On the dusty streets of the castle town Dayah in the Fortna Kingdom, a young orphan named Nina steals for survival. Experiencing one tragedy after another, she has little to hope for in her life. Believing it best for Nina, her closest friend, Saji, hands her over to Second Prince Azure Seth Fortna, who has been searching for someone with unique and intense deep-blue eyes—just like Nina's. The kingdom's princess, the revered Astral Priestess Alisha, has recently died on her way to the Galgada Kingdom, where she was to marry the tyrant First Prince Sett. However, her death is concealed for political reasons, and that is where Nina needs to step in. With nowhere else to go and no one to turn to, Nina assumes Alisha's identity and future duties. But with each moment spent with Azure, Nina feels herself drawn to his warmth, fearing that once she is wed to another, nobody will remain to remember her true self. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Peak Josei was on the menu this season in the form of Hoshinina. For the last year or so, I have desperately awaited something to fill the hole in my heart that Niehime left and while it’s not told the complete story, Hoshinina is certainly on its way to doing that. Brilliant story with a resourceful and independent female lead, romance, drama and political shenanigans, I couldn’t ask for more. I’m a big sucker for characters being thrust into roles, gradually growing into them and then dominating. Nina is not a royal by birth, but ends up in the royal family and gets all this pressureto prevent war placed on her shoulders. It’s an unfair burden, but one she embraces and strives to excel in rather than complain. I think your enjoyment of this series really comes down to how much you like Nina and how much you care about the male leads. Nina was such a dope character to me, enjoyed seeing her overcome obstacles and how resourceful she was in the 2nd half in an unfamiliar setting. She really grew into her role as time went on, embracing the newfound responsibility she had to her people. It felt so similar to Sariphi from Niehime to me and even the aesthetic of the world has a lot of similarities. If you enjoyed that story, you’ll really like this too. The political drama in this show was pretty cool too. I liked all the behind the scenes adoption/replacement stuff, the political marriages and jockeying for power even within the royal family. It’s a lot, and you feel bad for characters like Sett, Azure and Nina who are all kind of victims in this political posturing. The second half of the season in particular, really ups the stakes and makes you fear for an all out war breaking out. Wouldn’t be a fantasy shojosei without romance and it’s very much a big and enjoyable thing in Hoshina. I like that it’s not Nina’s whole motivation or personality, she is very much her own character trying to accomplish her goals. The romance just acts as a vehicle through which the plot advances. That’s to say, Nina developing romantic feelings for Sett and Azure establishes her connection to Galgada and Fortuna, making her want to protect those places and create an ideal scenario that averts war. When you have people you care about in a place, you tend to want it to stay safe for your loved ones. And, let’s face it, the love triangle is fun. Both male leads are bad ass, intelligent and generally cool characters. I did dislike Sett initially because he came off as an edgelord, but he grew on me considerably as the last few episodes played out and I learned more about his motivations. He still did a few things I can’t forgive YET, but I can see myself coming to like him. Azure as the first boy introduced has the usual anime advantage in that respect, but it looks like the author knows how to satisfy fans of both. I expect a good amount of teasing and fanservice for both going forward. Production values is where Hoshinina struggles. Awesome female mc, interesting story, characters, world, character designs are good.. but the animation doesn’t hold up. At times it looks really bad, distractingly bad and the art at times produces off model characters. It’s a shame because the characters look good when they’re sitting around or talking, but when there’s any sort of action it takes a dip. Still, I enjoyed the rest of the story enough to make up for this. Hoshinina is an easy recommendation for fans of fantasy romance anime, those who like strong and well written female leads, or those who just like hot guys fighting over a girl. If not for the production values, I think this would’ve been way more popular and it deserved it. I’ll miss it. Hoshinina gets 9 out of 10.
Please watch this anime! If you love court romances, drama, intrigue, magical realism, and spirited characters, this is a must-watch. It’s one of the best romance anime I’ve seen in a long time—I’ve been so tired of the same run-of-the-mill shounen romances that oversexualize female characters. Because it’s a josei, it feels so much richer and more compelling. The characters are well-developed, the setting and story are unique, and the relationships are genuinely engaging. It’s emotional, well-paced, and full of depth. Nina is such a resilient and lovable protagonist—you can’t help but root for her. I found myself growing attached to the characters, changing my opinions onsituations and characters as the story unfolded, and getting completely absorbed in their dynamics. The story is touching, morally grey at times ( which I love), and it really warms your heart. I binged the manga after finishing the anime because I needed more. Now, I desperately want a Season 2! I promise you’ll love it. Please give it a chance!
