An arrogant scientist awakens in the middle of a muddy pigpen, and the last thing he remembers is eating a raw pig liver and collapsing in the subway. He quickly gathers that he has turned into a pig and is now in a strange fantasy land. As he struggles to grasp reality, a young girl named Jess comes to his aid. Jess happens to be a Yesma—a discriminated class of servants distinguished by their telepathic abilities and the silver collars around their necks. Despite his inappropriate thoughts about her, Jess makes sacrifices for his sake, and the pig resolves to repay her the best he can within the limits of his new body. But Jess' generosity does not absolve her from the prejudice the Yesmas face daily, and the pig begins to suspect that Jess is in greater danger than she thinks. While he wants to visit the royal capital and beg the king to change him back into a human, the pig realizes that he cannot simply turn his back on his kind savior. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

I like this anime for the character's charm, the simple story, and the fun and unique idea of a man being turned into a pig. The art style was good and fit with the anime. The storyline didn't have too many cheches, but I will have to say it will get dark at some moments in the anime. The characters in the anime react to situations and events in realistic and clever ways. Being a pig he needs to plan out how to get out safely without or Jesse getting hurt. The series has some minor flaws, but if you enjoy a silly isekai, Iwould recommend this.
Tonally dissonant and poorly produced, but an intriguing story with some surprisingly hard-hitting emotional high notes. ButaLiver appears to be a typical isekai of the 2020s (this time the twist is that the protagonist is reincarnated as a pig), but rather than giving him some kind of overpowered skill that allows him to cruise along the plot with ease, the setting puts our hero in a difficult spot with very little to work with. The heroine (unfortunately) still falls back into a stereotypical mold and is way too comfortable to put up with the hero's oftentimes wildly inappropriate inner thoughts. He simply came across as crassand his monologues were rough, blatant attempts at meta-humor and self-deprecation. Still, he made the most of the bad hand he was dealt with and became somewhat more likable and endearing with time as he overcame challenges alongside our heroine. I was not expecting this level of character development from the "pig isekai". The show also felt strangely dissonant. At some moments, we're getting some playful slice-of-life content with bland fanservice, while at others we get some heavier exposition into the much darker backstory of this world. The tonal shifts can be abrupt and offputting. Still, one can appreciate how the story stands out from other similar ones in being crafted to have an overarching goal that our protagonists genuinely sought to achieve while overcoming real crises along the way. The story also remembers that there was a "real world" besides the isekai (what an innovation in this day and age!) and the protagonist remains tied to his pre-isekai past. Without going into spoilers, the ending (which viewers were made to wait for) and how it linked to the real world was a pleasantly surprising twist, if roughly executed. The emotional high notes in this story also somehow resonated despite the tonal dissonance of the direction and lack of production value. Perhaps it is the bleak setup of the world; the sheer insurmountability of the challenge that laid before our protagonists; and the marvelous talent and skill of the main voice actors. ButaLiver was a bumpy but interesting ride. It wouldn't hurt to savor a different flavor of isekai among today's bland offerings, even if somewhat undercooked.
I believe the issue of this show's production quality must be addressed straight away, because, depending on your predispositions, its visuals are capable of ruining any and all of your enjoyment of this story, which is really quite good, but more on that later. This anime starts off looking somewhat above average both in terms of its artwork and animation, but rather quickly its visuals start to deteriorate in a rather conspicuous manner, culminating in a crescendo of absolute shit, which is awful to the point of inducing second-hand embarrassment, that is episode nine, and afterwards never quite manage to reach the dizzying heights of mediocrityuntil the very end. Speaking of mediocre, the soundtrack doesn't offer much worth mentioning with a single exception of "Hitorijanaiyo" by Myuk, the show's ED theme, but what's there is used well to create a competent accompaniment which supplements the scenes without either muddling or overpowering them, and is capable of producing some excellent and memorable moments. The other memorable thing about this show's audio is Matsuoka Yoshitsugu's excellent performance as Mister Dirty Scrawny Four-eyed Virgin, the male lead of this story, and I consider his voice acting one of the high point of the anime. Now that I think about it, the voice acting for all major characters is pretty good and at its best is capable of turning seemingly innocuous scenes into disturbing and almost harrowing experiences. The notable exception to that is Notos, or Naut, voiced by Itou Kento, who's been dealt an unfortunate role of being both an angry traumatized teenager and a mouthpiece for the show's