There’s nothing wrong about anime with clichés, even when they have been milked to death. Some clichés are actually cleverly executed in the case of deconstruction of certain themes or plot elements. Character study can also play its cards right and make an anime look beyond what it really is. But when the time calls for Hachi-nan tte, Sore wa Nai deshou to shine, it completely destroys itself and achieves absolutely nothing than wasting our time. Trying to find anything appealing about this show at first glance isn’t easy. The key visual is covered by generic looking characters and an isekai based protagonist. The synopsis readslike most isekai fantasy plot you’ve heard of these days. Oh but there’s political drama! Perhaps that could change the phase of the show, right? Wrong. This anime adheres to what most people assumes and it’s like part of a genetic code. The DNA formula for this show connects the most boring possible themes in the show with an even degenerate cast of characters. Shingo Ichinomiya is the main protagonist who takes on the role of Wendelin after waking up in a fantasy world. From the beginning, he is portrayed as a character with potential and it’s up to himself to unlock them. Thanks to Alfred Reinford’s tutorage and his own determination, Wendelin evolves into a gifted mage and even forms his own party of adventurers. And if you guess it right now, you’re right. It’s a group of female adventurers and easy to paint them as members of his harem. This is where the show takes the fall as the main female cast in the show is hammered with lazy writing. Let’s start with Elize, the priestess and perhaps most pure member of Wendelin’s party. Here, she’s portrayed with a kind heart but lacks any distinctive traits outside of her healing abilities. Louise, the martial artist fills the role of the physical fighter in the party. Somehow, the show wanted to make her into a comic relief by inserting embarrassing jokes. She also shares a rivalry with Ena, a spear wielding girl with a tomboyish personality. At first glance, she would appear to be someone capable of being a poster girl of the show but as every episode progresses, it’s hard to imagine anything noteworthy to say about Ena. She’s just another member of Wendelin’s harem added for the sake of a harem. And finally, there’s Wilma, a character that I can safely say has no personality. Debuting late in the story, Wilma’s character role brings out some of the worst parts of the show including her gluttonous appetite and offering absolutely nothing relevant. With such a character cast, I’m afraid this show hits the lowest common denominator even for a fantasy isekai. If you’re in a mood to watch a fun fantasy plot, then prepare for the worst. It’s even less fun when watching these characters engage in political drama between the higher class nobles. One of the more prominent subplot involves a political marriage between Wendelin and Elize. As fate has it, she develops genuine feelings for him and their relationship evolves beyond just politics. But unfortunately, this series doesn’t have time to fully develop that relationship. It instead jumps around between subplots by introducing elements such as martial arts tournaments, hired bodyguards for Wendelin, and other requests such as monster hunting. Between every episode, it seems the show never knows what it truly wants and fails to get us invested into the main story. Viewers will be left with concerns on how weak the plot develops until they just give up. That’s how I felt anyways by the time this anime even reached its half way point. To adapt a large volumes of novels into a 1-cour (12 episodes) anime is nothing but a recipe for disaster. There’s more than one ways to adapt a show but the studios behind this project didn’t exactly step up to the plate for its character designs or overall look. To appeal the audience, it needed a distinctive character cast even if it means their physical features. It’s sad to say but the show limited itself with a universally dull looking character roster. Every female character has a similar face and molded with lackluster dress codes. Sometimes, the anime tries to bring out their features with decorative clothes but in the end never hits its expectations. Even the monsters look insufferable such as the CGI dragon and the horrid zombies. The only saving grace for the show’s art style is the occasional world fiction that seems plausible at best. It’s not going to be a satisfying watch. I’ll say this as straightforward as possible but if you want to explore something from the fantasy genre catalog, this isn’t one to aim for. From the lazy plot writing to the uncharismatic character cast, there’s little Hachi-nan tte, Sore wa Nai deshou will offer to the audience. Do something better with your time and don’t recommend this to your friends, or in fact, anyone.
