With the threat of the Holy Grail War no longer looming over Fuyuki City, its inhabitants can finally enjoy a time of peace. Now that all of the Masters and Servants have adjusted to their new mundane lives, Shirou has taken it upon himself to cook for his household and show Saber the wonders of modern cuisine. Every day, he ventures into the marketplace to see what kind of different meals he can cook up with unique ingredients and a limited budget. However, his legendary skills often attract uninvited guests from all over the city, so there is never a dull moment at dinner with the Emiya family. As his guests entertain themselves in the living room, Shirou walks through the step-by-step process of creating some of his favorite meals. With delicacies such as his savory New Year soba with shrimp tempura, steamy foil-baked salmon, and cheesy bamboo shoot gratin, everything is up for grabs on his menu. Itadakimasu! I am the Apetite of my Diet White Rice is my Body and Soy Sauce is my Blood. I have eaten over a Thousand Dishes, Unknown to Fast Food, Nor known to Gourmet. Have withstood Hunger to enter many Buffets Yet those Hands will never Cook Anything So, as I Pray-- Unlimited Seconds Please I am not the biggest fate/nasuverse/type-moon fan, but there is something that I absolutely adore: the characters. And I adore them to a point that I have actually seen Carnival Phantasm 4 times (so far). That scene where Berserker turns into a car and Illya says "Berser-car" is among the most adorable pieces of art created by man. Iget a coronary every single time. Naturally, when I heard Fate would be getting another show that has nothing to do with the main plot line, I was beyond thrilled, and now that I have seen it offer a scene where Illya wishes Berserker Merry Christmas after giving him a self-baked Christmas cookie that looks like him, I can only say that I will, most likely, never in my life giggle like this again. Perfection. The first half of this show is a bit problematic. Let me describe it with a meme: "You either go all the way or you go home. I am not dealing with this." And I am not. This isn't proper fanservice, this is just fanservice undertones, and the real content (cooking, other food related thingies, sol nonsense and... just being there) isn't strong enough. But then the show starts going for better and pleases all my needs for cute, comfy and fluffy things. The series becomes incredibly funny and adorable after the 6th episode. The remaining episodes all are rather different from each others and they all have something unique to offer. For example, the beginning of episode 7 shows us a beach volleyball game that is... a bit overboard. Episode 09 contains one of the best background animation sequences where Saber is trying to refrain from eating her food. The way she shakes among the facial expression burned in my soul. The 12th is incredibly comforting, almost soothing to watch with its atmosphere and level of cute. It's almost hard to believe how enjoyable the show end up being after its weaker start. The art and overall production is quite lacklustery. Especially the animation can be surprisingly mediocre, but it's not a big problem in a series of this sort. The music on the other hand can be real weird at times. Strange OST choices, the Op and Ed songs are quite awful to a point that they stand out. Some better decisions from the BGM department could have been done for certain. I still easily prefer Carnival Phantasm over this series, but I highly recommend it for those who like the cast and warm, wholesome thingies. Seeing type-moon characters act like clowns truly offers something that no other cast seems to have because even when the series is this comedic the character traits remain and their behavior never quite feels out of character.
“Refill please!” - Saber 🥇 9/10 Take a break from the Holy Grail War and let’s relax in such a heartwarming cooking show, Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family. This show is bringing characters you love from Fate/Stay Night, then portray them in a totally new aspect. If watching Fate/Stay Night is like having a main dish, then this show would be a dessert. 🎬 Story - 7/10 Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family is a show about cooking. While the story itself contains nothing extraordinary, it is rather focused on characters and filled with many heartwarming moments. 🎨 Animation - 8/10 Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family came with anabove-standard animation quality, having a watercolor art style, unlike the usual ufotable Fate’s one. The art style gives off a very relaxing vibe, building up the overall relaxing mood and tone of the anime. The art style itself is not very common, making it unique. By having this art style, characters are also giving off a totally different feeling, becoming friendlier and cuter. Most importantly, it is very eye-friendly and easy to watch. 🔈 Sound - 8/10 Everything here in Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family is relaxing. Theme songs are good, suiting the mood and tone of the anime. Soundtracks are surprisingly good, calm and relaxing. 🕶 Characters - 9/10 Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family is having the characters you love from Fate/Stay Night in a friendly and cute mode, allowing audiences to see them in another aspect. You will get to see Saber’s sweetest and cutest side, ever. 🎉 Enjoyment - 9/10 As a Fate fan, Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family totally enjoyed me. The mood and tone is perfect, everything fits together. Having such nice animation and relaxing sounds with characters I love could not enjoy me more! 📌 Recommendations Since Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family is a show that relies on its main show, not an independent anime, characters introductions are not included, Fate/Stay Night or Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works completion is highly recommended before watching this show. Lastly, if you love Fate/Stay Night characters, I am pretty sure you will love this anime. Enjoy!
