Before diving into Botsuraku, you should set your expectations clearly: it's a low-stakes harem popcorn power fantasy—nothing more, nothing less. If you're looking for depth, gripping storytelling, or profound character arcs, you'll be disappointed. But if you enter ready for easygoing entertainment and a casual magic spectacle, you're in for a surprisingly enjoyable ride. I saw the poor ratings before mostly binging it, so my expectations were set appropriately - which allowed me to enjoy it. The anime itself is unabashedly shallow in narrative complexity, yet it shines in one particular area: its commitment to magic. Unlike many fantasy series that skim over their magical systems,Botsuraku indulges fully in its magical elements. The main character's pure, almost obsessive pursuit of magic for magic’s sake provides consistent enjoyment, especially if you're a fan of detailed spellcraft and imaginative magical systems. Conflict does arise, but it's never high-stakes or particularly tense. Characters rarely face genuine loss, and the cast continuously expands, contributing to a relaxed atmosphere rather than meaningful drama. Think comfort food anime - nothing groundbreaking, but deeply satisfying if you know exactly what you're getting into. While objectively not a standout (it currently holds a 5.94 rating on MAL), for magic enthusiasts who want something undemanding yet engaging in its portrayal of spellcraft, it genuinely delivers. Personally, I'd rate it a 9, fully recognizing that this reflects subjective enjoyment rather than overall quality. Objectively, it's worse. But, I enjoyed it. TLDR: Go into Botsuraku expecting a laid-back harem fantasy brimming with magical indulgence. If that aligns with your tastes, it’s certainly worth watching - and even rewatching - in the future.
I'm a Noble on the Brink of Ruin, So I Might as Well Try Mastering Magic — Come one, come all, try as much and well, because this show just isn't it, and DON'T YOU DARE start this one. I'm not going to spare my crass words here: the one author, who, like Jujutsu Kaisen's Satoru Gojo, claims, "Throughout the Heavens and the Earth, I alone am the honoured one", by proclaiming himself to be the "fastest in the (AniManga) industry", it's Taiwanese author Nazuna Miki back on the anime scene once again to show off just how bad (or good) he manages to circumvent andexploit the already oversaturated aspect that is the fantasy genre, because God forbid that "one is not enough; I must have quantity to show quality." If you thought that Summer 2023's Level 1 dakedo Unique Skill de Saikyou desu a.k.a My Unique Skill Makes Me OP Even at Level 1, is already borderline mediocre enough, this Winter's season's Botsuraku Yotei no Kizoku dakedo, Hima Datta kara Mahou wo Kiwametemita a.k.a I'm a Noble on the Brink of Ruin, So I Might as Well Try Mastering Magic, is pretty much his "signature" copy-paste rhetoric for pumping out stories that have already been proven and done better by others. Worse yet, to suffer 2 more works of his that is already in the pipeline of anime adaptations, I'm dutifully praying to the anime gods to somehow cancel this man and lay instant karma for a stupidly wired brain that just DOES NOT STOP fueling the hand that feeds the rakes of cashing in on the fantasy craze. But enough of my rants; I know what you're thinking: what did this soulless man copy-paste for this work here that gets the traction of hate this season? There's only one answer: novelist Fuse's much more popular series of Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken a.k.a That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, and it's easy to see its influence. Here's the breakdown: - Isekai reincarnation? Check, but instead of a unique character (like a creature or something), it's a lowly noble family being the nth son who, due to some weird (but purposeful) laws, must accomplish significant deeds once every 3 generations. And this falls on the reincarnated 5th son of Liam Hamilton, who discovers the one thing that will save them from getting demoted: magic. - Power struggles? Rimuru definitely didn't have that problem when he first met Storm Dragon Veldora, but Liam definitely faced such incidents in his own family to the point of jealousy for those who came before him (like the first son Albrevit), whom he only has the support of his one-generation-older brother Bruno, which after a rather stupid affair of releasing a powerful dragon out of spite, becomes Liam's personal confidante with the Evil Dragon-cum-Guardian Radon. Also, while Rimuru faces a lot of issues, at least he acknowledges difficulties while being OP as heck; Liam is the total opposite, as nothing, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, ever fazes him, because even the toughest problems are resolved by his magic