Ryou Sakaguchi is a totally normal high school student, aside from his single unusual hobby. Sakaguchi is a fudanshi—a man who loves reading "boys' love" manga, and fantasizing about the gay potential he sees everywhere. He has only one wish before he dies: to find himself some friends that understand his secret passion. His wish comes true, as Sakaguchi begins to uncover a host of interested parties. There's Rumi Nishihara, a closeted fujoshi who is more than eager to discuss the joys of boys' love with Sakaguchi; the flamboyantly gay leader of the school's cooking club, Yuujirou Shiratori, who makes no effort whatsoever to conceal his sexuality; Akira Ueda, Shiratori's diligent admirer, who will do anything for the love of his life; and even the mischievous Daigo, a fellow fudanshi and popular author of boys' love doujinshi. Standing by their sides throughout all the otaku chaos is Sakaguchi's best friend, Toshiaki Nakamura, who only wishes his classmates would start acting more like normal people. Okay, The fact that I am a gay shouldn't have any impact on my views here, however a lot of these reviews seem to think that such an inconsequential personal detail is the lynch pin on which the entire world should turn. Fudanshi Koukou Seikatsu is a charming, inoffensive and hilarious series, something that is evidently lost on the joyless, humourless losers who seem to think they're being oppressed by cartoon characters. Fragile little faeries with hair trigger emotions and a victimhood fetish this is evidently not for you. But anybody with a sense of humour and skin thicker than a wispy fart will be utterly captivatedby these characters and their fabulous interplay, 3 minutes per episode isn't enough time to tell a complicated story, but it is enough time to make a human connection and its more than enough time to make you fall in love. Highly recommend... unless you're a humourless weakling.
To start off, as someone who is bisexual I can see why many in the LGBT community would be upset by the themes of this anime. But I personally don't think any harm was meant by any of it and it is clearly intended as a comedy, not serious at all, or intended to be homophobic, that should be taken with a pinch of salt. The word 'Fujoshi' itself is a word for rotten, so there isn't any need for people to further go on about how disgusting fujoshi are because that's the intention of the word itself. While the fetishisation of gay people isa problem, if people are reasonable and it is limited to anime, manga, yaoi, etc, it really shouldn't be something people are massively offended by because...It's not real. Please do not confuse fujoshi with the kinds of people who fetishise real life gay couples. Each to their own I say, and I personally thoroughly enjoyed this anime and would highly recommend it if you are looking for a lighthearted humerous anime with BL and fujoshi themes. I am also a fan of other BL and yaoi animes but I wouldn't class myself as a serious fujoshi because of this, I actually agreed with Sakaguchi, that it's more about the love and romance between the couples seen in these things that I really love and get a cute happy feeling from! Overall cute fun anime, I enjoyed watching Sakaguchi interact with his friends, make more friends and loved the end theme so much! :) xoxo
I personally loved this anime. I immediately went and read all the comic strips after watching the first episode too. I see a number of people criticising the work for being homophobic or offensive or other such garbage which I really don't understand. I think these people have misunderstood the premise or context of the anime and expected something different from it. This anime is (as the name suggests) about the daily life of a fudanshi high schooler - and as a fudanshi, my friends and I all found it hilariously relatable. They managed to capture it so well given that the episodes were only 3-4minutes long. Also, just in terms of representation, this is the second anime I've ever seen with a fudanshi character (the other being Genshiken Nidaime, which I recommend if you want a more serious look at a fudanshi character), and it honestly felt really nice to have a character I could relate to that much. I would recommend this anime to any fujoshi or fudanshi, as well as anyone who is even a little interested in yaoi. I do kind of feel however that if you don't already have some experience with the genre, some of the things they say or do may go over your head.