Obvios spoiles ahead but they are so predictable you are not missing anything. Every season seems to have a mandatory bad isekai, and that season was not an exception. If you wanted something original - look elsewhere, if you wanted something good - same. But let me dive into this pile of trash to show you how bad it is. First things first - visuals and sound. Generic and cheap looking 2d plus horrible and clunky CGI is a good indication of a badly made cash grab, add some generic soulless BGM and you have a full picture. Story and characters. It is your generic isekai in allof its bad ways. MC that is effectively 40 years old (and he was an office worker, not some desocialised neet) behaves like a 10 years old? Check. None of his previous experience is used? Almost check, cause he brings SUPERIOR JAPANESE FOOD to his new world. He gets everything including OP magic without any effort, gets some loyal friends who lack any personal traits except for one-two gimmicks, slays a dragon that only he could kill even though there was a more experienced mage near (of course that mage could not use required spell), gets some completely stupid reward and high social status, and don't forget a holy maiden as a waifu. All of this with almost no effort, as I mentioned previously. If it is not a generic self insert - I don't know what is. And yes, in one sentence I just retold you most of the plot, the rest is not better, cause MC never encounters any threat to his life or worthy challenge, everyone opposing him is comically bad and evil while everyone supporting him is comically good. Oh, and I forgot to mention that he basically has a harem cause what is an isekai without one? To conclude I will point out, that this anime is so boring, dull and basic that I can't recall at least one good moment in it. And I have to ask you: do you really have nothing better to do?
Every season there are a few shows that go under the radar. For me, this season Hachi-nan tte was one of those shows. While it is nothing revolutionary or amazing, it is a solid watch and a pretty entertaining show. It’s your usual isekai formula with a bit of a different take. The MC is reincarnated into another world as the 8th son of a poor noble family, meaning he basically has no rights to any of his family’s wealth or any sort of inheritance. He eventually works his way up and becomes your usual Isekai protag who is very OP. Where Hachi nan standsout for me is that unlike most isekai, its primary focus is not on an MC going to defeat a demon lord or saving the day, but on the development and bonds formed with the rest of his party, side characters, etc. It’s a very character and relationship driven story, so even if you don’t usually like isekai, you may find this one enjoyable. The art and animation are also top notch as the studio who were in charge of this are behind the legendary Doraemon series as well as Takagi san, therefore production quality remains great throughout. Unfortunately, while I appreciate the show’s attempt to world-build and develop characters, some stretches of episodes just felt boring to me and did not offer anything to really hold my attention. I imagine some rather important bits of the story were probably omitted due to time constraints as well, which is typical for adaptations. As someone whose fave genre is isekai, I found this not disappointing, but not great either. However, it is well worth a watch in my opinion. Hachi nan gets 7 concubines out of 10 from me.
At this point, I can't help feel that "Isekai" is a term that means "Educated modern guy reforms the cavemen" or "Genius is born in an archaic society." Who our main character was doesn't really matter, what does matter is the setting. Our main character, Wendlin von Baumeister (something like that), is the 8th son of a poor, low-ranking noble he is fated to a commoner lifestyle. Luckily for him, he is a prodigy that receives an magical education from another prodigy. The story details his exploits climbing up from the bottom of society. Story: Compared to the original light novel and the mangaadaptation, the animated series does not compare at all in regards to pacing, content, or dialogue. Everything has been whittled down to meet time constraints and to fit enough plot. In the original, more raunchy topics are touched on, but this adaptation has been mellowed out for reasons we can guess. Art: The art design is somewhat bland. Nothing too special. The effects were pretty, which is probably the only this I found notable. Sound: The opening was pretty jarring for me at first, but it's actually a banger. The ending was calm and nice to listen. Sound effects and the BGM throughout the series is somewhat exciting. However, I did not like the harsh piercing noise for the sound for the activation of magic. It was unique, but my ears didn't like it. Characters: The main antagonist, while somewhat cliche and one-sided, was gratifying to watch. On the other hand, the main character and his sidekicks were more or less typical characters you would find in other isekai with little ambition other than to serve the main character. Particularly, the last girl to join the harem was very boring for me. People complain about main characters having "no personality," but I say they are wrong. This girl should be deemed as the standard for "no personality." Enjoyment: I only watched the show as I read the source material. While I did get a kick out of seeing the characters I read about in motion, I can't say I would recommend this for the common watcher. As a connoisseur of "bad anime," this was good enough for what it was, but far, far, far from something I would call enjoyable.
