One day, a man claiming to be a god suddenly hacks a certain school's intercoms, ordering all of its students to team up and prepare to be transported to another world. There, they will be given special skills in the hopes that they become that world's heroes and defeat the Demon King that ravages the land. The initial transfer is a success. However, Seiichi Hiiragi, who suffers from his classmates' constant bullying due to his somewhat undesirable appearance, is left behind as no one is willing to be his teammate. Nevertheless, the self-proclaimed god decides to send Seiichi to the parallel world and lets him join his peers. Unfortunately, this fateful ordeal causes Seiichi to arrive at a location deep in the forest, far not only from his schoolmates but from human civilization as well. Desperately searching for a way to change his predicament, Seiichi's miserable days only seem to continue to worsen. Yet when all hope seems lost, Seiichi discovers a strange fruit known as the "Fruit of Evolution"—which may be his first step toward a significantly better future. [Written by MAL Rewrite]

Lot's of hate for this show. I thought it was pretty fun.....and at no point did I want to stop watching. It kept me out of my own head for a little while, which is all that really matters to me. Nothing new, nothing ground breaking, nothing deep, no emotions evoked, and nothing amazing. You can see everything coming from a mile a way....but what's wrong with that? I've dropped many shows that are similar to this, but for some reason I never had the urge with this one. Oddly enough....it actually entertained me. It was light, simple, cheesy, and fun. I'm gladthat I found it and I recommend it as a time killer.....as long as your expectations are realistic you might enjoy it. I'd like to see another season somewhere down the road.....cause there's always a show hole to be filled.
I love Isekai. I hate Isekai, when the fantasy world is stale. I love Isekai, when it's done right. I hate isekai, when it just feels oh-so-wrong. I love Isekai, more so in the form of parodies because they are comedic and subvert expectations. I hate Isekai, when the content amounts to nothingness. I love Isekai, even when it feels like trolling trash. I hate Isekai, when it's unbelievably actual trash. I love Isekai, but Shinka no Mi is legit dysfunctional trash deep down to the very core. I hate Isekai. And the cycle repeats itself all over again. Where thou art are you, Isekai God??? Hoo boy, where should I really start with this one? It's no doubt yet another one of those shows with the Isekai Reincarnation setting, combined with the story that's very akin to Isekai Spider or even Arifureta, and has comedic moments like last season's Tsukimichi. But make no mistake when I tell you that Shinka no Mi a.k.a The Fruit of Evolution by novelist Miku has none of all of the above's exquisite taste whatsoever, in the span of the wide standard wish-fulfillment fantasy that peaks at its most ridiculous and garish. I kinda liked Spider-sekai and Arifureta even more so, even if the animation is garbage, much less Tsukimichi being self-aware about its parody and elevates that comedy into something worth watching. Sure, Shinka no Mi has all that, but trust me, you'd find yourself gawking in awe of how horrible the absurd story plot is with the same character archetypes gone haywire up to 11, coupled together with yet again, horrible animation. Hello, what is the Hotline that I can call for help!? The story itself (or plot rather) can be dumbed down to these obvious truths: imagine if the MC is like Arifureta's Hajime Nagumo or Spider-sekai's Kumoko playing the usual reincarnation formula with his/her class but has the looks like Tsukimichi's Makoto Misumi, only fatter. That's who Seiichi Hiiragi is: an ugly fatso that with the dawn of the Isekai reincarnation light, gets transported away from the rest of his class, whose duty is to repel the Demon Lord and his army. Since Seiichi didn't like the fact that even in the fantasy world he still looks ugly and unglam AF, there's the secret formula: the Fruit of Evolution. Eat 10 of these and you'll evolve into to becoming the stereoptypical good-looking generic MC #69420 who is certified OP and continues to gain more altitude and powers to become ridiculously strong. The best part is that these nut-like "fruit" are abundant everywhere, so levelling up is a cinch. When in an Isekai did it become so easy and lax just to be the center of attention? Only in Shinka no Mi, you will be. The cast of characters are a total joke. Seiichi Hiiragi for one, IDK why he has such a childlike voice, only dialled up to 11 in the cringe aspect, and I'm in total disbelief that someone like Hiro Shimono could VA his character. It's as if that Hiro Shimono had been inhaling helium just to get that intended voice, and it's very annoying that I had to turn down the volume umpteen times just to avoid hearing Seiichi's rug-tug expressions. The harem of girls that come after Seiichi's way aren't so hot either. Beginning with the red gorilla Saria, I always find myself facepalming the unbelievable relationship between human and gorilla, not even after the transformation into a pretty-looking girl with HanaKana's voice in it. The next person to come: the Calamity Artoria Gremm, who's claim to fame is only that she is a misfortune through and through. Everyone who swarms around her leads to their deaths(resulting in her Calamity nickname), and it only took both Seiichi and Saria to accept her that she is willing to drop her guard and confide trust in them. While I can confide that at the very least both Saria and Artoria had the most screentime around Seiichi for their characters to be fleshed out, the one that come after only becomes more ridonculous like Lulune the donkey, Louise Balze the Valkyrie warrior, Oliga Calmeria the slave cat and Karen Kannazuki (going off the actual photo with the obvious harem of girls). I understand that harems can be both good and bad, but while Tsukimichi has beautiful god-like mature adult beasties at Makoto's side, Shinka no Mi just goes with the flow to accept all that comes Seiichi's way, regardless of their origin stories. If you want to incorporate a harem, fine, make sure that it has appeal, but not