As I contemplate this strange little series, a question pops into my mind. Why would a woman watch a series such as this, a series which is practically built around the idea of the panty flash? And on top of that, why might a woman actually enjoy it? I often find the gratuitous panty flashes that plague many anime series to be annoying, and the thoroughly unrealistic portrayals of women found in anime series can bother me as well. However, when these anime traits are taken to extremes and/or used as parody, then I become interested. It is as ifthe anime genre is poking fun at itself. "Colorful," in part, is a parody of anime fan service, and it makes fun of stereotypical male fantasies and male behavior. I like "Colorful" for the same reason that I like the British comedian Benny Hill's classic TV programs. A seemingly normal and innocuous man encounters an attractive woman and catches a tantalizing glimpse of her nether regions. He suddenly turns into a blithering idiot, a sex-crazed fool who is driven completely out of his mind by a glimpse of a woman's underwear. The expressions on the men's faces in "Colorful" are hilarious, and the sudden transitions from normal to nuts upon viewing the infamous undergarment are also funny. The artwork and animation quality are good but not great, appropriate to the setting and story line, but no more than that. This series doesn't have a strong story as such, but a strong, consistent story is not necessary; the randomness is actually entertaining. Character development also isn't a major feature of this series, but again, strong characters aren't really necessary. Since the show is interested in stereotypes, stereotypical characters are appropriate. For a compact piece of weirdness that pokes fun at stereotypes, Japanese culture, and anime conventions, I find this series successful, and it is enjoyable to watch. At least in this series, all the panty flashes are appropriate to the story and the concept. If Japanese men truly are as crazy as they appear to be in "Colorful," I'll have to make sure I don't give them the opportunity to look up my skirt if I ever travel to Japan. Japan's problems with groping, voyeurism, and other forms of sexual harassment occasionally make the news around the world, and the situation is disturbing. Perhaps "Colorful" and other parody series like it are useful in exposing and counteracting this problem. Maybe men can watch this series and see the humor in their own situation; the show makes fun of men, but in a lighthearted manner. However, do men really want to be just like the jokers portrayed in this series? I should think not.
Overview: Greetings my friends and happy 2015 to everybody! What better way to celebrate the new year then by looking at the absolute worst anime of the past!? This not only provides laughter and merriment, but allows us to see just how far our beloved medium of animation has come. Today we look at Colorful, an anime that celebrates voyeurism and isn't particularly funny. Technically, it claims to be a high concept satire of the perversion of Mankind and was directed by the Avant Garde director of Serial Experiments Lain. Unfortunately, this was a HORRIBLE execution of satire and no one seemed to "get it" besidesthe director himself. Especially not the people who did the US dub! Plot: 0/10 Plot?! We don't need no stinking plot! All we need are 3 minute scenes that look up cartoon girls' skirts and dub in lines like "check out dat ass mang!" Then we will go to live action for 5 minutes and show a middle aged Japanese woman in her underwear! That will be a quality production! Music: 1/10 What would a terrible series be without a fucking GOD AWFUL opening theme? Why the fuck not? Pity factor: 10/10 I feel sorry for the middle aged woman in the cutaway gags! She is probably a grandmother now and I hope to God her grandchildren never have to find out that dear grandma starred in this piece of shit anime! Ending Quote: "Showing clips of this movie to people makes me feel like a doctor informing someone that they are about to die! I'm not angry that this movie was made, because we've all made shitty movies. I'm angry that this fucking movie....WAS...RELEASED! Someone actually looked at this wretched piece of shit and said, "yeah, I think this is acceptable to release to a wide audience!" - The Cinema Snob on the film "Black Devil Doll from Hell"
If you like ecchi humor, Colorful! is for you. Although this series is very funny at the beginning, the events that take place seem a bit repetitive after a while. After all, it does contain frisky guys that seem desperate for that one upskirt peek or that one wardrobe malfunction. The art is okay. If you want something totally psychedelic, go for the intermission pieces. Sound...well, I don't remember anyone really talking? I watched the English and, sure, there was conversation but there wasn't really any developing dialogue that occurred. This goes for the characters as well: they were there but they don't develop like inany other anime. This certainly ISN'T a Fooly Cooly type anime where you get the full dialogue, recognizable characters and have that urge to watch it again. It might be out of nostalgia that you might want to revisit this anime again but otherwise, for watchers like me, it was a temporary watch.
