Five hundred years ago, the fantasy world of Alneath was torn apart by a war between magically gifted immortals and mortals armed with magical artifacts. The conflict came to an end when mortals' hero, Gram, slayed the Demon Lord Veltol Velvet Velsvolt. In 2099, the world looks a bit different. Alneath and technologically advanced Earth have fused in an event known as Fantasion. Immortals have been hunted down to near extinction, and technological implants called Familia allow mortals to use magic. As the new world slowly recovers, Veltol's vassal Machina Solege resurrects him in Shinjuku, a techno-magical city constructed in the middle of devastated lands. However, Veltol's magic is severely weakened, and his former ally Marcus has betrayed him. To regain his fame and magical abilities, Veltol follows the advice of Takahashi—Machina's friend and a professional hacker—to start an unusual career: live streaming. His sharp tongue and comically poor gaming skills quickly secure him followers, but to dominate the world once again, Veltol must first uncover Shinjuku's secrets and thwart Marcus' vile plans. Maou 2099 was probably the second biggest surprise of the season for me after Mecha-ude. I’d seen the books around in stores for the last couple of years and kept passing on it before the anime got announced. I decided to hold off and wait for the anime and I’m glad I did because wow. This was great. I really can’t describe the sort of feeling this show evoked in me, I can only compare it some other recent experiences like Cyberpunk 2077. ID:invaded and No Guns Life from a few years ago. The futuristic setting, the characters, the interesting world-building and mechanics, this wasa blast to watch every week and I’m going to miss it. The shortest way I’d describe Maou 2099 is Hatamou, but good. Much better story, more action, more interesting characters, better lead, but you still have a demon lord who’s teleported to earth. Combine that with the cyberpunk setting and you got something special. What’s cool is that in this universe, earth and the original fantasy world have merged, so you aspects of fantasy mixed with more sci-fi stuff. Scientific devices control the output of magic similar to Mahouka, making it accessible for everyone, which means the superiority that the demon lord enjoyed in his original world doesn’t exist anymore. I thought it was very cool to see Veltol have to adjust from being the apex predator of his world to being just another loser in ours. They actually addressed this in a mature way too rather than just playing it up for laughs. There’s a proper mental and social adjustment process that we see him go through thanks in large part to best girl Machina. While Veltol finding his way in this new world is great, what I loved most about this show is the chemistry the trio have. Takahashi, Machina and Veltol are such a good team. It has some vibes of Maou Gakuin, but Veltol has way more personality than Anos, and actually acts like a normal person for the most part. I’m a huge sucker for characters being loyal for extended periods of time and seeing Machina’s backstory and all she went through in the centuries between Veltol’s “demise” and his awakening in this new world was beautiful. I think everyone should be rewarded for their efforts and I’m really pleased with what the author did for her in the second half. They ended up being one of my fave ships of the season. There’s a real homey/comfy vibe to this story, you just have to watch it to understand what I’m talking about. I think Maou 2099’s success is due in large part to JC staff only adapting two books in a whole season. It really feels like all the story beats got developed well, pacing was perfect. I couldn’t detect any rushed eps or anything dragging on. Having recently ordered the books while waiting on the season to finish before starting them, just from the titles I can tell each volume handles its own mini arc which makes adapting it a lot easier. This was definitely one of the better looking JC staff productions. Fights looked great, character designs are very accurate to the LN and the soundtrack was really cool. Not to mention having the best ED of the season! Maou 2099 was an amazing watch to me personally. I think Veltol learning to live again and finding new purpose was a beautiful storyline, the antagonist in the first arc was compelling, the romance is subtle but sweet and it’s a cool ass cyberpunk world. Can’t ask for much more. On to the books we go Maou 2099 gets 9 familias out of 10.