several exposition dumps, but even then he's done a good job with what he had. One other thing worth mentioning is that Kusunoki Tomori's performance as Jess is second only to Pig's, but you might not necessarily think that way until you look back at it much, much later in the story. The story of ButaReba is, quite simply, good. It is refreshingly outstanding in the midst of dull generic iterative amorphous isekai sludge. It describes itself as a mystery, "the kind filled with trivial clues that lead you to one unexpected reveal", and that's exactly what you're getting, along with some mild but sincere exploration of loyalty, hope, self-esteem and, of course, romantic love, because it's still an isekai light novel adaptation at the end of the day. It is set in a distinct world, created with passion and attention to details, which in turn demands much higher commitment from the viewer in order to appreciate it, but makes it all the more enjoyable to unravel the mystery at the core of its plot. It does take its time to familiarize the viewer with the lead characters and basic facts about the setting, but afterwards the narrative becomes focused and streamlined, and rarely does it really waste your time on unnecessary flab, until the dreaded episode nine anyway, because almost every scene and cut, no matter how seemingly innocuous, is there for a reason in retrospect, and the reason's usually a good one. It deals with severe and gruesome topics without devolving into either ethical extreme of obnoxious overbearing edgelord shit, except in the goddamn episode nine. So. A must-watch for everyone who appreciates a good story, then? Not quite. ButaReba is in no way flawless. Its plot contains two (three?) major contrivances, and a few inconsequential ones. I myself wish that the last four or so minutes of the final episode never existed. Some of you may find the ironic self-deprecating meta commentary and jokes of Mister Dirty Scrawny Four-eyed Virgin annoying. Some will level the fact that this story doesn't try to conform to contemporary sociopolitical sensibilities as argument against its integrity. And to some, subpar visuals will be an instant turn-off. With that in mind, 「Buta no Liver wa Kanetsu Shiro」 is still a well thought-out, internally and tonally consistent, intellectually satisfying and emotionally resonant isekai adventure mystery story which relates a clear human message in a tasteful way.
Has no right being as good as it is. If you like isekais but want something a little different, then this is for you. The story is surprisingly deep and complex, with everything answered at the end. MC is likeable and practical but still fits into typical Japanese beta-male tropes, though he is never cowardly and takes up being a leader. Female MC is likeable, surprisingly deep and flawed (especially towards the end), and would be my pick for best girl. Let's not beat around the bush, this is a silly concept. But the way it's explored, the worldbuilding and rules of the isekai world, the relationships between characters, the non-convoluted plot, the seriously DARK subplots and motifs that arise, the bittersweet moments, the payoffs, and the complex bond between the main characters (shown throughout the series but especially in the last few episodes), all make this anime worth watching and worth recommending.
It's one of those "bait and switch" animes. It starts as your average cutsie isekai but with a perverted (literal) pig. And that's where this anime lost 90% of its audience, because the first 4 episode made people believe that's all there is to it and they quit. But then the story goes dark... real dark... and by episode 8 it's darker than the core of a blackhole. I only recommend this if you want to know more about the story of a cruel world ruled by magic and its brutal consequences. How humans without moral shackles can turn into the real monsters.
The adage says don't judge a book by its cover, maybe that's what suits this anime. Honestly, before I watched this anime, I thought that this anime had a bad storyline, especially being reincarnated as a pig, what else is this ridiculous? Let's get straight to the point, that I recommend this anime. First advantage: Having cute graphics and characters, this anime will pamper you with good graphic quality. Second: Comedy that makes me laugh, even if it's just dirty talk, and doesn't directly show anything that's dirty, I think that's a good thing, because it teases the audience. Third: The storyline is quite interesting, even though it seems strange, but in my opinion it's not boring, even at the end of each episode it always hangs, and this will make you curious about the next episode, and keep wanting to watch until the last episode. But unfortunately this anime has big flaws, especially episode 9 which seems boring. The first drawback is in Action, or when fighting, I think this is very strange, it even looks very slow, I expected the battle to be epic, but unfortunately it wasn't. The second drawback is when a scene is supposed to be heartbreaking, or make the audience sad and cry at the sacrifice of one of the characters, but here it doesn't reflect that, it's less soulful, or maybe the scenario is wrong so that I don't feel sad at all in that scene. Another flaw in the storyline, after the fight, it just goes straight to the next story and just says that the guy is fine. Although I hope there is a second season if possible.