Hey, weeb! Do you like Fate? Do you hate your own culture? Ever wish you could be Japanese instead? Well, if you wanna replace your heritage with dat sweet sweet Japanese culture, then you best start learning some shit. Luckily for you, Fate/Cooking is here to tutor you, and it’s brought some food along with it. This ain’t your ordinary Japanese class. Professors Emiya, Ramsey, and CBF are ‘bout to teach you some life skills, and class is in session! The first thing you may notice is how lovely everyone looks with this new art style and these kickass wardrobes. The second thing you maynotice is that the food looks scrumptious as all hell. The fine folks over at ufotable worked their asses off to prepare these good looks for you, and boy does it show when the food starts cookin’. I just wish they didn’t make us use shitty CGI for transportation. The gang’s all here and then some, and they’re just as lively as ever. Lancer, Rin, Taiga, you name it! Even lesser known compadres like Otoko join us for this lovely venture, and believe me, the guys I mentioned by name are the most fun guys here. I hope you’ll find our guests as much fun to witness and interact with as I did. Sadly, some of them had to bring along some shitty songs to open and close out each session, but we got some alright background music to compensate, and even those shitty opening and closing tracks ain’t all bad. Hell, some of them enhance the cooking experience, Now I’m not gonna lie, listening to all these recipe steps is pretty boring, so I only really stay for the visuals. I say this cuz again, this shit looks delicious. We got 13 of these meals, so dig in! Aww shit; now I’m hungry again! Happy New Year, everybody! Cast in a world of food wonders and desires, Emiya-san Chi Kyou no Gohan came together as a series that offers delicious entertainment. While I can’t say I’ve been a fan of recent Fate adaptations, there was no doubt that in this alternate world, it manages to awaken a certain food desire within me as well. Welcome to the Emiya’s family and a feast of epic shenanigans. Pleasing to the eyes is no less than the world of food. As humans, we can’t survive without it and in the world of Fate, Shirou and his friends brings in a new form of excitement with them. These13 episodes captures the magic and essence of Shirou’s culinary skills along with other Fate characters. We all know Shirou right? The boy is the mage apprentice who made his on screen TV debut back in 2006. Prior to watching this series, my expectations is aimed at a high caliber slice of life to please. To my delight, this series delivers exactly just that. First, let’s talk about the animation quality. It has a watercolor style that makes the show feel very lighthearted, a contrast to some of the Fate TV series and movies. It’s necessary to bring in a more casual audience as there’s no serious storytelling going on here. Every episode focuses on Shirou and his ability to cook. On the menu list, we got tofu, shrimps, sandwiches, chirashizushi, gratin, fried rice, among others. A main selling point is the light comedy elements as characters takes on much more casual roles than their Fate counterparts. Ever want to see Saber go shopping? What’s it like to watch Lancer working at a fish market? How about seeing some of badass volleyball between the servants such as Saber and Shirou vs Archer and Lancer? Or a peaceful Berserker who isn’t bent on destruction? It’s there. To make things flow even better, we get characters such as Caster and Illya making their appearances who are much more human than you’d expect. Everyone comes together into this series like a family and it’s hard not to smile when watching them together. And let’s not forget the character relationships. Saber and Shirou has been an iconic pair that any anime fan can identify from the Fate universe. Here, we don’t see them fight as a duo but rather enjoying their life as normal teens would. This also extends to other character pairs with bonds that you’d want to keep an eye on. For instance, Rin and Sakura share a sisterly love during one of their cooking sessions. Illya and Berserkers shares an unbreakable bond more as friends than master/servant in this series. The big picture to see here is how these character pairs have important relationships despite how simple the story is. I’d never thought there would be a day where I would indulge into the world of Fate, came back, and call it an enjoyable experience. This anime offers more than just culinary foodgasm but instead a light slice of life show for its character cast. Fans of the Fate universe should watch this with a relaxed mind and anyone can embrace this show for what they throw at you. It’s 13 episodes and that’s all is really needed for a delicious enlightenment.