to the stupidity of being sacrilegious with the absurdity that mind-boggles your audience. You want to know what's the bigger mind-boggling sin of this show? The garbage animation, that despite feel. and Children's Playground Entertainment (the studio producing this season's Saihate no Paladin a.k.a The Faraway Paladin) collab name on this list, both studio's aren't at fault for this for helping (cooperation) with the production. If you need an entity to blame, vent your frustrations at the totally relative and unknown studio Hotline instead, of which funnily enough, adding the production staff (even the director) altogether, all went into definite hiatus since 2013 (well, except for scriptwriter-cum-series composer Gigaemon Ichikawa who mainly worked on children shows). That should immediately tell you that as much work as they've done in the past, no amount of time gone will ever repair the fact that this show was lazily done and just to get by the day for "acceptance" quality. I don't even think that the novelist Miku also batted an eye on his/her work, because the earlier incarnation of yet another work of his/hers (Isekai de Cheat Skill) just shows that the writing prowess will forever be trash. But since trash work goes hand-in-hand with even trashier production, the adage of "birds of a feather flock together" is the right way that I can sum all of this. Sound-wise, it's also outright bad. Is this really that dull and mundane, because it truly is to let the OST of Yoshino Nanjo's OP and Poppin'Party's ED sink the fact that they're both unimpressive songs, and not even mediocre, let alone decent ones at that. Usually I don't expect much of the music department to ever hold itself up, but wow is this some of the worst OSTs that I've heard in watching anime for years, and I'm an anime OST Maestro myself to really know what's hot and what's not. You don't need me to tell you that throughout this review I've been ranting that after the brillance of Summer 2021's Tsukimichi as a parody Isekai, with Shinka no Mi, we finally felt what it was like on the other end of the spectrum, where the grass is definitely not greener on the other side. For one good thing we can trade for a bad thing, but Shinka no Mi is a show that if you liked what you saw, that's because you watch it as a troll or joke to get the enjoyment values out of it. I really want to laugh at how horrible this show is, but my brain cells have suffered too long just to voice all of these "shitty" opinions. Trash? Definitely. Worth watching? NOT recommended.
This show, or rather, this fantasy fufillment of an adaptation lives up to its standards of being one of the biggest jokes this year. Jokes are meant to bring laughter but for Shinka no Mi Shiranai Uchi ni Kachigumi Jinsei, that translates to an embarassing testament of exactly what's wrong with the isekai trope. When you have a gorilla as a main character, there's more than red flags than raised. We live in a world where literally anyone can come up with an idea and put it together to sell a product. I don't know what the author was thinking when they crafted this show'spremise but is anyone actually impressed by the promotional material on this MAL page? If you look over the preview videos and promotional poster, what you see is a boring generic main protagonist surrounded by a colorful cast of cute girls. Oh wait, you can barely see the guy! He's there in the background looking like a fool, because that's what he is, at least from his past. In the fantasy world, male protagonist Hiiragi Seiichi turns into a champion with a gorilla girl as a companion. Before you start firing questions at what that means, it basically spells out all the wrong ingredients on how to sell a proper story. Now, I will say the anime makes a bold attempt at trying to win the audience over. What went wrong? It's because Hiiragi is the one of the most boring characters you'll witness. He's just a kind person with no special traits or characteristics that defines his character. Really, that's about all I can say for Hiiragi because his character has no depth, development, or unique qualiies. Gorilla girl Saria isn't any better after she turned into a human through evolution. Yeah, that's right. She went from an animal into a human because the show's plot demands it. When we see her as a human, there's really no change to her personality at all. And really, she's just as lackluster as Hiiragi. The rest of the character cast are far from intriguing. We have tomboy adventurers like Altria, to sadists like Ellis. Others such as the cat girl Origa Carmelia (that's right, this anime can't be complete with a cute catgirl) or Valkyrie leader Louise felt like something crafted with no coherent effort. The only character that added some slight interest to the show may be Kannazuki Karen. She adds a more mature tone to the anime but unfortunately, the show's plot makes little effort to develop her story. To sum it up, this anime's character cast seemed like it was made by a whim or as if the author wrote them from their wildest fantasies. Among the various sins this anime commits, the story is perhaps the biggest bust. Let's face it, this anime's plot really had no direction or even an idea what it's trying to do. Some episodes introduces to new characters while almost every episode jokes around with itself. The jokes in the anime quickly wears out because if you've seen it once, it feels like you've seen them all. And finally, don't expect this anime's character relationships to be deep or meaningful. An interspecies romance between Hiiragi and Saria is best described as childlike at best and dumpster fire at worst. And that's what sums up this anime altogether. It's a dumpster fire. No, studio feel, Children's Playground Entertainment, and its producers could not save this anime from being a bad joke with its animation quality. The character designs looks cartoony and outdated compared to modern standards. Every scene in this anime feels like a sitcom gone wrong. Really, even the action scenes are mostly forgettable and the overall chereography kills any sort of value the show had. I'm sorry to say this but Shinka no Mi Shiranai Uchi ni Kachigumi Jinsei really represents the worst of what isekai can offer. It's that terrible.