nevertheless. - Fantasy-like harem? I thought it was a cynical irony when all Nazuna Miki was ever good for is his depiction of female heroines, but it's pretty much confirmed in this show that he can ACTUALLY write competent characters, female ones at that...albeit, to the low, low cost of abundance that proves that too much (or many in this case) is never a good thing. And also, he writes antagonists like how every 3rd-rate author likes to do, by cheaping out on characterization for simplicity just to add to the number. Not the worst offence when considered from an average standpoint, but definitely one that's noteworthy to each and every one of his works towards zero plot logic and character depth. Obviously, a work like this has to get paired with some minimalist direction, and this is coming from Studio Deen's in-house director Kenichi Ishikura, who has not been seen in a significant schedule since Winter 2014's Yuri rom-com Sakura Trick, which contributed much to his personal ousting from Shaft (as a once prolific up-and-coming director under famed director Akiyuki Shinbo's tutelage). The lack of experience for 10 years since then, only dabbling as much into either storyboarding or episode directing, definitely proves the sin of time when it comes to his rather lacklustre performance, which ironically, displays much in the show itself of a work that, with it being bad enough, not much effort is truly needed to make this stand out. And of course, I need not mention that every work that has the Studio Deen x Marvy Jack collab for animation production is an instant bomb (if you don't know what I mean, refer to Nanatsu no Taizai a.k.a Seven Deadly Sins' infamous Season 3). About the only actual thing I like about the show is saji's OP. The J-pop rock band certainly has struggled trying to make noteworthy Anisongs over the years, and for a few good years, I thought that they were just your average pop group...until the OP song came around, which actually IS good; colour me surprised. I could care less about Miho Okasaki's ED, however forgettable it is. Ultimately, just put in the mindset that while this show exists, the basic TL;DR should already tell you that it's not worth your time trying out Botsuraku Yotei no Kizoku dakedo, Hima Datta kara Mahou wo Kiwametemita a.k.a I'm a Noble on the Brink of Ruin, So I Might as Well Try Mastering Magic, because there are better shows out there that demand even just a fraction of your precious time. God, even the "turning off your brain" unspoken rule JUST DOES NOT cut it.
The low rating of this show seems to ]be purely based on unrealistic expectations. This is isekai slop. It tells you it's isekai slop from the start. At no point does it pretend to be something greater. So why are people complaining about it being generic and poorly written? Come into this show with the same mentality you bring to a bag of chips. It's a brief, cheap, and low quality experience that will entertain for a few hours. The characters are one note, but fun. The premise is generic, but easy to follow without thought. The animation is average to bad, but it's serviceable and notunpleasant. Basically, turn off your brain and use this to kill some time. Expecting more from it is a waste of effort.
After doing a preliminary review, then writing an updated version, I have now finished watching this utter garbage and can put out my final review, and bleach this trash from my mind. This show is absolutely terrible, and even I, someone who can typically find enjoyment in the most panned, poorly-reviewed, trashy isekai, struggled with and had to force myself to finish this absolute slop. It's annoying because there are hints and moments where I think "this could have been another Tensura" and parts where I think the story could go somewhere interesting and explore what's going on in a more in-depth fashion, however, it neverdoes and just casually fades into the next scene of the MC being some clueless idiot with the powers of a god. The MC is supposedly a reincarnated individual, having been a commoner in his previous life, while this time he gets a do-over as part of a noble family, albeit one on the downtrend. This is only mentioned in the anime's blurb, as it is never once explained in the current episodes that have aired. The most we get is a couple of completely glossed-over comments, such as "oh, this is different from my old life", but we have no idea whatsoever of what this old life looked like, was, or entailed. There was zero reason for this show to even have the "isekai" label. As for the meat and potatoes of this serving of slop, in the MC's "new" world, people who can learn magic are rare, yet he has an uncanny ability to learn every single spell he sees. A chance meeting with some random guy (that hasn't appeared since) then allows him to seemingly learn every