Short series are often a breath of fresh air of sorts for content that would not work in longer format and Fudanshi Koukou Seikatsu is testament to that. With a unique (sort of) premise and good art it sets itself apart from the crowd but does this mean it works and is worth your time? The setup here is simple, Ryou is a fudanshi, someone who loves reading BL but isn’t actually gay or bisexual. He spends his time reading / watching BL, fantasizing about shipping situations between his non-BL liking friends and just generally hanging about with his friends. This sounds interesting on paper and initiallyit is. It’s funny seeing the reaction of people around him to this. Some accept it, others bewildered by it. Along the way he befriends a girl Rumi who also like BL and they begin to bond. Seeing him muster up the courage to go to a store and buy a BL book or buy a new doujinshi at a Comic market is amusing and very relatable even if you don’t read BL as we have all been embarrassed by buying things not strictly aimed at us or where people may judge us. I do have a problem with Ryou though and it is a big one: he constantly talks about BL even in the vicinity of his friends. It’s basically all he talks about. He has a passion and that is fine and I have no issues with perverted main characters but the way he relates even minor things to BL, shipping or the like becomes irritating fast. We all have passions but we do not bleat on about them at every given moment, even as students we knew when to draw the line. Ryou does not and despite being harmless he comes across as a pain because the writing makes him play up to this at every chance. His friends are nice enough though, they do actually talk about different things and are very accepting of Ryous hobby, more so than most would be at that age from my experience at least. Daigo being his closest friend, whilst showing some moments of unease, is fine with Ryou, an actual gay friend Akira adds a bit of spice to proceedings and Rumi adds an actual fujoshis view point which is welcome and she at least does not harp on about BL all the time. My biggest complaint with this series aside from Ryou himself is the repetition. Sure most comedies have repetition but here it begins to grate on you. The same jokes played over and over do become tiresome and quickly at that which for a short series is a very bad sign. There may be the odd variant on this but it all comes full circle and by episode 6 or 7 I just stopped smiling and continued trudging through. When they do add something new such as his new friend Rumi it works well and adds much needed freshness. Be it her taking him to Comic market for the first time and them experiencing the perils of that, going to the bookstore together or discussing who they ship in a series it is nice. This was needed more but sadly did not come to pass enough. The animation is basic, nothing stands out but it is by no means bad and the art is good with the typical BL style used for the designs. The ED for the series, SEKAI wa Boy Meets Boy, is a particular highlight sang by Ryous seiyuu Wataru Hatano and my god is it catchy. I practically sang along each episode. Maybe if you’re really into BL then you may find more enjoyment here than I did, I read a fair bit of BL and Yaoi but I still found it dying with overuse of the same tired jokes and a real lack of anything fresh. I would say avoid this but with a total run time of around 36 minutes I wouldn’t blame you for being interested. When a comedy can no longer make you muster a smile never mind a laugh then it has failed its purpose as it the case here for me unfortunately.
It's stupid. It's dumb. It's short. It's simplistic. It's what you'd expect in 3 minutes. But it's a dumb entertaining. Like something so dumb, you like it. Sometimes you can't fathom it, but that's the point. It's not suppose to make sense. The fudanshi character isn't explainable in simple terms. It's convoluted. And this show portrays that. Art is basic, sound isn't that great, characters are funny, enjoyment is ehh, but overall, if you got spare time (40min), and you're freaking bored, this is an easy way to spend it. Honestly in my own opinion, I felt like this anime was purely comedy based, anything else, and it doesn't make sense. Like it can't be shoujo, it can't be shounen, it's honestly just weirdness bundled up into 3 minute episodes. This is no plot, that's the point, randomness. Overall I rate this 7/10 because it's entertainment material is something to rid your boredom. If you're looking for a meaningful anime, this anime is not for you. If you're looking for a quality anime, this anime is not for you. This anime is to rid boredom, entertain, not make you think about society in a deep meaningful way. Honestly this show and Plastic Nee-san, they're practically like the same type of anime. Entertainment based. Not meant to spark those well known anime jitters you get when you watch good anime like Tokyo Ghoul, Parasyte, Eureka 7, hell it's not even remotely close to FLCL. Like I said, good for entertainment, not enjoyment.
Seeing how there are quite a few people who seem to have been negatively affected by this anime, I'd like to give my own short review on what to expect from this anime, and who it is/isn't for. Fudanshi Koukou is not a boys love anime. If you are a gay man / someone else looking for an anime with gay representation, this is not the anime for you. The main character of this anime is a (supposedly) straight high school student who finds enjoyment in seeing two guys together, making this a series more appealing to fujoshi rather than anyone else. The episodes are very short, andtherefore not a whole lot of character development can be expected. It's more of a series of short stories about Sakaguchi's high school days, and his 'trouble' of finding like-minded people and, obviously, buying BL manga. The art overall feels nice to look at, and the sound is okay. As it is a comedy anime (which a lot of people should probably have taken as a hint not to expect actual representation), its purpose is to make you smile, which I think works very well if you're not stuck up or, again, someone looking for an actual BL anime.
As a straight man i watch this show out of the curiosity. Not alot time when you see a anime about straight guy that like yaoi. Then after the first ep i could help to laugh and laugh some more. I was enjoying myself watching misadventures of this guy. A straight guy could like yaoi. The music is real good. As i watch more ep the more i like it. I can't get ehough of it, It was like some type of drug. Watching this straight guy enjoying yaoi with his friends. As i set their laughing as the yaoi jokes too. I can relateto that one friend, Since never understand yaoi thing. This is a real great story. The art is to die for. 10/10
I give this a 7 but to be completely honest it deserves something closer to 9 As a straight male who is definitely, most certainly homophobic i couldnt bear to put this above 8. BUT as comedic value this was a 10/10 It was also redeemed by its characters and especially the main who cringes away from gay contact to himself I also dropped the score a little because each episode was too short. I mean it felt like watching 1 episode ova of an anime rather than a series. Now let's get into the rest The story was about a guy who ejoys bl. He dosent like it done to him but he likes watching it. This results in some pretty funny sitriations. 9 The art it was pretty good for such a short anime. lots of creators just leave it bcause its not worth the effort to make really good art for something like this 8 the sound was good, hard to explain. Just watch it 9 characters were the best part id have to say. 10 enjoyment 10 overall 7 (for reasons i explained above)
To start off, I am a huge fan of Michinoku Atami's manga's. Her stories are notoriously well drawn and sexy as hell. I never read Fudanshi Koukou Seikatsu so i was super stoked to dig into another one of her stories. But damn this one was a curve ball! Not only was it poorly animated and shallowly portrayed, but it wasn't sexy at all! I know it isn't her fault. Maybe the manga isn't steamy like the rest of her works, or maybe the animation studios took out the good bits. Regardless, I need to read the manga, now! Anyway, this show is a funlittle hoot. I recommend it for a light watch.