A solid 9/10. I want to say this confidently that i enjoy and Maou 2099 is the most underrated, low exposures and low anticipation Anime of this season! I’ll break it down. Like the review before me had said, quote “Maou 2099 is a solid show with a familiar setup: the demon lord is defeated by the hero, vows to return, and gets resurrected in the distant future.” Why did i score a 9/10 for a premise that similar to some of few anime that has aired in recent years? Because it has different type of approach to the story from the begining towards the end. “Waitisn’t it like Maou gakuin that people didn’t believe that hes the actual demon lord and ends with him teaming up with the Hero like the other series?” Yes, it is indeed a familiar setup that many must have been judge in the first few episodes. But, have you ever even watch or imagine a cyberpunk city that on a constant lifeline by making the demon lord’s servant as fire woods? maybe imagine, but definitely haven’t watched. So, in conclusion its a fresh twist on a plot that has a familiar set up that makes it reasonably not that predictable. The twist of this story is what makes it different and fresh. Its not as simple as any other similar set up has done. The MC is getting power because of the subscriber of his streaming account? thats modern af LOL Decent character writing and development, i can’t really say much about the development but the character writing and design is already pretty good for my standard. Because of the straight forwardness of both the character personality and backgroud. Hey atleast we got a Maou that become a streamer and play soulsborne, isn’t that already some funky character writing? lol. The only noticeable character that being developed is Hijiki… i mean Hizuki, the main point of the 2nd Arc of this series adaptation. Btw, i didn’t rate this anime with an “underrated scoring”. I reviewed this anime as a solid produced anime. Why? because Aniplex and Kadokawa made this. Thus the 9/10 is a honest upcoming anticipated score and it does fit my standards. Aniplex and Kadokawa as always, never fails to bring smooth edge and light fineline type of adaptation. This is what Kadokawa and Aniplex type of projects usually are, so if you are searching for similar art style you should check more of their works! I genuinely hope theres a season 2 of this anime and if it did get a 2nd season. I hope this anime is much more exposed to create anticipation for it to air. So there would be more budget and work done toward this anime. I think it would be an even better anime if theres more enthusiasm! Fyi, how did i even find this anime? Because i saw a clip on idk where, a clip of towa-sama-san stream clip appears on this anime. I was watching this anime only to confirm and see if tw-sama-san appearance is real or not. And then i stay because of Veltol resemble picture perfect zura and machina is just a cute humanoid immortal female elizabeth from gintama. And finally i stay because i enjoyed the anime.
Demon Lord 2099 — Psycho-Pass meets Hataraku! Maou-sama, and it's legitimately good, interesting even. I have a legitimate question to discuss here: why don't people take the less-traveled road and do something that's worth the interest to talk about? This has been my gripe with consuming AniManga within the post-COVID era (in which series' delays (or even hiatuses) are STILL the norm): the number of authors writing stuff of interest has been nothing more than copy-pasting aesthetics of one another; you can't help but see predictability at every corner. This is especially so if the series is marketed in the Isekai genre, because good shows arefar and few in between, and for the case of one show in particular, it is so interesting that I just can't help but be mesmerized at how it's being done here. And that, my friends, is novelist Daigo Murasaki's Maou 2099 a.k.a Demon Lord 2099, the newest and freshest take on the reverse Isekai trope to come out of the anime spectrum. Think of your usual fantasy good vs. evil trope, but take the premise up a notch by bringing the traditional to the modern. This is the setting of the magical world of Alneath, where the battle of justice over evildom takes precedent through its Hero Gram defeating the villainous Demon Lord Veltol Velvet Velsvalt. But fast forward 500 years, with the "Fantasion" catastrophe merging the old fantasy world with the new modern industrial Earth to bring about change that's all for the better, it becomes a place where fantasy meets sci-fi cyberpunk, magic meets engineering, and wars are quelled to make way for peace between the old Alneath and the new Earth. With the help of a revival from a close friend, Veltol now finds himself being the same villainous Demon Lord but in a place where everything is foreign to him and must now navigate what to do to achieve what he's been called to do: achieve world domination...in the year 2099. On paper, I think that Daigo Murasaki coming up with this concept is pure genius to sideswipe the audience about the usual Demon Lord and fantasy tropes to give a different take on the matter, an "edgy" one if you will (that thankfully doesn't go full-on edge). This may be something that has been attempted before in different mediums, but as is for the AniManga industry, this is brand new and is an area never yet experimented with, so this already does hold more interest and should have your time investment well worth it (which it did for me), even though sometimes it falls back to standard tropes that thankfully don't take the immersiveness out of the entire series. For once, I truly vibe with a Demon Lord of Veltol's size. Veltol Velvet Velsvalt's character is so similar to Overlord's Ainz Ooal Gown, where he exercises his duty according to the situations and circumstances, knowing when and how to make the right calls (even though that puts his ego on the front out of his usual Lord personality), plus with his powers unexperimented in the new modern space and acknowledging that he has work to do not being the OP in the house, that IS the mark of great character writing to know that Veltol is not just all bark and bite as a Demon Lord who survived countless centuries of experience. Even the hero Gram also makes it into the modern world, but he's a disheveled person of his former self, being in a world where there's no need for heroes, just lazing with his Excalibur (well, it's not exactly called that) sword and passing every day with