, and over again. Hell, I'm listening to the opening as I'm typing up this review! My most favorite part of Carnival Phantasm is the characters. All the characters in this anime are lovable. From the sadistic Gilgasmesh to the unlucky Ke-...er.. I mean Lancer. This time around there are three new Neko Arcs. If you don't know what a Neko Arc they are the mascots of Carnival Phantasm. The original Neko Arc.... named Neko Arc is the mascot of Type-Moon and is a cat girl parody of Arcueid, The female protagonist of the Visual Novel, Tsukihime. Now, did I enjoy this anime? Yes. Very much in fact. Each episode had me laughing, which is rare for a anime to do so, and In some episodes I was in tears. Although, if you don't have the patience to play a Nasuverse Visual Novel, then you should pass on this anime. If you are a fan of the Nasuverse and Type-Moon, then you need... no MUST watching this anime. I don't care if you are already watching something, put it on hold and watch this anime now! ....are you watching it?
If you're a big Type-Moon fan, this anime is very close to your fantasy anime as it covers Type-Moon's 2 very popular works Tsukihime and Fate/ Stay Night. Episode 4 , 12 and the HibiChika Special will be the best episodes if you're into the harem side of the whole thing. Nothing much to say other than you will either enjoy this or not depending on how much you love Type-Moon. It's definitely one of my favorites. As a big Type-Moon fan, the only thing beating this anime would be an animation of the manga "All Around Type-Moon" as that covers more Type-Moon series not just Tsukihime andF/ SN. Although, characters outside those 2 series make a brief cameo at the end of the HibiChika special. Shiki Ryougi as a cook, Mikiya Kokutou alongside Shiki Tohno and Shirou Emiya demanding a new Season, etc.
This review is from a person who thought Shingetsutan Tsukihime was a decent anime and I liked Fate/Stay Night but I can say without a doubt that I loved Carnival Phantasm. These 12 episodes will most probably crack you up if you like TYPE-MOONs works. And while I may seem to exaggerate with the review I just have to say that this is how I felt when I watched this show. Story - 10 These episodes is only made for laughing and I can say that they succeeded. What can you possible ask for more than for example: Berserker goes out to buy batteries and Saber worksas a maid in a café and other weird and crazy competitions for the Holy Grail. Each episode mostly consists of several skits that could be from a few seconds long to the whole episode. Art - 10 As Tsukihime and Fate/Stay Night have a few years on their back they have chosen a studio to make all the characters really cute as for the background that is really well done. The character designs fits perfectly considering what kind of show you are watching. The animation is top notch and I can't find a single fault. Sound - 10 The voice actors for some of the characters have changed which maybe seems like a bad idea but it turned out to be better than before. They've done a terrific work to both sound cute and hectic when the situation calls for it. I must say that Kawasumi Ayako (Saber's voice actor) did the best job of the entire cast of veterans. The soundtracks for this show is also really good and are played when it is appropriate. The opening "Super Affection" that is sung by Minami Kuribayashi, Miyuki Hashimoto, Faylan, Aki Misato, yozuca* and rino is an upbeats song that fits the pace of the series and is a perfect intro for the anime. The ending song "Fellows" sung by Endou Masaaki is not that upbeat but still catchy and both are songs that a really likable. Characters - 10 Considering that the characters from both these animes (or visual novels if some of you would like) revolves alot around killing and murder, I find it awfully funny seeing the characters in this kind of show. I find many of the characters a lot more likable than in the original. And as I wrote before the character designs are a lot cuter as well which may take part in make them more likable. Enjoyment - 10 I haven't been laughing like this in a while and it is one of the best comedies out there and I literally laughed out several times while watching these episodes. And I hope that you will enjoy it as much as I did. Overall - 10 To have given every aspect of this review a 10 I have enjoyed this anime in every way possible and I am sad that the show has ended. But at least I had a great time watching it and I am glad I did watch it. I hope you liked my review and that you will watch it, and if you will watch it... Enjoy!