'The Fruit of Evolution' is allegedly an anime television series based off a light novel of the same name, but personally, I take issue with this dubious origin story. In 1969, Adam Levine published a notoriously controversial text — one that, without doubt, had a substantial impact on perceptions of religion, morality, media censorship, and even on the very substrata of modern culture. There are many factors attributed to our divergence from faith, but none can as succinctly elucidate this drift as a question I asked myself as a child — and one that many people have pondered upon: "Why?" Why? Why am I being told this? Forwhat purpose, and with what explanation? Clearly, the author of this series had similar thoughts. Only a blind man could create something so profoundly devoid of light. On that note, here's a quote from the aforementioned Satanic Bible: "Can the torn and bloody victim 'love' the blood-splashed jaws that rend him limb from limb?" Allow me to correct for context. "Can the unfortunate viewer of this show 'love' the cursed world in which they were born, just to suffer through it?" No, they can't. I can't. I have no more faith left — not in God, not in myself, not in the world. ... 'The Fruit of Evolution' reaches a degree of flagrant incompetence that I didn't think possible. To refer to it as 'bad' is insulting to anything I've ever called, well, merely bad. It's incomprehensibly terrible. It stoops so far below the realm of mediocrity that it's absurd. There's not a singular positive quality: the animation is dull, ugly, inconsistent, and stiff; the characters are fools with no actual 'character' whatsoever aside from the most mind-numbingly tropey bullshit; the humor is lame, immature, and in utterly poor taste; there is no depth to the story, nor any semblance of interesting or detailed writing or theming anywhere to be seen. I swear on all that is holy, one of the most important scenes in the entire series is literally only possible because the authors forgot how to do basic multiplication. That's how little effort it was made with. Not only that, you know what the annoying, bland, unfunny, uncool, pathetic excuse for a protagonist says in spite of this? "It's basic math!" You're a basic bitch. You also made out with a gorilla. Freak. 1/10
This review will contain minor spoilers - however this isnt a particularly plot driven anime so it really doesnt matter. Fruit of evolution appears like it attempted to be a generic and average isekai, the type you usually see at least 2 of each season, and yet somehow it failed to copy and paste the same standard formula that all the other clique isekai have adopted. Now full disclosure, I personally enjoy trashy isekai. I know I will go and see a doctor eventually. However, even my underserved love for the standard isekai traits could not make me actually like this anime. In this review I willexplain why. Firstly there is no plot, this isnt particularly surprising for a trashy isekai but it would've been nice to see one nonetheless. Instead the protagonist just seems to wander around almost randomly building his harem and abilities as he goes. Those two aspects in particular will be the focus of my criticism as they are the key aspects of most trashy isekai. The harem itself is unique to say the least. This anime, for reasons I cannot begin to fathom, put an unexpected twist on his harem. He marries a gorilla. Yes she turns into a beautiful woman later on, but he fell in love with her before she did so. He also gets a Donkey that turns into a girl but that wasn't even surprising at that point. As well as this, there's none of the satisfaction of him getting a harem. The girls just immediately fall head over heels in love with him the moment he sees them. For example, the only human girl officially part of his harem (in the anime at least) is meant to be a loner who purposely keeps away from people and yet seems to fall in love with him about 5 minutes after meeting with no actual actions from the MC himself. Its not worth writing too much about how OP the main character is. As per isekai rules he becomes outrageously overpowered almost instantly and without any effort, yet infuriatingly he keeps complaining about his new powers despite there being literally zero negative consequences. Obviously, he never uses any of them effectively but still manages to slay the most powerful monster in existence, so there's no need to worry if he's the strongest or not. Moving on from the plot, the studio itself didnt do the anime any favours. The animation quality is terrible, something which doesnt work well when trying to animate cool fights with magic flying around, and the music/ost was forgettable at best. That said, if the animation and music was incredibly high quality then it would only feel out of place considering how low effort the actual story was, but that doesn't justify the end result. Moving on from classic isekai traits, I will mention the other main focus of this anime, comedy. Comedy is meant to be subjective so I wont go on an egotistical rant about how my taste in comedy is superior to anyone who likes this anime, however I personally found it was very hit or miss, miss being the most common result. I will begrudgingly admit, though, that I chuckled at a couple of jokes but the overall quality of the comedy was about as good as everything else. So... since ive been insulting it so much, why have I given it a 4 and not a 1? Firstly, as previously mentioned I have an irrational love for trashy isekai and although I hated almost everything about this anime, it was still an easy way to turn off my mind for 20mins. I never found myself actively dreading each Monday when I would watch it like I have for some anime. (*cough* See my review on Seven deadly sins dragon's judgement *cough*) Furthermore, the anime knows that it is low effort and this works in its favour. Some anime attempt to be a high quality and well done masterpiece and it only makes it fall harder when it ultimately fails to reach that standard. Fruit of evolution simply doesnt try and doesnt raise your expectations as a result. You know you're going to watch something trash and you get what you expected. Overall, do I recommend you watch this anime? Of course not, this show sucks. There is literally no reason to watch this, there are better things out there that exceeded this anime in all qualities. However, I was able to make it through all 12 episodes without any major negative symptoms so if you read this and still really want to watch it, im not going to try to stop you. Thanks for reading my review!