Imagine your local eatery is sporting the “Best Burger in the World”. When you check it out for yourself you are presented with a monstrosity. A veritable tower to the heavens is seated on your plate. Bacon, lettuce, jalapenos, onions, mushrooms, ketchup, mustard, barbecue sauce, and countless other adornments cover the stacks and stacks of grilled beef with cheese stuffed inside each patty. At first glance it’s miraculous but after taking measures you quickly realize there is no way to start eating it that will not cause the whole thing to come tumbling down on you. Even if you could find the optimal eating-path thereis no way you could possibly finish once you started. Meanwhile on the neighboring table you see it. The lightly toasted sesame seed bun. The single piece of green crispy lettuce. The light drizzle of simple ketchup. The single slice of cheddar cheese slowly melting in between the two perfectly grilled all-beef patties. Despite its simple nature this unassuming burger makes expert use of only the absolute necessary ingredients to bring the most satisfying experience possible. The Fate franchise is that first towering burger. While crafted with fantastic ingredients it is a convoluted series that is intimidating to start and impossible to finish. Despite all the amazing elements you are missing you simply can’t justify taking that first bite knowing the labyrinthian journey you would be setting out on. “Today's Menu for the Emiya Family” is that simple burger. A simple setting and a simpler plot that selects only the absolute necessary elements of the Fate franchise to bring you the most comfortable and approachable experience possible. Just like every bite of that simple burger, each episode of this show fills you with a genuine sense of soothing warmth. Gone are the days of the Grail Wars. The characters that many have come to know and love are living a peaceful life. We follow our leading “Apron Boy” Shirou Emiya as he prepares delicious meals each day. Whether it be for overworked neighbors, tired classmates, or just his once-servant Saber, Shirou cooks up the culinary equivalent of a large warm hug that brings a much needed sense of peace to the world of the Fate franchise each and every night. There is no barrier of entry for this show. New viewers who have never attempted that towering burger will be just as at home as the ones who have braved its heights before. A new Grail War may be around the corner but in the meantime come on and in and kick off your shoes. There’s a seat saved just for you at the dinner table and there’s always something good cooking at the Emiya Household.
Ah, the Fate franchise. One of anime’s most respected, extensive, yet oddly superfluous multiverses. Admittedly, I’ve only seen Ufotable’s now iconic translation of the main storyline (Fate/Zero and Unlimited Blade Works) in what has become a sprawling universe of near-infinite possibility, so I have certainly no right to comment on the overall quality of any of the many, many, many spin-offs. But I can’t help but wonder; how necessary, really, is all of this? The main plot of an urban fantasy wizard death game with magical, anime-ized takes on classic figures of myth and history is a spectacular idea, and the story both of ShiroEmiya and his father as they try to maintain their morals in the midst of a chaotic, swirling mass of conflict and death is simultaneously both a better Chirsopher Nolan philosophical potboiler and a better Zach Snyder mythic spectacle than either of those filmmakers have ever actually achieved. And the framework lends itself well to repetition, seeing what new familiar public-domain entities we can transform into magic-wielding badasses to duke it out in underlit streets and abandoned buildings. But Jesus, how fucking many of these things do we need? How many additions have there been to the lore and characters that just spread further and further outward like puke on the pavement until the excellent ideas and craft at the core are buried under infinite mounds of mediocrity and superfluity? Say what you want about the MCU, at least the vast majority of its properties are incredibly well-received by critics and audiences alike. Well, perhaps I’ll change my tune on the subject if and when I finally start diving into the endless world of Fate spinoffs myself. Sadly, if Today’s Meal for the Emiya Family is any indication, I’m not sure how likely that possibility is. I don’t want to be too harsh on Today’s Meal for the Emiya Family- or, as it will be henceforth known, Food/Stay Night- because there’s not really anything to hate here. It’s a light, inoffensive side thing that exists for a very specific purpose and not much else. Based on a spinoff manga, it takes place in a version of the main timeline where the combatants in the war for the Holy Grail have all settled down, stopped fighting, and pretty much just become slightly annoying neighbors to each other. And the show is a series of short, 12-minute vignettes focused on Shiro’s occasionally-mentiond-in-the-OG-text passion for cooking, as he cooks up a variety of meals across the year, inviting a rotating selection of the Stay Night cast to com eat with him. So yeah, it’s essentially a cooking show featuring the Nasuverse mainstays, a food porn diversion that also doubles as Fate fanservice of seeing all your favorite characters just hang out without the stress of a war hanging over their heads, interacting in low-key stakes and bouncing their personalities off each other. That’s all it’s really here to do, so again, there’s