Finally, after years of searching, I have found what I was looking for. Such perfection. If beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, then I must have been blind before watching carnival phantasm. I have seen a couple of anime that are worthy of receiving a 10, and i have enjoyed so many shows, but carnival phantasm.... carnival phantasm is my favorite anime. Seeing all those characters from these serious shows come together in this wonderful show was an amazing experience. I was sad before watching carnival phantasm, but now I am happy and on my way to completing my seventh master's degree. carnival phantasmhas helped me find inner peace. I loved the opening, seeing everyone dance together was a blessing from Odin himself. I am sure he is somewhere in Valhalla enjoying carnival phantasm this very moment. The song itself was great as well. the ending song was not enjoyed as much, but it was not as bad as some songs I've heard before. Carnival phantasm includes characters from various type-moon works, and does not really have a "plot", but I enjoyed every minute of carnival phantasm. I have devoted my life to carnival phantasm. I have no regrets.
(note: this review only takes into account the episodes where the Fate characters appeared. I haven't watched the other Type-Moon anime so I won't be able to do those episodes justice) Have you ever wondered what your favourite characters would be like in an alternate universe? What if they were just a goofy bunch? Or maybe very serious? Well, Carnival Phantasm does just that! Fans of the Fate Universe: we're in for a great treat!! Disclaimer: if you haven't watched the Fate/Stay Night anime, you will feel that this anime is very stupid because you will not be able to relate to the inside jokes. If youonly watched Fate/Zero, you may relate to some of the characters, especially Saber, but you won't get the full experience. So, in general, watch Fate/Stay Night first and then Carnival Phantasm! Carnival Phantasm consists of 12 short skits, with each one having no relation to the previous one. So in essence, you can pick any episode to watch and not feel left out (however, the only continuity that may exist are our hosts' speeches at the beginning of each episode). Each skit is jammed with parodies to the Fate/Stay Night franchise and the writers did an absolutely wonderful job in poking fun at the series. One of my favourite episodes was where the battle for the Holy Grail becomes a game show. The comedy was spot on and I cracked up during each line! The artists preserved all of the character designs but added on some nice comedic touches to it. It's pretty refreshing to see the usual serious and dark characters in Fate/Stay Night act so cheerful and carefree. Also, the colours were very warm and gave off just a great atmosphere. There is not much to say about the sound. Although it is not outstanding, the soundtrack did not feel intrusive at all. In fact, at times, I felt that the sound added more humour to the scene. I did love the opening though. The opening music perfectly captures the lightheartedness and also showcases our favourite female leads showing us their moves. Do you know that hand sign that chefs make when they taste a great food? (It's like your thumb and index finger make a 0 while the other fingers are extended) I would make that sign for the characters. The writers preserved the personalities of the characters and added more goofiness to them. For example, Saber is still very serious and head-strong but the writers twists it to make Saber be very cute, making you love Saber even more (if you are a Saber fan). Remember, this anime is not to be taken very seriously so if you find yourself questioning some decisions made by the characters, relax and let them do their thing. I absolutely enjoyed this comedy. It's really refreshing seeing all those dark and intense Fate characters having fun together. As a Fate series fan, I felt that the writers gave us what we wanted: a high-energy celebration of the awesomeness that is the Fate series. Definitely pick up Carnival Phantasm whenever you can! You will have a great time. Thank you very much for reading!