Nina the Starry Bride sounds like a girly anime. But watching it, it has an appeal to everyone who enjoys romance. § Overview Nina is just a poor girl. Even if she wants to, she is unable to save a friend from dying. Little did she know that her fate is about to change and her actions would affect nations. Prince Azure of Fortna takes her to be a 'substitute princess' for the real Princess Alisha who is actually dead. She is tasked to marry Prince Sett of Galgada. But before she goes to Galgada, both Nina and Azure fall in love. How can this love prosper when Ninahad to choose her duty in order to protect Azure? § Notes 1. The art style is fairly good. Those who have seen the manga first have much to complain. Perhaps it's just the case that the anime, while still good, doesn't compare to the manga. But if that's the case, anime-only watchers will still be amazed with the art style, and there's more to look forward to in the manga. 2. The pacing is just fine, but again, manga readers have much to complain. The anime is said to be moving faster than the manga would have presented it. I haven't read the manga so I don't see it yet as something to complain about. 3. Sakamoto Maaya graces the OP, which is a bit catchy, while the ED by Tōyama Nao feels sad. 4. Nina is a quirky character. It never fails to add some light-hearted moments. Despite that, it's full of drama. It's great at creating tension and anticipation. 5. The two male rivals for Nina's affection, Azure and Sett, both have tragic backgrounds and are equally compelling. I like that both are not wimps and quite capable as a ruler as well as a fighter. If you're Nina, Azure might be your first love, but you would be unable to decided who to choose just by listing their virtues. 6. I'm still uncertain on what really makes josei different to shoujo. Just going by the characters' ages, I would have thought this is shoujo and not josei. Nevertheless, it has a level of maturity that is not apparent if you only look at Nina's quirkiness or their ages. If this is how many josei anime goes, it gives me enough reasons to watch or read josei. 7. If there's any criticism I see, we're not given much on the lore of the real Princess Alisha so far. There seems to be so much background lore in the story that was not sufficiently presented but you feel is there. § Conclusion This is an emotional story punctuated by Nina's silliness. Don't let the josei tag make you think that it's too girly. It's a good drama but could be better.
When I first watched this anime, I was rooting for Az at the beginning, but as soon Seth came into the picture, I did a complete 180. But now that it's over I'm still rooting for Seth. Like yeah sure at first he made her life hard but over time when we get to understand Seth's backstory it's understandable to be that cold but as soon Nina came into his life Seth started to warm up a bit by bit which was so cute to see honestly. Other than that, this anime has a very good story with some lovely characters and all. And the artstyle forthis anime perfectly fits these characters along with the animation. 100% Recommended to watch
Love triangle stories! Some hate them and should stay away from this one. Even if you like or just don't mind them, you're not ready for a love triangle this messy. From rags to riches overnight, Nina's heart wishes for just one person she can be special to. Then, not one, but two princes fall in love with her. Princes from enemy countries. At constant risk of war. Surely, nothing could go wrong. The princes start off as brutes, one of them is sharply more cruel than the other, but maybe the female lead's kindness can fix them both? She is adorable, feisty, with a positiveattitude, though also naive and immature. Oh, there are cute animals to bring more fun to the show. Animation is okay. Music is good. The pacing is very quick. With only 12 episodes to cram so much of the source material it has to be. This is adapted from a medieval fantasy josei manga with political intrigue, very entangled romance and just a hint of supernatural elements. If you've become interested so far, you can also expect mind-blowing plot twists and cliffhangers at the end of every episode that will leave you on the edge of your seat. Good for binging now that the season is over. If you like a good, gripping soap opera, this is as entertaining as one. Needs a second season, though, but we know josei rarely gets the treatment it deserves, so you'll have to pick up the manga if your investement in the story calls for it.