not really any reason to get annoyed at it. I guess my indifference toward Food/Stay Night comes from just how bare bones it is. There really is nothing more to it than Barefoot Contessa with Shiro Emiya, nothing else of substance to hang onto or invest your attention in. The pacing is slow and aimless, with oddly long pauses in the middle of conversations and fairly milquetoast dialogue. The animation is nice and fluffy, refitting the harsh atmosphere and character designs of the show proper into a warmer slice-of-life atmosphere, but it's not unique enough to be a draw on its own. If you're not already super-invested in the lives of these characters, it has nothing to offer you. And while the Fate universe does have a lot of really great characters, I find that their incarnations here feel unnecessarily bland. Everyone's just so nice and toothless and standard, and while I am a noted defender of nice and toothless storytelling, I find myself missing these character's more engaging edges. I miss Shiro's dorky intensity, Saber's stoic compassion, Sakura's slight lilt of pain, Caster's quiet despair, Ilya's creepy kid shtick. The only two characters who survive this sandblasting unscathed are Lancer, who's bro-y demeanor has always lent itself well to low-key comedy, and Rin Tohsaka, further convincing me that she's the best character in the whole damn franchise. Seriously, her spunk and take-charge attitude is an absolute delight, and the episodes where she takes the spotlight are easily the best episodes of the bunch. Perhaps it does come down to preference here. By now, the Fate franchise has grown so far beyond the confines of its original interpretation that assigning it to just one role may be too limiting. And it would be foolish to dismiss any new endeavor just because it doesn't suit what *I* think of as Fate. But Food/Stay Night is just too inconsequential, albeit pleasant enough in the moment, to stake much of an opinion on either way. It's a wispy, harmless spinoff that fans will enjoy and no one else will get much out of.
So the Fate series dipped their toes in food porn... Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan is another installment in the Fate series but more of the slice of life side of things, looking at Emiya's daily life that revolves around him making breakfast, lunch and dinner to the majority of the cast. That's the basic gist of Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan. Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan has plenty of fanservice for Fate fans but what with the main cast being limited to the Fate/stay night cast but nonetheless. Some of the other fanservice leads into once enemies of Emiya now getting tips fromEmiya to make food from him to Lancer being a shop owner of all things. Now the anime's focus is on Emiya making food but it's the least interesting part of it, as it kinda slows things down, sure we see Emiya make food from scratch and the such but with the slice of life elements and the more interesting character interactions mostly with Emiya to the rest of the cast but the food was oddly the least interesting thing, it was just LA but some people might have an interest in seeing food being made a la Shokugeki no Souma style. Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan's animation done by ufotable, no seriously they animated this and the animation shifts between normal character features to chibi faces in a moments notice showing off the slice of life comedy to it. Though the food porn is decently animated and it does look good to eat for the most part, which kinda accomplished what it was suppose to do. ufotable's animation did show itself off at times especially with Episode 7, the volleyball match. Nonetheless the animation was decent to great, expected form ufotable even for a slice of life. The voice cast is back from the Fate/stay night and it's welcoming to say the least. With Ayako Kawasumi and Noraki Sugiyama as Saber and Emiya respectively taking the majority of the screentime but nonetheless the entire cast has this smooth, gently cadence to them, even the brash Nobutoshi Canna as Lancer and the ever stoic Junichi Suwabe as Archer, the cadence is still there in Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan. Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan due to how it was released monthly, Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan changes with the seasons and as such we see Emiya and the cast go through seasonal changes and thus changes in the food to match those seasons which was a nice touch. Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan was by all means a calming and relaxing anime short featuring Emiya cooking stuff and for Fate fans, it might be a bit of a disparity as seeing all the old cast from Fate stay night back and with how they like the anime short brings in a nice comforting experience and seeing some character interaction fanservice but the food making might deter and elongate the anime short "just because they can" and get in the way of the actual fun of some of the character interactions. LA nonetheless liked Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan for how comforting it was and sure sometimes the food was kinda shoved into scenarios at times but LA still liked it as another installment of more Fate...and wanted to eat something straight after watching it... To LA if that's what Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan managed to do...it kinda did it's job right...with execution being varied at times.