"Colorful" is basically an anime comedy sketch show. Some of the clips are running jokes featuring recurring characters, but most are independent from one another. One thing all the clips have in common is that they're all ecchi in nature, primarily backed up by the same idea - they're all about lecherous men thinking up new and "innovative" (I'm putting the word in quotes cos it seems kinda wrong to use it in this fashion) ways of peeking up girls' skirt. Considering the "inspiration" (again... just doesn't seem right to use a term with positive meaning here) behind this show, it would need to dosomething pretty damn special to end up as anything other than awful. It probably comes as no surprise that it doesn't manage to do it. A lot of the jokes are very repetitive, with almost exactly the same idea often being applied over and over again to different clips featuring different characters. Admittedly, some of the jokes were actually quite cleverly executed and had me chuckling in mild amusement... but those are in the minority. Most of the material were just dull, and seeing them recycled didn't make them any funnier. The ending was completely random... I've no idea what they were trying to do there, but it totally sucked. I'll say this for "Colorful" though: I haven't seen the sketch show format being used in anime before, so I guess it's kind of original in concept. And that's about all the positives I can think up. I guess you could try it out if you're desperate to watch something mildly amusing to burn time. Since each clip is only a few of minutes long, watching this isn't too painful. In fact it's a bit like reading a couple of paragraphs from a tabloid newspaper while you wait for your takeaway - short, crap, but funny... funny in a so-bad-it's-funny kind of way.
Bad shows don't always stem from a lack of talent. Even the exceptionally talented of directors or artists have created a work which is far bellow their abilities at one time or another. Take director Ryuutarou Nakamura, for example. At his best, his works are powerful, thought-provoking experiences which warrant multiple re-watches. Yet he's had his fair share of busts, as well. One of these came a year after his magnum opus, the mind-bending Serial Experiments Lain, in the form of a screwball social satire. This is Colorful, Ryuutarou Nakamura's satirical take on the over-sexualized voyeurism of modern society and mass media, which can besummed up with the words lowbrow gutter comedy. Speaking personally for a moment, I can also describe it as a guilty pleasure. Given Nakamura's inclination of working on intellectually challenging and thoughtful projects, it is strange that Colorful is so lowbrow in just about every aspect. Conceptually, a satire of overblown sexual content in media sounds pretty juicy. However, in practice all the jokes end up being lewd and crude, rather than being witty and insightful as satires usually are. No doubt this is due to the subject matter of male fixation on the female anatomy. To put it lightly, the male gaze is prevalent in this show; it's naked women galore, with plenty of focus on butts and boobies. Much of the comedy centers around men getting distracted, or acting stupid and perverted, after catching a glimpse of some girl's cleavage. Amusing certainly, but it's hardly sophisticated satire. The humor also ends up being rather limited. There is only so many ways to depict male lack of judgment being spurred on by hot women. Granted, the show does play around with its pervert humor in creative ways and can be inspired in its lunacy (a giant school girl trots through a city, and all the men are focused on her panties), but it is basically recycling the same joke over and over again. In a way, this is actually counterproductive, as the show itself indulges in the voyeurism that it is lampooning. Although the episodes are only 5-6 minutes long, it is good to take time between episodes instead of going right into the next one; the perverted idiocy of the men in this show can be taxing, especially when taken all at once. That said, the show becomes more enjoyable in small doses and the show does provide a few chuckles and maybe one or two big laughs. Still, it's almost entirely brain-dead humor and if you can't open to its self-aware dumbness, then you probably will not like the show. Colorful was clearly made cheaply. The animation is stiff, and the character designs are janky. There is (naturally) more detail put into the girls, especially their 'assets'. Even still, they're hardly the most attractive anime girls. Nakamura's direction crude and undisciplined; the complete opposite of his usual work. With its nonsensical tangents and bouts of obnoxious wackiness, Colorful is more akin to adult swim shows like Tim & Eric than other anime. That's not a compliment. It sort of feels like Nakamura was just screwing around, which would be fine if what he produced was quality work, unfortunately it isn't. In all honesty, I can't say this is a good show. It is far too dumb to be a successful satire. Its humor is hit-or-miss, as well as being repetitive. It has no characters or plot to speak of; it's just a cluster of dumb jokes that occasionally hit the mark. There is enjoyment to be found if you let yourself sink down to its level, but the fact that I used the words 'sink down' is an indicator of the show's quality. It's a small but notable hiccup in the career of a rather talented director.