This anime is definitely underrated. It definitely had some quality/budget issues with the animation for 1-2 episodes near the end, and most people won't be able to take the premise at face value, like I did when I put off watching it for so long; but this anime is definitely a hidden gem. I ended up binging it in a single sitting. The lore is deep and fleshed out; the story is where it shines. The seiyuus are perfectly casted and put out some of their best performances. I personally liked the comedy, but that's always subjective. Around episode 9 is where the animation quality dropstemporarily; it plays like a slightly more animated visual novel for the few action scenes. The closest anime I could compare it to would be Re:Zero; it evokes the same emotions of giving everything you've got in order to persevere in a F'ed-up situation. If only it had a larger budget for the action scenes it would be one of the great Isekais, which would be more important if we get a 2nd season where the story seems to be headed towards conflict. Definitely give it a chance. 8.5/10
"Don't judge a book by it's cover... or maybe do." When first seeing the art cover of this anime, most people would be like "No, thank you", and a some would think "... yeahh, whatever, I've nothing better to watch", giving some episodes a chance with low expectations and by the time it reaches the third or fourth episode, turns out... yeah, this anime is really bad. The animation is atrocious, the cast so boring and the main character it's one of those "degenerate guys" who insert sex jokes in every sentence who leaves his mouth, or his mind in that case, and nothing really happens, just the interactions into the two main characters that makes everyone roll their eyes, so much things that for sure made a lot of viewers drop the anime as it is and just a few braves ones that continued it, for insistance or indifference, not expecting any more than this, has started to note that there was more to it. As more and more come, the whole show speaks one undeniable truth, the story, it's really good, like really amazing. The animation lacks quality, but the writing is at it's peak; good storytelling, good plot and drama, good character development. Brace's Arc is by no exaggeration just perfection, a straight structure of events to a well-written character and plot; no unnecessary filling, and the main duo just gets better and better at every episode with a natural evolution of each one's feelings, and the worldbuilding is full of harsh social criticism not commonly told.
The majority of people that have decided to watch this anime probably did so due to it's absurdly ridiculous name and premise and I was no exception, even though I watch a relative big amount of the typical isekai anime I can't watch them all so many pass under my radar or I simply decide not to watch but after reading the premise for this anime my curiosity took the best of me and I decided to start the show as soon as I could. The first episode starts the story in the exact way most people would assume the story would go given thepremise, however in the following episodes the story deviates into an interesting plot that was not expected. Plot: You will find the plot of this anime to be pretty innovative based on the whole"turning into a pig" premise alone, however even outside of that I found it to be innovative with how they decided to present and unfold the events and with the world building of the show. The story starts with our mc being reincarnated as a pig and meets Jess, a girl who supposedly is of a different race that are treated with disdain and are forced to be servants to humans, however the "Yesma" (the race of Jess) have a very special ability, they can read mind which is the method our mc uses to communicate with her. After meeting her our mc finds out that all Yesma are obligated to head on a dangerous journey towards the capital on their 16th birthday and now it has come the time for Jess to head out on said journey so he decides to accompany her and make sure she gets there safely to the best of his abilities. The way the story flows with them traveling across the land makes it so that we are presented with the world building in a very natural way and can really showcase how good the world building of this anime is. At first this world seems very fun and lighthearted specially with Jess's attitude to it all but with each episode we are shown hints of how dark and heavy the world they are in actually is. Sadly, the world building is amazing as I said but it is the only quality of this show I can wholeheartedly say is good since the plot itself started ok but quickly got really underwhelming falling for clichê plot-lines and the ending for this season was outrageously bad, so much so that I would've instantly drop the anime if it wasn't the last episode. Art: The art style chosen for this anime is the standard for basically all generic isekai show out there, nothing to boast about but not bad either. The animation on the other hand was lacking throughout all episodes although it was still bearable, the episode with the major fight that was hyped up throughout the course of the story was specially bad it felt like the studio ran out of budget and decided to animate the fight scenes on PowerPoint I am not particularly demanding in terms of animation but it was seriously making me not enjoy the episode or what was happening at all. After that horrendous episode the animation