This is my first comment, I never really did it because I didn't consider that I had seen a lot of content to be able to do it, but finally I was encouraged. I am not going to be as extensive as I am not one of the people who tries to be elitist when it comes to anime and I do not analyze every fps of what I see, I just try to have a good time distracting myself, but that does not mean that I am going to see something of garbage. About the anime "Hachi-nan tte, Sore wa Nai deshou", I can tell youthat it is neither good nor bad, I know it is a very ambiguous way to describe it, but it is as it is, it has perfectly balanced strong and bad points to enjoy it without get bored; If I had to describe the strong point of this anime it would be the development of its characters and I personally like its designs and the negative would be that the action scenes are few or simply cut in the story; Some points that can be considered may be, which according to what is understood is not faithful to his novel, that is why he can see some things without depth. As soon as I finish watching the anime, I made this post, hope it helps you in something.
To start this off my review is most likely going to be different from most seeing how I actually enjoyed this anime quite a bit. Its an anime that doesn't need a bunch of thought process and can be just watched and enjoyed. May have small spoilers** Story: 7.5/10 - the anime starts off in a pretty basic isekai format with the MC falling asleep while waiting for the rice to finish cooking then opens his eyes only to find himself in a new world as a small child. Then that's were the anime starts putting in their own elements to make their own version. Startingwith family politics and then the adventures the characters go on it starts becoming a good anime. Art: 7/10 - the art and animation are good for the most part, there were a few scenes with CGI but they were well done and in a way that it didnt break up the scene like some CGI does when just thrown in to save money or because time has run out and something need to be produced. The backgrounds and way the artists took care of the particular scene was well thought out also and helped the CGI not draw the viewers eyes away from action. The magic system didn't seem too complex and the animation for the spells wasn't anything special, although the action sequences were well done and looked crisp. Sound: 7/10 - the sound was good, the OP & ED were not bad. The OP had like a rock and roll quiere vibe with all the guitars and drums, not gunna lie tho I skipped them most of the time but the times I did listen I did enjoy them. The SFX was good too, the monsters sounded ferocious and action sounds were fairly real sounding. Characters: 8/10 - the characters were cool, I liked their design and the clothing design was good also, they had the characters in different costumes a few times and a lot of anime doesn't do that which I would like to see more anime give their characters an actual wardrobe and not just give us the same school uniform or set or armor for the character to wear all season. The monsters had good designs and had a good variety of different creatures. The voice acting for the English dubbed was really good in my opinion and made this anime better. Enjoyment: 8/10 - I really enjoyed this anime the 1st time I watched it and I still enjoyed it the 5th time I watched it. Next time I'll check out the original with English subtitles and compare the two. I enjoy how it doesn't really have a complex magic system and it has a story that's easy to follow and easy to enjoy if you like isekai anime or anime with characters that are likeable. Overall: 7.8/10 - it's a good anime that doesn't try to change the genre or make its own genre, it has its funny moments and it's action moments and a few moments that are a little more serious that help keep this anime from getting old too fast. I still smile and laugh at moments in this anime and I've seen it atleast 5 times and im sure if most of you looked at my watched anime list you would say that this is the only type of anime I watch but I only started watching anime like 16 months ago and how I started was through all the harem ecchi anime and I have an open mind when it comes to anime and life in general so that's why my list leans towards those genres but slowly I'm getting to the more emotional and crazy anime. Anyways this kinda turned into a rant and screw it I'm not deleting it lol. So this anime is a decent anime to watch and if you have an open mind and can respect the effort put into any anime then I'm positive you will not be disappointed at the end of this anime. If you stuck with it and read my review till the end, I appreciate it and hope you found it helpful. Feel free to send me a friend request if you have any questions. Also you can call me boring and say my taste in anime is trash and that's totally cool, everyone had their own opinion and it's fine if your opinion doesn't align with mine as long as you're an anime fan and aren't being hateful then we can share our thoughts and opinions on anime and enjoy it and maybe along the way, change a few minds.