I started my search skimming through the trashy animes that usually plague the pages of the MAL ecchi tag. And I ended it quite satisfied but perplexed. You see, it was to my understanding that fast-paced, over-the-top, almost YouTube Poop-esque comedy was something unique to the era of the world wide web. But here in front of me is an anime preceding the 2000s and its outlandish internet culture, that exhibits all of these characteristics. I am not so naïve as to say "Colorful is ahead of its time" but I believe it stands atop its contemporaries as what may have served as the inspirationfor modern-day "meme-culture." It's a bit jarring seeing a lenny face and hearing memey audio-stutters in an anime from the 90s, to say the least. Despite some of its fast-forward humor, the anime seems to be ground in its era- pertaining to its peeping comedy (not that similarly perverse animes aren't released today). It is understandable as to why a woman may not find panty-gazing humor as funny as I do. Though unlike other ecchi anime, Colorful doesn't seek to justify or ignore its male characters sleazy activity; but to draw attention to it, satirize, and poke fun at the absurd lengths these men are willing to go to satisfy their voyeuristic urges. This is where much of the humor lies. Their panty-gazing exploits often result in them hurting and embarrassing themselves for the enjoyment of the audience. It wouldn't be very funny of the characters were simply to succeed in their sexual harassment. "Colorful's" art, music, and animation are equal parts amazing, its overall aesthetic stunning. The anime opens with a fucking ska song song and ends with an experimental French breakcore track. Spliced between segments of the anime are these MTV, magazine-esque montages. From beginning to end, its stylistic in a way that evokes the spirit of 90s rave and underground culture. It makes sense that an anime this unique and experimental was created by the studio responsible for animes like Boogiepop, Lain, and NieA. Definitely worth the watch and one of my personal favorites as of now.
There’s really no point in writing a full review because there’s only two criteria that decide if you’re going to enjoy this or not. The first is whether you can handle the perversion. It’s not quite as messed up as Hen Zemi but it’s pretty damn perverse. Panty shots, though prolific, are the least of your worries here – there’s one memorable scene where a guy sneaks into the bathroom after a woman is done peeing and rubs his face all over the toilet seat to feel the residual warmth. Another very short scene at the end of an episode is a short exchange betweenlovers, where the man reveals that he taught the dog how to fellate him. These are but a small selection of the sexual humor that Colorful has in store for you. The second criterion is how FREAKING WEIRD this show is. All of the “story” is in short vignette form, and is usually pretty crazy anyway – there’s one story later on in the show where a giant high school girl emerges from Tokyo Bay and starts walking around Tokyo, while perverts flock to get pictures of her easily-visible panties. Then in between the vignettes, there are bizarre, random clips that are played on repeat, with weird colors, trippy distortion, and unsettling music. It’s bizarre, to say the very least. If you do decide that this is worth your time, then I should tell you now: it’s worth it to watch the dub. The English voices are so hilariously bad and stupid, it complements the insanity of the show perfectly. I never thought I’d say this, but WATCH THIS DUBBED. In summary, this show is weird as shit and I have nothing more to say on the matter.