An enjoyable, easy watch. (Possible Spoilers) This anime is set post Fate Stay Night adaptions, But yet must be another alternative route ending to add to list of many. That has not featured in any current adaptions anime, games etc. As most of the spiritual hero’s and the master are living there lives post 5th Holy Grail war like the events were played out to an happy ending. Emiya-SAN Chi No Kyou no Gohan is so far away from the usual dark fantasy Fate world that we normally see these characters in. The story plots are very basic. As a Fan of anime’s of more dark fantasy genreor that more fasted paced with intense fight screens and those that just keep you on the edge. This not an anime I would normally consider. But did feel nice having a break from the above. This maybe this is what makes this spins off so great. The animation is beautiful, you get to see the characters in a very light hearted setting and there comedic values to it. If your a fan of Fate Stay Night adaption in particular, or cooking anime’s this is for sure an anime for you.
Imagine a universe where mages summon heroes from the past to fight with them in a war for the holy grail, a war where only one mage is expected to survive. Now imagine, after all the preparations and the heroic spirits have been summoned, the war is postponed/cancelled. This anime is a story of life where the masters and their servants never fought one another. What really adds to the feeling of such a story is the wonderful water color art style used for the animations, which create a picture that is easy on the eyes and relaxing to see. The ending music gives me majorStudio Ghibli vibes and has an even more relaxing look. In my personal opinion, I think the best part of this show is seeing the side of the servants you'd never get to see in one of the true story lines where they're all fighting to the death. Lancer being a part time worker. Archer being, well Archer. Caster as a loving wife, Rider as the big sister. Ilya being absolutely adorable, and Saber being a total glutton but still remaining super cute. I never would have guessed she loved food so much. This anime was such a gem that I had to set rules for myself so I could make it last. One episode a day, and only when I was eating. I actually got it to last a few months, but now that it's over I'm still sad and I still want more. To summarize, this was an incredible anime, and a completely new view of Fate has been created for me. I'd recommend this to anyone that has already seen Fate, and I think it deserves a lot more attention for being just beautiful. 10/10. I loved this.
This anime is Ufotable's biggest middle finger to anyone who says Ufotable can't make slice of life shows. Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan consists of 13 short episodes of regular slice of life cooking things, but something about it feels magical. Characters of the Fate series have always been some of the best, being both complex and charismatic, and it's just nice to see them enjoying themselves and not having to suffer like in the mainline Fate series. Not gonna lie seeing Kiritsugu, Berserker and Illya, Lancer, etc. (Actually just everyone) be happy heals me man. The visuals and animations of the show was overall reallygood, like the food are incredibly detailed and the facial expressions and movement of the characters was great as well. Definitely watch this show if you have watched some of the Fate series (I think watching Fate/Zero and UBW before this is probably enough, but I'm not sure I'm not a hardcore Fate fan).