Hachi-nan tte, Sore wa Nai deshou! Repost and possible spoilers: The 8th son? Are you kidding me? or Hachi-nan tte, Sore wa Nai deshou!, basically another isekai themed anime......Yep say it " Are you kidding me?" Cu'z , yes SynergySP, Shin-Ei Animation chose a light novel to have an anime adaptation as as expected it has all the cliches that every isekai anime has , TBH, not a lot of reviewer have any love for this anime. As for me this is how I see it: Story- fair 6: It maybe cliche , but ta least this anime's story plot has some silver lining in it where wesee sibling rivalry going around here , but still everything else was just too boring... Art- Decent 4: Don't be expecting any fanservices around here. Sound - Decent 4: No comment here. Character- Mediocre 5: Cu'z we have the usual thing tha every isekai themed anime has, a Red Head in Hillenbrand, Ena Susanne, a bokuko in Yorande Aorelia Oufelbeik, Louise a strong girl in von Asgahan, Wilma Etol, a loli in Elise and some retainers guys like von Arnim, Elvin and Rhoderich a old timer like Ringstat, Blanctag, what more can you ask for, given that climaxes were too predicable. Enjoyment- Poor 3: Poor as it may, I still find this enjoyable given that there wasn't a situation where the harem wasn't competing for the guy. Overall- Dreadful 2: Cu'z it was just cliché anime with a an isekai theme, and also let's not forget that the Mc was able to have all his cake and eat it too.
enter the ranks of the best isekai anime, why? + Isekai, comedy, harem, overpowered MC + born from poor nobles + build magic power and adventure + achieve and get titles and gifts from the kingdom seeing people's reactions to the achievements of the MC is satisfying for me. getting a noble title, pursuing a career in the nobility, to becoming the best. managing the territory. the drawback of this anime is the very bad fighting scenes, that's what made me give it an 8 out of 10, if the fighting scenes were there and good maybe I would give it a higher score, maybe the cause is the MC whois not very good at physical strength. I'm really looking forward to the latest season, I got a little story spoiler that the MC will be even better and get many wives, so I can't wait for it.
I can sum this one up by saying at least they got the title correct in English. The 8th Son........Are You Kidding Me? I actually watched it all? It is thanks to the abundance of time I have found myself with due to "Rona" that I watched this past episode 1. I do not think there was any aspect to this production can be called better than "poorly executed" except maybe the sound design, which was just ok. The soundtrack was ok for what it is though some of the choices on when music came in left me a little baffled. The story is a generic fantasyisekai cliche fest where nothing unpredictable will happen. The Characters could have been isekai'd from any other generic isekai/fantasy and arrived in this world a little more braindead. There was no character progress. If anything protag-kun regressed in ability to have a voice as the story progressed. The animation was mediocre at the best and generally looked like a slideshow at the few times it could have done something to set itself apart from all the other generic isekai trash that has been cropping up. I do not need to go into the quality of what little cg there was.....Berserk 2016 was better. I did not enjoy my time with this show....that said, I didn't hate it either. I think apathy sums up my feelings and expectations.
It's incredible how many reviews I've seen that simply didn't get the anime at all. For any of you who are afraid to watch this show because this anime has a 6.** score in MAL and the majority of the reviews being lower than 5, I'll advise you on somethings, but my main point in this review is to tell you that THIS ANIME INS'T BAD. First of all, let's start with the most important thing: THIS ANIME INS'T AN ISEKAI, well, theoretically it is, the description says it is, and you'll see the first episode and think "it is", WHATEVER, nothing beyond the first episodeis actually Isekai, it's just a normal Fantasy setting and that's it, no Isekai to be seen at all. By the way, I do like Isekai, so that was a letdown, BUT do not be afraid. This anime isn't about Isekai, nor Harem as the first TERRIBLE 3:30 minutes imply, or any type of Action as one of the two genres in MAL imply. So if you were expecting those, you would HATE this anime, that's why I'm here, so you can start with the right foot if you want to see this, because in my opinion this show is worth watching. Differently from half the reviews you'll see, no, this show isn't cliche, not in my opinion, and I guess you can trust me a little on this because I do have almost 500 watched anime when I'm writing this review. Sure, the Action is bad as hell and from minute one this show misleads you without any reason whatsoever. Sure, the pacing is slow and there isn't much originality in the world. Sure, this anime won't change your life or blow your mind with a big plot twist. Even so, this is still good... because what this anime is all about doesn't need those. The thing is, erase the description or anything you've seen until now about this anime, and let it tell you a story about politics and society. Yes, you heard me right, a plot which starts as Isekai, Action and Harem miraculously transforming into Politics, Comedy and Friendship FOR NO FUCKING REASON. BANG! I lied about no plot twists and your mind just blown up. This anime is still good though, maybe if it focused more on the characters and the political world it would be better than trying to reach for a younger public by adding unnecessary bad Action or making the main character more stupid than it should be. (Who knows maybe being in the brains of a child just makes you more like one or something, maybe even resetting you from your past life, making you forget who you were unconsciously) So just ignore the Action parts, forget this is an Isekai and enjoy the rest.