This show is the most perfect piece of Fate fanservice a fan could ever ask for. ... And I am that fan, so this is an instant ten-atta-ten for me. That said, it is good comedy for anyone wanting to have something random, but it will shine the most for the people who are familiar to the works of Type-Moon
I loved absolutely everything about this OVA. The only sad part was how short the episodes were and the fact that it had to end. Carnival Phantasm is a mix of Fate/Stay night, Fate/Hollow Ataraxia, Melty blood, Tsukihime, Ultimate Blade works, and Fate zero, along with many many more. For those of you who dont know, this series extends into every form of entertainment: anime(quite a few), novels, arcade games, manga, Erogames (which capatalize on getting Shiro laid by everything female), everything. A lot of the jokes are based off of some of these arcade games and the movies. And almost all of them arefantastic. These multiple platforms are what give the characters intense back story, and interesting relationships, and its what makes these shorts so dang hilarious. If you really want to properly understand everything, go to the characters tab and read every single character summary, and then some from the relating animes and glimpse at the games, it'll help you get why the jokes are so freaking ridiculous. AND NOW FOR THE REVIEW!!! Story: 10 How is this possible in an anime that has no story? Thats just it, its because this anime has no story that everything is so funny. The characters can do anything they want. It takes Tsukihime a vampire horror anime and literally injects it with happiness and randomness. If i had to describe this anime it would Pure Unaltered Joy. They took serious anime's and just made the characters hilarious. This anime uses several shorts to prove this. Some are jokes about fighting for the Holy Grail (like episode 1), other are just stories of the characters' lives (like episode 2). The anime is almost never serious. It literally oozes funny happiness. These short stories and arcs are what make this show so great. Art: 10 It is well animated. It knows exactly where to give detail and where to let everything by flat and one dimensional. It adds to the experience. Sound: 10 I love the OP and END. They are great. The sound effects that go with the characters and the sound tracks are great. Character:10 Everything you know about these characters has changed. Everyone is a Gag and everyone is a Straight man (this means a joke guy and the person who calls them out on the joke). The characters lose all their seriousness and become immersed in a world of fun. Gilgamesh goes from being a frightful king everyone fears to an arrogant jerk who, to quote, "is the world's oldest form of a bully." Saber tries to hold on to her "warrior" status, but she too has become a formal joke character. Illya has also lost her arrogance and is just a cute little girl character. Enjoyment: 10 How could it not be. This anime is chock full of puns, jokes, gags, references, and somethings that just make you go: "WAAAAAH?" . My parents generally disapprove of anime, but after showing them a single episode they could not help laughing at this anime. This is one of the few animes that i will go buy after watching, simply because it is so great, despite being produced by such a new company. GOOD JOB! Overall: 10 Best comedic anime I have ever seen. It manages to be funny without being stupid. Its lack of continuity and plot are also part of its charm. I absolutely recommend this anime to every who ever had anything to do with the Fate/Stay series.
This is the type fan service we deadly need. With a universe as big as Typemoon, cross over is always meant to happen. But crafting such an excellent, genuinely funny and creative parody on so many levels, Carnival Phantasm is truly a work of genius. While Tsukihime is not exactly a successful anime, its game is very well-known and highly considered as one of the best visual novel til date and clearly there's no franchise as big as how the Fate! expanded with so many spin-off and side story and games,... Clearly, Typemoon's fan, especially Fate! fans will very happy with this spin-off! Put your favoritecharacters of both series in different settings, get them to interact with each other. Very simple yet effective. Forget the death battles, forget all the dramas, dive yourself into the happiness everyday life of our beloved characters. You wanna see Lancer death for the 1000th times? Do you wanna see a death race "Holy Grail War" style? Do you wanna see how Shirou get away with dating every girl in the same time? I'd love to. This randomness is what make this anime so great. You'll never know what to expect in the next episode but amusement is certain. I'd consider Carnival Phantasm the third best installment into the luxurious Fate! Franchise. And it's one of my highest recommendation for the best comedy ever.
For any Type-Moon fan, you must watch this! It is an OVA comedy series with all of the characters from Fate Stay/Night and Tsukihime. Even if you only know about one of the two series, it is enjoyable. Each episode has the characters in different situations and shenanigans. These include a race, shopping trip, working at a cafe, etc. The full series subbed can be found easily on Youtube. It is nice to see everyone from such dark shows in fun, light-hearted situations. It may be my favorite Type-Moon anime series, and I have watched it through several times. 10/10 recommend!
