First off, this is my first review and I'm only making this because I feel the score for this show is way too low. This is a stupid anime. No, I mean it. It is one of the dumbest nonsensical things I have ever watched but that's what made it so damn funny! It was just nonsense and one liners everywhere. Half of the plot, (if you could call it that), was so stupid and random that I couldn't help laugh at just how bizarre it was. But that's the point. They're 3 min episodes and the people who made it knew exactly what they wantedit to be, nonsensical humor with a thin shred of plot. If your looking for something Nichijou esq this might be up your alley.
Since this is a short anime I'll keep this short. Somera-chan is a magical girl anime that's not about magical girls. In fact, most of the time it's just a potpourri of random comedy. It's 2 minutes per episode and its funny as hell. Give it a shot. You might just like this off the wall unique adventure. Also Somera is like the worst magical girl in magical girl history. And I love this for subverting all of my expectations. Sure it may not be the prettiest anime, but it sure made me laugh more than anything else this season (discounting pity laughs). 7/10
Story: The events of each episode are, for the most part, separate from the entire series as a whole. This works well, and each episode has its own jokes that are set up well enough to warrant a chuckle. I never burst out laughing, but I was definitely finding a lot of the comedy quite humorous. Art: Pretty good animation, although some of the proportions, during scenes that should have been fairly well proportioned, were off a little. No real complaints in this department, however. Sound: Again, same as before, pretty basic stuff. Nothing out of the ordinary for a work that isn't trying to be anything special. The creatorsbehind this knew exactly what they were doing and how far they wanted it to go. They're definitely comfortable with an average production. Character: No real character to comment on, but the general self-awareness of the characters within Fushigi na Somera-chan were pretty funny and enjoyable all around. Beyond that, there's not a lot to define each character from itself. This isn't a bad thing, but it could have been neat to see tropes used in a fun, comedic way. Enjoyment: Much more enjoyable than some of the other 3-minute anime's I've watched. This was pretty funny, although not the funniest thing I've seen within this medium. However, I could see myself recommending this work in particular to fans who want a quick laugh and don't have time to commit to 30 minute episodes. ((If you liked this review, friend me for new reviews on other works, both manga and anime!))
The more I think about it, the more I like it! Somera-chan is weird. Like, really weird. That's the appeal. It's cute, funny, weird comedy for cute, funny, weird people. It's short and sweet, easy to digest, and a good time overall. It's worth the watch and takes no effort to enjoy. Turn your brain off and have fun ♥ If you like cute but cringe comedy, this is a can't miss and you won't be disappointed. Expect the unexpected with this crazy journey as you become a part of Somera-chan's wacky world. She'll keep you laughing the whole way through.
Fushigi na Somera-chan is short, fast-paced, and very strange, which in its own way counts in its favor. Despite its unorthodox format, or perhaps because of it, this anime manages to get quite a few laughs, both at the well-timed absurd comedy, and at the jabs it takes at various other genres as well. Beginning with the story, it'd be a stretch to say this anime has one, even if by merits of its comedy this is the anime's strongest aspect. It follows a magical girl, her sister, her friend, and a girl they hired in the second episode, and follows their misadventures. These situationsare more than just random humor, even if it has the essence of that style, which is refreshing to see for an incredibly short comedy title like this one, which can be completed in under 35 minutes. Typically, when an anime is this short, it just ends up being nonsense, but here it actually sticks the landing with its scenarios and dialogue. Be it aliens which try to repay property damage with insect dung, or a "GMO" version of one of them that terrorizes a village in the forest, or even the semi live-action credits sequences that sing a little traditional tune while drawing a picture, it all manages to be pretty consistently funny. The art is quite strong, exceeding any expectations this genre has for its titles, complete with a fun and dynamic art style that lends itself well to physical comedy, and an animation quality that matches the energy of the anime as a whole. The sound is also good, meeting all basic standards of quality, with a good OP and strong, fast-paced voicework that doesn't trip over itself, despite how fast it goes. The characters are perfect fits for this type of anime, and stand out as real drivers of the comedy at hand, their interplay elevating the absurd atmosphere throughout the show. Of them, Shizuku and Somera are my favorites. On the one hand, Shizuku has some of the best comedic timing in the whole anime, mischievous, deadpan, and wry the whole time, she is a major source of this show's comedic value. On the other hand, Somera, being the protagonist of the anime, proves to be a source of such chaos that without her this anime wouldn't have the proper steam to keep it going. Be it turning a dog into a bizarre food-themed beast, or releasing a "GMO" version of her friend into the wilderness where it attacks innocent bystanders, she is the nexus for much of this show's random conflicts. Overall, Fushigi na Somera-chan is a fun, fleeting little title filled to the brim with energy and enthusiasm, and I'd recommend it on the grounds that it is indeed quite funny, and at under 40 minutes, even if you don't like it you'd have hardly wasted any time at all.