To be honest, I think we could have written a better story for this anime - something shoujo rom com with the same feels as lovely complex or melancholy of haruhi suzumiya or toradora. The characters were interesting enough to create great back stories and a primary plot. I guess the creators didn't think about it much but men, this has good potentials. Not that they have to turn this anime into totally BL but Nakahara and Gucci really have a good chemistry. The music was so-so and I laughed a lot when watching to the point that people at home would tell me off.Over all it's a so-so anime.
This is a short and silly comedy which revolves around BL/Yaoi theme. It lasts 36 minutes (3 mins per episode), so a plot and character development aren't expected. Despite being short, the show has somewhat diverse characters - protagonist who secretly read BL, protagonist's friend who dislikes BL, a popular guy who crossdresses, guys who adore the popular guy and do chores for him, a BL author, and a fujoshi. The jokes are based on hiding that characters like BL or they relate everything they see as BL, which is mostly silly and can make you laugh if you are familiar with the theme (moreif you are into BL). I guess the joke is about the original meaning of the word which describes fans of such themes - "rotten", the characters know their interest is found disgusting by many and some jokes are situations where public notices someone being into BL. If you dislike BL/Yaoi theme, better skip this show if you don't want to be bored. The show is short silly fun which should be taken lightheartedly. I give this show 7.5 our of 10.
I have not many things to say about this anime because I quite enjoyed it Story : It's a very original one, fudanshis are not very common in anime so it was refreshing. The situations about being a BL-fan were pretty relatable (at least to me) and they even referenced a pretty popular BL seiyuu Art : Nothing too pretty, I could even say it's kind of ugly but I can guess the budget was very low so it's excusable for an anime that small Sound : They hired a BL seiyuu for the main voice and he's very talented, the fujoshi's seiyuu did also a very good job. Overall thevoice acting is pretty solid. I should also mention that the theme song is very catchy and will make you remember it Characters : BL fans being BL fans, the straight faced man, the sparkling gay guy and his dog, all of them were cute and nice to follow during all 12 episodes. Since it's a short anime cliché personalities like this don't end up tiring Enjoyement : As I said before, if you're a BL fan you will mostly relate to the main character and find those situations funny. If you're not still give it a try, since it's so short you won't loose too much of your time anyway Overall : A fun, cute and endearing short anime with a creator that understood well BL fans
This is my first time leaving a review because the low ratings made me question if I should even watch this, however, I tried for myself because not everything is for everyone. And this anime is the perfect example. After reading a couple reviews, it was clear to me that the low ratings are due to a misunderstanding and that's quite unfortunate. First off, I'm not sure where ppl get off thinking this anime is some sort of commentary about the LGBTQIA community because it's definitely not. The anime starts off right away and gives you the premise. It is about a straight male whohappens to be a fudanshi aka a male lover of BL. BL is a genre predominately consumed by women for obvious reasons and usually it's non-straight women so it's no wonder they assume he must be gay and why has worries about ppl finding out. I am a fujoshi (and member of the LGBTQIA community) so all the jokes and references were right up my alley. The entire point of the anime was making jokes using stereotypes from BL and also about fudanshi/fujoshi. Even if you aren't familiar with the BL references, they made a point to quickly define them so outsiders could be in on them too. Although there were a few jokes that might've gone over y'alls heads though. I think they did an awesome job. The end of episode 9 really killed me though. I don't think I ever laughed so much watching an anime. I don't get into ratings on art, sound etc. But I gave this anime an 8 overall and a 10 on enjoyment because I was cracking up every episode. If the episodes were longer and there was more of an actual overarching plot that was leading to some sort of conclusion, I would've rated it higher. But as it stands, it kinda just feels like one long episode or OVA. It ends and doesn't feel finished. I would've loved more episodes. Either way, I definitely recommend it especially if you're a fan of BL.
I'm surprised I enjoyed this as much as I did. I have absolute no interest in BL, in fact I quite dislike it, so it's not a requisite to enjoying this show. I watched this purely as a comedy, and even though it was hit or miss, it was funny enough that I don't regret my time. If you're on the fence about watching this, or haven't already written it off and bothered to read this review, I'll simplify it for you: It's 35 minutes for everything, special included. There were enough jokes that landed that you'll probably at the veryleast crack a smile, and even if you're the straightest man alive, the characters are at least pleasant enough to look at and there's a couple girls here and there that are cute, too. The best friend of the MC is a good audience surrogate for those that don't like BL. If you're still undecided, my advice is just watch it and find out if you like it or not instead of being indecisive and spending more time choosing whether to watch it or not than you would just watching it.