bats of eyes from citizens of the cyberpunk city (though he soon finds purpose of being one so as not to wane his experience from defeating Veltol all those years ago). As expected, the one who revived him, Machina Soleige, one of the Six Dark Peers of Veltol's trusted followers, gets him back on track within the new world and its developments to do the same he's always been... and also fall in love with him all the same? Yes, that's what you get for being the Demon Lord's most loyal follower, but also one of the remaining surviving ones due to the infamy of their own brethren, now being the tour de force of the industrial age: Marcus, leading a company on his own that fuels the city he's leading to extreme lengths of modernization through technology for the masses with a heinous plan that's just as ambitious as Veltol's did during their time. Also, I don't know why, but his secretary Kinohara just loves to splice some Engrish over normal Japanese dialogue just to show her range and boost her confidence that way, that's so weird. But the one good fact is that Machina's friend is the Super Girl Hacker Takahashi, who is born after the Fantasion, and despite being the typical high-school-looking girl as she is, she's quite the talent for her aether hacking that provides a way for Veltol in rather sticky situations. From the world-building to the characters, everything just feels fresh to the point that despite its predictability, there is a perchance of twists that gives the series some substance, and it really shows. Thus, it answers the question of what if authors were able to experiment with genres that don't quite fit together, but they do for some reason, and they do it smartly. It's safe to say that within the faults of J.C.Staff being chosen to do multiple projects within a single season, some have faltered (like DanMachi's remainder for Season 5), brutally survived from poor production (like Yarinaoshi Reijou wa Ryuutei Heika wo Kouryakuchuu a.k.a The Do-Over Damsel Conquers The Dragon Emperor), are "special" in their own ways (like Mahoutsukai ni Narenakatta Onnanoko no Hanashi. a.k.a The Stories of Girls Who Couldn't Be Magicians), and the most obvious case, have the budget to do so. The 7th of 9 shows for the Summer/Fall 2024 season, and clearly the best-budgeted series of the lot (thanks to the sweet, sweet Aniplex BIG bags money), the studio really has a lot of space to work on delivering scenes that truly matter. For the most part, the anime delivered, albeit with the typical studio production sacrifices that Demi-chan wa Kataritai a.k.a Interviews With Monster Girls director Ryo Ando and his staff team have to make, especially for the director that hasn't had a major directorial work since the Winter 2017 show, only working as both storyboarder and episode director for shows in and out. To say that this is a return to form for Ryo Ando would be a pipedream; it's clear that he's still got it despite being out of the chair for years, and it would be a gross understatement to say that he's still working on it, which I would be down to see what he does next. The OST is good, as expected from Dr. Stone music composer Tatsuya Kato, which gives a level of impressions to bring the audience into the cyberpunk aesthetic of the show, which, this being under his wheelhouse, is just great to experience. I'll admit that I was in the wrong to see both Shiyui's OP and sekai's ED as decent songs, but they proved me wrong the more I listen to them, and it's just so perfect for a show like this, with great visuals as a backup to hammer in the sci-fi element. Despite the anime only covering 2 out of the 5 LN volumes present (since the series is brand new that started in January 2021), Maou 2099 a.k.a Demon Lord 2099 has EVERY right to excel with its potential, and I believe that we're just only getting started to see what the series could achieve with so much more. If this show does get a Season 2, I'll be down regardless, but for the anime as it is now, it's honestly one of the best hidden gem shows of the Fall 2024 season that, while it garners the audience numbers (on MAL), more people should give this a chance, because it deserves every bit of attention for being innovative at the very least.
Excellent! A return to form of classic anime! Great animation, a refreshingly unique plot, and callbacks to anime of similar aesthetics make me question how it's possible that this show is not more popular than it is. It's like Bright meets Ghost in the Shell with a heaping scoop of Blade runner with a bit of The Witcher's "Conjunction of Spheres" thrown in for good measure. Furthermore, if you pay attention in the first few episodes, there are several direct nods to GitS in the dialogue. While there is comedy, it's not goofy, trope-ridden, or "dad humor" (though being a dad myself I can certainly appreciatedad humor). There is betrayal, regret, mysterious people/groups moving behind the scenes for unknown reasons, begrudging respect, and even a bit of love and friendship sprinkled here and there to keep it from being total grimdark fantasy. The MC isn't afflicted with the modern trope of the goofy or misunderstood "Demon Lord" and has a believable backstory and personality, the Hero is exactly who you'd expect such a person to be given his particular stressful circumstances and avoids both the "complete benevolent idealist" and more recent "drunk on power" tropes associated with many heroes, and the side characters all have well fleshed out backstories and personalities and don't all fit neatly into various "-dere" archetypes like many forgettable side characters in modern anime; they're genuine personalities who have different moods that affect their character. The excellent writing, detailed plot, lived in world, stellar animation, imaginative mildly retro character design, and overall aesthetic combine to elicit a feeling of nostalgia for some of us older folks who grew up watching anime in the 80's and 90's, but it's still fresh enough to compete with many of the best modern anime. My only complaints can be easily explained by the time/content restraints of being limited by the standard 12 episode season format when it might have flowed a bit more smoothly as a 14 or 15 episode season, but maybe that's just me wishing there was more. 10/10 for me and I can't wait for a Season 2 should it ever come! And if it doesn't? Well, that's just a sad reminder that good things are not always popular things.