spell that has ever existed, sky-rocketing him to stardom. The anime tries to show that the MC trains himself over a long period to use these spells, but what's actually shown is that he learns them within about 3 seconds. This season seems to cover 2 arcs, which have barely any cross-over between them and almost make it feel like I started watching a spin-off series or a second season part way through season 1. The first arc/half just about covers the MC's noble household and develops the world to the bare minimum acceptable, while he starts an adventurer squad with 2 girls, who later become his familiars who cannot disobey him (so slavery in all but name). There's setup for an "evil dragon fiend" that all the townspeople are terrified of, but of course, the MC shows up and within 2 minutes this powerful "big bad" ends up another familiar, while about 5 minutes after that, this supposed terrifying threat is now being revered as a "great dragon god", and a couple of episodes later, this big badass dragon god is turned into a kind of loli... Plot consistency be damned, the MC needs to be even more OP and have more opportunities to be glazed! After this point, we're suddenly thrust into "Tensura: Temu Edition", with the entire show pivoting to the MC setting up a nation, initially of monsters, who all fawn over him and then get named and become bishoujo/bishounen human-looking beings, while his 2 adventurer buddies are completely forgotten about and don't even appear for several episodes. Of course, yet again, as this entire anime is running at 400x speed, within the space of 20 minutes, this nation goes from being a couple of huts, to a fully-fledged city taken straight out of the 14th century and an episode after that, we're now in a fully-fledged "magic city" with asphalt-looking roads straight out of the 20th century. The plot tries to set up some stakes, some political intrigue, the typical forced harem via "noble marriage" and what-not and... I've put more effort into this review than the author and studio have put into this anime. The MC is glazed for everything he does, he excels at everything he does, he just hand-waves away any "threat" (if they can even be called that), but then on the flipside, despite being a noble, he's completely clueless about anything outside of his magic, where even then despite being stupidly OP and godlike, he's still shown to somehow still be a noob with a lot to learn... I think at this point, the author realised the MC was already too ridiculously OP, so just made that the new "baseline" for him, which then allows the "plot" to progress further. I just can't with this show. It's absolutely terrible. It is so generic, so bland, such a nothing-burger that even turning your brain off doesn't work. The animation is poor, the character designs are bland and uninspired and the plot has no rhyme or reason to it. It's trying to be a mix of "Reincarnated as the 7th Prince" from Spring 2024 and "Reincarnated as a Slime", but it's failing to capture anything at all of either of those shows, and certainly not putting in the effort to even reach 10% of either of those shows. I've changed my initial rating from 3/10 to 2/10, which I think is a first for me. It's not a 1/10 because there have been ~2 episodes so far that were just about watchable. Don't bother with this.
I honestly don't understand the other reviews. So I start with them: yep, they are correct. Harem (for no reason), good shoes MC (you know, the pushover "virgin loser" personality, who, in adult games, gets NTR exactly because he "needs to look away and flee" if a woman hints that she has sexual-related desires towards him, even if in relationship), everyone looks like MC best friend with woman being hot, cute or sexy, and male being hunks and other stereotype, and of course, all are the most kind, friendly, caring, loyal, bla bla bla bla because they are serving MC, while anyone who is against iscunning, scared, arrogant, offended that MC exist, or are supporting MC for no reason other then MC privilege. So yeah, I fully understand why so many people gave a bad review and low score. So what does my score reflect? Magic. Yes, this is something I don't see the reviews talking about (and no, I did not waste my time reading every last one of them). Did you ever get hooked on an anime because of the MC's passion for something? Well, this is exactly why I gave this score. You learn a lot about possibilities regarding magic, including how to use them. To rephrase it, if magic was real, this would be one of those anime people would recommend as "learning material," even if the rest of the story... you know, like the Matrix trilogy (btw, there is also a fourth one, but it's more of a parody). So for this, I gave such a high score, exactly because the anime was focused on magic as passion.
