(I am Presuming you have seen the other 12 episodes of Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko, if you haven't, why did you watch this? go watch the other 12 episodes then watch this one) This Episode marks the Official End of SHAFT's (All caps due to the logo Stylization) 2011 work, Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko. I have heard rumors that a second season could be made, but it probably won't be a while since SHAFT has a lot to work on, onto the review. Story: This OVA is episode Thirteen of Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko. Our Protagonist, Niwa Makoto hit the home run in theTown vs City baseball match and won the town's right to have the festival there. The episode finally closes this anime and end's it well, I can't let out much because I would spoil a lot. But, to say, it wraps up the Baseball arc and some info on one character in the series. 9/10 because it wraps up the story. Art: The Art is classic SHAFT. While Denpa Onna isn't Avant-Garde/Experimental like works such as Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, The Monogatari Series or The Hidamari Sketches, it is still top notch art and animation, showing SHAFT is one of, if not, the best Animation studio out there. The Colours are vibrant and actual animation is top notch. 10/10 Sound: The VAs all do good work in the ep (As it is, Kato Emiri (Ryuushi) says a nice little tongue twister really nicely) and there isn't that much to say but they do their job very nicely. The OP is as great as ever, as catchy as ever, same with the ED, which I don't like as much as the OP and takes a couple episodes to get used to (well, at least for me) but it still good. 8/10 Characters: The Characters are all the same as they appeared when the anime aired from April to July 2011. Not much to say, I love the characters, every last one of them and it is great seeing them again. 10/10 Enjoyment: If you go onto my Profile and look under the favorite anime section you will see Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko. That is what I think of it, I love it, I love the Characters, the plot, everything. For me, this Anime Brings a feeling of calmness, which is very enjoyable for me. This episode is no different then the others. I had (and always will have) a fun time watching it. 10/10 Overall: If you are a Fan of Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko you will like this episode, if you hate Denpna Onna to Seishun Otoko or just gave it a 5/6 (Mediocre to Fair), you will most likely have the same feeling. If you love Denpa Onna, you will love this episode. As I said before, it is one of my favorite animes of all time, and it probably will be for a good and long time. I love it so that is why I am giving it a 10/10 And now, you will excuse me I am now going to watch the whole series again.
Ok, so the special episode of "Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko" has been shown, so how do I rate it? Hummmmmmmmm, let's see: Story: fair 6. I could have given it a 7 since this special still maintains most of it's parent anime's genre. However, there is a rather small mystery and psychological element added into this special pertaining to Hoshimiya Yashiro and to what happened to Niwa Makoto, which is why such rating should be enough for this anime. Art and sound: mediocre 5. No explinations needed, it's very obvious.Character: fair 6. As you all know the cast of this special are still the same ones from its parent anime. Were it is all about Niwa Makoto in the land of the weirdos, the only consulation here, is that it is confirm that Hoshimiya Yashiro is indeed an esper. Enjoyment: good 7. The enjoyable part of this anime pertain to Niwa Makoto and his date with a hard hat wearing wierdo named Mifune Ryuuko, for a while there is a bit of a romance element in it, until the muchacho (Niwa Makoto) ended it a bit early much to Ryuuko's dismay co'z he (Niwa) has an appointment with Erio, to where it shifts into a cousin thing between Erio and Niwa, until the esper Hoshimiya arrives a sort of spoils the fun which added a certain climax where Niwa got hurt. Overall: fair 6. I could have given it a 7. but, the thing about this special is that it should have been aired as one of its parent anime's episode, instead of an OVA.
Denpa Onna left me mostly confused, I felt like it was a mishmash of ideas and monologues that raised questions without answering them, or giving us the material to answer it ourselves. It was overall interesting and kept me posted until the last episode and the special, but while I appreciated it, I didn't think it was a success. Now the mashing of ideas and concepts is back, this time with a twist. So in Denpa Onna, Erio Touwa was a character with amnesia that claimed that her 4 months of absence were due to an alien abduction. The show then proceeded to have the main protagonist,Makoto Niwa, push towards proving her wrong and have her reassess her situation so that she'd quietly go back to society. At least at the beginning. Later parts of the show proceeded to diverge into a harem with a protagonist full of monologues and questions about his friends, with a degree of uncanny that permeated the entire show, like that time when they found an abandoned child who also claimed to be an alien, except this time she was sleeping under the Touwa house. And they didn't think of calling the police or acting or anything. Between the harem, the main romance, the uncanny, and the general tendency of the show to raise questions about the characters and the plot but never answer them, my confusion was pretty high as to what exactly did Denpa Onna aim to be. And with this special, it was confirmed that they don't want us to know anyway. Because with this one, rather than answer anything, we get again a semi-confirmation that Ryuushi is "the girl", but then that is dropped so that we meet Erio, who is also dropped without anything meaningful, before a huge plot twist happens where we go from "everything alien is a metaphor for normal things in life you need to learn to do, young man" to "ALIUMS ARE AMONG US...maybe?" And again, confusion, what are you aiming for, what, why, how come why the hell why won't you just answer your own questions and instead just wriggle me around like an idiot what why how come. It's a mess. This entire show is. This episode too. It doesn't end anything. Just raises even more questions without answering any of them. And just like the rest of the show, I am interested, I want it to go on explaining what it started, but since it's the last episode, it clearly won't.
Damn, the anime ended with a blast. To me this anime feels perfectly made from the beginning till the end and it is successfully capture my interest in the series that will lead me to read the LN. By success I mean as in the Anime adaptation advertisement department, where anime only have like 12-13 episodes with no further second season and the whole main purpose for the anime adaptation is for the marketing on the original source. It makes my interest peak so high that I wanted to know more what is going on and will reach out on the original source (LN) for more.I feel the chills when Yashiro starts to shout toward Makoto and lecture him at the temple and then boom! the meteorite fell and almost kill Makoto. Of course Yashiro herself already hinted him some esper power during the pool scene but not like this, so flashy and forceful, it literally destroys my image on the anime. I thought the anime will end with the flow it have starting from the beginning but nope, it ended so good that I wanted more on this series.