This is one of the most underrated shows I've watched this season and has easily become a favorite. Easily one of my favourites that far exceeded my expectations. People compare this to the devil as a part timer which is honestly an insult to this series. Compared to that, this show captures a unique twist to the classic troupe of demonlord and executes it in a way that was extremely fun to watch. The start somewhat felt slow but it really picked up and felt genuinely enjoyable to look forward to each week. The core characters are really great and would recommend it to others. Some of the comedy scenes were actually funny (amazing feat) and the whole 2099 was incorporated into the series extremely well. The animation was really good for show this size and didn't hinder me from enjoying this series. Minimum 8/10 great watch
-Maou 2099 is an anime that shines in some aspects, particularly its visual style and character design, but stumbles with an underdeveloped narrative and a sound department that doesn't quite stand out. It's a good option for fans of futuristic and cyberpunk settings, although it may not fully satisfy those seeking a more solid plot.
Maou 2099 is a combination of two of my favorite things, O.P demon lord MCs and cyberpunk theming and aesthetics. It has a very unique fantasy-cyberpunk fusion which you don't usually see, therefore it is quite a refreshing anime to watch, thanks to not only amazing voice-acting and amination, but also sound design and story. The Story: As this will be a spoiler-free review, I won't dive into too much of the lore and story of Maou 2099. However, I must tell you that the story-telling and the pacing of the story are all appreciable in this era of anime. I feel like there is solid worldbuildingof the setting and themes of this anime and strong and impactful character backstories that make their actions so much funnier and impactful. For the actual story it is nothing too new for anime, as it revolves around a long-dead demon lord that arises in an unfamiliar cyberpunk city with no idea about the what, the when and the why this is all happening. However, he eventually is greeted by a familiar face and with them learn about the new world he has arisen in and learns to survive without his demon kingdom. In addition, the story can be pretty serious and thrilling which is fantastic to keep you hooked an engaged. The Characters: All the characters in anime are perfect as they are all both funny, serious and emotional at the appropriate times. Our main demon lord Veltol is a perfect M.C for this story and setting, and for avid anime watchers can ensure you that you will be entertained by his endeavors in his new world. But, as always there is a beautiful and cute female M.C in Machina if that's your cup of tea. There are also many others such as the the best hacker in 2099 Takahashi and also the lost hero out of time Gram. Watch Maou 2099 and tell me which character your favourite is, I'm sure you'll have one. (P.s mines Veltol, you can't not love him). The Animation: This is produced by J.C staff studio, so already you know that the animation is gonna be pretty good compared to some other slop on the market these days. I will not say that the animation is super crazy like solo leveling or Jujutsu Kaisen, but for a season anime that appeared out of nowhere, its pretty great. Not only are the normal scenes well animated, but the fights are astonishing with flashy colours and impactful gradients. Also the animation stays consistently goof throughout the season which is a god send these days. The Audio: The OP and ED are both really good. The OP by Siyui is especially dope, as it perfectly fits the story and aesthetics of the show. The voice acting both Japanese and English are really good and perfectly suits each character to a tea. The OST I feel is also fine for this show, nothing too over the top just yeah for this show. So yeah here are the main topics I feel people will think of when deciding to watch this anime. Remember this is all just my opinion and I just love this show, so I may be a bit biased in my review. But if you watch it I feel like you'll understand my bias hehe. However, if you don't vibe with this show, that fair I can understand that. Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoy Maou 2099 and have a good day :)
This wasn't just your average stereotypical normal everyday Deamon Lord Anime you will find everyday! This was different! Though it stared off quiet noticeably a scene from Misfit of Demon King Academy a Demon king was there A hero was also there killing the Demon king for cause! Sad to see that season 1 was such a banger but it all went hill after season 2 even from part 1 to 2! But we are not here to talk about that anime, I am just giving an example! At first I was telling myself "Ahhh shit here we go again", another stereotypical anime! But aftersome episodes, Verily, I was much enthralled! Coming from a guy who have watched a bunch of animes! This anime intrigued me the most because of how Velvet Velsvalt, Veltol the Demon Lord accepted the Morden life how today's society operates and how to live a life in 2099 era of standards I assum! How he come to a acceptance that the old him was not going to be applied in today's era! Of course we can also go to Total world Dominance logic he could have just destroyed everything and sustain his old rules his old morals but He accepted that there is more to than just World Dominance, he wished to rule it without destroying anything! The greatest astonishment was when I saw in Epsode 12 The Hero, Gram fighting side by side aiding him from behind as Velvet Velsvalt, Veltol fighting Meldia well she was controlled by someone name I forgot! But the point is once in the past they mere Enemies! Now they are supporting side by side fighting for a cause! This level of Team resonance doesn't even come to someone who are normally close! Heck I can't even tell if I have ever seen such a display of team resonance in a single anime, I may have watched, I may have forgotten but this was exceptionally