The first part of this review is just going to be an explanation as to why I gave this show the score I did. The second part is gonna be a rant as to why it's a bad show and what should change (A lot of spoilers). Last part is gonna be a summary for those who want to skim through this. Story 6/10 Don't you just love a cliche run of the mil Isekai show where the main is op and has a harem, cause I do. I love Isekai whether it be a masterpiece like Overlord or a dumpster fire like The Master of Ragnarok,I think that they all are special. This show has some of the most cliche writing ever. Man is sent to another world, gets harem and has to defeat random enemy (Most of the time demon lord). But just like every other Isekai there is a twist. So, what is this twist you might ask? That is a very good question and despite me watching every episode I can come down to one. It's a cringy comedy that tries to be serious sometimes. Imagine if Konosuba had a genuine serious moment that was supposed to make you feel something, now imagine it having random characters that are boring (with a few exceptions). That is a summary of the story. Art 3/10 OH MY GOD DONT GET ME STARTED ON THE ART. Remember when I said that it was a cringy show trying to be a serious show, well the art helps my case. It looks so bad, not ex-arm bad but you get the idea, a lot of the "serious" moments could have been a lot better if the animation could get me to take it seriously. It's like if a 6 year old came up to me with a picture of a frowny face and expected me to cry. Sound 4/10 I don't pay much attention to sound but what I do pay attention to is the openings and endings. (You can just skip them, so you can skip this part). Opening was one of the worst ones I have ever seen in my life. No key information about the story just a bunch of flashes of the main heroine and the other main heroine, then at the very end of the opening two random fight scenes against people introduced at the end of the show. The ending is something I really don't care about much because it really isn't something that creators care about. It was still bad but I guess I care less about it. Characters ): 4/10 (Slight spoilers) Isekais always know how to legally plagiarize when it comes to characters. I mean the main character isn't even that interesting. Main heroine is, how do I put this, a literal monkey. So this man fell in love with a monkey. Second main heroine a.k.a Altria a.k.a pointless isn't even really needed in the story. They could've saved three or four episodes if they didn't have her which could've made the story a lot more interesting considering the ending, but more on the later. We also have a donkey, a warrior/valkyrie, and a catgirl assassin. The most interesting characters were probably the catgirl and the valkyrie since they actually have something that relates to politics. The stupidest character has to be Altria. We spent three or four episodes on her just for her to become a girl in the MC's harem. They could've spent those episodes trying to focus on the main problem at hand, or even using it to do some world building. Not saying she's the only pointless one, every single character is pointless, even the MC, (except the classmates I guess) I'm just saying that I found some of them interesting. The characters only contribute to the shows cringy comedy aspect instead of focusing on something that we might find interesting. Then we have the side characters which are a very sad excuse of comedy. You can tell that the creator thought that the side characters were funny and unique. In the end though they were very special, mentally that is. Enjoyment 7/10 At the end of the day nothing else matters except for our enjoyment. Despite it being a cringy show with all its flaws, I still enjoyed it. I could have been so much better but in the end, we got what we got and there is no changing it. I do not recommend this show unless you are a higher form of being, such as myself, who can fully grasp the complexity and intelligence put into the art form that is known as Isekai. Honestly though, if I watched this show without the weekly break, I probably wouldn't be able to finish it. THE RANT (Heavy spoilers, but you're not gonna watch anyway) Alright now that were done with all the vegetables, we can finally get down to the meat and potatoes. So first off, what was that introduction. God comes over the intercom saying I'm gonna transfer you to another world so pair up. MC is getting bullied randomly as this is happening. Keep in mind this is only the first 2 minutes of the show, so I feel no empathy or sympathy for this man. It would have been so much cooler if they showed his daily life and show why he was getting bullied (besides being fat). Second what's the deal with him falling in love with a monkey who then becomes a women. Would have been a better choice to introduce her as an adventurer who saves him from the monkeys. You might be thinking, "What about the random sheep that's there for 5 minutes and never shows up again," and to that I say, what sheep. Third, GET RID OF ALTRIA she is so pointless. We literally spend a whole episode with her running around trying to figure out she's in love. WHYYYY though. That precious time could be spent on something like world building or information gathering. Last key problem, WHY DID YOU WAIT TILL THE VERY END TO ADRESS THE PROBLEM. It took twelve episodes for this man to finally go see his friends and hopefully save them. Oh wait, no it didn't cause the interaction didn't happen yet. At the very end of the story when he can finally meet his classmates and we can have an explanation as to what may be going on, the show ends. This show will probably never get a second season cause of how stupid this show is. Summarize this all up don't watch the show, or do, I really don't care but just keep in mind that this is another Isekai. Average story, bad art, bad sound, annoying characters. Still, I enjoyed it, so I gave it a six. Still kinda hoping for a second season (Spoiler) cause I love seeing Isekais with a school in them. (This is my first review, sorry if it's bad)
This isekai anime changed my life Before watching this anime, I was a filthy dwarf. After watching this anime, I turned into a 7 feet tall chad isekai fan and my door is flooded with hot anime girls 24/7 Story: 10/10 The story is spectacular with no plot holes and perfect writing, I have never seen such a satisfying story before (other than Isekai Smartphone) Art: 10/10 The art of this anime is better than the art of animes produced by KyoAni and Studio Ghibli, and I can never look at other animes the same way as before. Sound: 10/10 The incredible sound recordings of this anime made my ears feel ecstaticeven with my crappy 10$ headphones. Character: 10/10 The character development of this anime is the best I have seen. The main character, Seichi, had more character development than characters of all animes I have watched combined together. Overall: 10/10 I enjoyed this anime very much and I cannot wait for the Season 2 of this!