Another day, another trash isekai for me to consummate. I don't have to explain this show, someone died, someone got transported to isekai, someone somehow got strong power, someone got harem, someone defeat monster pew pew pew magic shoot, kaboom, explosion everywhere, get rich, get title from king. while doing that lets infuriate viewer with ton of boring shit that the MC do. The MC is 25 years old that get transported to isekai, He got his memory back when He is 5 years old in isekai, maybe just maybe when the memories is sealed all of his original personality he had has rotted or deterioriatedso much that he act like a FUCKING CHILD all the time. like wtf yo, I got so angry with his decision making and how He handle things, might as well make him not regain the memories cause it's fucking useless and the only thing he brings to the isekai is THE GLORIOUS JAPANES FOOD THAT IS SUPERIOR THAN ANY FOOD IN THE WORLD. I dunno, just just kill yourself man. The anime is set in fantasy world where there is a kingdom (generic) and the mc will get involved with the politic too. If you’re in a mood to watch a fun fantasy plot, then prepare for the worst. It’s even less fun when watching these characters engage in political drama between the higher class nobles. The stories itself is so fucking inconsistent It jumbled from plot to subplot almost every episode, the pacing is just the worst. I don't even know if there is any good thing from this anime really, the cheap ass 2d animation to save budget eventhough it is done by 2 studios (maybe this is what make the anime so fucking boring because maybe just maybe the 2 studios fucked it up all), the clunky 3d animation is worse, the sound is so generic, the op and ed isn't really catchy at all. There is 0 good moment that I can recall from this anime. to conclude, just to summarize this anime, it is boring, dull, and generic. If you watch this anime after reading this review I had 2 question for you: Why and Do you have nothing else to do?
This is one of the worst isekai i've seen, if you have a lot of free time and are used to cliche you can just watch it, otherwise i recommend you to stay away from this anime. The MC as every anime have the best powers of the world. Is very rare to have magic and he is the best. Everyone wants to use him blablabla Just in one moment of the entire show they give attention that the MC comes from another world. The characters are cliche, with no personality, no growth, i did not feel a thing when the characters were interacting, i feelthe complete anime forced. I've watched some episodes to give a chance but in the eposide 6/7 i just know it's very hard to watch this.. Story : 3 At first it promised but ended up being mediocre Character : 2 Already insult it i can't again lol
I will honestly say I should quit reading others reviews. Lately 90% of all anime I seen and like had been disliked by almost every one else. But to the anime in question well it´s not a master pieces but I had more enjoyment watching it than I had watching season 2 of Sword art or first season of shield hero. And I will Also say im not judging is as and Isekai but as a Fantasy anime. And to me it nails it´s well enough for me to enjoy it´s as a Fantasy that has all the classic tropes I enjoy. Compared to other Isekaisthis anime barely mention it and you would barely think it was an Isekai if it was not for the few points here and there. The anime almost never talked about it much like some other anime´s love to do. Instead it focused mostly on this fantasy world took it slow and was more light hearted with some drama at the end but nothing mind blowing. The reason I like this anime allot is becuse it´s not trying to hard like the 2 anime´s I mention and it tries to be it´s own thing instead of trying to live in the shadows of the giants. This anime is humble and it shows. Hence why I think it´s disliked allot becuse it´s slow and boring for most people that want epic dramas that so blown out of proportion's they to me becomes a giant convoluted storm. This anime has the harvest moon I like to take a break with away From god of war or call of duty or even Elden ring. It´s not as big as does but has it´s charm and calmness I some times need. My only tip is to judge it for your self and who knows maybe you like it or maybe you hate it.
Wow, this was a pretty long trailer. Where's the anime tho? Okay, jokes aside. The story is bland, mediocre, already seen, and rushed: there are some compelling characters and plots, like that of the MC's magic tutor or his older brother and family, but again, rushed as it is, they're not developed enough to save an otherwise generic, below-average isekai. Furthermore, the animation is mediocre, the CGI terrible, the music is uninspired (the OP is pain-up horrible), and, in general, the production value feels low. What can I say? Watch it if you have nothing else to watch - the first 3-4 episodes might even give yousome feels. But don't expect anything.