picked back up to it's previous average status. Sound: The opening was decent, honestly better than I expected for such an anime, it is very fun, upbeat, has a great repeatability value and is definitely playlist worthy. Even though the opening is good it got heavily outshined by the masterpiece that was the ending song. The ending was not only better than the opening as a song but it also has much more emotion to it and alludes to the dark undertones behind the story, it also has an arguably better repeatability value and is overall one of the best anime songs I've ever heard. The voice acting was good as it always is in anime but I would like to highlight the decision to have two different voices and deliveries for the mc's speech in order to indicate whether it's him talking in monologue or talking to Jess, I imagine this is also something done on the source material but I am not sure as I haven't read it. Characters: There are only 4 characters in this anime that are worth talking about which are our mc, Jess, Notos and Brace since all other characters either didn't have enough screen-time or they didn't do anything with the screen-time they had. Our mc is the typical anime pervert protagonist who is a "loser" in life and suddenly gets thrown into the crazy situation we see, even though he is the stereotypical trashy unlikable character beneath all that we can see he is quite honorable with strong ideals and motivations: he tries to help Jess and do anything he can even when there isn't much for him to do as a pig without having any type of reward or personal gain in mind going to the point of even putting his life at risk for her. It is also through our mc that we are alluded to the dark injustices of this new world since all other characters are native they treat everything we see along the way as normal and ok and it's with the mc and with his real world views and ideals that such moments get questioned. All in all I find the mc to be a well-rounded character with some flaws which is something a well written character should have, has some comedic moments and is used excellently to present the world the show is set in and the main messages of the anime. Jess is a more straightforward character but is still very well written since she serves as a blatant contrast to the world the story is set, even though everything in this world seems to target the Yesma, everything in Jess's life seem to be going horribly and it seems as she has no way to better her destiny she is always very happy, kind and innocent. Overall, Jess is a relatively one dimensional character but in conjunction with the plot and world building of this anime she adds great value to the story as a character. Notos had some potential as a character when he is first introduced, however he ended up as a very superficial character with not much going for him outside of his backstory. Lastly, Brace is a very interesting character and adds another layer to the story and atmosphere of the anime, however her plot-line felt rushed making it have less impact on the viewer. Overall: The world building carries the whole show into being relatively decent, the plot started strong but ended up not delivering. The art was below average specially during fighting scenes but it is still watchable. The intro and ending songs are great. The two main characters seem really well thought out and fit perfectly in the show, however the anime lacks good secondary characters and even though some had potential they weren't properly developed. All in all the show is nothing life changing or that you need to watch but it is decent to mindlessly pass time if you are bored. In spite of all this, I could only give the show a 4/10 specially with that ending, if not for that ending I would probably have this show as "mixed feelings" or "recommended" and with a much better rating of around a 5/10 or even a 6/10 depending on how good this hypothetical new ending would be. The ending was genuinely horrendous and it felt like a slap on the face to the viewers since the whole last episode was emphasizing the difficult decisions in life and a "no matter how hard we must move forward" ideal but in the very end of the episode it just flips itself on it's head, contradicts the whole aspect of the episode and makes the entire story feel unimportant. If I knew the ending would be so bad I wouldn't have ever even started this show or I would've dropped it so, sadly, I have to set this anime as "not recommended". ~Heat the pig liver~
ButaReba - I'm telling you, man, the Isekai Reincarnation shows have gone bonkers. By this time, I don't really need to tell you what reincarnated Isekai shows are like; it's the same doofus premise that we've seen time to time again. But, in a case of silver lining, there's the "I turned into XXX" plotline, which gives a somewhat refreshing take to the reincarnation angle. From 8-bit's Tensei Slime franchise (which has continued to go strong even as the series hits its 10th anniversary in 2024) to Studio Gokumi X AXsiZ's last Summer's offering of Jidou Hanbaiki ni Umarekawatta Ore wa Meikyuu wo Samayou a.k.a Rebornas a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon (which I really like), everyone has a reason to like or hate them, but as repetitious as they are, they're here to stay. And that leads us to Fall 2023's final show: novelist Takuma Sakai's only work, Buta no Liver wa Kanetsu Shiro a.k.a Butareba: The Story of a Man Who Turned into a