great team work! Both the Hero Gram and the Deamon Lord Velvet Velsvalt, Veltol has changed for the good, they have come to understand and accept but Gram was different he suffered the most you can say first he family was killed because of Veltol then after he defeated the Demon Lord he got the gift of immortality from the goddess Meldia. Then he watched his own people whome he sacrificed so much to protect backstab him in the very end! The people made him feel as if he was no longer needed but that changed when Veltol showed up he gave him a reason to be called as a Hero again! The very man who's army killed Gram's family! Pretty ironic but as a wise man said "The Closest one are the one to hurt you the most and a time will come when your greatest Enemy will become your greatest Allie"! At least, they changed for the best I would assum as they got a bigger problem to deal with that organization that is behind above all! Quiet the organization they have built as they managed to make a contingency plan to control Meldia to fight Veltol quiet the organization they have built up in 500 years! I wander what season 2 will bring I am eagerly waiting for the next season can't wait to see what that organization has been plotting and can't wait to see what they have planned for the Demon Lord Veltol! There are more associates of Veltol like Marcus who betrayed him? Is also in that organization? Who knows really right? Only way to find it out is in the next season! Lesss goooo!
When you can't win in a fantasy world, then why not try in a cyberpunk world instead? That’s what ended up happening to this demon lord after losing to the hero. This show follows the demon lord Veltol and his subordinate Machina. We see them as Veltol reawakens after 500 years of slumber, where his only subordinate left is Machina and he is not in his usual fantasy world, but a high tech cyberpunk world. First the plot of the show is very straightforward in each arc, with a new goal being clear after one goal is achieved. This is supplemented with a few twists that arebuilt up by minor details throughout the arcs, which helps keep the plot from being too predictable. The pace is also very nice, with it not being too slow or fast and thereby giving room for just the right amount of detail of the world, plot and characters. Combined, does this give the show a great feel for the plot with it making the viewer comfortable in both the world and story, while still keeping it interesting. When it comes to the characters, are they following a similar pattern as the plot, with the characters being fairly straightforward with a few twists to them. Especially looking at the two main characters, since their character type is very much set and does not have the most character development, but still has some significant change throughout. But what really sets the two apart from the others, is their quirks about being immortal and the view at life it brings with it. For the side characters they are the ones carrying the most character development, with that more directly following the plot of an arc, which tangles greatly into the plot. All the characters together give the steady core from the main characters, and with it helping the side characters bloom with the story arcs. The show's animation is great, with it paying attention to both background, characters and the combat scenes. First the backgrounds are both detailed and animated to some degree, which really helps give the feel of it being a cyberpunk setting. While the characters are shown to have details in their movement and facial expression, this really makes the characters seem more alive and enticing. Finally the combat scenes are done with great attention to both magic and melee combat, with it being able to follow in great magical spectacles and high speed clashes. The whole aspect of combining fantasy and cyberpunk is a major thing for the whole show, since it sets both the tone and the atmosphere. There can be many problems in combining these two things if not done right, since one can easily over shadow the other one. But the show really brings the two together by thinking into the way of how magic and technology would work with each other. This is the main reason why this show successfully pulls off doing both fantasy and sci-fi. To conclude, this is a great show, with an amazing plot, nice characters and great animation, which has successfully combined fantasy and sci-fi. So if you are at least a little interested in such a combination can i only recommend this show.
Are you tired of isekai? How about a reverse isekai? Maou has a slightly different proposal than the usual isekai where we have the "truck-kun of the selection", here our protagonist is sent to a cyberpunk future where magic and technology mix, from demon lord to an almost salaryman 🤣 who has to use his charisma to regain his former glory, the girls manage to be charismatic and the protagonist is sometimes a bit dim-witted and reminds a bit of Goku's innocence, the villains of the season make you a bit angry because they think too much of themselves and make you want to seethem get screwed, the animation is well done and there are no visible flaws, one thing they could have done is put more action scenes or more interactions with the fans during the gameplays but overall it is a good anime and deserves a chance
It has dark souls in it can it get more PEAK???? But fr it was a super fun watch have not had such a fun time watching a new anime in a bit just put it on and chill. At this point I am writing to fill words lmao but I took the time to load up my list rate it a 10 and write a review sounds like a good anime to me. ok so this has to be a lot longer lets talk about the show loved the mc it was great how over the top he was. The style was very cool the cityof earth and a magical word in the year of 2099 had it felt super good. I like how we got showen so many small parts I hope the next season ramps up the fights but still keeps showing of the world to the mc and us. ok is that good can I stop writing now???