So I saw the other reviews and found them incorrect in my view. This anime isn't perfect but it does have a lot going for it and kept me coming back for it every week. This anime is your typical ISEKAI which seems to be people's main complaint, however I have to wonder why people watch ISEKAI animes if they don't like the genre. It'd be akin to me listening to rap and saying that the majority of rap music is terrible and that no-pone should like it. Sorry for the rambling of anger towards stupidity I'll get to the real review now. Story (7):The story in this anime is pretty interesting as it takes the idea of a 9-5 worker becoming a noble who has no real power as a noble as he is the eighth son. Which is pretty interesting as that concept is pretty similar to being a 9-5 worker as you technically do have power given to you in the form of money but you don't have any actual power/influence. The story then through the use of magic has the main character go up through the ranks of nobility throughout the anime. This sounds like a cop out in a review but trust me if you watch the anime and pay attention you'll notice it's not really a cop out due to how the world is set up. Now obviously I really love the story, so you probably are wondering why I gave it a 7. To be honest it's because I'm a realist, personally I give the story a 10 but for the sake of a review I have to give you an honest answer. The story with its good qualities does have its flaws coming from its attempt to juggle four plots at the same time. This juggling of four plots gives a story a minus 1 as it each plot has to take away from the other plots due to time, a personal preference, etcetera. These four plots are as follows (in no particular order). One plot is a family dispute revolving around the eldest and the eighth son. Another plot is the king's and all the nobility's manipulation of the main character and his actions. Obviously another plot is the adventuring part of the story when the main character and his party go through various dungeons and forests. Finally, the last plot is the romance of the main character and his party members. Another minus to the story actually adds to enjoyment to this anime. The anime basically starts last episode's final scenes (not exactly the same scene but very similar). The anime by doing this does take away some of the will they won't they from the adventuring throughout the anime. However, this anime isn't entirely about adventuring (luckily) so it takes the watcher out of the mindset of "will they survive" to "how do they plan on doing it". The third and final minus to the story is the one and done episode feeling. What I mean by this is that each episode has a set goal to accomplish by the end of the episode and the majority the time its accomplished by the end of the episode. While this does add to the enjoyment as you don't usually get left off on terrible cliff hangers it does take away from some of the story. Art (9): The art of the characters is great. The characters are pretty colorful. The scenery is well drawn. The buildings and the landscape also look very nice with a historical feel. I gave it a 9 due to small issues that I can't really explain (sorry). Sound (9): sound as far as I found was perfect but I've got bad ears so I probably can't pick up on some qualities within the sound (sorry). Characters (10): The characters in this anime are AMAZING. The main character actually has massive character development in how he views nobility, the world, his capabilities (outside of battle) and the people around him. The side characters actually have character development more than "OO I love MC I want to sleep with him". And this anime does something that I thought was basically impossible, I actually liked the loli character and wouldn't mind the main character getting with her. I'm not going to spoil anymore of the characters as I really want you to watch this anime and watch the characters for yourself. Enjoyment (10): I've explained why in the character section and the story section (and I need to end this long review now). Overall (8): I calculated this as most people care about the story over everything else so that brings the average (overall) down to an 8. Hope you liked this review and it was enough to get you interested in watching this anime. Hope you enjoy this anime as much as I did.
When it comes to Hachi-nan tte, Sore wa Nai deshou! it can't really get anymore generic than this but at the same time it's interesting enough to hold my attention. Sure the characters are copy and paste (except for best girl Rhodrich) but there's definitely a charm to them when it comes down to it, yes the plot is generic but it gives you a sense of fulfilment when the story raps up. And lets be honest here, who doesn't love some isekai trash here and there. The main reason I see people not liking this or even giving it a chance is because of thetypical trope of the main character being overpowered in all aspects of life, but when it comes down to it, it gives you a great sense of escapism and something you can turn your brain off while watching. This is obviously not meant to be broken down and analysed about what means what but more so it's there to just give you something to enjoy for 4-5 hours.