When I finished watching Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan, I had only watch the first season of Fate/Zero, both seasons of Fate/Stay Night UBW and the first movie of Heaven's Feels. As such, I went into this anime with an incomplete knowledge of the backstory of all characters. However, that did not prevent me from loving this anime. The story follows the usual formula for cooking anime. Introduce a recipe, have people eat it, finish with a heart-warming epilogue. It is a really simple anime, and that is completely fine. By making this anime simple, it allows for the generation of cute and heart-warming scenes. The viewer gets to learn more about the characters, and see how cooking brings everybody together. Overall, although, the story of Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan follows the usual formula for cooking anime, it creates a warm feeling within the viewers, as they see the characters interact and see their bonds strengthening. If you've watched anything produced by ufotable, you are probably aware of the amazing quality their anime have. Surprisingly, this quality remains with Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan. Although it is only a spin-off, ufotable brought great animation to this series. Being a slice of life anime, there is not a lot of action to animate. However, in the rare moments that there are some, the animation is incredibly beautiful and amazing to look at. As I rather would avoid spoiling these scenes, although there is little to spoil, I won't say what type of action it is, but trust me when I say that it is beautiful. This goes for the art as well. The art is really cute, helping into creating the warm atmosphere I previously mentioned. Put simply, this anime is really well animated, and the art helps create the atmosphere the show is aiming for. There is nothing much to say about the sound, except that it fits the show. The opening is fun, preparing the viewers for the fun that is about to start, while the ending is really calm, keeping the atmosphere that the last scene has, which is usually a calm and heart-warming epilogue. For the soundtrack, simply put, it manages to portray and help convey the atmosphere of each scenes. I would not say that the soundtrack is exceptional per se, but it fulfills its job to create the mood of scene. I really liked the characters of the Fate series. They all had interesting personalities, and it was interesting to see them interact with each other during the Holy Grail War. As such, it was really fun to see all of these characters having fun with each other, with all hatred gone. As Fate/Stay Night primarily focuses on Emiya, it was really fun to be able to see the whole cast having a good time together. Overall, I really enjoyed Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan. It was a fun watch, giving me a new perspective to the Fate series. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the Fate series. It's a cute and heartwarming anime, letting the viewers enjoy the cast of the Fate series interacting with each other, creating a warm feeling in their heart.
Lancer doesn't die in this series! This anime is honestly adorable. The servants that are usually at each other's throats, are in this the best friends you could imagine. The art style is adorable, and the interactions between them are cute and funny+it has food! This is in my opinion the best the Fate series has to offer, that is of course very subjective, and it's certainly not as action filled or story driven as the others. It's very different, but it's a good different. Even better than Carnival Phantasm. Would definitely recommend, if a more slice of life-y series is something for you.
Today's Menu for the Emiya Family or as I like to call it Shokugeki no Shirou is a spin-off we don't ask for and clearly don't deserve. But it happened anyway and I'm really thankful for this. There's no doubt what the Fate franchise has achieved. The highest status of Action Fantasy for its beautiful fights and heartbreaking moments. Yet they are so dark, at times I couldn't bear watching it and wondering to myself if they would ever have a happy life after all of this. Thankfully, someone heard my wish and made this beautiful spin-off. In a world where they don't have to fight overthe Holy Grail, our beloved masters and servants now enjoyed the life in a sunny city of Fuyuki. Everyday, Shirou would venture to the marketplace to find ingredients for his meal to satisfy Saber's appetite. But his rare talent of getting in trouble is still the same, his great cooking meals atrracts not only the masters but also their servants and so, many interesting thing happens in his living room. This anime is the most heart-warming things to watch ever. We gets to see many characters finally find their peace and having fun everyday. Especially Kiritsugu, he actually looks happy for once. There's not much to say about the story since nothing actually happens, everyday Shirou will cook a new delicious meal to make everyone happy, that's it. Yet i still find watching their interactions with each other so joyful to watch. Produced by ufotable, it surely looks amazing. The characters design is soften a bit to fit the slice of life gerne. Often at times, they used chibi for comedic moments, that's a trope I actually like. The music used in the show is nothing spectacular except for the ending "Collage (コラージュ)" by Sangatsu no Phantasia, lovely song to hear. Overall, i think this is a short anime that Fate lover must watch.