I never write reviews because i think that my opinion is already represented good enough in other peoples reviews and because my english is not good enough to fully cover all my thoughts. But this time it is different. This time it feels like a heavy burden lays on my shoulders and i need to guide others around this massive mistake that consumes important lifetime which you could have spend on sharpening pencils or peeling cherries. I LOOOOVEE Trash-Overpowerd-MC-Fantasy-Harem-Isekais but this one right here made me suffer serious brain damage. I will make it short so you can start with every other activity on this planetbesides watching this show. Trash Story Trash "worse-than-hentai" Art lazy sounddesign trash boring minus one-dimensional characters But why 3 not 1?? 1 point for pretty waifus 1 point for the few good jokes and 1 point for kissing gorillas (amazing 11/10) Thanks bye
The worst thing about anime is that the animation is medium regular and so is the soundtrack. But everything else seems perfect to me, it is in the same season as Mushoku Tensei and I also feel that I stand out. As a unique isekai it has many unique characteristics, for example how they justify that this op seems very good to me after the development of characters and how they deal with each other it seems very cute. I highly recommend it if you like elos iseakis. The animation is very well achieved, the fights are kept trying to be as interesting as possible butwhen you have a protagonist op it gets complicated because every time he fights seriously, the fight is over. The SOUNDTRACK IS pretty good and the harem that the main character has is very diverse with many animals so if you like dogs and cats you will like the girls that appear.
Alright, I see all these people calling this show garbage, and I can't really blame them, but for personal preference I disagree, for one main reason. I enjoyed it well enough. This season is kind of disappointing since it's just a collection of the main bulk of hopeless romantic or silly harem members for the show. I spent the whole season waiting for him to meet back up with his classmates to show them what for. You see, in these shows, what really matters are reactions. Isekais are mostly self insert focused shows where the main character isn't too difficult to get inside the head of forthe audience, that way it's for easy for the audience to feel like they're the hero of fantasy world with cool powers. Because of that, people love seeing reactions, they want to see people get surprised at the power of the main character, and praise them, and continue to be surprised and impressed at the main character, because that's what feels good for the audience. However, in this show, there's barely anything shown, the only person that has really seen the main character's true strength is the level 700 gorilla wife, who fell in love with him for his strength and is never surprised by it after the first couple episodes. Arifureta is a show I enjoy a lot really (excited for the next season too), it has a very similar situation, though vastly different main characters, but the premise is the same. There's a character bullied by his class, who then gets OP in the new world after being separated from his class. Both this show and Arifureta benefit greatly from the tension created by the story leading itself towards a reunion between the class that bullied the now handsome and overpowered main character, and that same main character. Keeping the tension from being cut before a second season is released is probably the only way this show would survive for more than one season, and they didn't cut the tension, which is good for the show. I hope the second season comes out without a hitch, because I do want to re experience that tension from Arifureta, but otherwise, it's a pretty bang on average Isekai Harem, if you've got time then you can watch it I suppose.
I don´t understand why it is so underrated. The series just tries to make fun of its own genre and it is just funny. It´s not suposed to be anything else. For anyone who didn´t watch it, if you like konosuba this is probably good for you. There is no depth and the anime doesn´t take anything seriously. But it is fun to watch and for me that is more than enough. I watched a shitload of anime this year and this really one of the best anime that came out 2021. If you want to watch something serious this will not be anything you like.
'The Fruit of Evolution' is surprisingly enjoyable: it's light-hearted fun in a fantasy world that knows when to use an anime trope and when to subvert it. You'll laugh at the joke, and you'll laugh that they even made the joke. I think it has a lot of heart, and it might surprise you more than once with a serious moment. But the show doesn't really find its footing until episode two, so you have to give it a chance; you can probably give up if you're not having a good time by the end of episode six (which is delightful). The competent storytelling may comeas a relief to fans of fantasy and romantic comedy. The characters behave consistently. The jokes land. The serious moments don't contradict the levity. There's no time-wasting tournament arc. The story keeps moving forward at an appropriate pace without feeling like it's checking off boxes. You can generally count on 'The Fruit of Evolution' to do the obvious right thing. The first episode is the weakest: the comedy isn't supported by character development yet, so it feels a bit too silly. Also, instead of telling the story in order, it starts in the middle of the action, then switches to a lengthy flashback: you see this a lot in anime, I never like it, and I think it was an especially bad choice here. Still, I'm glad I stuck with it. The animation is serviceable, but I don't really care about that: I just want to see fun, well defined characters interact in entertaining ways, and I'm willing to overlook a lot of technical details. The voice acting is pretty good, the music is fine, and the English subtitles have to be taken with a grain of salt, all of which is normal. The overarching plot is mysterious by design; sometimes it's well integrated into the episode, and sometimes we just cut to the villains being villainous for some reason. Either way, it was enough to get me invested, and I'm looking forward to watching the whole season, however ridiculous it gets. I'm happy to rate 'The Fruit of Evolution' generously.