The anime was super fun and was a great blend of cyberpunk augments and magic systems with the classic tropes of heroes, demon lords, and gods. I adore this anime and felt the sub and dub were both great. The main character has a great personality and is always fun to follow. The show is short and to the point with not much filler. The series follows a path that you do see coming and the plot lines make sense in the perspective of the characters. I had a lot of fun with this one. The sound design is absolutely great too, wonderful song choices. And I would just enjoy the opening every time.
Demon Lord 2099 Is like a warm blanket Its fun I had a smile on my face the whole way through. I love "out of time" stories, and seeing the Demon Lord come to terms with an even more modern world was amazing. The struggles of immortality and how the world changes around you are handled with a grace that many shows choose to skip over. That final line at the end of the first episode Man, it hits you right there in the feels. The soundtrack fits most scenes well, and the OP was something I genuinely looked forward to every episode. The characters are fun, and whilethey follow familiar anime archetypes, they are executed in a way that makes them feel like they have been with you like an old friend The imortal hero is a diffent take on the "hero that saves the kingdom" one that belives his place is fading but still that fire burns with in him hay look if none of that sells it to you there is a point where the demon lord block a power punch and say dont woriey i have over 1 millon subscribers and its fun
Maou 2099 has a lot of potential, but lack of execution really kills a lot of this show that failed to live up to its full potential. I just love the setting. A reboot of a classic Demon Lord vs Hero. What happens if the Demon Lord actually loses and he gets defeated by the righteous hero? Well, he gets resurrected in a strange, unfamiliar sci-fi world with technology so advanced it might as well be magic. The concept of magic and technology fusing to be magitech is not an uncommon theme nowadays, but the way the sci-fi setting is handled is great. AI powered familiadevices power a lot of the logical processing that takes place when trying to create magic, and there's a real reason why Veltol, our main character is unable to use it. The device was made intentionally to exclude and become incompatible with higher level deities and entities so that people like Veltol would be at a massive disadvantage in the future, where their mana reserves and magical prowess are much less pronounced due to advances in technology. While you don't get to see a lot of the world as worldbuilding isn't exactly the focus, just the basic explanations of how the world works makes sense in the scope of the story. There's backdoors in the familia, there's "aether hacking" on magic devices, there's the ubiquitous prevalence of technology in order to apply for jobs, buy groceries, and do day-to-day activities. The setting doesn't go so in depth as to lose focus on the story, but good enough and makes a lot of sense in order to set the story up for success. And despite the sci-fi setting, it pays so much homage to the classic hero on a quest to beat the evil Demon Lord entity. Demon Lord Veltol and Gram are very classic archetypes intentionally crafted that way. Veltol is an arrogant, strong, ruler that wants to defeat humans so as to rule over the world. He uses strength to obtain territory, and while he's not stupid, he's a bit naive and narrowminded sometimes. He demands obedience as the supreme ruler of the immortals, and yet also cherishes his subordinates and truly wishes for both humanity and immortals to thrive in the whole wide world. He's the very definition of what the personality of a typical demon lord would be in a hero's journey type of story. Gram is similarly the hero archetype where he finds kindness to be the greatest virtue. He's humble, fearless, and knows his destiny is to destroy the great evil that is Veltol. Along his journey, he gathers like-minded comrades to vanquish the great evil. This basic set of personalities clash and evolve with each other as the story progresses in a very meaningful way. The motif of hero and demon lord keeps on getting revisited throughout the entire series as Veltol and Gram slowly change. When Veltol fights and gets defeated by Hero Gram, he's very much the older, wiser, and jaded veteran while Gram is the young hero with all the aspirations. Veltol scoffs at the idea of humanity, friendship, bonds as absolute power appeals to him much more. Yet, when Gram defeats Veltol, he has to accept the fact that he truly was defeated by such "unnecessary ideals." Despite his unwillingness to accept defeat, he acknowledges Gram as stronger fighter, and respects him for it. Yet he's still unconvinced with such explanations that "glimmers of life" and hope were the reasons he lost, and with those thoughts, he vanishes. Yet, when Veltol reawakens, he's in more of an infantile state. His personality and memory are intact, but he's much weaker, lacking faith, power, and subordinates. He's a ruler with no subjects and power. Veltol, in his weakened present day self, can't solve problems with violence. He requires diplomacy, relationships, and more. His perception changes as he encounters betrayals and loyalty alike. He has to adapt to the new world, change his worldview, and re-evaluate his previous self and ideals. He's forced to face the present day reality that is magitech and all the strings that come attached with such a product. Meanwhile, while Veltol does his own awakening and reimagining, Gram lived through all life