mhmm when i try to review this the first ever scene i cant forget is how nonchalant the flow is when mc gets his fiance/waifu, like i was flabbergasted because the mc and the waifu was talking about it being married in the future sht but the way they talk was like "were friends now" so i was amaze by that cause theres no reaction to them whatsoever so my thoughts was like "is that how nobilty really is!?" sorry can't help to say this since its the first image comes to my mind when recollecting what i saw in this anime, anyways its kinda bad,if you watch the show you may can't tell, like wtf is this its like watching a kids show honestly, no disregard that this is worst than kids show, the plot was really there but its only good way to make him go faster to become a king or build his country some sht, sorry i dont know how to explain this but its like plot is way too scripted and good benefits only so mc can have strong status power sht, its like im watching procedure being process perfectly in the flesh, il describe it another way "its like teaching your kid to become good person without experience/exposure to become bad/sturggle or etcc.. and that kid make it happen! the pacing is also fast, every time mc realize hes getting stronger all he thinks is how many he can shot fire missiles magic at once sht or whatever it is called which is annyoing to me LIKE BRUH STOP WITH THE FIRE MISSILE ALREADY YOUR LIKE A A KID PRACTICING AND PERFECTING YOUR POSE, i mean i cant retort to that since he literally is a kid i want to rate 3-4 but compromise to 5 since they have kinda good female character design and scarlet was best of them in swimsuit
I have only 1 thing to say. The original story writer must have committed suicide watching this adaptation. The story is good. But the direction required to make it fire was severely ignored. It feels like ChatGPT story progress is better than this. I am also currently writing a web novel, so I am expressing my feelings as a fellow writer Story Unique? No, if you look at anime Art style is fitting for the story? Yes, art is good Character Design? They were overpowered, overly stupid etc etc Did the characters react to situations and events in a realistic way? No, obviously not. They lacked emotion in theadaptation I believe no real trash anime hunter like me will like this
I am NOT sure WHY people are hating on this anime so much when it is without a doubt a very fun and lighthearted isekai! It feels like Reincarnated as a Slime with more world building elements from Tsukimichi Moonlit Fantasy. I have ALWAYS loved anime that developed their worlds and this anime does a great job doing just that. MOST anime focus way too much on the main character and their story and leave the world itself very bland and undeveloped but you do not have to worry about that with this anime. Yes Liam is the MC but I'd say that the WORLDof I'm a Noble of the Brink of Ruin receives most of the development. Liam's only goals are to learn magic and magic the people around him happy and as he becomes the KING of a new nation he does all of that and MORE!!!! If you are looking for a lighthearted isekai with world building elements and LOTS of magic then I recommend giving this anime a watch!
I Watched It So You Don't Have To. Overall, it's just a bad anime. The visuals are bad. Minimal animation, bad backgrounds, characters are low detailed. The sound is also generic. The plot here is a copy of "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime". Only worse. It's a cheap, lazy imitation. Same dragon, same building a city, same making a bunch of servants and familiars. Even Rimuru's stuffy office meetings look more intense than this. Mc-kun does everything with no sweat and no effort. There's not an ounce of suspense in any of the fights. There's no spectacle either. There's just nothing to see.One explosion from "Konosuba" is more colorful than the whole anime. Furthermore, the plot is logically flawed and contradictory. Starting with the fact that mc-kun kills the dragon's children and the dragon is happy about it. And what is the teacher of magic, that told all in a few hours to such a genius mc-kun, showed, gave ancient grimoire. And all this after he has seen the boy for the first time in his life. This anime also tries to parasitize on the ideas of others by copying content. Wolfgirl is very similar to Delta from "The Eminence in Shadow" in her behavior. There's harem-ish, but AIs are generating more interesting characters these days. It all looks like a hastily made potboiler, just for show. No idea, no execution. This is a bad anime. I don't recommend watching it. There are a ton of better titles than this. There's nothing to see here.
A Disappointing Dive into Mediocrity At first glance, this anime presents itself as a lighthearted adventure, but the deeper you go, the more apparent its flaws become. What starts as a seemingly promising fantasy series quickly devolves into a shallow, uninspired mess where nothing feels earned, and every development is predictable. The protagonist is the biggest issue. He stumbles into magic, and without any effort, he’s suddenly a prodigy. Every spell works perfectly on the first try, every challenge is effortlessly overcome, and every other character exists solely to admire him. There's no struggle, no real stakes, and no depth to his growth—it’s just an endless stringof successes handed to him on a silver platter. The supporting cast isn’t much better. Most of them have no real personality beyond blindly adoring the protagonist. Conflicts are resolved too easily, often in the most clichéd ways possible, making it hard to feel any real investment in the story. Even elements like dragons and grand magical battles fail to add excitement because they lack any real weight or impact. Overall, this anime feels like it was written with the mindset of "magic is cool, strong characters are cool, and dragons are cool," but without any effort to craft a compelling story. It’s a frustrating watch because it had the potential to be something more, but instead, it settles for being an unimaginative power fantasy with no real substance.