Honestly, with so many bad reviews, mine is one of the few that praises this anime. Story:8/10 Without all the nonsense and rediculous long plot lines, Hachi-nan tte, manages to make this story not feel out of place. Sometimes, isekai just feels out of place when the character does not fit into the story and feels like an eyesore. Wendelin lives in the story and slowly develops into a noble that even the king acknowledges. This is something that not many of the shitty isekais we get every season. Art:6/10 Not the best sometimes you can see certain parts of the low budget, but definitely nothing tobe ashamed of. This is fine for something like that. Important parts of the anime are still good. Sound:8/10 The sounds are very good and the opening and ending songs are pleasant and don't feel low budget unlike some of the isekais. Character:9/10 This is where the anime shines, the characters has many quirks and it really feels like there is a lot of development in the characters despite it being a short 12 episodes. Wendolin and his friends have grown a lot and have varying personalities. This is definitely not as bad and bashed so hard by many of the users. Enjoyment:9/10 I love isekais and this is defintely one of the better ones. With good story development and not just overpowered nonsense like in isekai cheat magician. Overall:8/10 I would recommend to give this anime a watch if you are running out of isekais to watch or just want to watch something funny and feel comfy. Definitely much more enjoyable than something in this season like Infinite dendrogram.
The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me? Rating: 5/10 Sometimes, you stumble across an anime with a title so bizarre it immediately grabs your attention. The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me? is exactly that kind of show—quirky, intriguing, and full of potential. Unfortunately, while it starts strong, it quickly loses its way, leaving you with a mix of frustration and faint amusement. The Premise: Off to a Good Start The story begins with Shingo Ichinomiya, a modern-day office worker, waking up in the body of Wendelin, a young boy in a fantasy world. Sounds familiar, right? It’s yet another isekai, but this time with a twist: Wendelin isn’tthe hero of a prophecy or the heir to a great kingdom—he’s the eighth son of a struggling noble family. This setup had so much promise, hinting at a refreshing underdog story. Initially, I was hooked. The whole “nobility with no resources” angle felt like it could bring some fresh challenges to the isekai formula. Wendelin’s discovery of his magical abilities and his struggle to rise above his family’s financial woes were intriguing... for about three episodes. What Worked (Kind of) Decent Worldbuilding: The fantasy world is fairly well thought out, with its own political systems, magical hierarchies, and societal struggles. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s functional enough to keep you interested at the start. The Animation: The visuals are serviceable, with some solid designs for magical effects and landscapes. It’s nothing breathtaking, but it doesn’t feel cheap either. Wendelin’s Magic: Watching Wendelin master his magical abilities and rise to prominence had its moments, especially early on. What Didn’t Work (And There’s a Lot) Where do I start? Pacing Issues: The story rushes through its most interesting arcs. Just as you start getting invested in Wendelin’s struggles, the show jumps ahead to him being a prodigy with wealth and status. The rags-to-riches journey happens so fast that it feels completely unearned. Flat Characters: Wendelin is likable enough, but he’s surrounded by a supporting cast that barely registers. Most of his companions feel like cardboard cutouts fulfilling generic fantasy tropes—loyal knight, flirty healer, and so on. None of them stand out or have meaningful development. Lack of Depth: For a show with such a unique premise, it doesn’t dig deep into its themes. The idea of being the “8th son” barely factors into the story after the initial setup. It’s just another isekai with a magic-wielding protagonist who becomes overpowered way too quickly. Inconsistent Tone: The anime doesn’t seem to know what it wants to be. At times, it tries for lighthearted humor; at others, it attempts serious political intrigue. The result is a messy, uneven narrative that struggles to hold your attention. My Experience Watching It Watching this anime felt like going on a hike where the trail starts off scenic and full of promise but quickly turns into a boring slog. By the halfway point, I was just waiting for it to end. That’s not to say it’s completely unenjoyable—there are a few fun moments scattered throughout. But those moments are rare and not enough to make up for the lackluster story. Why I Gave It a 5/10 To me, a 5/10 is the definition of “meh.” The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me? isn’t terrible—it’s watchable, and if you’re new to isekai or not too picky, you might even enjoy it. But for someone like me, who’s seen their fair share of isekai, it’s painfully average. It had the potential to be something unique, but it settled for being just another face in the crowd. Would I Recommend It? If you’re desperate for an isekai fix and have nothing better on your watchlist, give it a shot. Otherwise, there are plenty of other shows (Re:Zero, Mushoku Tensei, or even The Rising of the Shield Hero) that do what this anime tries to do but much better.