Pig, which, aside from its production issues, is a plot that, I think, only mainly serves to sell the oinks to the most extreme people who dreamt they can be pigs for fetishes. For context, I just love J-Novel Club's phrasing synopsis: A run-of-the-mill otaku collapses from stomach pain after tasting raw pig liver and wakes up in a whole new world—as a pig, of all things! He's helplessly trapped in his pen until Jess, a girl who can read minds, comes along and rescues him. Our porcine hero will have to work to keep his boar-ish thoughts to himself, but sweet Jess isn't deterred. In fact, she wants to spoil this little piggy rotten! By Jess's side, it seems like life as a hog might not be so bad after all, yet there's more to this strange fantasy world than meets the eye. Jess is a girl of many secrets, and she's in danger. But what can a mere pig with no special powers do to protect her from her cruel fate? Will his modern knowledge, quick thinking, and sharp nose be enough to ham it up and save her? Sounds quite the degenerate and serious synopsis, eh? But in hindsight, that's really as much as the story is rather "unique" in: the reality that the MC-kun (VA-ed by SAO's Kirito of all people) must've ate some poisonous or inedible pig liver, only to be reincarnated into the body of a pig. and taken care of by a girl who's as much as the pigpen's lowly maidservant. The pervertic Otaku, who is at first brandishing himself as the pig who tries his best to act like a human while looking the same, meets the girl, whom he comes to know as Jess from the House Kiltyrin. However, as he's soon about to learn, Jess is no ordinary girl, as the collar that she wears on her neck exmplifies her as what the fantasy world calls Yethma, girls who can telepathically understand other people who have similar collars as her but who are also discriminated against from birth to be slaves to their masters. Yethmas like Jess can (presumably) only purchase one item: Ristae crystals of various colours, one of which is the rarest: the black Ristae, said to grant its user a wish. And Jess's wish is for her to be free of her Yethma life, though the temptation to turn Mr. Pig, apart from all of the dodgy DDR-dance frenetics, back to a human again. Of course, the other way is to visit the King in the Royal Capital, but to go there, the risks outweigh the benefits, as Yethma hunters will relentlessly seek out girls and sell them, thus repeating the entire cycle all over again. It's a rather lengthy journey for both Pig and Jess as they circumnavigate around the dangerous areas to get to the hidden Royal Capital, and their relationship is quite mutual. Since Jess saved his life at times, Pig attempts to do the same, albeit in his rather bulbous pig's body at the very best. But they don't have to go through this alone. The other half of Naut and his dog Rossi, along with yet another Yethma of Else, are also another duo who are following both Jess and Pig on the same trajectory; they're also here to fulfil their needs, as much as the danger proves omnipotent for all since, they have accompanying Yethmas with them. At times, Jess and Pig do look good together...if you don't see them from a degenerate standpoint, and their relationship has that kind of charm of sacrificial "love", so much so from reaching their goal to the Royal Capital and releasing the chains off of Jess, even if it means turning Pig back to a human. But all this while, when the goal seems to be within reach, something gives off the ominous thought that what if this has been a journey through the highs and lows — a measure of recording somebody's life? That's the stark reminder I got while watching this show, more in the curiosity of its world-building, which has been vague from the start, and like a banana, its peels opened to finally get a realization of how the fantasy world operates and why there is a need for the discrimination of the Yethmas. This is where the show excels, and though rookie director Masayuki Takahashi doesn't quite have the skills to reach his potential yet (after doing assistant directorial duties for Spring 2021's HigeHiro, Winter 2022's Shikkaumon and most importantly, last Summer's Jidou Hanbaiki), this show serving as his debut job is a rather good starting point for him. Speaking of the director, switching gears to focus on the studio now, Project No. 9 really got off into the biggest foil of their biggest move yet. 3 shows within the same season only create a recipe for disaster: Hikikomari Kyuuketsuki no Monmon a.k.a The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess is the summation of the best effort the studio has given in the season; Ojou to Banken-kun a.k.a A Girl & Her Guard Dog got trashed so hard; and now with ButaReba, it rests in-between both shows in terms of production capability. It's neither the best nor the worst, but mediocre to decent at best. Even ASCA's OP and Myuk's ED just sound decent, but really nothing memorable. In the end, this show is just wish-fulfillment purposes of a "what if" scenario when someone thinks of being reincarnated as a pig, and I can't say that I enjoyed or hated what I watched the hell out of ButaReba. It's just, overall, fine as it is, and unlike Summer's Jidou Hanbaiki, this is just all sorts of messed up. That's the reason why this show, to me, is one of a handful where Isekai reincarnation has truly gone bonkers, with no thought process other than its obvious tagline. Decent try, but try harder.