had to offer for over 500 years. If Veltol is learning new things all the time, Gram is now the jaded veteran with more experience in his belt. Lacking even a reason to fight, ironically, Veltol, his sworn enemy, is the only person left in the world that genuinely respects him. And then they meet. If Gram was the hopeful hero and wanted to make changes with a bright future ahead of him and Veltol was the dispassionate ruler, the present day have the roles reversed. Now Veltol's the one with a hopeful outlook in life while Gram seems to have lost reasons to fight as the Hero. 500 years made both of them forget their grudges against each other. Instead, perhaps that 500 year bond is the only thing that's left in the 500 years time. Then, finally, Veltol bows his head to Gram. To borrow his power and to save his vassals, he's willing to ask his greatest enemy in the past to aid him in his cause. With the roles now reversed, Gram's the weary Hero that doesn't believe Veltol can achieve anything, while Veltol's the one with idealistic goals, ambitions, and innocence. While Gram berates Veltol for his statements, Veltol refutes with "I have the solutions to all the problems, not just one! For I am Demon Lord Veltol! And this World is mine to rule!" With those words, perhaps Gram sees his past self in Veltol, and maybe just to help the weak getting exploited as Hero Gram always had done, he joins hands with Veltol to save the city. If you've read this far, you can tell just how much I enjoy the Hero vs Demon being reimagined in this world and setting; it's very fun to watch like that! No edgy protagonist, protagonist with harem, convoluted sci-fi plot, or OP MC. It's a Demon Lord and Hero reuniting after 500 years in a completely different world. I won't write about all the flaws too much or else the review will go on too long, but there's a decent amount of them. The main problem is the pacing. A lot of the fights are really poorly paced with dialogue and fight scenes. There's way too much dialogue and it really makes the potentially tense fight defuse too much. The story is also pretty mediocre. There's always a lot of action and people fighting and dying, but there's never any true buildup. Usually, when there's city level fights, there's different organizations involved, personal armies, or people that Veltol recruits. In this show, it's kind of just Veltol and his crew alongside Gram fighting the like 2-3 enemies that appear. The scale of it all just doesn't really make sense, and the buildup for all of the fights are really bad. For example, a story arc about investigating artifacts to unlock a secret vault just devolves to the evil guy revealing himself and none of the previous setting, worldbuilding, or characters even matters. There's a complete lack of story when it comes to investigations, character interactions, and so on for the scale of the actual plot at hand.
Cyberpunk meets magic. I think that is the best way to describe this anime. I was pleasantly surprised with this one as I was expecting it to be a bit sloppy, cringy, and recycled, but it felt fresh unique. It was an honest and straightforward anime. I say straightforward in the case that there weren't any "side quests," so to speak. The story was very linear with things happening one at a time, and it made it easier to digest, at least in my opinion. The characters were good, the story was fun, and the visuals were very nice. This isn't a must-watch anime, but it is a good"I've got some free time, let's check out a fun mid-tier anime" anime.
TLDR: It's about a demon lord who got reincarnated into the futuristic world, where he lost most of his previous power and is trying different ways to conquer the world. Introduction Demon lord Veltol, who was recently defeated by hero Gram, has been awakened into the world where he once lived. Much has changed ever since his awakening and his subordinate Machina is there to help him. He wants to conquer the world but realizes that his power has significantly weakened ever since his awakening. Therefore, he needs to find a different way or some method to conquer the world with his subordinate Machina. Story 8/10 In thebeginning, it is an interesting setting of the anime as we get to see a demon lord who is weakened and is trying to blend into society like a normal person but is struggling to do due to his past experience as a demon lord. It is interesting because we see him trying to be a normal human while struggling to adapt to the current futuristic society that he is in. At the same time, the futuristic setting is interesting, it has a cyberpunk and psychopass type of environment blended into it. However, towards the middle point of the series, the story becomes where the demon lord is doing odd jobs to survive or build a power based on that. And towards the latter half, the story became a school life series where the demon lord is trying to become a student. So to sum it up the first half is more or less a discovery for the demon lord into the futuristic world while at the same time trying to adapt to it with a severely weakened power. Towards the later half, it became a school-based series where the demon lord is trying to learn the world from a magic academy. It is a stereotypical series while keeping it interesting by setting it in a futuristic setting. Animation 8/10 For the most part, the animation is well-drawn and it looks very similar to Korean Manhua which is quite good. However, in the action/fighting scene, the animation is not bad, but has some occasional flaws into it where some scene looks extremely slow. And yes, there is a massive CGI in the anime, but only used as background characters to