This anime had potential, but it completely wastes it. The only real positives are the animation and voice acting. Visually, it’s polished, and the cast delivers solid performances. Unfortunately, everything else falls apart. The plot is a chaotic mess. Each episode tries to cram in far too much—new characters, dramatic reveals, emotional moments, and action—all without any real buildup. Conflicts are introduced and resolved within minutes, leaving no time for tension or emotional payoff. It feels more like a highlight reel than a coherent story. Character development is almost nonexistent. One of the worst examples is the dragon character, who is supposedly important but gets swapped outrandomly with no explanation. It’s confusing and makes the story feel even more disjointed. The relationships are another weak point. The way female characters instantly become close to the protagonist is completely unrealistic. There’s no chemistry, no relationship arc—just immediate attachment that feels like lazy writing and pure wish fulfillment. It asks the audience to suspend disbelief to an unreasonable degree. The action scenes are just as underwhelming. They lack energy, creativity, and any sense of real danger. The choreography is dull, and nothing about the fights stands out or adds value to the story. Even the music, while technically fine, feels like it’s doing damage control. It’s clearly trying to add weight and emotion to scenes that aren’t strong enough to carry themselves. You can hear the effort, but it can’t make up for weak storytelling. Overall, I’m a Noble on the Brink of Ruin is a frustrating watch. With decent visuals and voice work, it could have been at least passable—but the poor pacing, shallow characters, unrealistic dynamics, and lazy writing drag everything down. Even as a “so-bad-it’s-good” watch, it misses the mark.
'I'm a Noble on the Brink of Ruin, So I Might as Well Try Mastering Magic' is one of my favourite anime this season though it has some negative reception. It's an isekai about a middle-aged man who became a boy from a lowly noble family and eventually became powerful. Liam wanted to learn magic and soon met a mentor who introduced him to a ring containing grimoires of different magic spells. And from there, it's about becoming more and more overpowered to an absurd degree. Many anime viewers don't like the fact that Liam is overpowered, and I agree to some extent. Its major mistakeis that these powers don't have much use for it. He isn't trying to level up his powers so he can defeat an enemy who is threatening to destroy the world. Despite that, for some reason, it's enjoyable even though the battles are lame or moderately challenging. It has a slice-of-life feel, and this feeling is reinforced by the type of music being used. It's mostly relaxing and there's not much tension. I suspect that it is leaning towards a slice of life even though one would have the impression that all these aspects of becoming more powerful are about being an adventurer or fighting exciting battles. In that case, this anime should be entitled 'How to Build a Powerful Nation in a Relaxing Manner.' This idea is great. The way Liam always becomes even more powerful every episode is no different to acquiring nuclear warheads as a deterrent from foreign conquest. The problem is that the writing is amateurish, and the author has fumbled on many details. It doesn't take away from my enjoyment of it, but do note of it if you're thinking of watching this. I don't remember any ecchi moment in this anime, even though it has an obligatory beach episode. Its character designs are a bit better than average. Some may note the similarity of Scarlet's design to Grace in the anime 'From Bureaucrat to Villainess.' It features a few notable seiyuu, although I don't find their voice acting particularly notable to recommend based on this factor alone. The characters could have featured less experienced seiyuu, and you probably won't notice any difference. If you've seen so many isekai, perhaps skip this one. So many people are citing other isekai that I haven't even seen, which explains why I have a different experience. Not everyone has seen as many isekai titles nor should anyone desire to watch everyone. The majority of isekai including this one would probably include major tropes and do a little of something to differentiate itself from others. Thus, your enjoyment or lack of it may be dependent on stuff you've seen before, so you're mileage may vary. At the end of the day, this anime is a boy's fantasy and it has a certain demographic in mind who will enjoy it; I'm thinking of a random youngest child who would like to imagine what it would be like to do your life all over again. It has a nice slice-of-life feel but its early emphasis on mastering magic can and does set the wrong expectation that this anime is primarily about adventures and defeating monsters.