I Highly recommend watching this anime! It was truly a masterpiece! My only complaint is that there isn’t more. Only season one is out and it ends at a bit of a cliffhanger. I was truly at the edge of my seat the entire time watching and I couldn’t get enough of it. I watched the English dub and the voice actors made it even more amazing due to how perfect they were. The animation was beautiful and the male main characters especially are what captivated me because they are both so gorgeous! I am praying for a second season so please watch and givethis anime and manga all your attention
The synopsis of Nina the Starry bride really piqued my interest. I love jousei anime with strong female leads, a diversity of characters, politcal upheavels, the cunningness, the love, the romance, the drama, the power dynamics - everything that the historical fantasy setting has to offer. But after completing the 1st season, something still felt a little...fumbled, in my opinion. (I'm gonna try to keep this as spoiler free as possible) I'll start with what I liked: The story & setting - 10/10 couldn't really get any better. It doesn't shy away from showing things the people in power do with a shrug. Fortna's King has tobe a prime example of that. The setting really captures the prime of its time ruled by monarchs and the confusing cunning strategies they come up with to keep their power and domination. The pacing of the anime, at first I felt was really going a tad too fast, but now, I think it's fine. It cuts to the chase as really so much is happening in the 2nd part. The characters - But a lot of the setting and story is character dependent, as far as my understanding. They move the story. You have beautiful beautiful Azure, and gorgeous gorgeous Sett as the two 'princes' opposite each other. Both very much the love interest for our beautiful, child-like, tomboyish "priestess princess" Nina - I mean Alisha. Yes, Sett comes into the story a lot later, but I just cannot with these two male characters okay? They are gorgeous and I honestly stayed more to admire them than actually watch the anime (I'm digressing but we're gonna circle back to this point) The supporting characters move the plot forward by a lot. They truly are 'supporting characters' doing their job right. I think it's the second part of the anime where they truly shine - Anne & Hikami, and the King of Galgada. The animation - It's actually very pretty. Apart from the charming main character design, the clothes they wear are beautifully elaborate and filled with details, but keeping it simple. Apart from the names of our characters, its the clothes that really give "Asian-inspired fictional setting." It also reminded me a lot of "7th Time Loop" anime animation because of the similarity but of course, "Nina the Starry Bride" is not produced by the same studio as that. However, I think I really love this kind of animation - the characters just look so beautiful it's a treat to my eyes. ESPECIALLY Sett and Azure - like my god did the animators go all out in creating these stunning two men! (see? we circled back to the point) Now, I like myself some nice, overall, great animation - who doesn't really? It's all the audience want. But, to be headover heels for the animation of certain characters? That's different. And they have me with these two. Honest. The cast - 11/10 bless the casting team that chooses Umehara and Uchiyama as the main male voice actors - music to my ears~ 11/10 no notes. The OST/music - OP & ED of the anime are pretty and relevant. They have a charming vibe that fits the story over all. But to me, it's the OST that truly shines in this anime. Composed by Natsumi Tabuchi, the soundtrack is just beautiful! I've listened to the album twice while completeing the series (took me 2 days) - and I honestly don't have words to express how lovely the soundtrack is! Anyone reading my review, please give it a listen if you haven't! And that's all the good points I had about Nina the Starry Bride. And now the fumbling parts... Our main female protaginist Nina, is probably my main point of fumbling. As someone who is a stand-in for an actual princess, her character shows that lack of upbringing a princess should be having (you know, because class distinction and all). Nina's real identity is that she's an orphan who is to play the Princess and of course, as the story progresses, she falls in love with (I'm gonna say both) the prince(s) - with difference in affinity of course. She feigns grace and tries her best to make-believe the role she is filling in. Where she continuously fails though is to grow - while being straightforward in her approach on everything and being 'different' than the norm, she never learns to actually use the very real position of power given to her as 'the priestess who holds Fate' - everytime there is monologoues of how she's gonna do it, she'll change fate and protect the people she love, and I'm left constantly waiting for her to take that action - unless praying a 100 times for things to go her way counts as 'actions'. She is also gullible - which is fair because given her real background, she'd be - and she remains that way throughout believing everything that people say to her - because she trusts eveyone. Again, fair to her character as she has no allies in a monarchial world, so of course she throws herself head first with acts of kindness. But when does the action part happen? Throughout the anime, she's the damsel that needs saving all the time, regardless of whether she's the one taking the first step to change things. She is powerless in her position when things go out of her comprehensive control and when it does, she is in anxiety mode spiralling out of control (absolutely relatable behaviour). So what gives really? That's what I'm left with. The way I see it, she is a tragedy princess (so far) and the ending of this anime (should it get a S2/S3) won't be a happy one. No matter what she tries to do, as a woman who's path is literally to be a trophy wife - a key pawn for political reasosn, her tries are futile - whether she be Alisha or Nina - she is always shown that there's only so much she can do until she's shut down. At the end of it all, her importance lies in being a beautiful pawn. The only interpersonal relationships she has formed that go beyond this are with Azure, Sett (but it unclear what his intentions are completely), Anne and Hikami. So what is my conclusion really? I think S1 ended abrubptly and I really hope there is a season 2. What kept me watching was the casting and the characterizations. What left me puzzled was Nina herself. There is plot and it's going somehwere but a 12 episode season felt more like a trailer than a complete seasonal arc. The end credit left me on an aticipating note though, so while overall my score is a 6/10, i think that it has room to score higher.
This was simultaneously frustrating and entertaining. I found the premise interesting and the art style of the show appealing. I liked the idea of the setting being where romance was going to happen but that was influenced later. The side characters are, to be honest, better than the main cast and more interesting. There was very little plot in the second half of the show with a lot of actions having no point. This is a romance but I personally don't like either of the male leads, one she only met recently and he was nasty to her at first which left a bad taste whenthere was an abrupt shift to them 'liking' each other. The second male lead is an abusive and entitled person from the start with the romance between them being incredibly frustrating. Furthermore, the ending was annoying, there was no real conclusion and no one to route for, the supposed climax lacked any tension. This would have been a 5 if not for the side characters who were the stars for me. Though I can see the appeal of this it's reminiscent of trashy romances that I love to hate to watch.