keep the dynamic of the setting going. It's not bad (depending on how you view it) but it is noticeable. Characters 7/10 This is one of the few series where I praise the characters that are beautifully designed along with Bleach and Koori Zokusei Danshi to Cool na Douryou Joshi. If you have seen illustrators like Kantoku and Hitenkei it is very close to that level where their art has been brought to life. However, when it comes to the actual character within the plot it's by the book standard which serves its cliche and stereotypical moments well, but all have bad dialogue when it comes to important moments. An example is when the demon lord asks the hero for help. The demon lord asks the hero for help but doesn't have any persuasive element in his vocabulary to make the audience feel encouraged. (SPOILER FROM AOT) A good example will be Erwin's final charge against the beast Titan. He has a good dialogue with Levi to persuade their comrades to go for the final attack against the beast Titan as Erwin has mentioned they have come a long way and along the way, they have many fallen comrade and their sacrifices are not in vain because they reach that point because of them. However, when it comes to the demon lord and hero the dialogue doesn't feel or lead to any persuasive element it feels more like what the fuck are you guys on about. But hey at least we don't have some sort of garbage like demon lord Anos Voldigoad who is so powerful and doesn't do anything with those powers. Conclusion This is a pretty good series however for some that is not interested in slice-of-life. This may not be for you, but the setting of a demon lord who is reincarnated into the future that is significantly weakened and is trying different ways to regain his prime is an interesting way to go from nothing to something. Animation looks quite similar to Korean Manhua and is quite good in general and the characters is very cliche and by the book standard however do suffer some occasional bad di
well, it's kinda complicated. this anime have too many genres mixed in up, they got sci-fi, magic, fantasy/reverse-isekai(?) in one anime, so i am not too sure on the world building here. if you love action anime with a good animation, like jujutsu kaisen or chainsawman, this is not for you. the animation is not that good, there is some awkward animation in here and there. comedy?, you can expect some from this one here. there is some misundertanding type of comedy here, like in shadow garden dan overlord, and yeah the Voice actor for the MC here does Ainz from overlord too, so there is someresemblance on it. SO, if you are looking through some new mixed genre experience get this a try.
A very interesting story very well-told, for the most part. I liked how concise it was but I also see the benefit they could have from a longer season like other reviewers have wanted. For example, sometimes characters explain their attacks/power/mana in a way that halts combat scenes, which I don't hate in theory, but it comes across as very inorganic here. I think being able to control the pacing across more episodes would have helped this. Still very enjoyable and I hope it has more seasons! There are many moments that feel like cliche but the English VAs deliver them in ways that keep themfunny or effectively teach you more about the characters. I've never watched an anime with up-to-date use of slang and modern media culture, and Maou 2099 incorporates it in a way that doesn't derail or take over the story. The ways in which this demon lord has to adapt to a new world that is so technologically advanced and fairly similar to modern dominant cultures actually comes across as very realistic. I hope to see more of this story in the future to learn about how more of the world works. The main character, specifically, breaks from many potential faults his writing could have had. While he is exceedingly powerful in certain ways, he is not perfect and we can clearly see places in which he falls short, which help place him among the supporting characters. As a viewer, you understand why he is among them and how he cannot fix every problem he has on his own. I also appreciate that there are occasional themes of nudity but they overall are not excessively voyeuristic or meant to demean women in these scenes.
Reverse futuristic "isekai" with a "Demon Lord" trying to rise-up in a cyberpunk/magic fused world. Content Warning: does contain some intense themes like brutal genocide (briefly, but major point for a while) and mind alteration (briefly) Art 8/10 Animation 7/10 Openings/Endings 7/10 (but for being fitting, 9/10) Plot 9/10 Good Characters 10/10 Bad Characters 6/10Content: to me, it felt very dry, but very enjoyable. The Demon Lord is very likeable and very straightforward. The other main character (as listed on MAL) is somewhat relatable. There are nice side characters too that are very much lovable. Style: again, felt fairly dry, but had kinda dark cyberpunk feel to art. Animation was mostly good/fine, some people were disappointed in some likely cool fights not being shown at all. Personal enjoyment: again, felt dry, but wholesome and enjoyable. I hated the holocaust curvaball and some other things to lesser degree, but very enjoyable and positive. Such a vibe. I would recommend this to people who like isekai's, reverse isekais, reincarnations, cyberpunk The mains are adults (well more than that) and two of our favorite sides are high schoolers so can't say this is adult cast though because of the mains, felt very mature. This is very different from devil is a part-timer though multiple things give feeling like are watching that. I hope this was helpful in some way <3