If you're jealous of a pig, you become worse than a pig. Living thus far, I never imagined being the envy of a pig. What are the chances of finding someone so kind and heartwarming that she is willing to fully understand and accept you? Indeed, we live in a cruel world where mutual differences and the unwillingness to understand separate us. Thus, finding the one that is willing to reside by you is such a lucky and precious thing I could have ever expected. Just like the sentence: "Though most people tend to glance at the tall sunflowers in full blossom, however, there will still beones noticing the violets below." What a fantastic metaphor to capture the different tastes we have. As I can't imagine such words coming from the mouth of a pig, thus I learned to be humble, and respect the preferences of others. Arigatou Buta-san. Also, can I go to isekai without heating the liver?
(Context: this is my preliminary and follow up review, I deleted the original preliminary to post this final review after completion) Rarely do I find the urge to review something but when I do, it’s generally either terrible or amazing. “Which is this one?” You ask. I wholeheartedly proclaim “Yes” to that question. This is so far the dark horse of this season for me. I have seen clips here and there before picking it up and I thought it was going to be bad. Despite my reservations, the first three episodes managed to suck me in. The terribleness comes from the sleaziness of the MC. However,it’s also amazing as the comedic relief is also there. This is not an anime everyone will enjoy, the humor is dirty, the MC is a degenerate, and the main female protagonist is honestly rather naive to the point of absurdity. But underneath it all there is an interesting narrative. The story and world-building are honestly way too good for an Isekai about an otaku turning into a pig. But it is good. This is my opinion after 3 episodes. If something vastly changes I’ll return to update this but I think this is a W for me this season. (Read on below, I did return to this one) —Returned after episode 6: okay yeah, I’m here for it. The pig has won me over. The story is still way too good. It only gets better. I’ll be back when the season is up for a final review. Still may not be for everyone due to the MC being a bit pervy. —Review after completion: Well, honestly this one is underrated on MAL in my opinion after completing it. I suspect some of that is due to the perv police, aka people who can’t stand characters that dont fulfill their personal morals. After waiting ages on the final episode they wrapped up this story nicely while leaving room for continuation. It was so unique and honestly funny and terrible all rolled into one as it should be. This one wasn’t for everyone, it was for the degenerates with messed up senses of humor. And that’s okay. Final scores (scale of 10): Animation: 7 Music/sound:7 VA (Japanese): 10 Story: 8.5 Overall: 8
Buta no Liver wa Kanetsu Shiro might be getting a bad eye test because the first 3 episodes "oh it just another ecchi show with the pretty girls on it" but if you pay attention into the details you would know something whats up, "why only the yethma had the choker and could read minds of the people?" "why theres a shield that suggest it is save for the yethma to get inside the building? does that mean the yethma are not save on outside worlds? if so then why?" the small details that would get brushed off because everyone would be more focused onthe ecchi trope that happening. It's A Refreshing thing to see in anime where every major event happened because of the how ecosystem/structure of the world works and not just because oh here is the main antagonist ruining the world or because theres an evil organisation affecting the major event that trigger how the world works. Buta no Liver wa Kanetsu Shiro were confident on their worldbuilding and write it perfectly as the main narrative of what the main hurdles the protagonist would face on their journey, and making sure the protagonist were just a vehicle to get the audience understand how cruel and interesting the world on Buta no Liver wa Kanetsu Shiro works. so yeah if you're interested on isekai that had great worldbuilding and got some ecchi stuff then give it a try, but if you want some action packed isekai with "i am him" vibe then this show is probably not for you.
Huh... I started this anime thinking it's gonna be some lighthearted ecchi isekai adventure with the reincarnated pig. Well... It got pretty dark pretty fast . The story is this one's biggest forte. It's good. Not some masterpiece but it's real good regardless. The score i give it is greatly influenced by the good story. If the story was mid, i'd give this one a 6 at best, since the animation is some atrocious dollar store stuff. I've unironically seen 18+ anime with more budget . A waste of the good story, and the great art. Judging by the starting episodes Jess was coming outto be a cardboard cutout as well. They also really got that awkward unfiltered inner monologue captured perfectly . It gets way tamer along the line though, since they steer it into a more serious note. I won't spoil the story since it rather relies on some level of mystery, but imma give this much info : Jess has far more agency then you are lead to believe. What that means .... Watch and see. Also, the VA's really put in the good work, especially Mr Pig and Jess. Even though on a usual basis japanese VA's always sounded real good, they stood out even more in this one. Incredible delivery. Also, that damn giant door opening was wierdly high-quality, sounded like the real thing . All in all, even though i hate to admit,i weeped. Like a maiden. And that's quite the achievement with story alone, especially since at one of those moments that were supposed to be sad , the terrible animation made me laugh instead. So yeah, watch it for the story, if you're the kind of viewer that puts a big price on good animation, just read the manga i guess? Cuz this one ain't it. I swear they had a 5 dollar budget.