Very light, humorous series Sort of amusing to see generally serious characters in silly stories Jokes are entertaining and do not feel forced While there is no major plot the short stories are quite solid ( Final Destination episode - fantastic) Soundtrack is pleasant, especially the catchy opening

Note: I rate my overall score based on my enjoyment! MAL's synopsis explains it: "Carnival Phantasm is an adaption of the manga "Take Moon" by Type-Moon's Eri Takenashi, to celebrate Type-Moon's 10th Anniversary. Carnival Phantasm shows parodies and new stories loosely based on Type-Moon's original works like Melty Blood, Fate/Stay Night, Tsukihime, and more." This amazing spin-off,of two really serious works makes it so you can enjoy the characters and laugh like crazy every single episode.Story: 10/10 The story isn't really the best thing in this spin-off,but every single episode with it's huge number of awesome characters makes other ways the story could have gone, and it displays how would the characters live they're normal days. This was really well done that you will laugh like crazy. (At least I did!) Art: 8/10 The art is really pretty, but it does have errors in some points of the OP or in some scenes, but if you don't pay attention to them, and trust me you won't even notice them, you will really enjoy the art stile of this OVA. Sound: 10/10 All of the cast members from they're own series are back, and every single voice is done in a great way.The OP song is easily lovable same goes for the ED.Off course since this is a happy spin-off,the sound feels really happy. Character: 10/10 Every character acts the same but with some humor added. For example Lancer gets killed in most of the episodes and Riesbyfe,Satsuki and Sion have a stand up comedy group called "Back-Alley Alliance" and trust me you will enjoy they're stupid jokes. And then you have the "next episode preview" where Illya and Taiga try to give you the preview of the next episode, and off course you will enjoy it! Same goes for the rest of the characters, you will enjoy them all! Enjoyment: 10/10 As a person that only watched fate/stay night,After this awesome OVA I cant wait to watch the rest of the series and give Melty Blood a try.I laughed at every scene at least once, and singed with the OP and ED every time.So in the end I really enjoyed this OVA! Overall: 10/10 I didn't really expect much of this OVA,but I'm happy that I gave it a try, since in the end I ended up really enjoying it.And I would be really pleased for more of this!Fans of the Type Moon visual novels, and fans of the Fate series will enjoy this for sure! Give us a SEASON FOUR! :D
When I watched the first episode of Carnival Phantasm, I had no idea that they were going to turn it into an entire season's worth of parody. Carnival Phantasm is pretty much exactly as the description says, a parody of Type Moon's works. If you haven't watched both Tsukihime and FSN then you're not going to get most of the jokes as it's all one giant fun party. For those who have watched the aforementioned series, this is a light, comedic mixer where you have intriguing cross-series situations; Shirou and Shiki planning together on how to carry out harems, for example. Just don't expect acontiguous developing plot. Animation: Animation is pretty good. There isn't a need for the dramatic lighting featured in both of the base series so expect a brighter, more cheerful overall tone. All the characters designs carry over from their respective series, and a few additional characters from the rest of the Fate series (you might even spot Shiki and Azaka from Kara no Kyoukai if you look carefully). Given the action-based nature of the original material, do expect a bit of fighting, racing, and other bits of action; usually ending with Lancer "dying" in some manner or another. Sound: This starts with a catchy OP and ends with a modest ED. BGM is fairly distinctive as new themes are introduced for parodies such as Arculeid's Phantasmoon section. Most of the VAs return to voice their respective roles with the exception of Arculeid, perhaps her original voice wasn't a good match for her much more upbeat personality in this show. Story: Each short episode is composed of multiple even-shorter segments, many of which continue through different episodes. For example, every episode starts with Neko-fied versions of Type Moon characters running a cafe, and most end with Taiga and Ilya running a dojo. Despite the reuse of themes, the episodes don't grow old as many have very unique and interesting segments as well. Examples include Berzerker trying to run an errand or turning into a tank, Saber trying to work jobs and ride a lion, etc. There really isn't any unifying theme so you could potentially watch this in any order you'd like. Character: The series makes interesting use of characters. Many minor characters are given lots of air time while other significant supporting characters are shelved for most of the series (Ceil for example). There isn't anything groundbreaking as the characters should be just like you remember them from their respective series. However, a lot of their original personalities isn't conveyed given the short length of each segment. Seeing characters from different series mingle (rather than just as a cameo) was definitely an interesting notion. It's all great fun as long as you don't expect any serious developments. Value: In the end, while this is a very enjoyable parody, it will be remembered as a parody of giants. It's a lot of fun but just doesn't contribute anything of significance to the base series. However, if all you're looking for is some light entertainment, this will more than suffice.