I'm going to be honest: I truly, unironically really enjoyed this anime. I really don't think it deserves all the hate, and as far as I'm concerned, so long as you know what you're getting into, you can really enjoy this anime. I'm going to be upfront first, though: This anime is exceedingly standard for the isekai genre. It honestly doesn't pull many punches in terms of originality at all (though the bi? gorilla girl is a great touch). But that's okay. This was an anime I watched to relax- it's mindless, and not super deep. It's also not super fanservice-y, which is appreciated. MC isclueless, as usual, but not exceedingly so. He has brain enough to figure out obvious solutions within the episode. And as far as harems are concerned, this is one of my favorite relationships. Personally, I'm tired of every girl in a harem fighting each other constantly, and seeing that not happen, with them rolling with the punches as they come, is honestly really refreshing, at least in my opinion. On that note, I will say I wish they'd focused more on the story than the harem building, but this has ended in a way that is super open to a part 2 or season 2, and I think there's a fair amount of potential where the story is going. I also rather like the way Seiichi's overpoweredness is presented as a sort of gradual increase (that he doesn't much care for) as opposed to how it is shown in How Not To Summon A Demon Lord, for example. I could go on, but I'll boil it down to this: If you're looking for something quick, enjoyable, and funny in a mindless sort of way, then Shiranai Uchi ni Kachigumi Jinsei is for you. If you're looking for a fresher take on the isekai genre, then you should probably look elsewhere.
Recommendation: On an objective level, there is almost nothing positive to say about this series, and it is easily one of the worst shows I have ever seen. And yet it was so bad that I actually perversely enjoyed it. If you enjoy watching bad shows ironically, this is a fun one, but otherwise steer clear. Story: Our protagonist Seiichi is a fat loser with no friends when his entire high school class is transported to a fantasy world. The god that transported them takes pity on friendless and bullied Seiichi, giving him the ability to eat Fruits of Evolution, which more or lessevolve him beyond being human and make him on par with a god almost instantly. This is a pure power fantasy through and through, and is not to be taken seriously in any way. The show itself knows this, often lampshading its own ridiculous isekai cliches and showing some level of self awareness, but that doesn't actually make the story very interesting. The rest of Seiichi's class is shipped off to Barbador Magic Academy to train as heroes, and it seems clear that something is going to happen with them if this ever gets a second season, but just going off of what we get in the first season, it's a completely pointless dead end of a subplot, as Seiichi still has yet to see or interact with them in any way by the end of the season, even though there are usually a few scenes about them in each episode. In general, the rest is highly predictable, with a new girl showing up in most episodes, having a personal crisis solved by Seiichi's ridiculous power level, and joining his harem. The harem, by the way, is mostly animals that have also eaten Fruits of Evolution and become human, but they also transform back and forth, so you get treated to the occasional sight of Seiichi kissing a big pink gorilla on the lips, for example. It's certainly unique and ridiculous and the spectacle almost makes it worth putting up with this complete nothingburger of a story. Audio: Have you ever wished for a show where Zenitsu from Kimetsu no Yaiba would do his whole obnoxious screaming routine for 25 minutes straight every week? Because that's pretty much what you have here. There are a lot of things that make this show bad, but this is the thing that makes it close to unwatchable. Visual: Cheap and lazy animation to an almost shocking extent. This show looks like its budget was whatever change the studio found in the couch cushions. Animation is stiff and unnatural-looking, action scenes are almost all slideshows, and there are cut corners everywhere, sometimes to the point of hilarity. I specifically remember one scene where they put a reaction pop up bubble over the head of a character who was already on screen just so they didn't have to animate him turning his head toward the camera so you could see his expressions. The only positive thing you can really say here is that at least they didn't go full CGI for the series, because that's about the only way it could have looked worse. Characters: What characters? At most, you have a few one-note gag characters like Guscle, the muscular bodybuilder of a guild leader that only ever wears thongs. Seiichi is a blank slate isekai protagonist, and apart from a bit of minor character development around Artoria and her inability to get close to anyone because of her bad luck, all of the harem members are 100% devoid of any personality beyond "really likes Seiichi". In conclusion, this show just sucks. It literally doesn't do anything right or have any redeeming qualities, and I certainly can't recommend it in good faith. But if you're someone like me that gets a kind of sick enjoyment from watching something terrible just so you can experience how completely idiotic it is firsthand and make fun of it, then this is one of the best of that specific type of show out there.
I won't lie, this anime is pretty trashy. It's a typical ecchi harem isekai, but man, it made me laugh a lot. It's bad but in a good way. A lot of the developments are so dumb that they make my brain hurt. The show is very self aware and knows that it's trash but makes the most out of it; pretty much just about every moment of the show is excellent meme material. Overall it wouldn't win any awards but as long as you keep an open mind and don't take it too seriously (or actually, don't take it seriously at all), it's anice enjoyable little guilty pleasure comedy that isn't a complete waste of time unlike a lot of other trashy isekai.