This show is an "Isekai"? Are you kidding me? "The 8th son? Are you kidding me?" was quite a pleasant surprise in contrast to its overall rating. This show is very underrated. I believe it sits firmly in the top half of most of the "isekai" genre. It was quite funny at times as well as interesting. It will seem, on the surface, your average, boring, played out "isekai" but the deeper it goes, the more it intrigues you as it ushers you into more nuanced parts of it's world quite splendidly. The story is a very strange mix of brilliant moments, concepts, and shortcomings all with utterly terriblepacing. They end up off-screening important moments butchering entire arcs resulting in wasted potential all around. The show presents initially with a pseudo-episodic structure of the plot, my observation is more evident when looking at the titles of each episode. This simply doesn't work for this type of story and definitely in my opinion, robbed it of true glory. What I will say is that most of what they spent time developing was actually very pleasant. The first victims of the pacing are the characters, many will say they lack depth or individuality, I do not. Whenever they're on the screen, they shine well and the interpersonal interactions or relationships felt authentic some even invoking goosebumps from me. I watched the show in the Dubbed in English and I never felt the need to switch to the original audio, they performed quite well. While most of the characters do a decent job but the MC suffers the most from these issues with the structure of the show. MC is a missed opportunity, it's supposedly an isekai, but anyone who's watched the entire thing will say, if you removed the entire setting of an isekai, not much would change, it might actually become better since time would be used better elsewhere. For comparison, If you've ever watched Soul Land(A Chinese series) this show almost perfectly intertwines the MC's knowledge and character from his past life into the new one in this world. On the contrary "Hachi-nan tte" basically ignores it all together. If we're honest it's a fantasy anime with "isekai " tacked on to broaden it's reach and because of it, the depth of the MC suffers. A sore consequence of this is that you will notice that the MC ends up reacting to the entire story, to no avail, instead of directing it. How we are transitioned from his old life to his new one, as well as liaison between them(the basis of the isekai experience), is amongst some of the worst this show has to offer, the exposition is lacking or seems forced. The animation was ample in general, but the fights suffer quite a bit here. Especially if you're sensitive to CG you will notice the pitfalls here, they weren't particularly proficient here. The fanservice is there however it's the tamest I've seen in a while so quite frankly I didn't notice it. Of course none at all would be ideal but this will do. The harem makes sense in general. Probably added one girl too much, but it didn't ruin it for me, they at least made sure to develop a guy alongside them to keep it all in check. The sound held up quite well, OP was quite good, the first 20s of it were practically unskippable. They do try to enhance some of the more audacious scenes with fitting music. The ED did the job. In short. Pros The first 20 seconds of the OP Well though out and Intimate character interactions. Wise and logical story with nuances. Animation and Sound supports the experience well. They follow the rules of their own story well. Last 4 episodes were alright. Cons Rough start. Animated Fights were generally lacking decent choreography or tact. CG was poor. Garbage Pacing Isekai genre/tag basically editor tacked-on Plotlines barely developed. Off-screened important moments. MC development or characterization suffers as a result of the failed shoehorned isekai genre People will also claim that the characters lack individuality, i disagree. Apart from the MC it was apt, I worry that if they did waste time on such things it would only hurt the story. The time it takes to add development and the depth of individuality(in question) commonly ruins these experiences. Animation 6 Sound 7 Story 6 Characters 7 Enjoyment 7 33/50 (6.6/10) It's been almost 4 years since they released this with almost no sign of a sequel. I think it's best to read the source, either the Manga or the Light Novel. I enjoyed this show enough to anticipate a sequel, the highs were quite interesting and out of the norm in terms of depth for most "isekai". The manner it was all stitched together, however, will not leave a lasting impression. At this point It's very obvious that these authors write their fantasy story first, then replace the origins with a bland and uninspired isekai opening, presumably after a tip from the editors. This show is a great example of this pervasive phenomenon. To conclude, this is a pure fantasy show, not an isekai for all intensive purposes. Calling it an isekai only makes it worse than what it truly is. Watch this show after all the other better fantasy stories have been fleshed out. Hope this helps.