I would love to say this anime is pretty much like a light snacks for you to watch. But seriously, The main character never find a big problem, so the development character is super flaw. Just like "i woke up, learn magic, always win, make a big familia, become king" and being the perfect main character in author wet dream. i mean if they want to add more spices and filling, surely 12 episodes is not enough. So yeah. not a big recommend but if you want it as a light snack (like what i said in my first sentence) then go ahead watch it.
What's is there to say about this? It's a lighthearted romp when you just want something to watch that allows you to turn your brain off. It's as mid as mid can be in every possible way. It's not good or bad, it just is. It borrows story beats and ideas from several other fantasy isekais which is the norm. If you like isekai's and fantasy with a bit of the old harem charm thrown in you might enjoy it for what it is. Unless you want something that is also action heavy then this is not for you. Credit where it's due,it does have some interesting takes on how magic can be used and since it isn't very action heavy, the way the I'm an OP Magic user trope is not done in the typical fashion. Other than that it's lacking anything that would make it stand up in any good way. If you just want something that's relaxing to watch and are a fan of the genre, give it a whirl, you may enjoy it.
This has got to be the blandest and most uninspired plot I've watched in an isekai. Even distilled water has more flavor on how bland this anime is. Usually for bad isekai, there would at least be 1 or 2 things that is unique and or an eyecatcher for the anime, be it comedy, random quirkiness, a character that carries the show. This anime has nil. MC earned his skill with little to no effort. Every inconvenience in the story building is BSed by magic by the MC. Heroines are more of a pretty jewelry that the MC wear. I would like to say thatthe story is flat and linear but the plot does not even move left and right. It's more like a dot. It does not offer anything at all.
This is Isekai paint by numbers, 8th son meets 7th prince, meets Tensura, stick them in a blender and this is what you get There is nothing new or unique here, there is nothing special about this, it is just the most average isekai slop going Now I love Isekai trash, and as isekai trash this has some merit as it is enjoyable to watch, but that doesn't mean I won't hammer it for its flaws. To be clear none of the following is spoilers as its all in the PVs and the Image for the anime So to copy 8th son, we have the youngest child of aNoble family in decline which is impoverished (or in this case, about to be) and only the eldest stands to inherit, meaning our isekai protag will have nothing and needs to find a way to make a living, chooses to turn to magic, and to adventuring, this changes the MC's fortunes (literally) gaining wealth, prestige and eventually land to develop, oh and also he's on good terms with most of his brothers except his eldest who resents him. To copy Tensura, MC encounters a dragon, who he befriends / absorbs / makes a pact with, MC encounters monsters who serve MC and get massive power-ups and change forms after MC names them, MC builds a town / nation To copy 7th prince, MC is obsessed with magic to the point MC often ignores everything else, MC is obsessed with how magic works and invents new spells, MC creates new magic weapons because he can, MC becomes the most powerful mage Yeah that is how bad it is with the copy paste story, when I said Isekai pant by numbers I wasn't joking. Does an anime need to be 100% original? No, but it either needs a good hook, or a good twist / gimmick and it needs to be well written and do what it does well, this does none of that, there is no hook, there is no twist / gimmick, and the writing lacks effort. The pacing is bad, it is all over the place, it forgets characters, forgets plot points, forgets what it is up to, this is some of the worst writing I've seen since SAO, but without any of the potential that had, and fortunately no NTR in sight. The characters are forgettable, so much so even the MC seems to forget about them Things I liked The nation / city building aspects are fine, just overlook some plot holes and it's not terrible The exploration of magic is pretty good It is mindless fun, its enjoyable in its flawed way The animation is standard, the OST is standard, there was nothing terrible in the animation, the character designs are again, standard, there is nothing special here The reality is, there are much better anime that do all of this to a much better degree As an anime, I can't in good conscience recommend this, but as a mindless 'isekai trash' anime, it's alright, it passes the time, its a bit of fun, there are definitely worse out there.