If you treat this as a light hearted parody of the isekai genre it's honestly bloody fantastic. It's not a serious show, it doesn't try to be one. It's a bit of light fluff that is making fun of itself and the genre it's in. To the point where the MC is complaining that he doesn't want to be more OP! The show will of course have it's haters who were looking for a serious self-insert protag. But this isn't the sort of show they were looking for. The art is almost deliberately cheesy at times, reminds me a bit ofwhoever animated Toriko, (It's not that I don't think, but I can see some stylistic influences here and there.) Honestly If you liked the "Airplane/Flying High" type stuff from the 80s, and like anime, and are aware of all the isekai tropes, you may enjoy this. If you're looking for dark gritty self-insert crap, this is not your bag. It's not laugh out loud funny, but it gets a fair few snickers and chuckles.
I was surprised when I saw so many negative reviews of this anime. It's an anime that I th oroughly enjoyed. It's honestly one of the best Isekai in recent years, although I suppose that's not saying much considering the embarrassingly low bar for the genre. This year in particular was great for Isekai, there was this, World's Finest Assassin Reincarnated as an Aristocrat, Mushoku Tensei: Jobeless Reincarnation, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 2, and The Faraway Paladin. And out of all four of them, I do think it's the worst, but it's still a goodshow, and worthy of your consideration. Of course it's not flawless, because no anime is, and I will highlight the problems that I found, but they come nowhere close to outweighing the positives. First of all, I love the protagonist, Seiichi. On the surface he seems like the generic Isekai protagonist, but there are several things that sets him apart. While he seems naive, he's not stupid, and makes many intelligent and rational decisions in the series. He's kind hearted and wants to protect the weak, but he understands his own limitations and doesn't go head first into danger without aid. This is especially seen when he saved the assassin girl from being bondage tortured for information by one of the Valkyries. He didn't go to save her himself, he enlisted the head of the Valkyries, Louise. That actually brings up one of my issues, in that it didn't make much sense that she helped him. Louise seemingly knew what the torturer was all about, that she was going to, indeed, brutally starve and whip this young girl, but she let her go through with it without a word of complaint. But then, she helped Seiichi save her. Not only that, but Seiichi, despite being told point blank that she was a bondage master, didn't voice any complaints either. Don't get me wrong, i"m glad that they saved her, and the woman was punished for going that far, but it was still kind of strange. I also like that Seiichi entered into an official polyamorous arrangement with both Saria and Altria. Polyamory isn't my thing, I wouldn't want one of those myself, but I do think that Polyamory should be represented and normalized more in anime. Maybe not official marriage in modern settings, at least not yet, as you can't legally marriage multiple people in modern days in any major country, but at least in spirit, like devoting yourself to multiple people. It hink that's very interesting. However, the few we're getting now seem to just be in fantasy anime, which is acceptable as well. Mushoku Tensei is gonna have that in the future, and this series has that as well. I think this pushes the relationship a little ways beyond the standard fanservice-centered harem, and into something more official and emotional. Both Saria and Altria love Seiichi with all their hearts, and Seiichi loved them both equally, so it was the only arrangement that made sense, and it was handled very tastefully. That doesn't mean that there isn't a harem in the series. Louise, the head of the valkyries, is part of his harem, as is the young assassin girl that he saved, because there always has to be a damn loli, doesn't there? But I still think there's more to this than just a standard harem, even if elements of that are still present in the series. However, the absolute best element in the series has to be the humor. I like that a lot of recent Isekai try and play up the humor aspect more than anything else. It probably started with Konosuba, and while I don't think any of the others are nearly as amazing as that one, it's still refreshing. Considering how unbelievably oversaturated that Isekai is in 2021, it's nice to see Isekai anime that dont' take themselves incredibly seriously and just want to entertain you, to make you laugh. Hell, episode 1 builds a romantic relationship between a human, (Seiichi), and a Gorilla, (Saria), and ends with a kiss between the two. I laughed my ass off due to how seriously the music, voice acting, and animation was trying to take it in spite of how ridiculous it was in reality, and i'm almost certain that this was the intended reaction. After that, Saria transforms into a human form, and at first, I thought the series was gonna go down hill. And while nothing was as funny to me as that moment, it still kept me entertained throughout the duration of it. While I would have preferred if Saria remained a Gorilla all the time, she is able to transform back into a Gorilla whenever she wants to, which makes it a little bit better, and even when she's not a Gorilla, she's still extremely funny and endearing. That's not all, either. There's the bar which is led by Ellis Mcrene, the BDSM Queen, (who was also the trainer of the one who was gonna torture the assassin girl), and is filled with tons of masochists that love being whiped and abused by her. I think Darkness from Konosuba would fit in perfectly well there. It's always a good time when they're on screen. Also, the old man introduced in the final few episodes, who clearly has fetishes of his own that he's kept hidden, (or maybe not, because some of the other characters don't seem too surprised, they just never bring it up). Another problem I had with the series was the final battle, which was way too short and underwhelming compared to what I was expecting. But even that isn't enough to damper my enjoyment for this series, and also, albeit to a lesser extent, my investment in the plot and characters and where it's going to go. There are a lot of unanswered questions at the end of the anime. Seiichi has yet to reunite with his bullies, or those other kids that were Isekai'd