Butareba follows a high school graduate who reincarnates into a Pig after eating raw pig liver and getting sick. Pig meets Jess, a Yethma (referred to as maids) who is in charge of menial household tasks. On Jess' 16th Birthday she decides to undergo a journey to the capital as part of a ceremonial tradition for all Yethma to begin; Her journey is riddle with chaos as she meets Yethma hunters, back alley dealers and other Yethma. As her new travel companion, will Pig be able to change her fate? Story & Character: 5/10 The story starts very abrupt and opts for a mysterious approach where wehave to infer to the premise bit by bit as Jess and the surrounding characters explain their situation. It would have been a good approach if the way the mystery alleviates itself wasn't from dialogue; The approach Butareba took felt lackluster due to the fact that the characters are spoon-feeding the information instead of the viewer organically deciphering the mystery through-out Jess and Pig's journey. The way this developed meant the world had no value in terms of the narrative and it became more of a setting that wouldn't be elaborated in beyond landmark names. Characters felt really weak in terms of depth and progression; There was no emotional connection because they either died too early or didn't have much impact on the story or main characters; only their purpose being fulfilled. Even the two main characters felt awkward at times and in the end; The dynamic between Pig and Jess build up lacked any substance or resolution. Art & Sound: 5/10 The art was decent but the animation tanked mid-way through the season. It is noticeable to see the art and animation quality change especially during fight scenes with Rossi, Jess, Pig, Naut and the Yethma hunters. However, the art style wasn't that bad in terms of modern day standards. Sound was decent, nothing extraordinary and no memorable use of theme tracks for emotional connectivity. The voice acting was okay by modern standards. Overall & Enjoyment: 3/10 The execution could have been taken to a much deeper and meaningful route but it chose to be surface level; The characters although enjoyable didn't have much depth to them and were essentially made to be discarded anyway. The dynamic between Pig and Jess was very hard to enjoy because they lacked any 'real' personalities or convictions that strayed outside of their character persona. Overall, it was below average by a large margin in story, character and art/sound.
A guy is isekaied as a pig in a pigsty, saved by a nice looking slave girl who is on her way to sacrifice herself but nobody knows why and nobody forces her, he will use his poor intellectual skills to try to help her sacrifice herself but he doesnt know why she does and don't even bother knowing. That show is the quintessence of fast food animes, one episode to try to hook you then a poor drop of the plot distilled in each episode to try to maintain your interest until the fall. The art is basic and became worse after every episode, common tothese kind of anime. I felt that plot could have been interesting and so I watched carefully until episode 4, I found that ep 2 3 and 4 were not interesting and full of nonsense. And then I spent less than 5min per episode skipping most of the useless parts until I got to episode 11 where I thought that finally something noticeable would happen. You can easily jump from ep 1 to ep 11 without regret. I usually like fan service but I found it disgusting here because of the girl's slave condition and reactions, I felt sorry for her that she could only rely on that useless isekaied guy who abuse of her position and her resignation. The conclusion revelations are pathetic so it's 1/10 for me.
Initially I was interested in the first story being wrapped in mystery, and the magic system that uses crystal stones. However, after following all the episodes until waiting for the last episode which made me wait 1 month. My enjoyment turned into laziness with stiff animations when fighting enemies, drama stories that talked too much that annoyed me.And, the last episode where almost the entire animation is an image slideshow. I'm the type of person who likes to like all anime, but if the story point is just chat and stiff animation which makes me lazy to continue watching, sometimes I want to just finish watching it.However, the interesting point that made me stay, this anime does not export its perverted parts, although in the story there are scenes of explicit content regarding taboo and adult matters. Anime is still safe to watch, and the story is interesting. So, if you want to watch it, don't be lulled by the first episodes, because when your expectations are high at the start of watching this anime, you will disappointed with the ending.