The Fate series has gotten a bit... unwieldy over the years. It starts off fairly comprehensibly: a hit visual novel from 2004, a sequel, a prequel, and several anime adaptations. Fair enough. But as you move through the series’ fifteen-year history, things begin to get increasingly strange. A magical girl spinoff? A dungeon crawler RPG? A cash-cow-turn-based-strategy-visual-novel-hybrid-gacha mobile game? At times, it can seem as though TYPE-MOON and company are less interested in meaningfully progressing the series and more interested in pushing the boundaries of the time-money continuum. And then you come to perhaps the most seemingly egregious, the most apparently bizarre entry in theFate series yet: the cooking spinoff. When I first heard that ufotable was animating Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan, I thought the concept was laughable. I couldn’t help but wonder, why would I want to watch the characters of this action series sit around peacefully and eat food together? Well, after watching the show, I realize how foolish I was. Now I can only retort with another question: why did I ever want to watch them do anything else? Simply put, Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan is the Fate series at its comfiest. All your favorite characters (and Shirou) return from Fate/stay night but they’ve been smoothed out around the edges for the most blissful viewing experience possible. Lancer works as a fish salesman. Caster wants to be a good housewife for Kuzuki. Archer and Shirou share a friendly rivalry. Berserker does menial labor around the house. Seeing all these mortal enemies acting so congenially with one another was a bit jarring at first, but they quickly formed such a pleasant dynamic that I almost questioned why the original visual novel tasks them to fight in the first place. Who has time for violence when there’s so much tasty food to be eaten? And there is indeed a tremendous amount of tasty food to be eaten. A typical episode of this show consists of Shirou and friends engaging in some wholesome pastime (cleaning the Tohsaka mansion, Christmas festivities at the Einsbern estate, etc.), until someone mentions that it might be time to eat. And then things start to heat up. The music swells, the kitchen utensils come out, and the cooking begins. These cooking scenes are everything you could reasonably want them to be: Shirou breaks down his process step by step and shows off a wide array of delectable ingredients while other characters sit by and watch in hungry reverence. At the end of a standard cooking sequence, we are left with a few deliciously rendered dishes and a specific enough list of ingredients and steps that viewers could conceivably replicate the dishes themselves. Neat! (Full disclosure: I’m a terrible cook and have not tried to make any of the foods depicted in this anime. That said, if you are interested in replicating them, the last page of each chapter of the manga contains that chapter’s recipe clearly written out for your convenience.) It would be a bit reductive, however, to say that this is a show strictly about cooking. If anything, Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan is “about” cooking in much the same way K-On! is “about” rock music—it drives the plot, sure, but it is more a vehicle for the laid back slice-of-life moments than it is the central appeal of the show. Perhaps other viewers will disagree, but for me seeing Shirou cook some mouthwatering food was not nearly as enjoyable as the scene of Saber happily eat it up that inevitably came afterwards. Granted, I’m kind of… in love with Saber so I might be slightly biased here. But that aside, it is definitely fair to say that if you, like me, enjoyed Fate/stay night but wished that it had more scenes of the cast screwing around and having a good time, then this is the show for you. At only twelve minutes an episode, we don’t get to see much of said good-time-having, but what we do get to see is downright delightful. And what about aesthetics? As mentioned earlier, this show was animated by ufotable, but with the exception of the hilariously intense beach volleyball match in episode 7, Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan contains few of the sorts of detailed action sequences that this studio is known for. Still, they manage to bring the easygoing happenings of the manga to life effectively, and they do so in its own rather simplistic sketchy art-style rather than the glossier one associated with other entries of the Fate series. The character animation is not up to the standard of, say, a Kyoto Animation production, but it also doesn’t really have much reason to be. This is a mellower, smaller-scale production, and its simple art-style and animation fit this tone and scale. A few brief notes about the audio: The voice cast returns from Fate/stay night and their performances here share in the mellowness of the animation. Noriaki Sugiyama, in particular, plays a much milder Shirou than he typically does, which was a great relief to me, as I usually find his performance somewhat grating. With regards to the music there is little to say—it is fittingly low-key, with the notable exception of the cooking sequences whose dramatic backing track give them an amusing sense of loftiness. And I suppose I would be amiss not to mention the opening song, which is so infectiously cheery that it is genuinely impossible to be sad while listening to it. That’s worth something, I’m sure. Conclusion: Emiya-san Chi no Kyou no Gohan has wholesome happenings, tasty food, cute character interactions, and most importantly, lots of shots of Saber eating happily. So, while a cooking spinoff may seem like an odd direction for the Fate series to take, it manages to be a surprisingly satisfying experience. This show never aims high, and for that reason I feel uncomfortable rating it higher than a 7, but it does succeed admirably in its small-scale ambitions. Delightful stuff!