This is the anime you watch when you're in middle school, in 120p, in your parents' basement, with headphones on. Golden Boy may or may not be sitting in a folder on your desktop while you watch it. Colorful is a surreal hodge-podge of vignettes about voyeurism and the transitions between them. The episodes are short and the pacing is fast. It seems silly to complain about the lack of story because there isn't supposed to be one. The basic formula for the vignettes: dude sees girl, tries to see panties/cleavage/whatever, ha ha karma. In this regard it may be the most thematically consistent animeI've ever seen. Now, I am pretty sure that Colorful is supposed to be some kind of social commentary on voyeurism in Japan. A point in favor of that idea is it certainly isn't erotic. The art does not portray the ogled females in a way the average anime viewer would consider attractive. That it's dumb men being dumb: the show (plus the whole karma thing, but that happens all the time in anime anyway) may or may not convince you that there is another level to Colorful. That other level basically being: 'lol guys don't look at girls or you might get hurt.' You might be able to convince a (F)eminist to watch it based on that but I digress. Approaching this as anything but a short min-per episode gag show would be a huge mistake. It's a comedy. Is it funny though? Kinda. Upside-down Mt. Fuji is pretty much the best you're going to get. (If you ask me, that's all you need.) Not to mention Colorful has some of the best facial expressions I've ever seen. I'd bet 50% of the show is reactions and exaggerated face contortions. The scenarios within the vignettes themselves aren't half-bad either, a lot of them are pretty clever. Obviously, this is a nostalgic favorite of mine. But, I've never hated it on a re-watch. If you're looking for some time to kill you could do a lot worse. Checking out some of the recommended anime on this page Colorful pretty much blows them out of the water. For what it is, it's probably the best in its class. In terms of overall quality, for the kind of content we have here, it certainly is well above average. A well constructed show about panties and psychedelia. Plus it's got a ska OP. PS: try to find the manga. The art is better.
Oh dear… a show all about strange men trying to see women in really perverted ways. The show is really bland, not really having any story, any depth, and is made for men just to wank off. It’s as though it’s a perverts guide to finding something to get their jollies off twenty-four seven. I would put this up to par with Eiken, something that should be a hentai just to get it over with… of course the men are such losers that I can understand why no women would want them. They get off just from the simplest things like a hint of ashort skirt. I like some ecchi but only when there is a good story and when there is a reason for it, not when it’s plastered in my face. And the show is so random it’s like watching a rather un-entertaining animated version of Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Things might have been random but they were also rather repetitive and increased the bordom that I felt while watching this. The animation is really bad, looking like it was made by gonzo on a really bad day. It’s not detailed at all, even to the point of not having noses, and even doesn’t have shading for most of the show. Characters are very un-proportional, even to the point where they become like spaghetti sometimes. Sometimes they mesh really odd artwork in with it like slightly realistic or strange textures but it really just looks bad. When there is detail to the faces, it looks like troll faces online which I was never fond of. The opening song sounds like it would fit perfect for an Excel Saga episode with a girl that doesn’t seem like she can sing shouting at the top of her lungs or with a smokers cough. The men’s voices are overly creepy and the female’s sound like they were taken from hentai and porn just for kicks. In the end of this whole show, I have come to the conclusion that all men are perverts and should be cut off from the rest of the world. (Ok, no I don’t think that, but if you watched this show, I think you will understand why I said it.) Once you see one episode, you seen them all really.
Rate a 4 English Dubbed Story A mixture of different shots. Positively speaking left a surprise of what was to come. Negatively, plot could change at any precise moment. In other words sure one never got bored but how is one supposed to focus if you won't stand still. *crickets chirp( I thought it was amusing). Could have made for a rather interesting ecchi aspect. But several elements had my mind questioning the demonstration that made me miss the show. For example there was more than one ending. Why was there two? Did the creator originally shoot for one season of 8 episodes than due to popular demand broughtin another season? Or, was it a marketing trick to rack in more bucks. For a show that demonstrates collection the least they could do is keep the episodes in order. Rather than have them jumbled. Art About 20 percent of the artwork show was recycled in some matter. Also, depending on scene the art acted in a somewhat stock market fashion in terms of grade. Overall Men like women. Or at lest they like aspects of them. That fact was clearly demonstrated in this showing. If you don't mind a bumpy ride with interesting angel shots to slightly make up for chaotic plot this may be your kink.