with him. I hesitate to call them his friends, because we don't know how close they were exactly, but at the very least they were the ones that didn't bully him, and in fact defended him against the actual bullies before. Also, at the VERY end of the episode, a brand new character was suddenly introduced. Saria teases the possibility of a second season, then it ends. She was really vague about it. I really hope that wasn't her giving us false hope, and that there's a second season on the horizon, because so far the light novels haven't been licensed either. And yes, I will consider that cliffhanger to be a flaw of the series, until we get another season, or the light novels get licensed. Despite my issues, however, I still think this is a good show that deserves another look. If you were made skeptical by all of the negative reviews, know that it definitely gets my endorsement, as an anime that's not amazing, but is still enjoyable and worth a shot. SCORES! TLDR at bottom of review. The big problem with this show, is it moves too fast when it comes to everything. I feel every episode needed 3 episodes to actually explain everything. Everything story wise, and character development wise is just a little rushed. This show is obviously not an in depth anime at this moment. The story is... Well they have a target audience, and they are trying to hit them hard with an easy "life". I have not read anything but this is pretty much a prequel arc as far as I can tell on to the main story, just to get all the charactersinto a position where you know them. The art is good, they did a great job on all of it. The character designs are all great, the location art is great, the only place they kind of dumbed things down is the monster/enemy art but that is ok most of them only last 3 seconds anyways. No problems with sound, but nothing particularly stands out. I liked the voice actors, nothing was out of place. There are even a few Easter eggs on the soundboard. Characters. Ima be honest with ya- We got about three seasons worth of character growth and learning to put into 12 episodes. In other words, it needed more to show characters grow. As for all the main female leads falling in love with the mc withing seconds(hyperbole) Yeah it feels fast, but that is some what mitigated when you see they put in a "Charm" stat which is for full comedic effect beyond reasonable. Enjoyment. Aside from the times where I thought, It would be nice if we had a few episodes for this character to be introduced, or for this plot line to play out, and a few moments of other stuff going too fast, it was pretty funny and enjoyable. TLDR I think what people are missing about this show is that it is an over the top parody, where the characters take their goals seriously. This show is not taking itself seriously but MC is. Everybody is a parody. Everything over the top is done on purpose. Everything Generic is done on purpose. Once I realized that, the show was really funny.
(tl;dr at the bottom) I want to give this show some justice because I feel it is probably a lot better than what a lot of people would initially think. I knew nothing about this show when I started to watch it. When I saw the cover art the only thing I could think was "This show looks really stupid, let's watch it." and honestly it kinda was, in a good way. I'm not here to white knight this show because it has flaws and its not going to be for everyone but I would like to leave a more balanced and fair review than what I'vebeen seeing as of late. Very light/insignificant spoilers inside. The first thing I want to say is that you can't really compare this show to other isekais because it has it's own little thing going on. And second, I'm not a huge fan of isekais in general. They need to be pretty well made. Keep in mind I almost dropped this show after episode 2 and I don't regret sticking with it. For starters, if you take this show seriously, YOU. ARE. DOING. IT. WRONG. I feel like this show is kind of a gem, in my opinion even though there's very little story and basically no character development. This show is more of a comedy series than anything else and it shows in how the episodes are written. The show is a lighthearted fun time. I would almost put the humor close to the same level as Gintama, a little lower brow. Its lighthearted and easy to watch, perfect show for a bad mood pick me up. The characters are kind of adorkable but can be a touch annoying at times. I really enjoyed how the show just instantly gets the typical isekai tropes out of the way so you can just enjoy the show for what it is: pointless, fun entertainment. There's a light 'story' going on through the episodes but nothing really seems to come of it. Now, here's what I didn't like because even if I to like a show, I will be more than happy to point out the many flaws it has. First problem, as mentioned earlier, the story is almost non-existent. It teases a few times like something really exciting is going to happen and then you're back to the pointless comedy and it can get frustrating. The story has potential but it just wasn't paced well enough to get you hooked in a meager 12 episodes. Speaking of 12 episodes, I feel like this show would have been immensely better if there were more episodes to give more time to really get the story rolling. There is literally no character development that I could tell and if there was, I didn't notice it. Oh, and the ending really made my blood boil because I know it could have been WAY more satisfying. Even with all of that, I would still happily recommend it. There's a few more things that I liked and disliked about the show but for the sake of not writing a book I'll wrap up here. It really boils down to how serious you take this show. If you watch it with an open mind and don't mind a few (a lot) of funny but super cringey moments then I genuinely think you'll enjoy this show. Just make sure not to put it on too high a pedestal and for the love of what ever you believe in don't compare it to other shows. All that does is take the fun out of it and just skews your opinion of the show in an unfair and easily preventable way. Just have fun with it. -tl;dr- The show is more of comedy. Don't take this show seriously, just have fun with it. Story is heavily lacking and character development is almost non-existent. Something you watch for lighthearted fun, not engaging story and amazing action scenes. Basically makes fun of all other isekais without making it overly obvious. Also has some really good social learning points.