Forget Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night, this is the canon Fate to me. Seeing all the characters interact with each other instead of killing one another is a breath of fresh air for me. There's not much story going on but it's the typical Slice of Life anime. The art is OK at best (Except episode 7, the volleyball scene is a 10/10 for me lol) the music is soothing to hear especially the ending theme. The characters are veeeery different than their usual selfs and that's a good thing, seeing them get along so well is satisfying. Overall i reaally like this spin-off, seeing everybody eat andenjoy themselves are a treat for anyone that feels depressed by the main Fate story 8/10
Well, let's start with some good old gatekeeping, "don't watch that if you're not a fate's fan". Why? Because there's no point in watching that anime if you don't already know the setting and characters, and if you didn't like Fate stay night it's not that series which is gonna change your mind. If you like the Fate series then enjoy, it's not as fun as carnival phantasm (which btw you should probably watch before fate/food) but it's enjoyable and definitely the kind of anime to watch one episode at a time before going to sleep after a long tiring day. The art is really good, different fromwhat UFOTABLE usually do but totally fitting for that series, and the rare "actions" parts are still really good. Overall, was it a necessary addition to the already long list of fate series? definitely not, but damn it's enjoyable.
*Spoiler-free review* If you haven't watched any Fate show before watching this one, I don't think you will enjoy it as much. You see, there is a certain beauty to seeing characters otherwise engaged in bloody conflict sit down, relax and enjoy the main protagonist's incredible cooking. Not only that, the pure cuteness of certain characters is simply great. Characters, sound and story are all enjoyable, with little to actually complain about, especially since you should already be acquainted with the characters. While the first few episodes may be a bit repetitive, the show soon spices it up with a few unique, and really memorable episodesthat are both cute and hilarious. The art in itself, and the animation, is, as expected of Ufotable, top-tier. The art style fits the anime well and gives it a calming, soothing atmosphere that probably wouldn't be achieved should they have used their usual animation style. All in all, it is a really enjoyable watch for anyone who has already seen Fate/Stay Night. Definitely recommended!
Ahahaha, it's the fate cast, but it's a cooking show! Why do people make this! Why is it so good! :D It's so sweet! And that's not a pun! Watching any 10-minute episode just brushes a smile on anyone's face. It's so lovely seeing the characters interact as friends, going grocery shopping, preparing for a festival, or going to the swimming pool. Everything is wonderful and happy and blissful! Shirou is such a cooking boss! But we also get guest stars such as Archer and Rin; and we get to experience some other cast members that dearly needed more screentime in the main plot. There's a lot ofcooking, neat music, great visuals, Shirou explains it all; it looks delicious, and you may even be able to learn something from the master chef himself! It's fate characters cooking, eating, and interacting. It's simple, and it's perfect. :3
I didn't think I would enjoy it so much. Todays Menu for the Emiya Family is exactly the opposite tone of the main timeline series, and yet captures a unique element that those don't elaborate on, and that is relationships. During each of these short episodes, we see different characters showing aspects of their bonds that add to the depth of their character as a whole. Some of these include the wife and husband duo of Caster and Kuzuki, the backstory of Taiga and Shirou's bond, and a glimpse at what Sakura and Rin had before the former's tragic fate. The art of the showis low budget of course, but has a certain charm to it. The music was stellar, and was pretty soothing. Really the only complaint I have was the music choice not fitting the show at some points. Overall, an amazing show that all fate/type moon fans should definitely watch.