Words cannot describe how much I enjoyed watching Nina and the Starry Bride. Out of all the anime that was premiering this season this was probably the one I looked forward to the most and god damn did it deliver. Every single episode tried to top it self and it delivered. The cliff hangers it would leave us on, especially when Nina first met Prince Sett. All of that added up to such an incredible watch. Speaking of Prince Sett, he was a character that I really couldn't stand at first. I get that's what the writers were probably going for as he's portrayed bea really powerful prince that doesn't take shit from nobody. At first I didn't like him and he was someone I was hoping Nina wasn't going to spend too much time with especially because he tried to Undertale Genocide her... but he's someone that I really came to like as the episodes had gone by. Whilst I wouldn't say he was my favorite character, I do think he was one of the most well developed characters. The way Sett slowly opened his heart towards Nina was really well done. It is difficult to gain someone's trust, especially when they're so closed off. I'm very closed off for the most part so I do understand what it's like. I've had a lot of negative experiences in my life that I have tried not to let shape me into someone else, but that's not the case for everyone. Setts bitterness and cold shoulder isn't an easy one to over look, especially if you don't see that perspective, but if you can understand it, then I feel like Sett might not be as bad of a character as one may think. Also the after credits scene on the season 1 finale was so good lmao So many twists and turns in this anime has made this become one of my new favorite animes of all time. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute watching this show and I pray it gets a season 2. I want to know what happens to Nina, I want to know Setts opinion on what transpired, I want to know what happened to Azure after he left. Nina and the Starry Bride is one of those shows in which I can see why you may not like it as sometimes it does feel slightly confusing. I had to watch scenes more than once occasionally to fully grasp it although that may just be me being incredibly stupid. Either way TLDR: Great anime, season 2 please and thank you 10/10
⚠️ Warning: This anime is a masterclass in how to ruin romance. If you want a satisfying love story, stay far away. The good? The art looks great, and the animation flows well. The bad? Everything else. Let’s dissect this disaster: Nina – Sweet orphan girl, sold off to play dress-up as the dead Priestess. She’s kind, hard-working, and pretty… but also hopelessly indecisive and so naive it hurts. Her biggest “trait”? Forgiving literally anyone who abuses her. It doesn’t matter if she’s hurt physically or mentally—she’ll smile and forgive. At some point, it stops being kindness and starts looking like Stockholm syndrome. She complicates her own life endlessly, and the “love triangle” wouldn’t even exist if she had an ounce of self-respect. Azure – The one redeeming factor in this dumpster fire. Strong, smart, compassionate, and actually in love with Nina for her courage and innocence. He fights for her, he protects her, he’s consistent—and yet Nina acts like choosing him would somehow be “too easy.” Honestly, the only prince worth anything here. Sett – And now for the joke of the century. This so-called “romantic rival” is a straight-up psychopath. He abuses Nina physically and mentally, then suddenly decides her childish personality is “attractive.” Voilà, instant yandere. The anime tries to justify his cruelty with tragic backstory flashbacks, but sorry, hurting an innocent girl isn’t deep; it’s just pathetic. Sett isn’t a “complex character”; he’s a walking red flag factory. The fact that Nina even entertains the thought of him proves this “romance” is built on pure nonsense. The romance: It’s not a love triangle—it’s a crime scene. Nina’s indecision isn’t romantic tension; it’s character assassination. She flips between Azure, the genuinely good man, and Sett, the deranged psycho, like she’s allergic to happiness. Watching her forgive Sett over and over is exhausting and insulting. Final judgment: Art/Animation: 8/10 (the only reason your eyes won’t bleed). Characters: 4/10 (Azure carries the whole cast on his back). Plot: 3/10 (holes everywhere, shallow politics, and all tied together with Nina’s Stockholm-syndrome “romance”). This anime isn’t a romance—it’s a circus act where Nina suffers, Azure suffers, and Sett gets screen time he doesn’t deserve. If Season 2 doesn’t nuke Sett from orbit and let Nina finally grow a brain, don’t even bother.
In brief The animation is well drawn 8/10 Not as beautiful as Apothecary Diaries, but much better than most anime. Love the look of it. The music is excellent 10/10 From the Open to the end, nice music that fits the story. The characters are well developed and follow believable paths 10/10 The characters follow a believable path, no super characters destroying armies on their own.Story kept me interested, looking for my weekly fix 10/10 If you are interested in love triangles set in a fictional eastern medieval setting that includes action and adventure, this should be a fun watch for you.