a girl should definitely stay away from this lol. Colorful an ecchi comedy anime and yes its filled with that category of things happening in the anime it did what it meant to and not going further than the objective cant say it really was that bad for an anime itself. Will definitely recommend to anyone that likes short and fast comedy 7 out of 10. I really want to know about this anime because of the strangeness of it has or its just like to have intentional randomness where is kinda off putting its is really weird having them but oh well.
There are many reasons why a piece of media is forgotten to the sands of time. Sometimes it's because something isn't very good, sometimes it's because it was released at a time that prevented it from getting a better foothold. In Colorful's case, it's because it just wasn't very memorable. So what's the plot for this series? It doesn't have one! Based on a manga series, Colorful is a series that focuses on the misadventures of men staring, peeking, glancing, looking, and glaring at women and their efforts to get that extra eyeful of harmlessly exposed panties, bras, and occasional cleavage and the outrageous consequences oftheir actions. It's more like a sketch show with a few re-occurring characters and exactly one sketch rather than an ongoing series, which should be pretty obvious with it's tagline "Roses are red. Violets are blue. This show's about panties." Some series have a character that's a pervert for comedic relief, or even have it as the main focus, but Colorful distills the perverted comical relief down into 96 minutes, consisting of 16 short 6 minute episodes. The whole thing pretty much feels like a montage of the slapstick pervert characters from a bunch of other longer running series. By the end of the series it definitely feels a little long in the tooth, and it doesn't have the benefit of being broken up by an actual story or other events going on. It's ecchi comedy distilled into the length of a feature film. I'd complain that a series with this little substance got made, but there have been series out there with somehow even less substance. And at least Colorful doesn't pretend that it's something that it's not. If anything, I can give this series credit for at least being interesting with it's animation and art style, often being mildly creative with the way it looks. Coloful has been described as a very love it or hate it show, seemingly being described as "wildly funny" or "tasteless and depraved", and it's easy to see why. It's very unashamed of what it is, a series of vulgar panty jokes one after another with very little breathing room. I'm pretty sure there is an audience out there for something like this, but it would be an incredibly niche one at that.
Basically, this is about huge perverts having unhinged sexual fantasies and losing self-respect just to see panties. I don't really know what made them to serialize this gag comic that's all about panties. I mean I get it, this is supposed to be funny because of the "whacky" faces the perverted characters make hen they humiliate themselves just to exercise their fantasies. You could say this is just straight up underwear fetish comedy. Also, considering the time this was made, it was probably experimental, there's nothing wrong with liking this type of humor, in fact, I could say I laughed at some moments. But Ithink it was more focused on the graphic stuff rather than the comedy, that's why it's kind of boring to watch throughout, I mostly skimmed it. I guess I just have too much self-respect to give a rating about this in a "objective" manner, but I can't seem to stop myself from disliking it. It just leaves a bad taste for me and was just gross at most times.
Colorful doesn't really have a plot, or character development, or really much of anything aside from being so stuffed full of panty shots you'll think you accidentally wandered into a young woman's underwear drawer. But really, it doesn't need to have any of that. Colorful is an un-ironic, unashamed parody series that takes a look at Japan's apparent fascination with the upskirt. It's funny, but also perverted and weird, however, some people (myself included) like it for that. Just don't expect deep characterization or an overarching plotline, because the most it has is guys obsessing over the elusive panty shot, theoblivious women who fall victim to their schemes, and a bunch of running jokes. Colorful is one of those niche anime with a large gap dividing those who've witnessed its weirdness. You either like it or you hate it. Careful with this one, your mileage may vary, especially if you're not a fan of the panty shot trope that seems to run rampant throughout most anime.
